Rangeland Management During Drought: Assessing Social–Ecological And Cognitive Indicators Of Ranchers’ Adaptive Capacity, Tonya Haigh
School of Natural Resources: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Rangeland managers face challenges to adapt to climate extremes, and research is needed on how to support their adaptive capacity for managing climate risk. This study evaluates adaptive capacity using an integrated vulnerability and resilience conceptual model and three cognitive behavioral models. Overarching research questions focus on the relationship between protective action and impacts and the best predictors of taking action in response to drought. Three studies address these questions, using quantitative data collected from two post-drought surveys of rangeland-based livestock managers in the Northern Great Plains of the U.S. The studies find evidence of the roles of social-ecological sources …

The Influence Of Socioeconomic Factors To The Use Of Mobile Phones In The Agricultural Sector Of Tanzania, Edison Wazoel Lubua Dr, Michael E. Kyobe Prof.
The African Journal of Information Systems
This study determined the influence of socioeconomic factors to the adoption of mobile phones in the farming community of Tanzania. Currently, a series of well-established models (such as the TAM, UTAUT and the Social Capital Model) provide inadequate consideration toward socioeconomic factors, by ignoring them, or putting them under the same cluster, regardless of their differences in impacting the technology use. Methodologically, a survey strategy was adopted, with a sample of 116 respondents. The study involved farmers along the Pangani River Basin, found in Kilimanjaro and Tanga Regions of Tanzania. Data was analyzed using advanced quantitative methods such as the …
The Macroeconomics Of Pascal’S Wager, Paul Shea
The Macroeconomics Of Pascal’S Wager, Paul Shea

This paper explores the determinants of religiosity in a growth model. Religion reduces the time available for labor and the perceived likelihood of hell. A genetic algorithm selects agents’ discount factors based on their parents’ wealth. A higher discount factor increases savings, encouraging wealth accumulation, but also increases the discounted disutility of eternal damnation, incentivizing religion. The model converges to intermediate levels of the discount factor and religion where wealth is maximized. The genetic process selects agents’ level of patience, and the impact on religion is a side effect. Religion thus exists in equilibrium, even if it reduces genetic fitness.

Recruiting And Retaining Higher Risk Youth In Promotion And Prevention Programs Fy 2018-2019, Marijana Kotlaja, Chelsea W. Harris, Erin Wasserburger, Juvenile Justice Institute, University Of Nebraska At Omaha
Reports
Evidence-based practices for reducing youth involvement in the criminal justice system have gained a considerable amount of attention over the past few decades. One such practice is delinquency prevention and promotion (PP) programs, which aim to promote positive behaviors and prevent negative behaviors. Research has demonstrated that PP programs can target risk factors at different stages of development thought to contribute to antisocial behavior, reducing the likelihood of criminal justice involvement (Pardini, 2016). Once a program is in place, however, recruiting the youth most likely to benefit from the program and retaining those youth can be a significant challenge. Specifically, …

Resiliency, Adversity, And Autonomy Experiences Of Sex Work Employees, Kaytlin R. Smith
Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)
When thinking of an individual employed as a sex worker, one may imagine two common media portrayals; a young, good-hearted, traumatized prostitute in need of saving, and the other a more experienced and perhaps culpable person “of the night” (Dalla, 2000). However, this dichotomous view fails to account for the autonomy of the worker, or adequately capture the complex range of motivations that bring individuals into the field (Chudakov, Ilan, Belmaker, & Cwikel, 2002). This research has been complicated by the criminalized nature of sex work, as well as common cultural moral objections to the services of this industry. This …
Aristotle And Habituation: Is Virtue Really Attainable Without God's Help, Roy Michael Mattson
Aristotle And Habituation: Is Virtue Really Attainable Without God's Help, Roy Michael Mattson
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
We are by nature moral beings who desire virtue. This fact is borne out by innumerable studies. Aristotle’s Nicomachean Ethics and Eudemian Ethics remain among the most influential works on ethics and human moral psychology. Aristotle claims that human beings can develop good character traits and achieve virtue with the appropriate upbringing (what Aristotle called habituation). Much of what Aristotle says about character traits, virtue, and habituation is accepted today and inspires character education. Yet recent results in experimental psychology challenge the notion of character traits and virtue as understood by Aristotle. The challenge is the abundance of evidence showing …

