Effects Of Regulation Intensity On Marijuana Black Market After Legalization, Sikang Song Jul 2019

Effects Of Regulation Intensity On Marijuana Black Market After Legalization, Sikang Song

Dissertations and Theses

Since 2012, many states and Canada have legalized the use and sale of recreational marijuana. One of the expected benefits of the legalization is that the establishment of a legal cannabis market would eliminate the black market which has been the main form of marijuana trade for decades. Even though legal options are available for marijuana producers and consumers, the black market is still thriving in states where recreational marijuana has been legalized. The reasons behind the persistence of the marijuana black market are complex. One of the main arguments is that the legalized states have failed to establish a …

Confronting The Twenty-First-Century Marian Examination, Lauren Mclane

Faculty Articles

Today forensic evidence has increasingly become a key and powerful witness against the accused in criminal trials In the Sixth Amendment Confrontation Clause our Framers meant to create a safeguard that would forever test the reliability of evidence introduced against a defendant As Justice Scalia reminded us in Crawford v Washington ÔÇ£To be sure the Clause's ultimate goal is to ensure reliability of evidence but it is a procedural rather than a substantive guarantee It commands not that evidence be reliable but that reliability be assessed in a particular manner by testing in the crucible of crossexaminationÔÇØ Nonetheless courts across …

Social Networks Moderate The Syndemic Effect Of Psychosocial And Structural Factors On Hiv Risk Among Young Black Transgender Women And Men Who Have Sex With Men, Dexter R. Voisin Jul 2019

Social Networks Moderate The Syndemic Effect Of Psychosocial And Structural Factors On Hiv Risk Among Young Black Transgender Women And Men Who Have Sex With Men, Dexter R. Voisin

Faculty Scholarship

The interaction between the cumulative effect of psychosocial and structural factors (i.e. syndemic effect) and social networks among young Black transgender women and men who have sex with men (YBTM) remains understudied. A representative cohort of 16–29 year-old YBTM (n = 618) was assessed for syndemic factors [i.e. substance use; community violence; depression; poverty; justice system involvement (JSI)], social network characteristics, condomless anal sex (CAS), group sex (GS), and HIV-infection. The syndemic index significantly increased the odds of CAS, GS, and HIV-infection, and these effects were moderated by network characteristics. Network JSI buffered the effect on CAS, romantic network members …

Efforts Targeting Factors Of Health Disparities That Impair Hiv Treatment Engagement, Graham F. Watts Sr, Heather Vaughan Jul 2019

Efforts Targeting Factors Of Health Disparities That Impair Hiv Treatment Engagement, Graham F. Watts Sr, Heather Vaughan

Florida Public Health Review

Health disparities exist in Northeast Florida. Some locations experience morbidities at higher rates than others. Health zone 1 is a prime example. Differences in disease rates are interlaced with the social determinants of health, (SDOH). Long-standing social and structural influences of disparities are beyond the scope of Ryan White programs. However, empowerment for health promotion is a strategy for targeting health disparities. The Theory of Health Empowerment targets sense of agency and offers some leverage for helping people living with HIV/AIDS, (PLWHA) despite environments blemished by SDOH. Eclectic leadership occurring in a climate of respectful point-counter point discussions established the …

Bystander Intervention, Victimization, And Routine Activities Theory: An Examination Of Feminist Routine Activities Theory In Cyber Space, Jennifer A. Leili Jul 2019

Bystander Intervention, Victimization, And Routine Activities Theory: An Examination Of Feminist Routine Activities Theory In Cyber Space, Jennifer A. Leili

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Routine Activities Theory (RAT) is one of the most widely used theories to explain victimization. It has been applied to a wide range of criminal victimizations, such as property crimes (Miethe, Stafford, & Long, 1987) and urban murder (Messner & Tardiff, 1985). While traditional RAT has been used to explain violence against women, the feminist perspective of RAT developed by Schwartz and Pitts (1995) provides a better explanation by incorporating cultural factors that shape the conditions that give rise to offending. The current study draws on feminist RAT in order to explore three different types of victimization involving women: stalking, …

Longitudinal Measurement Invariance Of The Child Problematic Trait Inventory In Older Chinese Children, Jie Luo, Xuetong Wong, Meng-Cheng Wang, Xintong Zhang, Jiaxin Deng, Chuxian Zhong, Yu Gao, Shi-San Qi Jul 2019

Longitudinal Measurement Invariance Of The Child Problematic Trait Inventory In Older Chinese Children, Jie Luo, Xuetong Wong, Meng-Cheng Wang, Xintong Zhang, Jiaxin Deng, Chuxian Zhong, Yu Gao, Shi-San Qi

