Social Networks, Identity, Health, And Quality Of Life Among Older Gay And Lesbian Individuals In Rural Environments, Marc Aaron Guest

Theses and Dissertations--Gerontology

The goal of this dissertation was to explore aging lesbian and gay individuals living in rural communities, in terms of their social networks and the relationships between these networks, identity, health, and quality of life. Guiding the study were three overarching questions. Using a multi-method design, the research was grounded within a socio-ecological context and focused on how structural systems create pathways for health and are affected by social position (intersectionality). Participants (n=25) were recruited from Kentucky (n=20), West Virginia (n=3), and Tennessee (n=2). Thirteen participants self-identified as gay and twelve as lesbian. Findings highlight the complexity of the aging …

Effect Of Marital Status On Survival In Parathyroid Cancer Patients In The Usa – A Seer Database Study, Joseph Xavier Jeyanth Jenkins Fernandez

Public Health Theses

INTRODUCTION: To evaluate the influence of marital status on the survival outcomes of patients diagnosed with parathyroid cancer.

MATERIALS and METHODS: The Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database was used to identify patients diagnosed with parathyroid cancer between 1975 and 2016. Survival analysis was performed using Kaplan-Meier method and multivariate Cox regression analysis, to evaluate the association between marital status and parathyroid cancer survival, controlling for potential confounders. Overall mortality and parathyroid cancer-specific mortality rates were calculated for 5-year and 10-year follow-up periods.

RESULTS: The final cohort from SEER consisted of 611 patients. 373 (61.05%) were married and 238 …

“Throwing Drops Of Water At A Wildfire”: Patient And Provider Strategies For Navigating Housing Instability And Type 2 Diabetes, Marlene Edelstein Jan 2019

“Throwing Drops Of Water At A Wildfire”: Patient And Provider Strategies For Navigating Housing Instability And Type 2 Diabetes, Marlene Edelstein

Public Health Theses

Type 2 diabetes and housing access are growing independent and intersecting crises in the United States, and unstable housing is associated with poor health outcomes for people with type 2 diabetes. A growing body of evidence points to the challenges of adhering to diabetes management without access to stable housing, and that provider behavior is impacted when their patients face housing instability. In this qualitative study, we investigate the ways that primary care providers and people with type 2 diabetes strategically navigate the challenges posed by homelessness and unstable housing. Semi-structured interviews from two qualitative studies were analyzed. The first …

Financial Aid Packaging At Community Colleges: Which Types Of Awards Packages Increase Student Persistence?, Maria Luna-Torres, Lyle Mckinney, Andrea Backscheider Burridge, Catherine Horn, Sara J. Jones

Journal of Student Financial Aid

Increasing college costs, coupled with decreasing financial aid has raised public concerns over the affordability of higher education. For the past four decades, the nation has seen the cost of tuition rise at levels that exceed inflation, and financial assistance rates that have not kept pace with that growth. Studies suggest that these financial resources play a role in influencing college attendance decisions and persistence for low-income students. This study examines the characteristics of zero-EFC students as compared to non-zero EFC students and determines the extent to which a gift-aid only, and gift-aid plus loans awards package affects the likelihood …

Celebrating Student Scholarship With An Undergraduate Research Prize, Kevin Ross, Carolyn Radcliff, Talia Cain

Library Books and Book Chapters

"The Leatherby Libraries at Chapman University started its research prize contest for undergraduate students in 2007. Having reached the tenth anniversary of the contest, we are well positioned to reflect on how the contest has changed in concert with new ways of inquiry and information creation and on its role in supporting and honoring student research. A decade of experience has taught us how to diversify the contest and reflect collectively on its merits. In this chapter, we present a case study of how the Kevin and Tam Ross Undergraduate Research Prize (URP) recognizes and honors student scholarship. We explain …

The findings revealed that these international students go through an identity journey, where they reflect on their past …

Frontierwhorlroamer: Eugene Jolas’S Cosmopoetics, Ania Spyra Jan 2019

Frontierwhorlroamer: Eugene Jolas’S Cosmopoetics, Ania Spyra

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

The article analyzes Eugene Jolas’ two multilingual poems “Frontier-Poem” (1935) and “America Mystica” (1937) in the transnational context of European Union and hemispheric conceptualizations of the Americas to show how Jolas worked towards a new paradigm and terminology to name the transnational identities created through mass migrations and unstable boundaries of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. With poetic sensibility forged at the confluence of the utilitarian jargon of journalism and the irrepressible plurality of the collective unconscious, Jolas’s cosmopoetics offered the universal language of Atlantica, which, paradoxically, was to be both all-inclusive (consisting of essences of all idioms …

Mapping Development In Cameroon: Challenging Dominant Narratives, Hannah Skutt Jan 2019

