Trichology: A Study Of Hair And Its Uses As Trace Evidence, Amanda Landron
Ursidae: The Undergraduate Research Journal at the University of Northern Colorado
The purpose of this research was to study the characteristics of hair for the use as trace evidence. These characteristics are being used to add validity and reliability from the use of hair to confirm the identity of a person. Eight different humans and one dog hair samples were collected and compared to identify a fictional suspect. All of the hairs, including the primary suspect’s, were collected from a fictional crime scene. The characteristics were analyzed using a polarized microscope to microscopically compare the hairs and a ForensicGEM® DNA Extraction Kit, ZyGEM was used to extract DNA from the samples. …

The Influence Of Media Consumption On Trust, Political Efficacy And Social Media Activism Among Young Adults, Kerra Mccorkle- Akanbi
Dissertations
For many years, trust in government and political efficacy has increasingly been an area of interest for political scientist. Recently, social media activism has become just as intriguing. With social media playing such a dominant role in society, individuals are consuming news through their social media timelines, without having to seek it out themselves. This is especially true for young adults. Through the advancement of non-traditional media outlets, this generation is submerged in endless Facebook statuses, tweets, and television coverage of civil unrest and political polarization that has certainly had both social and political implications. While past studies conducted by …

From “Whores” To “Victims”: The Rise And Status Of Sex Trafficking Courts, Teresa C. Kulig, Leah C. Butler
From “Whores” To “Victims”: The Rise And Status Of Sex Trafficking Courts, Teresa C. Kulig, Leah C. Butler
Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty Publications
Views of people involved in the commercial sex trade have shifted. Once seen as prostitutes or “whores,” they are increasingly perceived as exploited “victims.” The behavior associated with commercial sex has been redefined from voluntary and disreputable to coerced and deserving of rescue. This new framework is part of a broader anti-trafficking movement in society to recognize and save vulnerable individuals who are exploited for sex. In this context, the model of problem-solving or specialty courts has been extended to sex trafficking cases. The goal first is to identify trafficking victims–also known as “victim-defendants”–and then to address their risk factors …

Extent Of Violence And Danger Of Homicide Before And After Abused Women Seek Help, Pamela Willson
Dissertations
A descriptive longitudinal study was conducted to evaluate the extent of violence and danger for homicide experienced by women before and after they filed assault against an intimate partner through a Family Violence Unit (FVU) of a large urban police department. A consecutive sample of 90 women were interviewed at the FVU using three instruments: Demographic Data Form (DDF), Danger Assessment (DA) (Campbell, 1986) scale, and Severity of Violence Against Women Scale (SVAWS) (Marshall, 1992). Of the women, 54% were African-American, 28% Latino/Hispanic, and 14% Caucasian. Ages ranged from 19 to 59 years ( M = 3 1, SD = …

Being A Prison Chaplain In A Godless Country: An Exploration Of The Czech Correctional Chaplaincy, Andrea Beláňová, Tereza Trejbalova, Bridget Kelley
Graduate Research Symposium (2018 - present)
Prison chaplaincy, along with religiosity in the criminal justice system, are widely researched in the US (e.g.,Maruna, Wilson, & Curran, 2006; Sundt & Cullen, 1998). The Czech Republic remains one of the most secular countries in the world; about 72% of the population does not identify with any religion or church (Pew Research Center, 2017). The religious landscape in the country lead to prison chaplains being a largely unexplored population, existing in the tension between a total institution and their church. Due to the lack of research concerning this population in the Czech republic, this study aims to examine the …

Exploring The Women’S Needs And Risks Assessment (Wrna) In The Czech Republic, Tereza Trejbalova, Emily J. Salisbury
Graduate Research Symposium (2018 - present)
The focus of practitioners and academics alike has been shifting towards gender-responsive treatment of justice-involved women. One instrument that accounts for the realities of justice-involved women is the Women’s Needs and Risks Assessment (WRNA). In order to inquire about its validity outside the US, this tool was piloted in the Czech Republic in 2016 with 148 women prisoners. The study examined whether the WRNA is valid in the Czech Republic, and how well it predicts the disciplinary infractions of incarcerated women with different cultural backgrounds. Results suggest external validity of the WRNA as several of the gender-neutral (e.g., antisocial friends) …
Femicide In The News: How Newspaper Articles Represent The Killing Of Women & Girls In Detroit And Ciudad Juárez, Danielle Branch
Femicide In The News: How Newspaper Articles Represent The Killing Of Women & Girls In Detroit And Ciudad Juárez, Danielle Branch
Honors Theses
In the year 2017 alone, 87,000 women were intentionally murdered across the globe, while 58% of these victims were murdered by someone they knew — family members or intimate partners (Global Study on Homicide: Gender-Related Killing of Women and Girls, 2018). The intentional killing of women and girls, typically by men and motivated by gender, is classified as a crime called “femicide.” Broader definitions of femicide simply state that it is the murder of women and girls, by someone of any gender, regardless of their motive. In some regions of the world, this phenomenon is more prevalent than in others. …

