Smooth: Adapting Joyce Carol Oates For Film In The Me Too Era, Thomas Ghebrezgi Jan 2019

Smooth: Adapting Joyce Carol Oates For Film In The Me Too Era, Thomas Ghebrezgi

Theses & ETDs

My role in this thesis is that of adapter/scholar. First, I examine the 1985 film Smooth Talk (dir. Joyce Chopra) based on Joyce Carol Oates’s short story “Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?” I begin by addressing the critical discourse surrounding Chopra’s film, providing a reading of Smooth Talk that directly rebuts allegations the film is either anti-feminist or imaginatively staid. I argue Smooth Talk uses allusions to the Bible, specifically to the parable of the Levite and His Concubine, to craft a critique of the patriarchal forces that structure the world of the film’s protagonist, the teenaged …

Examining Victim Blaming: An Analysis Of The Sexual Objectification Of Women In Media, Self-Objectification, And Rape Myth Acceptance, Nina Schmidt Jan 2019

Examining Victim Blaming: An Analysis Of The Sexual Objectification Of Women In Media, Self-Objectification, And Rape Myth Acceptance, Nina Schmidt

Theses & ETDs

This study examines the relationships between sexual objectification, self-objectification, rape myth acceptance, and victim blaming. Participants first completed a self-objectification and rape myth acceptance questionnaire and engaged in a short cognitive task to mitigate priming effects. They were then shown either sexualized images (experimental condition) or neutral images (control condition), read a vignette depicting a sexual assault, and answered questions to assess their victim blaming score. Contrary to previous literature, sexual objectification did not affect victim blaming. Additionally, self-objectification was not related to victim blaming, but rape myth acceptance was strongly, positively related to victim blaming such that higher rape …

Performing The Possibility Of Difference: Analyzing Race, Movement, And Performance In The Work Of Pearl Primus And Ira Aldridge, Eugenia Hayley Titterington Jan 2019

Performing The Possibility Of Difference: Analyzing Race, Movement, And Performance In The Work Of Pearl Primus And Ira Aldridge, Eugenia Hayley Titterington

Theses & ETDs

The medium of performance is a valuable means for engaging racial dialogue since its liveness draws attention to the performing body, allowing us to negotiate what social meanings culture has invested in bodies. However, attention to topics of race and racism in Western theatre has historically avoided confronting intersubjective dialogues about race in favor of objectifying otherized racial identities, most notably performances of blackness, to reaffirm White racial dominance. Black artists have historically worked to resist this by reframing the performance as a site of opposition. This study uses this point of tension to study the ways physicality in dance …

The History, Current State, And Potential Future Of Archaeological Illustration, Madison Brown Jan 2019

The History, Current State, And Potential Future Of Archaeological Illustration, Madison Brown

Theses & ETDs

Archaeological illustration, in the broadest term, is the depiction of human material culture through a visual medium. As technique advanced over time, so too did the understanding of how to best portray images in an archaeological context. The goal of this paper is to present an abridged history of the important innovations that lead up to the formation of this discipline, as well as discuss the conventions of modern practice. The term “convention” is important as the field of archaeological illustration has never truly standardized, so there is a great deal of variation that will not be fully touched upon. …

On A Necessary And Sufficient Condition For The Hamiltonicity Of Graphs, Justin Paul Tienken-Harder Jan 2019

On A Necessary And Sufficient Condition For The Hamiltonicity Of Graphs, Justin Paul Tienken-Harder

Theses & ETDs

Finding non-trivial necessary and sufficient conditions for the Hamiltonicity of graphs has been a longstanding open problem in Graph Theory. In this paper we prove a necessary and sufficient condition for a graph to be Hamiltonian. Moreover, we draw on past research of line graphs to highlight a surprising connection between the path and cyclic structure of a graph and the trails of hypergraphs. Finally, we briefly highlight some directions of future research.

Labor Of Labor: Exploring The Working Conditions Of 21st Century Midwives In The Us, Alba Lou Abrams Jan 2019

Labor Of Labor: Exploring The Working Conditions Of 21st Century Midwives In The Us, Alba Lou Abrams

Theses & ETDs

Midwifery is the oldest known version of obstetrics and has been around for thousands of years. In many parts of the world, midwifery is the number one form of childbirth care but in the United States licensed midwives attend less than 1% of births. Midwives provide natural, unmedicated birth for pregnant people and have positive effects on the childbirth process. The US has one of the highest infant mortality rates of any developed country and an increasing maternal mortality rate. These rates are due to the intervention of modernized obstetrics in hospitals and midwives strive to provide safe, alternate out-of-hospital …

Rural Politics: A Quantitative Exploration Of Rurality And Political Behavior, Jack Knox Belk Jr. Jan 2019

Rural Politics: A Quantitative Exploration Of Rurality And Political Behavior, Jack Knox Belk Jr.

