Caesarean Birth In A Social Context: A Content Analysis Of Childbirth Narratives, Marissa Cobuzio Jan 2019

Caesarean Birth In A Social Context: A Content Analysis Of Childbirth Narratives, Marissa Cobuzio

Honors Program Theses

Childbirth is a shared life experience among a majority of women and is both biological and social in nature. This paper explores the stories women hearing about birth by looking at the language, themes, messages which surround the public discussions of C-section. Using sociological theories of child birth and historical context, this paper answers the question: What are the language, themes, messages used in popular media, such as parenting magazines and “mommy blogs” and how do they characterize caesarean births for women? To answer this questions, a content analysis of two parent blogs was conducted to identify the themes and …

Gender And Singing In The American Classroom, Amanda Franklin

Honors Program Theses

This thesis was written to uncover the history of gender and choral singing, draw connections between gender and music, analyze current student perspectives regarding singing in the American classroom, and offer suggestions for educators in present-day chorus classes. This thesis is most relevant for music educators who seek a more-gender balanced program, but the implications of this research can be applied to gender in education as a whole.

Power, Punk, And Performance: A Critical Analysis Of Hooligan Laws In Russia, Noelle Wurst Jan 2019

Power, Punk, And Performance: A Critical Analysis Of Hooligan Laws In Russia, Noelle Wurst

Honors Program Theses

This paper presents the argument that the criminal charge of hooliganism in Russia is a political tool used to suppress dissent and uphold the authoritarian ideals of Putin’s regime. The background of this analysis includes a broad overview of the development of the hooligan laws over time and how they have been used to advance elite interests. In addition, the key policies, institutions, and rhetoric that surround hooliganism in present-day Russia are identified. The legitimacy of the hooligan laws is then tested against both domestic and international law, especially in regards to norms on freedoms of speech.

Ecopedagogy: Learning How To Participate In Ecological Consciousness, Peterson, Eric Jan 2019

Ecopedagogy: Learning How To Participate In Ecological Consciousness, Peterson, Eric

CONSCIOUSNESS: Ideas and Research for the Twenty-First Century

This paper is the result of an inquiry into ecological consciousness through a participatory paradigm. The dialectical relationship between institutionalized education and consciousness is central to this inquiry’s focus. This exploration into ecological consciousness has lead to the following question: How can institutionalized education be designed, delivered, and experienced in a way that nurtures ecological intelligence, ecological consciousness, and more importantly, ecological activism? The ‘sense of self ‘is a central theme within the paper, and led to the conception of intraearthal and interearthal relationships as a way of communicating our need to identify as being in Earth. The author utilizes …

Ignatian Intent: Using Ignatian Pedagogy For Sustainability In The Sociology Classroom, Erin E. Robinson Jan 2019

Ignatian Intent: Using Ignatian Pedagogy For Sustainability In The Sociology Classroom, Erin E. Robinson

Jesuit Higher Education: A Journal

In the sociology classroom, students expressed thoughts of denial of the importance of a number of social issues, including climate change. During this time, I was involved in two initiatives which were collaborative efforts to weave Ignatian Pedagogy with sustainability education. First, at Canisius College, we developed a Sustainability Initiative to embrace a comprehensive approach to environmental sustainability in academics, community and campus culture. Second, I was invited to become involved with the AJCU Ecology Educators group working on the Ignatian Pedagogy for Sustainability. Through the application of the Ignatian Pedagogy for Sustainability tool kit, I took the opportunity to …

Collaborative Pedagogy In A Design Thinking Education Course, Rosetta Marantz Cohen, Lucy W. Mule Jan 2019

Collaborative Pedagogy In A Design Thinking Education Course, Rosetta Marantz Cohen, Lucy W. Mule

Education and Child Study: Faculty Publications

This article describes a co-taught course that mobilized a Design Thinking approach in the service of creating a prototype for an actual girls' boarding school in Kenya. The goal of the class was to allow students to engage collaboratively with faculty, with their peers, and with experts "on the ground" to develop the various parts of the school, from the mission to the curriculum to the building design. The article describes the rewards and complexities of this kind of hands-on pedagogy in a higher education context.

Gender Disparity In Stem: Evidence From India, Abha Bhagat, R Vijayaraghavan Jan 2019

Gender Disparity In Stem: Evidence From India, Abha Bhagat, R Vijayaraghavan

Teacher India

Although India has made strides in the education of girls, performance and participation of women in stem are still a challenge. An examination of the IBT data shows that performance disparities in mathematics and science between girls and boys grow as students proceed from primary to secondary level.

