Post-Gated Era: Towards Integrated Urban Communities In China, Xiaojing Lin
Post-Gated Era: Towards Integrated Urban Communities In China, Xiaojing Lin
Theses
Gated communities, which typically refer to residential compounds that have strict boundaries with entrances guarded by securities and other technology appliances for surveillance, are the most common developments in Chinese cities over the past few decades. These enclosures of isolated city blocks have caused heated discussion since The CPC (Central Committee and State Council) published a guildline in 2016 to prohibit the construction of Gated communities in Chinese cities. For unique historical and social-cultural reasons, “Gated” has been deeply embedded in Chinese traditional dwelling ideology for a long time, and it is still widely accepted by the vast majority as …

Incorporating Community Solar At The University Of Richmond To Reach Sustainability Goals, Maribel Sabino
Geography and the Environment Capstone Projects
An analysis of the scale pertaining to sustainability efforts by the University of Richmond concerning the solar farm in Spotsylvania and alternative solar options is imperative to understanding and encouraging sustainability at the University of Richmond. Solar energy as a renewable energy has high potential to help institutions of higher education reach sustainability goals. Considering solar power at various scales will help understand if solar is a viable option to reach these goals. This project examines community solar under a lens of sustainability as a potential contender to meeting the sustainability and carbon neutrality goals of the University of Richmond. …

What gaps exist in the justice system that result in a need for services provided by community economic development attorneys? What is the evidence that those gaps actually exist? How do we know that community economic development practitioners fill those gaps, and in what way? These are merely a few of the questions addressed in this collection. At the Association of American Law Schools (AALS) annual meeting in San Diego in January 2018, legal scholars gathered to discuss this evolution as part of the discussion group, “Community Economic Development Is Access to Justice.” The goal of the discussion group was …
Making Space: Community Writing And Performance Toward The Production Of Location, Sarah Moon
Making Space: Community Writing And Performance Toward The Production Of Location, Sarah Moon
Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation considers how the performance of locally-situated writing can contribute to existing community development efforts in towns and cities and how performance-oriented projects in composition courses can build community that, in turn, supports deeper learning and preparation for citizenship. In the community context, this project considers how we make space in place against the forces of colonization that have largely foreclosed the opportunity for what I call ground-motion, the activity of people and groups of people in the places where they live. The ultimate goal of this space-making is the production of locality, a sense of place that …

Understanding Community: Microwear Analysis Of Blades At The Mound House Site, Silas Levi Chapman
Understanding Community: Microwear Analysis Of Blades At The Mound House Site, Silas Levi Chapman
Theses and Dissertations
Understanding Middle Woodland period sites has been of considerable interest for North American archaeologists since early on in the discipline. Various Middle Woodland period (50 BCE-400CE) cultures participated in shared ideas and behaviors, such as constructing mounds and earthworks and importing exotic materials to make objects for ceremony and for interring with the dead. These shared behaviors and ideas are termed by archaeologists as “Hopewell”. The Mound House site is a floodplain mound group thought to have served as a “ritual aggregation center”, a place for the dispersed Middle Woodland communities to congregate at certain times of year to reinforce …
The Urban Development Of Bronson Circle, Matthew Moulton
The Urban Development Of Bronson Circle, Matthew Moulton
Honors Theses
Many suburban streets, and specifically Bronson Circle, in the city of Kalamazoo are in poor condition and in need of repair. Along with a new pavement design and additional drainage considerations, a complete redesign of the street’s cross-section with the concept of a “Complete Street” was created. A redesign of the site, traffic, pavement, drainage, and lighting were completed to lessen the street’s impact on the environment and make it more user friendly for all modes of transportation. This complete street design can be adjusted for terrain and used for any comparable urban street.
Included in this report is an …

In order to understand the impact of individual communities on global sustainability, we need a community sustainability assessment system (CSAS). While many sustainability assessment systems exist, they prove inadequate to the task. This article presents the results of a systematic review of the literature on existing sustainability assessment systems; offers a definition of a sustainable community; provides a multi-scale, systems approach to thinking about community; and makes recommendations from the field of performance measurement for the construction of a CSAS.

Through conversations in the community, partnerships can form and bring together diverse people to enhance the discovery of materials in our own backyards. When we learned of a community-based initiative by our local history consortium, we saw it as an opportunity to join in and provide leadership in preserving, sustaining, and bringing greater awareness to the history collections in our region. During this session you will learn how we used tools we have, such as Digital Commons, LibGuides and Tableau, to benefit the many valuable organizations and resources in our community that often go undiscovered.

