Sponsored Research Indirect Costs: A Single-Site Case Study Of Public Research University Stem Faculty Members’ Perspectives, Susan Gossman
Sponsored Research Indirect Costs: A Single-Site Case Study Of Public Research University Stem Faculty Members’ Perspectives, Susan Gossman
The Qualitative Report
This explanatory case study investigated the phenomenon of one institution’s public research university STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) faculty members’ perspectives on indirect cost recovery from research grant funding. The explanatory scheme incorporated organizational culture, faculty socialization, and political bargaining models in the conceptual framework. The analysis indicated that faculty socialization and organizational culture were the most dominant themes; political bargaining emerged as significantly less prominent. Public research university STEM faculty are most concerned about the survival of their research programs and the discovery facilitated by their research programs; they resort to conjecture regarding the utility of indirect cost …

The Influence Of Socio-Demographic Characteristics On Environmental Concern And Ecologically Conscious Consumer Behaviour Among Macedonian Consumers, Barbara Čater, Julijana Serafimova
Economic and Business Review
Western Balkan countries face a decisive moment in the development of their economies, societies and the environment. According to the European Environment Agency, household consumption patterns in these countries have changed rapidly in the recent years and are of key interest due to the fact that unsustainable patterns of consumption are an important cause of environmental problems. The main purpose of this paper is to add to the body of knowledge on environmental consumer profiling, especially in the context of post-transition economies. We present the results of a survey on 323 Macedonian consumers, relating their attitudes and consumption patterns to …

Change Ready, Resistant, Or Both? Exploring The Concepts Of Individual Change Readiness And Resistance To Organizational Change, Eva Repovš, Mateja Drnovšek, Robert Kaše
Economic and Business Review
This paper is a qualitative review of two concepts: change readiness and resistance to change. We review their use, clarify their conceptual underpinnings, and address the assumption of them being the opposite poles of the same continuum. We juxtapose the two concepts and analyze their dimensions which commonly represent a source of ambiguity about their meaning, review their evolution, and compare them to similar concepts. We argue that resistance to change addresses two important aspects: resistance as behavior and resistance as attitude. We argue that because resistance to change and change readiness share attitudinal roots, they should be looked at …

Psychology Faculty Articles and Research
Objective This paper examines whether multidimensional indicators of objective and subjective socioeconomic status (SES) across the life course can be categorized into latent classes of SES mobility and tests the associations of these categories with inflammation markers among White and Black adults.
Methods Data are from 592 non-Hispanic White and 158 non-Hispanic Black participants who completed both the baseline survey and biomarkers assessment of the Midlife in the United States (MIDUS) Refresher study. Groups of different SES mobility were examined using latent class analysis.
Results White and Black participants showed different patterns of SES mobility. Among Blacks, the latent classes …

JADARA
The role of the gay/lesbian person in the deaf culture and communication problems which contribute to or interfere with self acceptance as well as family or community acceptance are the focal points for this article. Changes that have been made in the deaf culture and in the culture at large in respect to sexual identity issues and the comparison of communities (deaf to gay/lesbian) are also outlined. Although not addressing very aspect of the issues surrounding the deaf, gay/lesbian client, this article provides suggestions for counselors and others who may be confronted with these issues.

Obstacles To Excellence: Academic Freedom And China's Quest For World-Class Universities, Chelsea Blackburn Cohen
Biennial Conference: The Social Practice of Human Rights
China’s government has made significant investments to develop universities that already compete with the world’s best. Their progress has captured global attention over the years, with universities around the world forging partnerships with institutions in the People’s Republic of China (PRC), and scholars and students around the world flocking to study, teach, and research in the country. But while China continues to stoke its ambitions for developing more world-class universities, respect for academic freedom and other human rights essential to quality higher education lags behind, leaving scholars and students at risk, and the country’s goals in balance.
With the recent …