And Your Little Dog Too: Witchcraft In The Cultural Imagination From The 17th To The 21st Century, Claire Craven Jan 2019

And Your Little Dog Too: Witchcraft In The Cultural Imagination From The 17th To The 21st Century, Claire Craven

Theses & ETDs

Across centuries, the figure of the witch has been used to represent cultural fears and fantasies surrounding gender and power. This thesis examines the varying cultural narratives that have emerged around the archetype of the witch. Chapter One is a reading of three 17th-century English witchcraft plays, William Shakespeare’s Macbeth (1606), John Ford, Thomas Dekker and William Rowley’s The Witch of Edmonton (1621), and Richard Brome and Thomas Heywood’s The Late Lancashire Witches (1634), exploring how witchcraft was portrayed in an era when it was widely believed to exist as a real phenomenon. Chapter Two explores historical fiction written about …

Living To Survive: Causes And Solutions To Poverty Among Low Income, White, Single Mothers, Sabrina Mikes Jan 2019

Living To Survive: Causes And Solutions To Poverty Among Low Income, White, Single Mothers, Sabrina Mikes

Theses & ETDs

The purpose of this study is to understand the causes and solutions to poverty among, low-income, white, single mothers from their perspective. I conducted five in-depth interviews with mothers about their experiences, struggles, needs and perspectives regarding poverty and ultimately the solutions they envision to alleviate it. Building from previous research about the causes of poverty, I use the framework of an individual, cultural, and structural lens to examine these causes and solutions. Through analysis on the five, qualitative interviews with the mothers, I found that bad partners and divorce, the responsibilities and roles of single motherhood, low quality jobs, …

Dance For Parkinson’S, Ryan Smith Jan 2019

Dance For Parkinson’S, Ryan Smith

Theses & ETDs

This thesis offers a qualitative analysis of dance classes intended for individuals living with Parkinson’s Disease (PD). Through field research and semi-structured interviews with participants, carers, and instructors, I aimed to address the question, how can dance class help people negotiate changes in functioning caused by Parkinson’s Disease? I synthesize literature which suggests that dance may be a particularly beneficial activity for people living with PD, and argue that the dance for Parkinson’s model most significantly benefits the lives of participants through the contribution of an accessible dance culture.

“Queer Is The Best Word For It”: Exploring Preference For And Interactional Processes Of ‘Queer’ Identity, Jason D'Amoururs Jan 2019

“Queer Is The Best Word For It”: Exploring Preference For And Interactional Processes Of ‘Queer’ Identity, Jason D'Amoururs

Theses & ETDs

The purpose of this study is to explore how the identity label ‘queer’ serves queer people, and what interactional processes of identity communication look like given such an allencompassing identity term. Through in-depth interviews with eight queer individuals ages 18-25 residing throughout Florida’s Tampa Bay Area, three themes emerged from the data: 1) Participants claimed queer to acknowledge their range of attraction, to account for previous life experience, and to connect them to a community of other queer people. 2) Participants wished to navigate everyday life as a queer person, so as not to hide important aspects of the self, …

Post-Conflict Reconstruction In Colombia: Challenges In Implementing Interim Stabilization With Ex-Combatants Of The Farc, Matthew Bocanumenth Jan 2019

Post-Conflict Reconstruction In Colombia: Challenges In Implementing Interim Stabilization With Ex-Combatants Of The Farc, Matthew Bocanumenth

Theses & ETDs

After half a century of armed conflict, Colombia faces a politicized post-conflict transition in which it struggles to reintegrate the FARC’s ex-combatants. As a response to this premature context for traditional disarmament, demobilization, and reintegration, the Government of Colombia is utilizing Interim Stabilization measures to reintegrate the FARC collectively in temporary sites known as Territorial Spaces for Training and Reincorporation [ETCR]. Nonetheless, challenges in implementing the ETCR are causing FARC ex-combatants to abandon the reintegration process, raising concerns ex-combatants may fall into recidivism. A previous attempt at utilizing Interim Stabilization in Colombia struggled to deter many paramilitary excombatants from rejoining …

Let’S Play Hong Kong: Defining Culture And Representing Identity In Sleeping Dogs, Kris Lylah Brzostek Jan 2019

Let’S Play Hong Kong: Defining Culture And Representing Identity In Sleeping Dogs, Kris Lylah Brzostek

Theses & ETDs

The increased sophistication of virtual realms has transformed video gaming into a sphere of hyperreality, with realism and authenticity placed at the core of developing engaging narratives and immersive worlds. In Sleeping Dogs, players become Wei Shen, an undercover cop combating the triad organizations of Hong Kong. Players explore a condensed version of the city as they navigate through the criminal underworld and experience Wei’s journey. The developers’ vision of what Hong Kong means as an identity, place, and culture is illustrated through the design of the environment, structure of the narrative, and creative choices. Although created for leisure purpose, …

Epistemic Injustices Of Economics And Their Effects On Economic Theory, Kaylie J. Mccarthy Jan 2019