The Sources Of Violent And Nonviolent Offending Among Women In Prison, Benjamin M. Steiner, Emily M. Wright, Sara Toto
Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty Publications
This study involved an assessment of the relevance of women’s background characteristics for predicting their offending in prison. Data were collected from over 650 women confined in a large prison for women in a Midwestern state, and the relative effects of these factors were examined. Findings revealed that background characteristics reflecting social demographics (e.g. race, sexual orientation) and women’s life experiences (e.g. abuse as a child) were relevant for predicting women’s violent and nonviolent misbehavior in prison.

An Examination of Sexual Assault Resource Programs in West Virginia
Every 98 seconds, an individual in the United States is sexually assaulted (WV FRIS 2018). This means that one out of every six individuals in our country is the victim of an attempted or completed assault in their lifetime. Rural communities tend to have fewer resources when it comes to victims of sexual assault, and this type of victimization is often underreported in these communities. Specifically, in 2015 an estimated 19% of rape and sexual assault victimizations were reported to the police in urban areas, compared to an estimated 2% …
The Peacemakers: Navigating The Intersection Of Biblical Justice And Contemporary Policing, Nathan Brown
The Peacemakers: Navigating The Intersection Of Biblical Justice And Contemporary Policing, Nathan Brown
Senior Honors Theses
For Christians seeking to enter the field of policing, the question of justice is answered by two separate sources. Conceptions of justice are presented by both the contemporary justice system and the Bible. The history and current state of American policing reveal a sense of justice that is concerned with fighting crime and defending the rights of the vulnerable. There are, however, inherent limitations when operating within a system made by man. Biblical justice goes further by prioritizing restoration and redeemed relationships within its conception of justice. Reconciling these two perspectives equips Christian police officers with a framework with which …

Implementation Considerations For The Digital Bronco Id, Bryan Gilginas
Honors Theses
This paper aims to discuss the conditions and preferences of students that Western Michigan University should take if they ever implement a Digital Bronco ID. These conditions are found via an anonymous survey given to random students. These students were prompted to answer questions based on their preference and possible uses of the Digital Bronco ID. It was found that the respondents were significantly diverse in their answers. However, things such as gender, major, and age range played a significant role in patterns in which students chose their preferences. Within the paper, these patterns are interpreted and discussed for the …
“I Am Whatever You Say I Am”: The Social Construction Of Identity In Rural Drug-Using Women’S Narratives, Amanda Bolton
“I Am Whatever You Say I Am”: The Social Construction Of Identity In Rural Drug-Using Women’S Narratives, Amanda Bolton
Dissertations
Previous narrative criminology research has examined how drug users manage their identities through discussions of themselves, while providing little insight into how they manage their identities through discussions of others(McIntosh & McKeganey, 2000; Rødner, 2005; Sandberg, 2009).It is important to consider others because according to many symbolic interactionists (Cooley, 1902; Goffman, 1959; Mead, 1934), identity is a social product that is constructed and maintained through social interaction with others and is based on perceptions of others. Cooley (1902) more specifically argued that one’s primary group (i.e., those that are relationally or proximally close to an individual) are even …

Effect Of Religion On Domestic Violence Perpetration Among American Adults, Cassidy Mitchell
Effect Of Religion On Domestic Violence Perpetration Among American Adults, Cassidy Mitchell
Theses
After Hirschi and Stark’s Hellfire and Delinquency (1969), researchers have been seeking to determine whether there is a correlational link between religion and crime. This paper seeks to add to the literature by correlating domestic violence with four elements of religion (use of belief to solve everyday problems, prayer frequency, religious importance, and attendance of worship) that correspond with the four elements of Hirschi’s social control theory (attachment, commitment, belief, and involvement, respectively) (1969). It also includes male victims of domestic violence among female victims, unlike most previous literature. Using a series of logistic regression models, only attendance of worship, …
