Magnetic Properties Of Feni3 Nanoparticle Modified Pinus Radiata Wood Nanocomposites, Li Li Wang, Na Li, Tiqi Zhao, Bin Li, Yali Ji

Faculty Publications

Magnetic FeNi3 nanoparticles were synthesized in the internal structure of wood through an in situ fabrication approach. The morphology, crystalline phase and chemical composition of the FeNi3 modified wood was investigated by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). SEM confirmed that the magnetic nanoparticles were densely dispersed in the wood matrix. The magnetic hysteresis loops showed that the magnetism of composites is dependent on the amount of FeNi3 loading. The saturation magnetization of magnetic wood increases from 6.3 to 10.8 emu/g with an …

Rapid Daily Change In Surface Water Pco 2 And Co 2 Evasion: A Case Study In A Subtropical Eutrophic Lake In Southern Usa, Y. Jun Xu, Zhen Xu, Rongjie Yang

Faculty Publications

Evasion of carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) from lakes is a significant component in the continental carbon balance, but most current CO 2 evasion estimates ignore daily CO 2 fluctuations. To test the hypothesis that partial pressure of CO 2 (pCO 2 ) and CO 2 evasion vary throughout a day due to biological processes driven by solar radiation, we conducted in-situ pCO 2 and ambient water measurements over eleven 10-h periods in a subtropical, eutrophic shallow lake from November 2017 to May 2018. In-situ measurements were performed at 7:00, 10:00, 14:00, and 17:00 Central Standard Time of the United …

Applications Of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles To Survey Mesocarnivores, Jacob D. Bushaw, Kevin M. Ringelman, Frank C. Rohwer

Faculty Publications

With the widespread extirpation of top predators over the past two centuries, mesocarnivores play an increasingly important role in structuring terrestrial trophic webs. However, mesocarnivores are difficult to survey at a population level because their widely spaced territories and nocturnal behavior result in low detection probability. Existing field survey techniques such as track plates and motion-sensitive camera traps are time-consuming and expensive, and yet still yield data prone to systematic errors. Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) have recently emerged as a new tool for conducting population surveys on a wide variety of wildlife, eclipsing the efficiency and even accuracy of traditional …

Substantial Red Wolf Genetic Ancestry Persists In Wild Canids Of Southwestern Louisiana, Jennifer R. Adams, John J. Cox, Lisette P. Waits

Forestry and Natural Resources Faculty Publications

Concerns over red wolf (Canis rufus) extinction caused by hybridization with coyotes (C. latrans) led to the capture and removal of remnant wild wolves from southwestern Louisiana and southeastern Texas, United States, during the 1970s. Here we show that despite decades of unmitigated hybridization, and declaration of endangered red wolves as functionally extinct in the wild, red wolf mitochondrial or nuclear DNA ancestry persists in ∼55% of contemporary wild canids sampled in southwestern Louisiana. Surprisingly, one individual had 78–100% red wolf ancestry, which is within the range for 75% red wolf, red wolf backcross, or putative …

The Human Ortholog Of Archaeal Pus10 Produces Pseudouridine 54 In Select Trnas Where Its Recognition Sequence Contains A Modified Residue., Manisha Deogharia, Shaoni Mukhopadhyay, Archi Joardar, Ramesh Gupta

Articles

The nearly conserved U54 of tRNA is mostly converted to a version of ribothymidine (T) in Bacteria and eukaryotes and to a version of pseudouridine (Ψ) in Archaea. Conserved U55 is nearly always modified to Ψ55 in all organisms. Orthologs of TrmA and TruB that produce T54 and Ψ55, respectively, in Bacteria and eukaryotes are absent in Archaea. Pus10 produces both Ψ54 and Ψ55 in Archaea. Pus10 orthologs are found in nearly all sequenced archaeal and most eukaryal genomes, but not in yeast and bacteria. This coincides with the presence of Ψ54 in most archaeal tRNAs and some animal tRNAs, …

The Fight Over Columbia River Basin Salmon Spills And The Future Of The Lower Snake River Dams, Michael C. Blumm, Doug Deroy Mar 2019

The Fight Over Columbia River Basin Salmon Spills And The Future Of The Lower Snake River Dams, Michael C. Blumm, Doug Deroy

Washington Journal of Environmental Law & Policy

One of the nation’s most longstanding environmental-energy conflicts concerns the plight of numerous Columbia Basin salmon species which must navigate the Federal Columbia River Power System (FCRPS), a series of hydroelectric dams that make the basin one of the most highly developed in the world. Although the FCRPS dams produce a wealth of hydropower, the mortalities they cause due to the construction and operation of FCRPS dams led to Endangered Species Act listings for the basin’s salmon. Since those listings a quarter-century ago, the federal government has repeatedly failed to produce biological opinions that can survive judicial scrutiny. The latest …

Suicide And Euthanasia: The International Perspective On The Right To Die, Zachary A. Feldman

Cornell Law Review

Several countries across the globe have weighed their interests in preserving life, in preventing suicide, and in allowing terminally ill patients to end their lives at their own discretion with, or without, the help of a physician. This Note will highlight the inconsistencies in jurisdictions that treat suicidal ideations both criminally and medically, and ultimately argues for a uniform system of laws that govern mental illness internationally.