Epistemic Injustices Of Economics And Their Effects On Economic Theory, Kaylie J. Mccarthy

Theses & ETDs

Economic knowledge is communally created. Since its beginning, the creation of knowledge in economics has been exclusionary of both women as epistemic agents and women as economic actors. The chronic hermeneutical marginalization of women from economic theory has resulted in epistemic injustices which both impair women as knowers in economic academia and create damaging “gaps” of knowledge in the truth-seeking process of economic theory and methodology. This in turn, strips women of the hermeneutical tools to understand and effectively communicate their lived economic reality to those knowers outside of their social position. Further, these epistemic injustices also disproportionately harms women’s …

Identity Negotiations Of Bilingual Lgbtqia+ Latinos/As/Es/Xs, Andreina Carrasquero Jan 2019

Identity Negotiations Of Bilingual Lgbtqia+ Latinos/As/Es/Xs, Andreina Carrasquero

Theses & ETDs

The following study explores how people who self-identify as LGBTQIA+, bilingual in English and Spanish, and Latino/a/x/e conceptualize and communicate their identities through language. I conducted 7 loosely structured in-depth interviews in Spanglish to investigate how people who identify as LGBTQIA+, bilingual, and Latino/a/x/e talk and make sense of their identities. I found that participants conceptualize and communicate their identities by using a narrative approach to identities, employing code-switching and Spanglish, and by providing alternate meanings to Spanish as well as changing and transforming the Spanish language. This study also explores how oppression and trauma work to impact participants’ identities …

Extending Hanson's Thoughts On Observation, Shane Archuleta Jan 2019

Extending Hanson's Thoughts On Observation, Shane Archuleta

Theses & ETDs

In this thesis, I argue that observation is a practically engaged, on-going, evaluative endeavour. In order to do so, I draw from Hanson’s seminal essay “Observation”, identifying the factors which inform observation that consequently lead to thinking of observation as an experience, rather than as a product/output. This is followed by a thorough exploration of an everyday example of observation. Finally, I expose the evaluative dimensions of observation. One of the main aims of this thesis is to contribute to critiques against hard-minded empiricist approaches to observation and the world.

“A Combination Of Serious Politics And Joyful Living”: Connections Between Political Goals And Sense Of Community In Aids Coalition To Unleash Power (Act Up), Elliot Gardner Jan 2019

“A Combination Of Serious Politics And Joyful Living”: Connections Between Political Goals And Sense Of Community In Aids Coalition To Unleash Power (Act Up), Elliot Gardner

Theses & ETDs

AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power is a social movement group that was most prominent from 1989-1995, during which it made substantial progress in the landscape of AIDS rights and research. Through examining the experiences of former ACT UP members, this thesis aimed to understand the connections between a social movement’s political goals and members’ sense of community. To do so, I performed secondary interview analysis on fifteen interview transcripts accessed through the ACT UP Oral History Project. Through this analysis, I found that political goals and sense of community for former ACT UP members were connected in three ways. First, …

Chiron: Self-Actualization Through Musical Performance, Myles Optimystic Rodriguez Jan 2019

Chiron: Self-Actualization Through Musical Performance, Myles Optimystic Rodriguez

Theses & ETDs

This thesis explores the relationship between musical performance and self-actualization. I argue that self-actualization is not a linear, step-by-step process (as suggested by Maslow’s hierarchy of needs) but rather an ongoing journey that a person engages with throughout many developmental stages of life. My research is guided by the following question: What are the ways in which musical performance can assist in the process of self-actualization? To answer this question, I examine data from loosely-structured interviews with musical artists, my own creative process, and songs from my thesis album, CHIRON. In this thesis, I discuss five themes that contribute to …

A Top-Down Approach To National Memory Formation: Holocaust Remembrance And Memory Laws In Russia, Ukraine, And Poland, Bailey Humyn Jan 2019

A Top-Down Approach To National Memory Formation: Holocaust Remembrance And Memory Laws In Russia, Ukraine, And Poland, Bailey Humyn

Theses & ETDs

This thesis examines the top-down approach to national memory formation carried out by post-communist governments in Eastern Europe. The governments of Russia, Ukraine, and Poland have gone to great lengths to create an official national memory of the Holocaust to the exclusion of the collective memories of others. To study how a state-sponsored national memory is institutionalized in a country, I analyze presidential speeches related to the Holocaust and the ways they are influenced by nondomestic factors and examine Holocaust museums in Russia, Ukraine, and Poland. I then examine the creation of memory laws by these countries and analyze how …

Menstruating And Doing Masc: Trans Experiences Of Menstruation, Emily Via Jan 2019