Publications and Research

The Child Problematic Traits Inventory (CPTI) is a newly developed informant-rated instrument to measure psychopathic traits during early childhood. The aim of this study was to examine the longitudinal measurement invariance of the CPTI in a group of Chinese schoolchildren. Mothers of 585 children aged 8 to 12 years (50% girls) completed the CPTI twice with one-year interval. Confirmatory factor analyses showed that the CPTI had strict invariance (i.e., equality of factor patterns, loadings, intercepts, and item uniqueness) across time. Furthermore, the internal consistencies for the CPTI subscales were good at both time points and the stability coefficients over time …

In Another's Voice: Making Sense Of Reproductive Health As Women Of Color, Nivethitha Ketheeswaran Jul 2019

In Another's Voice: Making Sense Of Reproductive Health As Women Of Color, Nivethitha Ketheeswaran

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The goals of this project are twofold. The first goal is to articulate my sense making of reproductive health for Women of color in the United States as a postcolonial condition; one that I trace back to the logics of elimination of settler colonialism (Wolfe, 2006) and frame as maintained through the colonial institutions, or racial projects (Omi & Winant, 2015), of the Prison Industrial Complex, the welfare system, and the health care system which create and perpetuate dominant cultural narratives of “the welfare queen”, “the negligent Black mother”, and “the wily patient”. I show how these narratives colonize the …

An Intersectional Examination Of Criminally Involved Women Of Color With Mental Illness, Cailin Rosemary Mcdermott Jul 2019

An Intersectional Examination Of Criminally Involved Women Of Color With Mental Illness, Cailin Rosemary Mcdermott

Theses and Dissertations

Women, people of color, and people with mental illness are fast growing populations in the criminal justice system. However, research tends to overlook the women of color with mental illness who exist at the intersection of these statuses. The current thesis attempts to apply an intersectional framework to the analysis of the narratives of these multifaceted women to explore the ways that their varying positions in society interact to shape unique life experiences. I analyzed a secondary data set of semi-structured life-course interviews with 65 women on a Seriously Mentally Ill (SMI) probation caseload. Implementing a grounded-inspired approach, the interviews …

“You Shouldn’T Worry Walking A Block And A Half To Your Car”: Perceptions Of Crime And Community Norms In The Bakken Oil Play, Jessica Ulrich-Schad, Michael Fedder, Julie Yingling Jul 2019

“You Shouldn’T Worry Walking A Block And A Half To Your Car”: Perceptions Of Crime And Community Norms In The Bakken Oil Play, Jessica Ulrich-Schad, Michael Fedder, Julie Yingling

Sociology, Social Work and Anthropology Faculty Publications

The Bakken oil play experienced substantial population growth from oil and gas development over the last decade, resulting in disruption to social norms at the community level. We surveyed residents in a county in Montana and a county in North Dakota about their perceptions of crime resulting from the most recent boom, finding that residents perceived high levels of various types of crimes resulting from the boom and that many also changed their daily behavior out of fear of such crime. In addition, we asked about current perceptions of community norms and find evidence that perceived levels of helping and …

A Multi-Dimensional Macrolevel Study Of Drug Enforcement Strategies, Heroin Prices, And Heroin Consumption Rates, Alexander G. Toth Jul 2019

A Multi-Dimensional Macrolevel Study Of Drug Enforcement Strategies, Heroin Prices, And Heroin Consumption Rates, Alexander G. Toth

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

American policy makers primarily embrace a deterrent-based policing agenda to curb illicit drug trafficking and use that relies on the principles of the economic price elasticity of demand (Boynum & Reuter, 2005). This counter-drug platform includes three fundamental programs: arresting offenders, seizing illicit drugs, and eradicating horticultural sources of illicit drugs (U.S. DEA, 2015). One of the main goals of these programs is to deter illegal trafficking and use by increasing the price of illicit substances so they are no longer attractive to consumers. The United States has weathered various drug use epidemics during its history, and currently it is …

Understanding Trans Racialized Youth Autonomy In Health Care Decision Making In Ontario, Gitanjali Natasha Lena Jul 2019

Understanding Trans Racialized Youth Autonomy In Health Care Decision Making In Ontario, Gitanjali Natasha Lena

LLM Theses

This thesis re-evaluates the concept of autonomy and the possibilities for trans racialized youth to practice it in current health care decision making contexts. After discussing access to health care in Ontario for this demographic using diverse research, an analytical foundation is laid using legal pluralism, relational autonomy, transgender theory and disidentification theory. The study uses Photovoice with trans racialized youth to produce visual texts analysed using thematic network analysis. Secondly, the study considers how together, law and medicine discursively work to encourage law-makers and health care providers to undermine the autonomy of trans racialized youth. Authoritative diagnostic and clinical …

