Comparison Of Telemedicine To Traditional Face-To-Face Care For Children With Special Health Care Needs: Analysis Of Cost, Caring, And Family-Centered Care, Mary A. Hooshmand
Comparison Of Telemedicine To Traditional Face-To-Face Care For Children With Special Health Care Needs: Analysis Of Cost, Caring, And Family-Centered Care, Mary A. Hooshmand
Dissertations
It is estimated that one out of every five household with children in the United States includes a Child with Special Health Care Needs (CSHCN). Families of CSHCN face many challenges including financial burdens beyond that of other families and difficulty accessing much needed pediatric specialty care. Telemedicine provides a potential solution or, at the least, an alternative to the traditional system of care, for health care providers and communities to address access and financial concerns of families of CSHCN. A quasi-experimental research design was used in this study to examine the differences in cost, caring, and family-centered care in …
Aesthetics Of Food: The Role Of Visual Framing Strategies For Influence Building On Instagram, Shuhan Yang
Aesthetics Of Food: The Role Of Visual Framing Strategies For Influence Building On Instagram, Shuhan Yang
Theses
This thesis employs quantitative content analysis to investigate how social media influencers use aesthetic image design to engage followers. The study investigates the ten most-followed food influencers on Instagram in the United States. The study looks at the effectiveness of visual framing strategies, focusing on the images (N = 120) of influencers which have received more than 10,000 likes in 2017. Results show that food influencers prefer to post images about cooked food, without any decorations, using high contrast colors and close-up shots. Raw food images were found to be associated with cluttered composition and far away shoots, whereas cooked …

Uncovering Digital Literacy And Supporting The Implicit: A Case Study Of Library-Faculty Collaboration, Blair Kelly
Uncovering Digital Literacy And Supporting The Implicit: A Case Study Of Library-Faculty Collaboration, Blair Kelly
Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences
Digital literacy is increasingly seen as an important skill for 21st century university students. Alongside this, notions of ‘digital natives’ who intuitively or implicitly understand digital literacy persist, despite evidence to the contrary.
In order to better understand how digital literacy is expressed in course curriculum, and therefore provide more effective support to students, Deakin University Library worked with academic staff in the University’s School of Medicine to uncover where digital literacy was assessed across the span of a Master of Optometry degree. This process also revealed to what extent the underpinning digital literacy skills and knowledge needed to …
Curo — Patient Home Recovery Guide For Stressfree And Better Recovery After Hospitalization, Khushboo Rajesh Agarwal
Curo — Patient Home Recovery Guide For Stressfree And Better Recovery After Hospitalization, Khushboo Rajesh Agarwal
Theses
The transition from in-hospital illness management to self-management exposes patients to many risks such as inadequate training before leaving the hospital and medication errors which can lead to patient re-hospitalization. Effective care after discharge can improve patients’ health, reduce chances of re-hospitalization and decrease healthcare costs.
A patient leaves the hospital with a complex and verbose discharge summary. Once home they rely on this discharge summary to guide their recovery. Most of the printed summaries use medical jargon that informs the clinicians more than the patients. To help patients understand better, nurses go through the discharge papers with the patient …
Lore: A World Beyond Pages, Anushka Nalluri
Lore: A World Beyond Pages, Anushka Nalluri
Theses
All around us are hundreds of people with years of accumulated knowledge and unique life stories. I call these people ‘Human books’. At the same time, there are people around us who want to hear the stories from these human books and glean the knowledge from their life experiences. When people realize this, they will naturally develop an urge to connect with the others and learn more from them. Unfortunately, in our increasingly impersonal and disconnected culture, we do not have a method to discover and connect with those who are interested in sharing their knowledge. I’m proposing a system …
From Mourning To Monuments: How American Society Memorialized The Dead After 1945, Eugenia M. Wolovich
From Mourning To Monuments: How American Society Memorialized The Dead After 1945, Eugenia M. Wolovich
Theses and Dissertations
The following four memorials — the World War II Memorial in The Fens in Boston, the Brooklyn War Memorial in Cadman Plaza Park, the Pennsylvania Railroad World War II Memorial in the 30th Street Station, and the East Coast War Memorial in Battery Park — suggest that mid-twentieth century commemorative architecture possessed defining characteristics that differentiated them from monuments of the previous era and from each other. These unique qualities make it difficult to define this architectural period in a unified way because multiple forms of memorials arose in the wake of World War II.
The Eye Of The Larval Firefly Photuris: A Structural And Functional Description, Fred Murphy
The Eye Of The Larval Firefly Photuris: A Structural And Functional Description, Fred Murphy
Doctoral Dissertations
Fireflies are bioluminescent beetles and members of the holometabolous clade. As holometabola, fireflies interact with their environment during two stages: larva and adult. I studied firefly stemmata, Photuris genus, with the aim of understanding their ecological utility by identifying structural and functional features of the eye. As a first step toward this goal, I used microscopy to characterize the architecture of firefly stemmata. I concluded that Photuris eyes were a type of fusion-stemmata, evidenced by a bi-lobed organization. Each eye contained 88 photoreceptors that contributed dense interlocking-microvilli forming a fused-rhabdom. In the next section, I tested whether stemmata regulated photo-dependent …
Giving Four-Year-Old Children A "Voice" Within The Comprehensive Evaluation Of Quality Teaching Practices, Mistie M. Perry
Giving Four-Year-Old Children A "Voice" Within The Comprehensive Evaluation Of Quality Teaching Practices, Mistie M. Perry
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Educational research has largely focused on the correlation between governmental entities and classroom pedagogy as policymakers develop more comprehensive evaluation systems that raise the expectations of teacher quality. However, some researchers in the field of early childhood suggest the measurement of teacher quality is largely a “mismatch between informant-based, retroactive methods” (Downer, Booren, Lima, Luckner, & Pianta, 2010, p. 5) as developmentally appropriate measurements of early childhood quality that include the perceptions of the children are few. To examine the potential for researchers to consider the inclusion of children’s perceptions within evaluation systems, this study examines the following area of …
Design Your Career - Design Your Life, Joshua R. Beal
Design Your Career - Design Your Life, Joshua R. Beal
Masters Theses
This research investigates the current plague of unemployment and underemployment that nearly half of qualified individuals in the field of Visual Communications are met with after graduation. Students who major in this field dedicate a tremendous amount of time, money, and energy toward developing a broad skillset that resolves critical matters of communication through visual solutions. Research has demonstrated that despite conditions that are subject to ongoing change of economy, industry, and marketplace there are contributing factors that must be addressed to overcome un/underemployment regardless of circumstances. These include an underdeveloped network of professional contacts, deficiency in recognizing or responding …
Exploring Eye Tracking Data On Source Code Via Dual Space Analysis, Li Zhang
Exploring Eye Tracking Data On Source Code Via Dual Space Analysis, Li Zhang
School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Eye tracking is a frequently used technique to collect data capturing users' strategies and behaviors in processing information. Understanding how programmers navigate through a large number of classes and methods to find bugs is important to educators and practitioners in software engineering. However, the eye tracking data collected on realistic codebases is massive compared to traditional eye tracking data on one static page. The same content may appear in different areas on the screen with users scrolling in an Integrated Development Environment (IDE). Hierarchically structured content and fluid method position compose the two major challenges for visualization. We present a …

