Mechanical Significance Of Morphological Variation In Diprotodont Incisors, Philip J.R. Morris, Philip G. Cox, Samuel N. Cobb

School of Geosciences Faculty and Staff Publications

All rodents possess a single pair of enlarged incisors that grow throughout life. This condition (diprotodonty) is characteristic of Rodentia, but is also found in other mammals such as lagomorphs, hyraxes, the aye-aye and common wombat. This study surveyed lower incisor morphology across extant diprotodonts to examine shape variation within and between rodents and other diprotodonts, and to determine if tooth shape varies in a manner predictable from mechanics. Six linear and area variables were recorded from microCT scans of the mandibles of 33 diprotodont mammals. The curvature of the rodent lower incisors, as measured by the proportion of a …

Transfer-Printed Gastroliths: Fowl-Ingested Artifacts And Identity At Fort Vancouver's Village, Emily C. Taber, Douglas C. Wilson, Robert Cromwell, Katie A. Wynia, Alice Knowles

Anthropology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Transfer-printed ceramics and other objects ingested by fowl provide unique data on the household production associated with a fur-trade center in the Pacific Northwest. Gastroliths are an indicator of the use of avifauna at archaeological sites, specifically those of the order Galliformes. The presence of ceramic and glass gastroliths at house sites within Fort Vancouver's village provides evidence for the keeping and consumption of domestic fowl, including chickens and turkeys. The presence and concentration of these artifacts, combined with documentary and other evidence, provide clues about household economies in a culturally diverse colonial setting. While ethnic backgrounds of the villagers …

Characterization Of Pyrethroid Resistance In The Western Corn Rootworm Diabrotica Virgifera Virgifera Leconte, Dariane Sagaseta De Oliveira Souza

Department of Entomology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The western corn rootworm (WCR), Diabrotica virgifera virgifera Le Conte (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), is a major pest of maize (Zea mays L.) in the United States and has continuously challenged our ability to develop sustainable pest management solutions. Resistance to chemical insecticides, crop rotation, and most recently transgenic plants that express toxins derived from Bacillus thuringiensis Berliner (Bt) have been well documented among WCR populations. Furthermore, US regulatory insecticide prohibitions and the lack of new active ingredients have reduced the options for WCR control. Pyrethroid insecticides are one of the few remaining chemical options. Therefore, the recent confirmation …

The epidemic, born of corruption, has a wide reach among the people of the United States, with especially firm grasps on middle-aged people, sufferers of chronic pain, white Americans and those living in the eastern portion of the country. Naloxone’s elegant design saves lives by effectively competing for a position on an opioid biding receptor in the brain to almost instantly end an overdose and restore normal breathing. …

Does My Vote Count? Analyzing The Motivations Of American Voters And The Obstacles They Face, Kalika Mahato Mar 2019

Does My Vote Count? Analyzing The Motivations Of American Voters And The Obstacles They Face, Kalika Mahato

Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)

One of the most indispensable rights Americans are promised is the opportunity to vote at the polls. After the women’s suffrage and civil rights movements, all American citizens above 18 and who haven’t committed a felony have the right to vote. The election process in America is viewed by many as egalitarian. However, upon a rudimentary examination into the election process, it becomes clear that this equality that America promotes is consistently at battle with classism and hierarchy. Every election, thousands of eligible voters do not vote because of inadequate information and support, barriers in the process, and other forms …

The Relationship Between Self-Compassion, Religion, Gender, And Objectified Body Consciousness In Christian Nazarene Women, Arielle R. A. Marston

Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)

Body shame and objectification of the female body are well known contributing factors in physical and mental health issues including high stress, eating disorder symptomatology, depression, anxiety, and low self-esteem. Religion plays a role in body shame and female objectification through both scripture and theological writings although this relationship remains inconclusive. Self-Compassion has been found to be a mitigating factor with regard to body shame in college and caregiver contexts. The Church of the Nazarene promotes itself as supporting female leadership and roles within the church. Since religion and gender roles seem to play a role in body shame and …

Conversational Agent: Developing A Model For Intelligent Agents With Transient Emotional States, Angie Dowdell Mar 2019

Conversational Agent: Developing A Model For Intelligent Agents With Transient Emotional States, Angie Dowdell

Theses and Dissertations

The demonstration of aggressive behaviors in the workplace can usually lead to negative professional consequences. However, combat-related professions may involve life and death decision making on an almost daily basis. This is one occupational area in which major duties may invoke or even require aggression. Today’s Army leaders face a different set of challenges than those faced by leaders of the past. Leaders of today must be trained to be both assertive and aggressive at the appropriate times while also displaying empathy. While this is not a new task for an Army leader, it is one that is approached differently …

Spatial or temporal aspects of neural organization are known to be important indices of how cognition is organized. However, measurements and estimations are often noisy and many of the algorithms used are probabilistic, which in combination have been argued to limit studies exploring the neural basis of specific aspects of cognition. Focusing on static and dynamic functional connectivity estimations, we propose to leverage this variability to improve statistical efficiency in relating these estimations to behavior. To achieve this goal, we use a procedure based on permutation testing that provides a way of combining the results from many individual tests that …

#Metoo, Statutory Rape Laws, And The Persistence Of Gender Stereotypes, Leslie Y. Garfield Tenzer Mar 2019

#Metoo, Statutory Rape Laws, And The Persistence Of Gender Stereotypes, Leslie Y. Garfield Tenzer

Utah Law Review

This Article illustrates how movements for increased equality between men and women can fail to meet their stated goals. Using the example of statutory rape laws, this Article explains how the legislative shift from gender-specific to gender-neutral terminology, brought on in part by feminists seeking an egalitarian society, has failed to achieve the goal of increasing equality between males and females and, in many ways, led to a return to the historical paradigm of girls as both powerless and property.

The Patent Option, Daniel Gervais Mar 2019

The Patent Option, Daniel Gervais

North Carolina Journal of Law & Technology

There is a shift in the shape of intellectual property tools used to strengthen and lengthen the right of pharmaceutical companies to exclude others from making and marketing their products. Patents have traditionally been the tool of choice. Over the past two decades, however, pharmaceutical companies have increased their degree of reliance on a right known as “data exclusivity.” This right, which now exists in most major jurisdictions, is the right to prevent third parties from relying on the clinical trial data submitted by another pharmaceutical company to obtain marketing approval for a bioequivalent or biosimilar product. The right is …

Perceptions Of Emotions By Simultaneous Bilinguals Across Various Relationship Contexts, Lisa A. Wickham

University Honors Theses

Currently, a significant amount of existing research on bilinguals does not distinguish between sequential and simultaneous bilingualism. Furthermore, there is a significant gap in the existing research on simultaneous bilinguals. This exploratory study investigated simultaneous bilinguals’ perceptions of emotional expression in their two first languages, within three relationship contexts: professional, family, romantic partners and friends. A questionnaire was administered to simultaneous bilinguals. According to the findings of this study, simultaneous bilinguals have a preference between one of their first two languages when expressing certain emotions. Additionally, participants report that relationship context impacts the language they select to use when conversing …
