Teaching The Critical Role Of Designers In The Data Society: The Densitydesign Approach, Michele Mauri, Gabriele Colombo, María De Los Ángeles Briones, Paolo Ciuccarelli Jul 2019

Teaching The Critical Role Of Designers In The Data Society: The Densitydesign Approach, Michele Mauri, Gabriele Colombo, María De Los Ángeles Briones, Paolo Ciuccarelli

Learn X Design Conference Series

In the modern 'data society', designers play a key role in the creation of artefacts that mediate our access to data and information. These artefacts include data visualisations and interfaces. Within this context, there is a growing risk of design educators training professionals who are indifferent to, or unaware of, the political power of the devices they contribute to creating. In this paper, we draw on our experiences in the DensityDesign course to identify and formalise a didactical approach providing students with opportunities to critically reflect on their work while gaining the technical skills they need as information designers. The …

Translational Aspects Of Basic Design Exercises, Sarah Klein, Michael Renner Jul 2019

Translational Aspects Of Basic Design Exercises, Sarah Klein, Michael Renner

Learn X Design Conference Series

Among other things, translation is defined as “carrying something across”. With this interpretation, derived from the etymological root of the term, translation is not exclusively bound to the linguistic context. Therefore, a comparison between aspects of translation theory and the transfer of meaning in basic design exercises can be justified. Understanding linguistic translation as an act of cultural negotiation, raises the question to what extent basic design exercises reach across cultural constraints in transferring experience between design teachers and students. With other words: are basic design exercises transferring universal design principles or are they culturally determined the way language is? …

Upside Down: A “Flipped” Design Thinking Course, Can Güvenir, Sevi Merter, H. Hümanur Bağlı

Learn X Design Conference Series

In constructivist learning, learners are responsible of their own learning process in order to acquire certain professional and personal skills. Constructivist learning methods based on prior knowledge of the learner and learning objects (LOs) of the constructivist approach are the conductor and activator of learners’ insider knowledge. In such a learning approach, the planning of effective learning needs to be questioned and restructured. The use of LOs in learning planning is of great importance in encouraging learners to be self-learners. This paper presents a case study conducted in an interdisciplinary Design Thinking course conducted with 16 students, 1 instructor, and …

Fighting Over Meaning: Occupy Wall Street In American Mass Media And Occupiers’ Media, Muhammad Beni Saputra Jul 2019

Fighting Over Meaning: Occupy Wall Street In American Mass Media And Occupiers’ Media, Muhammad Beni Saputra

JURNAL KOMUNIKASI INDONESIA

In late 2011, Occupy Wall Street (OWS) grabbed the attention of American mass media. Media coverage on the anti-capitalist movement was mixed, some was positive and the majority was negative. Using Robert Entman’s framing theory, this paper provides a framing analysis of the OWS movement from mass media and occupiers’ media. Content analysis of news articles published by three different media platforms demonstrates that media framing of the OWS by both mass and occupiers’ media differs in terms of reporting and news focus. The difference results from the ideological streams of the three media in connection with respective political and …

Visual Artifacts As A Mediating Factor In Collaborative Museum Design, Jacquelyn Claire Johnson Jul 2019

Visual Artifacts As A Mediating Factor In Collaborative Museum Design, Jacquelyn Claire Johnson

Theses and Dissertations

The process of museum exhibit design includes a variety of activities, including collaboration on teams, consulting learning theories, following process models, brainstorming, performing evaluations, and using visuals. Although some articles mention these topics, very few provide specific details about these practices. This dissertation, which includes three articles, explores how design and visual communication occur in exhibit design. The first article examines how exhibit design teams function. The second article describes how they use visual representations to engage team members in ideation and concept development as they planned for new exhibits. This is based on the assumption that designers need to …

The Impact Of Framing On Acceptance Of Cultured Meat, Christopher Bryant, Courtney Dillard Jul 2019

The Impact Of Framing On Acceptance Of Cultured Meat, Christopher Bryant, Courtney Dillard

University Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations

Cultured meat can be produced from growing animal cells in-vitro rather than as part of a living animal. This technology has the potential to address several of the major ethical, environmental, and public health concerns associated with conventional meat production. However, research has highlighted some consumer uncertainty regarding the concept. Although several studies have examined the media coverage of this new food technology, research linking different frames to differences in consumer attitudes is lacking. In an experimental study, we expose U.S. adults (n = 480) to one of three different frames on cultured meat: “societal benefits,” “high tech,” and “same …

How Can The History Museums Be Engaging For Generation Z? -A Mobile App Which Can Collect Historical Stories From History Museums, Yumeng Yang Jun 2019

How Can The History Museums Be Engaging For Generation Z? -A Mobile App Which Can Collect Historical Stories From History Museums, Yumeng Yang

Theses - ALL

The museum is a cultural place for people to broaden their horizons and it is also an essential environment for informal learning. However, due to our fast-paced lifestyle and diverse forms of entertainment, needs are increasingly varied, and museums face many challenges. Many people, especially young people like Generation Z (a group of people who were born between the mid-1990s to the mid-2000s), are not interested in static exhibitions with tedious and wordy interpretations. Therefore, building the connection between Generation Z and making history museums more engaging is crucial. The goal of my project is to identify the engaging elements …

An Exploration Of Microaggression Awareness In Real-Time Conversations And Long-Term Tracking And Learning System, Feifei Guo Jun 2019

An Exploration Of Microaggression Awareness In Real-Time Conversations And Long-Term Tracking And Learning System, Feifei Guo

Theses

Microaggression is a comment or action that subtly and often unconsciously or unintentionally expresses a prejudiced attitude toward a member of a marginalized group. Microaggressions are often subtle and ambiguous, it's often hard to know if you're committing one or if you're on the receiving end. The recipients of microaggressions always feel a sense of powerlessness and invisibility, while the aggressors are often unaware of the harm they’ve brought. The impact of microaggressions always negatively affects both mental and physical health of recipients and results in persistent health problems.