Mapping Development In Cameroon: Challenging Dominant Narratives, Hannah Skutt

Scripps Senior Theses

In this thesis I reflect upon a digital mapping project I did in the rural agricultural villages of Bangoua and Batoufam in the Grassfields region of Cameroon. This thesis considers digital mapping as a possible strategy for addressing a current dichotomy in these villages. On the one hand community members express concern over observed shifts in local weather patterns, which they attribute to climate change, and on the other hand community members express desperation for “development.” Of over 130 mapped points, I use this thesis to look at three case studies of community centered development initiatives that address both development …

Ok, Google, Will Artificial Intelligence Replace Human Lawyering?, Melissa Love Koenig, Julie A. Oseid, Amy Vorenberg Jan 2019

Ok, Google, Will Artificial Intelligence Replace Human Lawyering?, Melissa Love Koenig, Julie A. Oseid, Amy Vorenberg

Marquette Law Review

Will Artificial Intelligence (AI) replace human lawyering? The answer is

no. Despite worries that AI is getting so sophisticated that it could take over

the profession, there is little cause for concern. Indeed, the surge of AI in the

legal field has crystalized the real essence of effective lawyering. The lawyer’s

craft goes beyond what AI can do because we listen with empathy to clients’

stories, strategize to find the story that might not be obvious, thoughtfully use

our imagination and judgment to decide which story will appeal to an audience,

and creatively tell those winning stories.

This Article reviews …

Traffic Stop Federalism: Protecting North Carolina Black Drivers From The United States Supreme Court, Anthony J. Ghiotto Jan 2019

Traffic Stop Federalism: Protecting North Carolina Black Drivers From The United States Supreme Court, Anthony J. Ghiotto

University of Baltimore Law Review

Black drivers face a different constitutional reality than whites the moment they step behind the wheel in North Carolina. Although black drivers represent only about twenty-two percent of the North Carolina population, thirty-two percent of all traffic stops involve black drivers. This racial disparity may raise suspicion of either implicit or explicit racial profiling on the part of police departments, but the reality is that North Carolina law does not expressly prohibit racial profiling. Instead, so long as the police officers have an objective basis to stop a driver—and they may choose from any of the hundreds of misdemeanor traffic …

Background and Purpose: Disabled individuals, their families, and communities are more likely to live in poverty than their non-disabled counterparts. The Social Security Administration (SSA) is social safety net that provides cash assistance programs through social insurance (Social Security Disability Insurance, or SSDI) and public assistance (Supplemental Security Income, or SSI) programs to people who meet eligibility criteria. The SSA offers work incentive programs that encourage enrolled disabled people to return to the workforce yet has found that these programs are infrequently utilized. This research aims to fill both knowledge and methodological gaps in the literature on why those support …

Clarifying The Identity Of Human Services Through A Content Analysis Of Programmatic Accreditation, Nicola A. Meade, Shuntay Z. Tarver, Mark C. Rehfuss

Counseling & Human Services Faculty Publications

Throughout the United States, accrediting bodies serve as voluntary self-regulating entities designed to ensure accountability and quality assurance at the institutions that seek accreditation. To examine the impact of accreditation on the field of human services, a mixed-method content analysis was utilized. The 50 human services programs accredited by the Council for Standards on Human Services Education (CSHSE) as of July of 2018 were examined. Researchers also employed a triangulated approach to understand these programs through an analysis of Carnegie Classifications, regional accreditation agencies, and institutions programmatic websites. Results offer insight into how the CSHSE influences the professional identity of …

A Self Study Of My Leadership As Principal To Improve Student Achievement In Literacy In The Middle Grades, Latrese Tonya Mathis Jan 2019

A Self Study Of My Leadership As Principal To Improve Student Achievement In Literacy In The Middle Grades, Latrese Tonya Mathis

Dissertations

This self-study examined my leadership practices as a principal and researcher. Herr and Anderson (2005) define self-study as "a focus on one's own personal and professional self." Through reflective analysis of my leadership practices, the Instructional Leadership and Grade Level Teams were supported with protocols and leadership methods to improve literacy instruction at middle grades. Upon reflection, concerns existed regarding inadequate and inconsistent student growth through the lens of school wide assessments. The examination of student data, root cause identification, and the development and monitoring of action items assisted to investigate my analysis of this concern. The significance of this …

All For One Or Each For Her Own: Do Polygamous Families Share And Share Alike?, Kristin Mammen Jan 2019

All For One Or Each For Her Own: Do Polygamous Families Share And Share Alike?, Kristin Mammen

Journal for the Advancement of Developing Economies

This paper examines whether the mother’s rank (whether she is a senior or junior wife) in polygamous households in Côte d’Ivoire injects favoritism that could lead to differential investment in children (based on mother’s rank), a concern that could cause an inefficient allocation of household resources. The hypothesis is that the younger is a junior wife relative to the senior wife, the greater favoritism she will receive from the husband, and the better her children will fare. This question is analyzed employing Ordinary Least Squares on a Living Standards Measurement Survey microdataset collected by the World Bank. An interesting pattern …