Menstruating And Doing Masc: Trans Experiences Of Menstruation, Emily Via

Theses & ETDs

This thesis explores menstruation as a gendered, embodied act looking specifically at transgender people who menstruate. Though scholars have studied women’s experiences of menstruation as gendered, little has been written on the experiences of transgender people who menstruate and the attitudes they have toward menstruation. In this project, I asked how trans people navigate menstruation, which is socially coded as feminine, alongside their non-female gender identities. I conducted loosely-structured, in-depth interviews with seven assigned-female-at-birth trans people asking about their lifelong experience with and narratives of menstruation. I found that my participants expressed discomfort with narratives of womanhood associated with menarche, …

Shusaku Endo: Demonstrating The Wholeness Of The Christian Experience In Japan Through Silence And Scandal, Carly Richardson Jan 2019

Shusaku Endo: Demonstrating The Wholeness Of The Christian Experience In Japan Through Silence And Scandal, Carly Richardson

Theses & ETDs

The focus of this thesis is the Japanese Catholic author Shusaku Endo, and his influence on the Japanese Christian community. Endo struggled with fitting in to the Japanese community as a Christian, as well as having difficulty being accepted into the Christian community as a Japanese person. His struggles with finding acceptance are present in his novels, and result in his works having a prominent Christian influence. Through analyzing his novels Silence and Scandal, I argue that his works have successfully brought awareness to the Japanese Christian community. My first chapter gives an overview of Shusaku Endo’s life, as well …

“Doing Art Politically”: Thomas Hirschhorn’S Gramsci Monument, Abigail De Gregorio Jan 2019

“Doing Art Politically”: Thomas Hirschhorn’S Gramsci Monument, Abigail De Gregorio

Theses & ETDs

This thesis explores the political framing of Thomas Hirschhorn’s Gramsci Monument, a temporary installation into the urban public space of the Forest Houses housing project in the Bronx, New York in 2013. This temporary community-based work resisted “activist” art practices, a popular trend in contemporary art since the 1990s. The monument proposes a politics of making connections and confronting the reality of the social in an urban setting as opposed to one that adheres to a specific representation of a political approach to communities and public space. I begin by examining this political resistance in Hirschhorn’s conceptual frameworks. Then, I …

Ethnographic Colonization: A Postcolonial Theoretical Examination Of The Italian Migration To Argentina From 1870 To 1914, Lewis Lee Jan 2019

Ethnographic Colonization: A Postcolonial Theoretical Examination Of The Italian Migration To Argentina From 1870 To 1914, Lewis Lee

Theses & ETDs

This thesis explores the question of how migrants become colonizers, specifically examining the Italian migration to Argentina from 1870 – 1914. In the context of this particular period, the question is whether or not these migrants unknowingly acted as agents of a larger Italian colonial project by engaging with the Italian government’s created nationality, or italianità. By building a theoretical lens through the theories of Ania Loomba and Frantz Fanon on colonialism, Lorenzo Veracini on settler colonialism, Albert Memmi on the colonizer and the colonized, and Anibal Quijano on the coloniality of power, it is possible to see how these …

Fill The Earth And Subdue It: Evangelicals, Environmentalism, And Religious Divides, James Spencer Powell Jan 2019

Fill The Earth And Subdue It: Evangelicals, Environmentalism, And Religious Divides, James Spencer Powell

Theses & ETDs

Christianity contains numerous ecotheologies that present humans as the epitome of creation, but also instruct them to care for the Earth. While Christian environmental organizations have flourished over the past few decades, studies have consistently linked belief in Christianity and Evangelicalism in particular to negative environmental ethics and lack of support for environmental regulation. Numerous explanations for Evangelical’s aversion to environmentalism have been explored and tested such as biblical literalism, religiosity, morality, eschatology, and political conservatism with different explanations ultimately resulting. This led me to explore what aspects of Christianity are responsible for these environmental ethics by studying the social …

Something To Believe In: A Multidimensional Approach To Education Encompassing: Radical Pedagogies, Reading The World And The Metaphysics Of Racial, Gendered And Societal Barriers In Education., Yvenord Mergilles Jan 2019

Something To Believe In: A Multidimensional Approach To Education Encompassing: Radical Pedagogies, Reading The World And The Metaphysics Of Racial, Gendered And Societal Barriers In Education., Yvenord Mergilles

Theses & ETDs

This thesis is an exploration that moves past simply ushering diverse persons into the academy. What happens once entry occurs? The thesis offers revisions to pedagogies and highlights context and difference as key areas that current best practices and calls for innovative education overlook. The work is based in a learner-centered approach and from a student-centered perspective, a perspective novel in the field. Reading the world and Intersectionality are core theoretical frameworks which guided the exploration. This exploration focused on learner centered assessment, the acknowledgment of difference through access to knowledge, survivalist tactics and their metaphysical underpinnings as means of …