My goal of the thesis is to make the invisible visible. …

Legal Walls PDX charts a path toward a more inclusive atmosphere for street art, and specifically graffiti, in Portland by planning a legal graffiti wall for public expression in the Central Eastside Industrial District. This plan proposes legal routes forward, as well as recommendations for implementing, designing, and stewarding the wall. These recommendations are informed by stakeholder outreach, best practices in other cities, and key advisory interviews. The complementary zine presents the idea of a free wall through storytelling and provides an approachable version of the plan for a wider public audience.

The companion zine is available below in the …

Serotonin And Motherhood: From Molecules To Mood, Jodi L. Pawluski, Ming Li, Joseph S. Lonstein Jun 2019

Serotonin And Motherhood: From Molecules To Mood, Jodi L. Pawluski, Ming Li, Joseph S. Lonstein

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Emerging research points to a valuable role of the monoamine neurotransmitter, serotonin, in the display of maternal behaviors and reproduction-associated plasticity in the maternal brain. Serotonin is also implicated in the pathophysiology of numerous affective disorders and likely plays an important role in the pathophysiology of maternal mental illness. Therefore, the main goals of this review are to detail: 1) how the serotonin system of the female brain changes across pregnancy and postpartum; 2) the role of the central serotonergic system in maternal caregiving and maternal aggression; and 3) how the serotonin system and selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor medications (SSRIs) …

Taking Care Of Plastic: Discursive Jewellery And Anthropogenic Debris, Synne Skjulstad Jun 2019

Taking Care Of Plastic: Discursive Jewellery And Anthropogenic Debris, Synne Skjulstad

Nordes Conference Series

Tons of plastic waste pile up in our oceans by the minute. This paper discusses a jewellery design project where anthropogenic debris takes centre stage. The project investigates how marine plastic trash literally may be turned into treasures through approaches that transverse design, craft and communication design. The main design material are plastic pieces selected from the shores of Norwegian fiords. Each piece of plastic selected for jewellery is treated as precious. Care is thus a concept that frames this jewellery design project as it both connects to the micro and macro perspectives on plastic. The jewellery is relating aesthetic …

In particular, this exploratory study aimed to identify persistent errors, lingering misconceptions, and challenges engineering students faced when they attempted to apply their knowledge and skills in new contexts. The 12 participants were drawn from engineering courses in which students were required to compose technical memoranda in response to requests for information from supervisors or clients. This integrated approach addresses content and communication in the same course. The study included a longitudinal analysis of four technical memoranda written across two …

The Educational Experience Of Students Who Are Deaf And Hard Of Hearing In Kentucky, Emory Bell Jun 2019

The Educational Experience Of Students Who Are Deaf And Hard Of Hearing In Kentucky, Emory Bell

Kentucky Journal of Undergraduate Scholarship

Children who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing (DHH) require much specialized instruction in order to successfully learn in school. Through my course of studies in the Education of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing program at Eastern Kentucky University, I was made aware that there is a shortage of teachers of the deaf in Kentucky, and that as a result many children who are DHH are being taught by teachers without specialized DHH certification. This led to me to wonder just what the educational experience of a child who is DHH in the state of Kentucky looked like. Through …

In the market, there are not many options or tools for people that once could speak. However, due to an accident or stroke, not only lost their voices and even some of their movements, but also sign language is not an option either. The issue is that whichever communication alternative that is available is either too expensive to use or too complicated for their actual situation such as google voice, notepads, general writing tools, etc. as each of them requires a little bit of work to manage.

Therefore we intended to ease speech-impaired people’s lives by designing and developing an …

Textual And Visual Representation Of Hijab In Internet Memes And Gifs, Omneya M. Nagib Ibrahim Jun 2019

Textual And Visual Representation Of Hijab In Internet Memes And Gifs, Omneya M. Nagib Ibrahim

Theses and Dissertations

This study provides a preliminary report of veil/hijab representation in the modern social media tools of communication; internet memes and GIFs. It bridges a gap in visual communication research by conducting an integrative -textual and visual- framing analysis of 400 memes and GIFs that used the hashtag #Hijab, to unravel the frames and stereotypes of veiled women in such online visuals. Hijabi Muslim women have been visually represented in media in overgeneralized stereotyped ways, being shown as either oppressed and subservient to others with no individual opinions, or as liberated progressives who resist western hegemony (Khan & Zahra, 2015). The …

On Social Justice, Diversity, And Development: The Asian Context, Manuel B. Dy Jr. May 2019

On Social Justice, Diversity, And Development: The Asian Context, Manuel B. Dy Jr.

Social Transformations Journal of the Global South

Introducing the main articles in this issue of Social Transformations, the overarching theme of social justice is explored in tandem with Amartya Sen’s concept of development as freedom. The main articles provide different ways of understanding social justice as economic justice, as based on human rights, and that which thrives on democracy. As Dr. Eduardo Araral presents in “The Asian Dilemma,” social justice in Asia continues to be an issue to this day precisely because the same drivers of progress are also the impetus of issues that plague Asian societies. Justin Joseph G. Badion tackles the global food crisis and …