Minos: Unsupervised Netflow-Based Detection Of Infected And Attacked Hosts, And Attack Time In Large Networks, Mousume Bhowmick
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
Monitoring large-scale networks for malicious activities is increasingly challenging: the amount and heterogeneity of traffic hinder the manual definition of IDS signatures and deep packet inspection. In this thesis, we propose MINOS, a novel fully unsupervised approach that generates an anomaly score for each host allowing us to classify with high accuracy each host as either infected (generating malicious activities), attacked (under attack), or clean (without any infection). The generated score of each hour is able to detect the time frame of being attacked for an infected or attacked host without any prior knowledge. MINOS automatically creates a personalized traffic …

Self-Repair And Self-Cleaning Of The Lepidopteran Proboscis, Suellen Floyd Pometto
Self-Repair And Self-Cleaning Of The Lepidopteran Proboscis, Suellen Floyd Pometto
All Dissertations
The proboscis of butterflies and moths is a key innovation contributing to the high diversity of the order Lepidoptera. In addition to taking nectar from angiosperm sources, many species take up fluids from overripe or sound fruit, plant sap, animal dung, and moist soil. The proboscis is assembled after eclosion of the adult from the pupa by linking together two elongate galeae to form one tube with a single food canal. How do lepidopterans maintain the integrity and function of the proboscis while foraging from various substrates?
The research questions included whether lepidopteran species are capable of total self-repair, how …
How Virtual Reality Impacts The Landscape Architecture Design Process At Various Scales, Drew M. Hill
How Virtual Reality Impacts The Landscape Architecture Design Process At Various Scales, Drew M. Hill
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
In the field of landscape architecture, the use of virtual reality (VR) is increasing as a tool for visualization and presentation in the late stages of the design process. Many of the benefits that make VR valuable in the later stages of the design process suggest that VR may also be valuable when used in earlier stages such as analysis and concept development. However, existing research does not provide a detailed study of design within VR during those early stages. Recent advancements in technology allow the potential to bring significant changes in the way that design-related professionals collaborate and design. …
Examining The Conflict Between User Experience And Software Development In Industry, Marissa K. Wilson
Examining The Conflict Between User Experience And Software Development In Industry, Marissa K. Wilson
Theses
In this age the modern consumer expects a software product to be profusely technically functional with an elegant and intuitive user interface. To accomplish this goal, it has become necessary for software development teams and user experience teams to collaborate on software projects. These two complementary teams often come from different backgrounds, with different technical knowledge, processes, management structures, and deadlines. As these teams continue to collaborate more and more the chance of encountering a conflict also increases. In this research we examine the conflict that can occur between software development and user experience teams and the possible effects on …