Information about the LGBTQIA population is difficult to collect because of the sensitive nature of the topic of sexual preference and gender identity. This paper examines our weeding project and collection development efforts to provide health care information for the LGBTQIA community at a Midwestern metropolitan university. The findings conclude that our collection was not providing sufficient, up-to-date health information for the personal and professional information needs of our patrons in the R-RZ Library of Congress range. The weeding process, strategies for working with department faculty, and the implications for an intersectional medical collection are discussed.

Sustainable Messaging In Film: A Survey Of A College Community, Chelsea Faught
Sustainable Messaging In Film: A Survey Of A College Community, Chelsea Faught
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
The concept of sustainability encompasses environmental, social, and economic issues. A sustainable approach encourages a balanced earth in both well-being and resource conservation for the sake of future generations. Unfortunately, awareness of and participation in various dimension of sustainability are currently inadequate given the current projections of the negative impact of climate change to humanity. Therefore, this project was designed to research if there was a relationship between viewing sustainably themed films and becoming more sustainably-conscious as a way to explore a potential avenue for mental and behavioral change. Furthermore, this project examines audience perception of sustainable messaging and content …

My Photo, My Voice: Reducing Self-Stigma Of Felons & Drug Addicts Through The Use Of Storytelling And Photographs, Jordan Ferrick
Capstone Collection
In the United States, when we talk about addiction and incarceration, what are the stories that are usually told and from whose perspective? This project assembled a multi-method approach incorporating photovoice and a semi-participatory action research (PAR) methodology to establish community connections and facilitate healing through personal storytelling and listening. Working with Phoenix Rise House in Bellows Falls, VT, a transitional house for (12) men who are formerly incarcerated and/or recovering addicts, this research addresses the question: How can internalized stigma, of felons and addicts, be reduced with photo storytelling? Underpinning the semi-PAR methodological approach is a theoretical framework incorporating …

Pathways To A Sustainable Community Health Worker Program In A Rural Native American Community, Hannah R. Duby
Pathways To A Sustainable Community Health Worker Program In A Rural Native American Community, Hannah R. Duby
Doctoral Projects
Introduction: American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) people have some of the greatest health disparities of any other citizen group in the U.S. (National Indian Health Board [NIHB], 2018). As liaisons between community members and health services, community health workers (CHWs) play an important role in reducing disparities in AI/AN communities (Indian Health Service [IHS], 2018). CHWs in the organization of interest are not being used to their full potential as the documentation of their care is not accessible to the primary care providers (PCPs) for care coordination and the program is threatened by issues related to sustainability.

Becoming A Fan: Reinventing, Repurposing, And Resisting In First-Year Composition, Keshia Mcclantoc
Department of English: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
This thesis explores the cultural and pedagogical potential of the fanfiction community. The practices of recursive peer feedback, reinvention as invention, and production of subversive narratives via repurposing posits the fanfiction community a democratic space where a myriad of identities can react to, interact with, and disseminate information in a productive learning community. During a time when socio-political interactions are so intense, it is necessary that teachers of composition and rhetoric pay attention to learning communities where democratic deliberation is promoted through the production and sharing of writing. Ultimately, this thesis argues that reinvention and repurposing within the fanfiction community …

The Living Archive In The Anthropocene, Nora Almeida, Jen Hoyer
Publications and Research
This paper presents the concept of the living archive as a system which reflects how social behavior and cultural production are part of the Anthropocene. The authors explore how dominant narratives of both the Anthropocene and the archive work to consolidate power and maintain cultural and disciplinary divisions. The authors refute conceptions of the Anthropocene as a purely biophysical phenomenon that is alienated from cultural practice and of the archive as a comprehensive and nostalgic space. They then introduce the living archive as an alternative representational, creative, and reactive space and illustrate how the living archive can intervene in ecological …
The Creation Of A Virginia Coastal Resilience Development Authority: An Inventory Of State Coastal Resilience Authorities And Funding Mechanisms To Help Guide Virginia, Kristi Gennette

Camaraderie, Collaboration, And Capacity Building: A Qualitative Examination Of School Social Workers In A Year Long Professional Learning Community, Andrew Brake, Michael S. Kelly
The Qualitative Report
Professional learning communities (PLCs) have become commonplace in K-12 schools for helping teachers collaborate to build their professional capacities and address school-based problems. However, rigorous research on the key components, mechanisms, and impact of PLCs has been limited overall, with virtually no research conducted on PLCs with school social workers (SSW). This article examines the first-year experiences of school mental health professionals (SMHP) in a two-year PLC made up largely of SSW from an array of schools and districts throughout metropolitan Chicago. Drawing on qualitative data gathered from three rounds of in-depth interviews with participants during the first year of …