The Rise And Fall Of Focused Deterrence Initiatives, Chandra Lynore Joseph Jul 2019

The Rise And Fall Of Focused Deterrence Initiatives, Chandra Lynore Joseph

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Following the national uptick of violence across the country, societal angst has once again begun to surface. Those in positions of authority began to look to the criminal justice system for ways to address this cyclical issue. Traditionally, applying law enforcement crackdowns and increased penalties and sanctions to the offenders were the main topics of discussion. However, over the last two decades, problem-oriented policing has begun to emerge. Problem-oriented policing works to identify why things are going wrong and to frame responses using a wide variety of often untraditional approaches (Goldstein 1979). One of the problem-oriented frameworks known as the …

Social Determinants Of Health In Idaho: Evidence Based Models For Bridging The Clinical To Community Gap, Mcallister Hall, Gabe Osterhout, Lantz Mcginnis-Brown, Vanessa Crossgrove Fry

Idaho Policy Institute Reports

The focus of modern health care is changing. Today, it is widely recognized that health care doesn’t just happen at the doctor’s office; it happens in our home, work and school environments, and it is impacted by the socioeconomic context, or social determinants of health (SDOH), in those environments.

Recognizing this, the Blue Cross of Idaho Foundation for Health (Foundation) launched the Healthcare Innovation Initiative to bridge the gap between clinical and community services to create business solutions that address this shifting landscape of health care.

SDOH can be addressed through numerous channels in a community, this literature review identifies …

Thinking Quantum: A New Perspective On Decisionmaking In Law, Christopher B. Jaeger, Jennifer S. Trueblood Jul 2019

Thinking Quantum: A New Perspective On Decisionmaking In Law, Christopher B. Jaeger, Jennifer S. Trueblood

Florida State University Law Review

Behavioral law and economics (BLE) is built on the observation that human decisionmaking is often incompatible with rational choice theory. But if our decisions do not follow the rules of rational choice theory, is there a general set of rules they do follow? Can BLE offer a coherent alternative to rational choice? To the extent it has addressed these questions, BLE has struggled with them. But an emerging psychological theory called "quantum decisionmaking" may offer answers. Quantum decisionmaking offers a new perspective on how people think about probabilities-one that challenges core assumptions of rational choice theory. Specifically, quantum decisionmaking assumes …

The Endogenous Fourth Amendment: An Empirical Assessment Of How Police Understandings Of Excessive Force Become Constitutional Law, Osagie K. Obasogie, Zachary Newman Jul 2019

The Endogenous Fourth Amendment: An Empirical Assessment Of How Police Understandings Of Excessive Force Become Constitutional Law, Osagie K. Obasogie, Zachary Newman

Cornell Law Review

If the Fourth Amendment is designed to protect citizens from law enforcement abusing its powers, why are so many unarmed Americans killed? Traditional understandings of the Fourth Amendment suggest that it has an exogenous effect on police use of force, Le., that the Fourth Amendment provides the ground rules for how and when law enforcement can use force that police departments turn into use-of-force policies that ostensibly limit police violence. In this Article, we question whether this exogenous understanding of the Fourth Amendment in relation to excessive force claims is accurate by engaging in an empirical assessment of the use-of-force …

The Use Of Vouchers To Negatively Reinforce Number Of Weeks Compliant Among Clients In A Mental Health Court, Michele Nicole Murdock Jul 2019

The Use Of Vouchers To Negatively Reinforce Number Of Weeks Compliant Among Clients In A Mental Health Court, Michele Nicole Murdock

Dissertations

The literature is sparse on the use of contingency management procedures in a mental health court (MHC). The purpose of this study was to examine the use of negative reinforcement for behavioral changes in a MHC. Specifically, the present study explored whether a voucher-based contingency management intervention improved the number of weeks compliant on MHC probation and whether participants were more externally than internally motivated to comply with MHC probation requirements. Vouchers were given for compliance with MHC probation requirements. The vouchers allowed participants to miss a future court date. It was hypothesized that participants who received the voucher would …

Migration, Multilingualism And Adaptation: Language As Social Capital In A Present-Day Mexican Ethnic Enclave In The U.S., Citlali Ochoa

College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences Theses and Dissertations

As the Spanish language continues to thrive in the U.S., so do the linguistic needs of immigrants. This study investigates, from a sociolinguistic perspective, the Spanish language within a Mexican immigrant enclave in Chicago, Illinois. Language use was investigated within four business and translators there in. It aims to uncover valuable insight into the understanding of the specific linguistic use of the businesses within this enclave and how it may, or may not, be contributing to the language maintenance and language shifts of the Spanish language in the U.S. The study also examines the effects of globalization and immigration policies …