On The Basis Of Sex(Ual Orientation Or Gender Identity): Bringing Queer Equity To School With Title Ix, Chan Tov Mcnamarah

Cornell Law Review

A transgender fourth-grader's teacher refuses to address her by her preferred name and gender. A lesbian high-school student's sexual education class does not teach her about topics relevant to her experience as a queer woman. A gay male college student's campus does not have LGBT-specific post-sexual assault care. Under aformal equality approach to Title IX, can any of these discriminations be remedied? Unfortunately not. And yet, recent victories for the LGBT community have been won on formal equality arguments-that LGBT persons should be treated the same as heterosexual, cisgender persons. In the shadow of marriage equality, the LGBT community has …

Al-Nisour Journal for Medical Sciences

Fifty-three CFS patients were enrolled in this study to clarify the main clinical features which shed light on this syndrome and how to discriminate between it and other disorders. Several parameters had been investigated and the results were compared with 35 apparently healthy control volunteers group. The current results revealed that there was highly significant difference between CFS in comparison with control group in main clinical symptoms particularly impaired concentration or temporary loss of memory, headache & generalized fatigue of new types in addition to, unrefreshing sleep and muscle pain (P= <0.001). The present results showed that CFS incidence was higher among females than males who are at age group (20-40) years. Furthermore, majority of CFS patients were over-weight (i.e. BMI =25.9 Kg/m2 ). Women showed higher severity of symptoms than men, particularly obese ones. Finally, it could be concluded that the neuropathy (i.e. cognition) is the main distinct symptom beside unrefreshing sleep made the stock of parameters that differentiate CFS from healthy individuals.

Cannabis For Medical Use: Fda And Dea Regulation In The Hall Of Mirrors, Rebecca S. Eisenberg, Deborah B. Leiderman Mar 2019

Cannabis For Medical Use: Fda And Dea Regulation In The Hall Of Mirrors, Rebecca S. Eisenberg, Deborah B. Leiderman

Articles

A majority of Americans now live in states that purport to authorize medical use of cannabis, although federal law continues to prohibit both recreational and medical use. The current legal regime for cannabis is unstable and may be more effective at deterring research than it is at deterring medical use. Lack of data on medical cannabis products poses public health risks as well as policy and legal challenges. Modified regulatory approaches for other kinds of products provide alternative models for encouraging safety and effectiveness research and providing better information about cannabis products already in clinical use.

Rnd Efflux Pump Systems In Acinetobacter, With Special Emphasis On Theirrole In Quorum Sensing, Bindu Subhadra, Man Hwan Oh, Chul Hee Choi

Faculty Publications - Biological Sciences

Acinetobacter is an important opportunistic, multidrug resistant pathogen causing majority of nosocomial infections worldwide. The multidrug resistance is attributed by a plethora of efflux pumps and the overexpression of the same mediates export of antimicrobial agents. Quorum sensing (QS) is the cell-to-cell communication system in which bacteria produces specific signaling molecules which are transported out to the surrounding environment to communicate with other bacterial cells. It has been noticed that multidrug efflux pumps like resistance-nodulation-cell division (RND) efflux pumps play an important role in QS by exporting these signaling molecules. This review discusses various RND efflux pumps and the current …

Neuroscience And The Personalization Of Criminal Law, Deborah W. Denno

University of Chicago Law Review

While objective standards of reasonableness permeate most legal disciplines, criminal law has trended toward personalization since the 1960s, when the Model Penal Code introduced conceptions of mental states based on Freudian psychoanalytic theory. Today, advancements in neuroscience offer previously inconceivable insights into living brain structures and damage. This Essay contends that a criminal justice system that uses personalizing neuroscientific evidence will yield better outcomes. This Essay contributes two unique tools to the personalized law debate. First are the results of my two-decade-long Neuroscience Study, in which I have compiled eight hundred criminal cases that addressed neuroscientific evidence in any capacity. …

False codling moth (FCM), Thaumatotibia leucotreta is a key pest of citrus orange and other plants causing fruit loss through larval feeding. Although this pest is native to sub-Saharan Africa little is known on its performance on orange and vegetables in Kenya and Tanzania. Our objective was to assess the incidence, oviposition preference and offspring performance of FCM on orange and vegetables, namely, okra, African eggplant, chili and sweet peppers. A higher percentage of orange with FCM damage symptoms was recorded from the ground than from the tree sampled fruit. However, FCM larval incidence was higher for the latter (tree …
