Stranded Behind Bars: The Failure Of Retributive Justice (Research Materials), Holy Cross Libraries

Library Resources for Campus Events

A bibliography of resources available through the Holy Cross Libraries which provide additional information related to "Stranded Behind Bars: The Failure of Retributive Justice," a lecture by Erin Kelly, professor of philosophy at Tufts University and author of “The Limits of Blame: Rethinking Punishment and Responsibility” (Harvard University Press, 2018), who explains how retributive justice exaggerates the moral meaning of criminal guilt, normalizes excessive punishment, and distracts from shared responsibility for social injustice.

The lecture was sponsored by the Rev. Michael C. McFarland, S.J. Center for Religion, Ethics and Culture, and was held at the College of the Holy Cross …

An Amyloid Core Sequence In The Major Candida Albicans Adhesin Als1p Mediates Cell-Cell Adhesion, Vida Ho, Philippe Herman-Bausier, Christopher Shaw, Karen A. Conrad, Melissa C. Garcia-Sherman, Jeremy Draghi, Yves F. Dufrene, Peter N. Lipke, Jason M. Rauceo Oct 2019

An Amyloid Core Sequence In The Major Candida Albicans Adhesin Als1p Mediates Cell-Cell Adhesion, Vida Ho, Philippe Herman-Bausier, Christopher Shaw, Karen A. Conrad, Melissa C. Garcia-Sherman, Jeremy Draghi, Yves F. Dufrene, Peter N. Lipke, Jason M. Rauceo

Publications and Research

ABSTRACT The human fungal commensal Candida albicans can become a serious opportunistic pathogen in immunocompromised hosts. The C. albicans cell adhesion protein Als1p is a highly expressed member of a large family of paralogous adhesins. Als1p can mediate binding to epithelial and endothelial cells, is upregulated in infections, and is important for biofilm formation. Als1p includes an amyloidforming sequence at amino acids 325 to 331, identical to the sequence in the paralogs Als5p and Als3p. Therefore, we mutated Val326 to test whether this sequence is important for activity. Wild-type Als1p (Als1pWT) and Als1p with the V326N mutation (Als1pV326N) were expressed …

State Constitutional Provisions Allowing Juries To Interpret The Law Are Not As Crazy As They Sound, Marcus Alexander Gadson Oct 2019

State Constitutional Provisions Allowing Juries To Interpret The Law Are Not As Crazy As They Sound, Marcus Alexander Gadson

St. John's Law Review

(Excerpt)

This Article questions that consensus. Joining a larger debate about the jury’s proper role, it argues that, even today, these provisions are a defensible component of a criminal justice system. First, this Article argues that the jury is the entity in the justice system most incentivized to approach legal questions with an eye to what the best interpretation is and not the most politically palatable result. Second, this Article argues that the jury’s ability to deliberate and consider opinions from individuals hailing from a wider variety of backgrounds than those who typically become judges may provide advantages over a …

Does “Hurt” Help? A Review Of Miriam Boeri’S Hurt: Chronicles Of The Drug War Generation, George K. Danns Dr. Oct 2019

Does “Hurt” Help? A Review Of Miriam Boeri’S Hurt: Chronicles Of The Drug War Generation, George K. Danns Dr.

The Journal of Public and Professional Sociology

ABSTRACT

This article is a review of the book “HURT: Chronicles of the Drug War Generation” by Miriam Boeri. Through ethnographic research the author provides interpretative explorations of the personal lives and moral careers of 100 Baby Boomers addicted to illicit drugs, ensnared in the criminal justice system, buffeted by other agencies of social control and continuously marginalized by mainstream society. This review questions whether the author adhered to the norm of “value neutrality” in conducting the study and whether the study design and conclusions are characterized by bias? The book presented a contest between agency and social …

The Protective Influence Of Self-Compassion Against Internalized Racism Among African Americans, Alexandra Emery Oct 2019

The Protective Influence Of Self-Compassion Against Internalized Racism Among African Americans, Alexandra Emery

College of Education and Human Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Racist experiences and internalized racism may lead to poorer mental health outcomes for African Americans born and socialized in the United States (Graham, West, Martinez & Roemer, 2016; Mouzon & McLean, 2017). Self-compassion has been shown to protect against poor mental health outcomes, but limited research exists with respect to African Americans specifically (Lockard, Hayes, Neff and Locke, 2014). The present study explored whether self-compassion could serve as a protective factor between the relations of internalized racism and racist experiences, and the negative mental health outcomes of anxiety, depression, and stress among (N = 230) African American adults. To …

When You're Out, You're Not Really Out: Exiting Strategies Among Gang-Affiliated Chicanas, Abigail F. Kolb, Ted Palys, Ashley Green Oct 2019

When You're Out, You're Not Really Out: Exiting Strategies Among Gang-Affiliated Chicanas, Abigail F. Kolb, Ted Palys, Ashley Green

The Journal of Public and Professional Sociology

In recent years there has been an increased focus on gang desistence and exiting strategies, yet little is known at present regarding the experiences of women exiting the gang lifestyle. The current study, based on semi-structured interviews with twenty-four formerly gang-affiliated Chicana women involved with a prominent gang prevention/intervention organization, sought to understand how these women negotiated their disengagement from the gang. Consistent with previous literature, we found that disengagement from the gang lifestyle is neither linear nor immediate. Five primary themes that emerged from the interviews included: (1) the process of identity transition; (2) motherhood and its responsibilities; (3) …

Effects Of Management Support, Team Member Support, And Job Status On Safety Climate And Employee Attitudes, Bernadette M. Racicot, Mary C. Kernan, Edward D. Nichols Oct 2019

Effects Of Management Support, Team Member Support, And Job Status On Safety Climate And Employee Attitudes, Bernadette M. Racicot, Mary C. Kernan, Edward D. Nichols

Organization Management Journal

This study examined the impact of management and team member support on employee attitudes through the mediating effect of safety climate. Five hundred fifty-six physicians and nurses from a large teaching hospital in the eastern United States completed survey items assessing their perceptions of management support, team member support, and safety climate as well as job satisfaction and organizational commitment. Results indicated that while job satisfaction and commitment were directly affected by perceptions of management and team member support, these relationships were also partially mediated by safety climate. In addition, the results suggested that team member support contributed to the …