Theses & ETDs

In recent years, there has been a growing focus on the differences between rural and urban individuals in the United States. This seems to have left many observers with the impression that political scientists are well informed with regard to the role of place in political affairs. The most cursory review of the literature confirms that this is absolutely not the case. While urban politics has received considerable attention over the years, no one—certainly no contemporary author—has offered a detailed investigation of rural political behavior. We attempt to fill that gap by synthesizing previous work, crafting appropriate measures, and modeling …

The Sf City Kids: Nostalgia And Boundaries Of San Francisco Youth Community Identity And Belonging In The Face Of Tech-Industry Gentrification, Rebecca Luisa Caccavo Jan 2019

The Sf City Kids: Nostalgia And Boundaries Of San Francisco Youth Community Identity And Belonging In The Face Of Tech-Industry Gentrification, Rebecca Luisa Caccavo

Theses & ETDs

The purpose of this study is to understand how local youth (ages 22 to 25) of the city of San Francisco make sense of their identities and personal history in relationship to the changing surroundings as affected by tech industry gentrification. The guiding question of this research is, how are boundaries of community identity and belonging formed through the construction of narratives of time and place, in a contested urban landscape marked by inequality? Using grounded theory, I analyze 10 in-depth interviews to answer this research question. Two major themes emerge from the data: 1) the importance of nostalgia narratives …

Critiquing Environmental Rhetoric: An Exploration Of Ecocriticism And Its Value To Activism, Tristen Johns Jan 2019

Critiquing Environmental Rhetoric: An Exploration Of Ecocriticism And Its Value To Activism, Tristen Johns

Theses & ETDs

This thesis examines the field of ecocriticism, tracing its conceptualization as a subgenre of literary critique and discussing its implications for the community of scholars and environmental activists. I explore commonly cited definitions of the field and examine ecocritics’ works. I also discuss the importance of the ecocritical approach and its value to the field of environmental study and activism. I advocate for the importance of the humanities to work in environmental studies, a perspective often missing in my experience from research related to the ecological crisis. Ecocritics do far more than contribute critiques of specific pieces of literature, but …

Pre-Existing Conditions: Christianity, Identity, Gender, And Bodily Autonomy, Alice Corinne Leavengood Jan 2019

Pre-Existing Conditions: Christianity, Identity, Gender, And Bodily Autonomy, Alice Corinne Leavengood

Theses & ETDs

This art project is a culmination of research in Medieval and Gothic Christian culture, coupled with contemporary politics and social commentary on gender, identity, sexual freedom, and reproductive rights. Through an examination of the culture wars and development of the Religious Right and rise of anti-abortion propaganda, my thesis explores political iconography as a way to reaffirm personal freedom relating to gender, identity, and reproductive rights. Stained glass windows are simulated through screen printing on Plexiglass, a new technique of my own creation. Depicting narratives concerning the oppression of queer and female-bodied people and the need for the feminist and …

"Fuck Tha Police": The Poetry And Politics Of N.W.A., Sandra Young Jan 2019

"Fuck Tha Police": The Poetry And Politics Of N.W.A., Sandra Young

English Faculty Publications

No one withdrew after syllabus day. In the semester I piloted a first-year seminar course, the “Rhetoric of Protest Songs,” on the first day of class, I introduced the topic of the class and myself. However, before I gave students the syllabi, I confessed that I knew little about music. I told them I Googled and YouTubed, and read our text to gain knowledge about protest songs. I told them the “Rhetoric of Protest Songs” was a writing class, and rhetoric means persuasion. “In this class, you’ll write academic essays about protest songs. And we’ll listen to some music.”

My …

Public/Private Distinction In Islamic Jurisprudence: Reflection On Islamic Constitutionalism, Faris F. Almalki Jan 2019

Public/Private Distinction In Islamic Jurisprudence: Reflection On Islamic Constitutionalism, Faris F. Almalki

Maurer Theses and Dissertations

The study seeks to attract scholars' attention to the importance of normative theory in the process of constitutionalism in the Islamic world. The study argues that Islamic jurisprudence requires a state or a public authority to ensure the conformity of outward with Islamic norms. Accordingly, the preservation of Islamic norms is a central value controlling the dynamics of public/private distinction. Thus, the central value determines the meaning of limited government, and the study argues this central value in constitutional level defines people's liberties. Then, the study discusses the effect of the Islamic normative theory on the liberal-Islamic model of constitutionalism. …

Career Growth Opportunity On Turnover Intention: The Mediating Role Of Organizational Commitment In Multinational Corporations, Joonghak Lee, Steven B. Kim, Chungil Chae, Jaeeun Lee Jan 2019

Career Growth Opportunity On Turnover Intention: The Mediating Role Of Organizational Commitment In Multinational Corporations, Joonghak Lee, Steven B. Kim, Chungil Chae, Jaeeun Lee

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

In accelerated globalization, multinational corporations (MNCs) continually seek opportunities to expand their businesses to foreign countries. For sustainable businesses in foreign countries, it is important to retain a large number of local employees which is challenging. Based on existing literature in international human resource management, we hypothesized that organizational commitment (OC) is a mediator in the relationship between perceived career growth opportunity (CGO) and turnover intention (TO) among local employees in MNCs. We analyzed a sample from five companies affiliated with a Korean MNC located in Vietnam. From the mediation analysis, it was evident that OC is a partial mediator …