Multimodality In The Digital Environments Of Deaf Education (De2), Michael E. Skyer
Multimodality In The Digital Environments Of Deaf Education (De2), Michael E. Skyer
Presentations and other scholarship
This paper contextualizes multimodality theory in digital-epistemological paradigms and analyzes their combined effects upon operations of power in deaf pedagogical practices. Deafness is unbound by geography. Deaf people constitute a heterogeneous, globalized ethnic minority who are singularly linked. Often thought to be rendered powerless by disability, deaf people generate forms of power that disrupt conventional ontology and epistemology by way of divergent adaptations of visuospatial language modalities. As creators and users, deaf people have positioned themselves at the cutting-edge of innovation by developing and repurposing digital technologies to secure insurgent power in the face of sociopolitical oppression. This paper establishes …

Toward A Theory Of Procedural Rhetorical Systems: Demonstrations Of Player Agency In Uptake Of Rules In Video Games, Sydney A. Klem
Toward A Theory Of Procedural Rhetorical Systems: Demonstrations Of Player Agency In Uptake Of Rules In Video Games, Sydney A. Klem
Theses and Dissertations
This paper expands Ian Bogost’s (2007) procedural rhetoric by broadening the rhetorical view of games to encompass the arguments that they make not just about the material, but about themselves. The theory of procedural rhetorical systems (PRSes) views game systems as arguing toward how players should be following their rules, and like in any form of rhetoric, players possess agency in how they take up these arguments and how closely they follow rules. To demonstrate this, this paper analyzes a specific game, the 1996 platformer Super Mario 64, alongside various digital artifacts demonstrating how players have taken it up, including …

Communication Design: Design Pioneers
Do not call her a graphic designer. Call her a thinker. April Greiman continues to challenge the mean-ing of artist and designer through her experimental use of technology. Through her work, Greiman continues to question the line between art and design. Where does fine art end and design begin? What role does technol-ogy play with art and design? Greiman’s experiences throughout her childhood, education, and philosophical readings influenced her work as an artist and designer. Credited with being an early adopter of designers using Macintosh computer and innovator of the “New Wave” aesthetic in the 1980’s, April Greiman continues to …
Inter-Semiotic Translation In Intercultural Communication Design, Shaima B.A Elbardawil
Inter-Semiotic Translation In Intercultural Communication Design, Shaima B.A Elbardawil
Learn X Design Conference Series
In the late nineteenth century, as new technologies, social needs and commercial opportunities emerged in industrialised societies, communication design evolved in line with them. The massive development of mass media and mass communication brought on by cultural globalisation created various levels of complexity for communication design. Understanding the different kinds of translation that take place between cultures, languages and systems will improve the comprehensiveness, quality and inclusivity of communication in multicultural contexts. This in turn demands new knowledge, competencies and skills that will allow designers to create inclusive intercultural communications to serve the current societal and cultural needs of audiences. …

The discipline of industrial design is in a continuous change due to the developments in information and production technologies. As a result of this change, the designers are expected to be equipped with diverse skills and sets of knowledge. Hence the scope of formal design education needs to be enlarged and the theoretical and methodological basis of it needs to be reconstructed according to this new scope. This enlarged scope is embedded to the curriculum on theoretical and practical aspects. On the account of basic design, which is regarded to be the foundation course of industrial design education, this newly …

It is conceivable that capitalism and the new market economy as it currently operates is unsustainable despite the bullish opinions of businessmen and entrepreneurs. There are many obvious concerns surrounding an economy without money the most basic of which is the accounting of productivity. However, if we are seriously engaged in this thought experiment we must also consider two operations of the current system that seem to be most detrimental to societal and more recently, political constructs which are the accumulation, and transferability of money. Moderate restrictions have been placed on both operations but considering the involvement of business in …
