During organogenesis, precise control of spindle orientation balances proliferation and differentiation. In the developing murine epidermis, planar and perpendicular divisions yield symmetric and asymmetric fate outcomes, respectively. Classically, division axis specification involves centrosome migration and spindle rotation, events occurring early in mitosis. Here, we identify a novel orientation mechanism which corrects erroneous anaphase orientations during telophase. The directionality of reorientation correlates with the maintenance or loss of basal contact by the apical daughter. While the scaffolding protein LGN is known to determine initial spindle positioning, we show that LGN also functions during telophase to reorient oblique divisions toward perpendicular. The …

Why Gamma Distribution Of Seismic Inter-Event Times: A Theoretical Explanation, Laxman Bokati, Aaron A. Velasco, Vladik Kreinovich
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
It is known that the distribution of seismic inter-event times is well described by the Gamma distribution. Recently, this fact has been used to successfully predict major seismic events. In this paper, we explain that the Gamma distribution of seismic inter-event times can be naturally derived from the first principles.

Rohrer College of Business Departmental Research
The 2016 presidential election had important implications for the country’s health care policies. In this study, we examine the health care industry stock returns associated with the 2016 presidential campaign. We use both market model and seemingly unrelated regression (SUR) methodologies to estimate abnormal stock returns of each health care sector associated with each event. Our results are robust and mostly consistent with our arguments. The regression analysis further augments our event study results. We find that, during the pre-election period, the Biological Products, Health Insurance, and Major Pharmaceuticals all suffer significantly negative cumulative average abnormal returns (CAARs). The Hospital/Nursing …

Adaptive laboratory evolution (ALE) is a powerful tool used to increase strain fitness in the presence of environmental stressors. If production and strain fitness can be coupled, ALE can be used to increase product formation. In earlier work, carotenoids hyperproducing mutants were obtained using an ALE strategy. Here, de novo mutations were identified in hyperproducers, and reconstructed mutants were explored to determine the exact impact of each mutation on production and tolerance. A single mutation in YMRCTy1-3 conferred increased carotenoid production, and when combined with other beneficial mutations led to further increased β-carotene production. Findings also suggest that the ALE …

Dynamics In A Respiratory Control Model With Two Delays, Saroj P. Pradhan, Ferenc Hartung, Janos Turi
Dynamics In A Respiratory Control Model With Two Delays, Saroj P. Pradhan, Ferenc Hartung, Janos Turi
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
In this paper we study ventilation patterns in a set of parameter dependent nonlinear delay equations with two transport delays modeling the human respiratory control system with peripheral and central control loops. We present a convergent numerical scheme suitable to perform simulations when all disturbances and system parameters are known, then we consider the numerical identifiability of various system parameters based on ventilation data. We are especially interested in the identification of the transport delays in the control loops because these parameters are not measurable directly, but they have a strong influence on system stability/instability.

Bio-Inspired Polymers As Models For Determination Of Non-Covalent Structure/Binding Interactions With Amyloid Β Peptides, Gliadin, And Bovine Γ-Crystallin, Ashleigh Bristol
Dissertations
This dissertation focuses on the development of bio-inspired polymers as models to evaluate binding modes with various proteins through specific design of pendent functionality. Genetic variances can result in abnormal protein behavior in the body, such as aggregation events or mislabeling as an antigen, where polymer/protein complexation can provide insight into protein stability and potential therapeutic approaches. Polymer/protein interactions on the molecular level can occur through various modes, such as hydrogen bonding, electrostatic binding, and hydrophobic interactions. Polymers of different architectures containing acrylamido backbone structures were utilized to study structure/binding interactions in vitro, with the goal of advancing knowledge in …

In this paper, we investigate the release of heavy metals from sludge produced from an electrical industry using both organic and inorganic acids. Single and sequential extractions were conducted to assess heavy metals in different phases of the sludge. Metal release from sludge was investigated in the presence of three inorganic acids (nitric, sulfuric, and phosphoric) and three organic acids (acetic, malic, and citric) at concentrations ranging from 0.1 to 2.0 mol L−1. Sequential extraction indicated the presence of Cu primarily in the carbonate fraction, Pb in the residual fraction, and Ni in the FeMn oxide fraction. The cumulative release …

Production of flagella is costly and subject to global multilayered regulation, which is reflected in the hierarchical control of flagellar production in many bacterial species. For Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium and its relatives, global regulation of flagellar production primarily occurs through the control of flhDC transcription and mRNA translation. In this study, the roles of the homologous multidrug resistance regulators MarA, SoxS, Rob, and RamA (constituting the mar-sox-rob regulon in S. Typhimurium) in regulating flagellar gene expression were explored. Each of these regulators was found to inhibit flagellar gene expression, production of flagella, and motility. To different degrees, repression via …

Background: In the arms race between hosts and parasites, genes involved in the immune response are targets for natural selection. Toll-Like Receptor (TLR) genes play a role in parasite detection as part of the innate immune system whereas Major Histocompatibility Complex (MHC) genes encode proteins that display antigens as part of the vertebrate adaptive immune system. Thus, both gene families are under selection pressure from pathogens. The bananaquit (Coereba flaveola) is a passerine bird that is a common host of avian malarial parasites (Plasmodium sp. and Haemoproteus sp.). We assessed molecular variation of TLR and MHC genes in a wild …

Cyclic GMP (cGMP) is an important regulator in eukaryotes, and cGMP-dependent protein kinase (PKG) plays a key role in perceiving cellular cGMP in diverse physiological processes in animals. However, the molecular identity, property, and function of PKG in plants remain elusive. In this study, we have identified PKG from plants and characterized its role in mediating the gibberellin (GA) response in rice (Oryza sativa). PKGs from plants are structurally unique with an additional type 2C protein phosphatase domain. Rice PKG possesses both protein kinase and phosphatase activities, and cGMP stimulates its kinase activity but inhibits its phosphatase activity. One of …

Maritime Environmental Violations Within Nigeria & Its Impacts, Chinedu Chidia Maduekwe
Honor’s College Freeman Research Journal
The maritime industry contributes its own fair share of pollution within Nigerian ports and communities by way of crude oil spills and inappropriate waste management facilities. This spills often occur on wetlands needed for commercial maritime activities and economic survival by local inhibitors. The inadequate disposal of ship waste by privately owned waste management facilities can lead to the encouragement of illicit disposal of waste and ballast into the sea before registering into ports and terminals. Such waste can introduce toxic and noxious liquids into waters affecting marine lifeforms and indirectly, local communities. as a result of such incident, a …