Facebook's "Oversight Board:" Move Fast With Stable Infrastructure And Humility, Evelyn Douek
North Carolina Journal of Law & Technology
Facebook’s proposed Oversight Board is one of the most ambitious constitution-making projects of the modern era. With pre-existing governance of tech platforms delegitimized in the ongoing “techlash,” this represents a pivotal moment when new constitutional forms can emerge that will shape the future of online discourse. For all the potential of the Facebook Oversight Board (FOB), there are many things it cannot be. It will not hear a sufficient proportion of Facebook’s content moderation cases to be a meaningful response to calls for greater due process in individual decisions. Nor will it be able to become a font of globally …

Abstract Addiction to drugs and alcohol is a widespread, and ever-growing problem in American society today. Individuals who undergo treatment for their addiction often find it difficult to gain employment due to employers' negative perceptions of addiction. Previous research has found that many employers have a stigma of those in addiction recovery. However, little research has been done to determine if these stigmas affect hiring decisions. Drug and alcohol misuse are prominent in the Appalachian area, which presents an issue for employers in the area who maintain a drug-free work place or who have a stigma of those in addiction …

People With Developmental Disabilities Have Much More Life To Live, Dalton Stevens
Population Health Research Brief Series
On average, adults with any type of developmental disability die 23.5 years before those without a developmental disability. Despite this disadvantage, health care providers, policymakers, and scholars have done little to address or understand the significantly shorter lifespans of people with developmental disabilities. This research brief discusses age-at-death mortality patterns for adults with various types of developmental disabilities.

CORE
When tragedy strikes, leaders must rise to meet the challenge. In recent years, the increasing threat of terrorism, natural disasters, and social challenges has furthered the development of new leadership theories. As people seek hope and security among turbulent times, the strength of a leader is often determined by the followers’ perception of their identity. Furthermore, cultural and technological advancements have enabled the rapid dissemination of information, thereby expanding the capability of leaders and social groups to spread their ideologies.

Global Justice Vs. U.S. Global Hegemony: Rejecting Bolton’S Opposition To The Icc, Norman Swazo
Cardozo International & Comparative Law Review
Former U.S. National Security Advisor John R. Bolton has announced that as an official Trump Administration national security policy, the USA will not support the International Criminal Court (ICC) and instead will work for its demise. At issue here is a concept of global justice versus insistence on US global hegemony and a Pax Americana. Here, the author argues against Bolton's position rejecting the legitimacy of international law and the ICC. Bolton 's appeal to a principle of consent must yield to a principle of salience, as defended by Ronald Dworkin; a concept ofjustice, as advocated by Amartya Sen; and …

EKU Faculty and Staff Scholarship
The exorbitant costs of textbooks are hindering college student success. The open educational resource movement is disrupting the for-profit model and offering a quality alternative for faculty and students. But skepticism remains among some faculty. How can libraries leverage our relationships with faculty to help students get the information they need to succeed in their classes?

Still Writing At The Master’S Table: Decolonizing Rhetoric In Legal Writing For A “Woke” Legal Academy, Teri A. Mcmurtry-Chubb
The Scholar: St. Mary's Law Review on Race and Social Justice
When the author wrote Writing At the Master’s Table: Reflections on Theft, Criminality, and Otherness in the Legal Writing Profession almost 10 years ago, her aim was to bring a Critical Race Theory/Feminism (CRTF) analysis to scholarship about the marginalization of White women law professors of legal writing. She focused on the convergence of race, gender, and status to highlight the distinct inequities women of color face in entering their ranks. The author's concern was that barriers to entry for women of color made it less likely that the existing legal writing professorate, predominantly White and female, would problematize the …

This study examined factors that influenced whether Hispanic soldiers will elect to seek treatment for alcohol abuse. The data for this study were collected using archival data from the Army Study to Assess Risk and Resilience in Servicemembers (STARRS) survey conducted between the years 2011 and 2013. The STARRS dataset consisted over 21,000 surveys but for this study the sample size was specific to Hispanic soldiers wi th alcohol abuse (n= 917). The impact of seven independent variables on the dependent variable of treatment seeking was examined in the final statistical model. The seven independent variables examined were pri mary …
Giving Intention Versus Giving Behavior: How Differently Do Satisfaction, Trust And Commitment Relate To Them?, J Shang
Plymouth Business School
This research quantifies for the first time in the literature how strong the direct and indirect relationships are between satisfaction, trust, and commitment and giving intention versus giving behavior. We constructed a unique data set of over 17,000 donors from five large charities. We applied the latest mediation framework for categorical variables from consumer behavior. We found that at a group level, most of the direct and indirect effects that exist between satisfaction, trust, commitment, and giving intention also exist between these factors and giving behavior, but the effect sizes are between 3 to 8 times larger in modeling giving …
