Insecta Mundi
Sapodilla (Manilkara zapota (L.) van Royen) is originally from the Neotropics, and has become one of the most important tropical crops in the last few decades. The major producers include India, Mexico, Sri Lanka, the Philippines, Venezuela and Guatemala. It is also a minor crop in the United States, specifically South Florida. In 2015, it was reported that Florida growers suffered a loss of up to 80% of their production due to lepidopteran pests. We surveyed two sapodilla orchards weekly in South Florida for about six months. We collected 1,070 lepidopteran individuals (i.e., larvae, pupae and adults) belonging to seven …

Phase Field Crystal Modeling Of Materials Evolution In The Presence Of Nanoscale Pores, Abash Sharma
Phase Field Crystal Modeling Of Materials Evolution In The Presence Of Nanoscale Pores, Abash Sharma
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Porosity causes cracks and many other defects in materials. The understanding of how pores affect the kinetics and material solidification remains largely lacking. Phase field crystal (PFC) modeling is a continuum approach that has been used to study phase behaviors and kinetics of many processes over wide ranges of length scales and over diffusive timescales. This thesis focuses on the development of a PFC model for materials with circular pores. From the model’s free energy functional, a Langevin equation for the density field is derived and integrated numerically over a wide range of system parameters. We found that the pore's …
Between Earth And Sky: Crafting An Architecture Of Presence, Holly-Lynn Tedder
Between Earth And Sky: Crafting An Architecture Of Presence, Holly-Lynn Tedder
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
A duality exists within the experience of architecture. For many years, architects have privileged the intellectual or conceptual dimensions of design over the haptic experience of architecture, compounding a split between mind and body within our highly technologized society. We need an architecture that brings us back to the present moment. By uniting haptic experience with intellectual understanding of place, an Architecture of Presence can create a complete human experience. Explored through the design of an ecological research field laboratory in Shelby Forest, thoughtful crafting of spatial experience using material and light, modulated by contrast, leads to increased awareness and …

Molecular Assay Optimization For Enhanced Detection Of Legionella Spp. In Passaic County, New Jersey, Paul Yoon
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
Legionella spp. are gram-negative bacteria that are found in a wide range of freshwater environments such as lakes, streams, soil, and manmade water systems. The Legionella genera contains 58 species of bacteria and of them approximately half have been linked to human disease. Infection due to Legionella spp. is known as Legionellosis, which consists of Legionnaires’ disease and Pontiac fever. Legionnaires’ disease cases have been increasing in recent years and the CDC report 7,500 cases in 2017. Infection from Legionella occurs through inhalation of aerosolized water droplets and leads to infection of alveolar macrophages. Legionella pneumophila is responsible for 90% …

Background: Gingivo-buccal oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC-GB) is the most common cancer among men in India and is associated with high mortality. Although OSCC-GB is known to be quite different from tongue cancer in its genomic presentation and its clinical behavior, it is treated identically as tongue cancer. Predictive markers of prognosis and therapy that are specific to OSCC-GB are, therefore, required. Although genomic drivers of OSCC-GB have been identified by whole exome and whole genome sequencing, no epigenome-wide study has been conducted in OSCC-GB; our study has filled this gap, and has discovered and validated epigenomic hallmarks of gingivobuccal …

Chronic critical illness is a global clinical issue affecting millions of sepsis survivors annually. Survivors report chronic skeletal muscle weakness and development of new functional limitations that persist for years. To delineate mechanisms of sepsis-induced chronic weakness, we first surpassed a critical barrier by establishing a murine model of sepsis with ICU-like interventions that allows for the study of survivors. We show that sepsis survivors have profound weakness for at least 1 month, even after recovery of muscle mass. Abnormal mitochondrial ultrastructure, impaired respiration and electron transport chain activities, and persistent protein oxidative damage were evident in the muscle of …

Methods And Application For Tracking Seedling Fate On The Utah Test And Training Range, Jesse Randal Morris
Theses and Dissertations
Remote sensing of the environment has become an effective and useful research approach applied across a wide range of scientific and professional disciplines. Generally remote sensing is used to evaluate patterns and processes at broad spatio-temporal scales, such as classifying landscape vegetation patterns or for creating digital surface models, however, there are increasing opportunities to expand the use of remotely sensed information to a wider range of applications at variable spatial and temporal scales. In the field of plant seedling and germination research methods are needed to improve plant establishment and restoration monitoring, particularly in areas that have historically low …
High-Throughput Nano-Scale Characterization Of Membrane Proteins Using Fluorescence-Detection Size-Exclusion Chromatography, Alex J. Vecchio, Robert M. Stroud
High-Throughput Nano-Scale Characterization Of Membrane Proteins Using Fluorescence-Detection Size-Exclusion Chromatography, Alex J. Vecchio, Robert M. Stroud
Department of Biochemistry: Faculty Publications
Structural biology has revealed predicting heterologous expression levels, homogeneity, and stability of a protein from its primary structure are exceedingly difficult. Membrane proteins, in particular, present numerous challenges that make obtaining milligram quantities of quality samples problematic. For structural and functional investigation of these molecules, however, this is what is required. Fluorescence size-exclusion chromatography (F-SEC), a technique where a protein of biological interest is fused to green fluorescent protein (GFP) and monitored, circumvents many bottlenecks inherent to membrane protein structural biology. In vivo expression yields, as well as in vitro homogeneity and stability, can be rapidly evaluated utilizing nanogram quantities …