Ethics And Methods Of Human Rights Work: Exploring Both Theoretical And Practical Approaches, Shayna Plaut, Maritza Felices Luna, Christina Clark Kazak, Neil Bilotta, Lara Rosenoff Gauvin
Biennial Conference: The Social Practice of Human Rights
This workshop will explore both theoretical and practical approaches to methodologies and ethics as it relates to human rights work.
The goal of the workshop is to create a dynamic space that encourages participants to share and learn from our own experiences navigating the messiness of human rights ethics and methods. We specifically address formal education and systems and structures so that we may all design, do and teach research and practice related to human rights in a more critical and sustainable manner. We recognize the tensions of creating research, programs and advocacy that is seen as “legitimate” to educational …
Toward A Human Rights Impact Assessment Tool, Mona Younis
Toward A Human Rights Impact Assessment Tool, Mona Younis
Biennial Conference: The Social Practice of Human Rights
Human rights organizations are increasingly questioned about impact, which is particularly challenging for overextended and under-resourced groups that tackle complex issues requiring a long view to be achieved. They would greatly benefit from a manageable assessment tool to capture how well they are doing on key dimensions that are essential for that long-view impact. Building on my experience with the Ford Foundation’s Organizational Mapping Tool designed to assess organizational capacity, I propose to develop a tool to assess human rights impact.
The tool will enable any human rights organization to assess how it is doing in areas that are essential …
Professional Resistance Of Lawyers: Defending Human Rights And The Rule Of Law In Hong Kong After Umbrella Movement, Yan-Ho Lai
Biennial Conference: The Social Practice of Human Rights
Purpose: Against the backdrops of deteriorating human rights protections and the rule of law after the unprecedented Umbrella Movement in Hong Kong, this paper investigates the roles and impacts of mobilised legal profession in resisting China’s authoritarian rule over and defending domestic human rights regime in Hong Kong. This paper argues that, despite the legal profession of Hong Kong becomes further divided under the political and economic statecraft, lawyer activism as a professional resistance becomes a new force to resist the political intervention of the rule of law as well as deepening the cultural and institutional foundations of the rule …

The Campus Human Rights Index: Measuring University Commitment To Human Rights, Charles Crabtree, Volha Chykina, Kiyoteru Tsutsui, Michelle Bellino
Biennial Conference: The Social Practice of Human Rights
To what extent do universities respect human rights? Despite the prevailing view that universities are bastions of progressive ideas with a bias for rights protection, anecdotal evidence suggests that they diverge significantly in their commitment to promote and protect human rights, even within the U.S. To this point, though, there exists no systematic measure of university human rights commitments. In this manuscript, we introduce the first such indicator - the Campus Human Rights Index (CHRI). We describe the measure and introduce our initial ranking of universities. We then formally assess the construct validity of our measure by comparing it to …

From Birmingham To Lima: Expanding Mobility For Persons With Disabilities, Shane Burns
Biennial Conference: The Social Practice of Human Rights
Social issues such as resource allocation, distributive justice, and civic participation have been the hallmarks of human rights discourse. These issues are particularly salient to persons with disabilities, arguably one of the most excluded communities in the world despite representing over 15% of the global population. Inaccessibly built environments are one the key barriers for persons with disabilities because they prohibit full access to spaces and services that promote social inclusion. Additionally, persons with disabilities have drawn limited attention from the realms of urban planning and development. As a result, the importance of disability rights must be viewed as a …

Engaging And Mobilizing Men To Promote Women's Human Rights, Rus Ervin Funk
Biennial Conference: The Social Practice of Human Rights
Over the past twenty years, there have been increasing of and progressively more effective efforts to engage, mobilize and organize men in support of advancing women’s human rights. The Declaration from the UN conference on Women in Beijing, the Declaration from the UN Report on, and the UNHCR Declaration on the Elimination of Violence Against Women all make powerful statements as to the need to engage men and boys in efforts to promote and enhance gender equality and women’s human rights. Most recently, the UN HCR agreed upon Declaration 35/10 (2017) outlined in very concrete and specific ways that male …
The Segregation Of Religion: How Othering Influences Society’S Narrative Understanding About The Symbiotic Relationship Among Racism, Sexism, And The Church, Ajanet Rountree
Biennial Conference: The Social Practice of Human Rights
The social dependence on the sociology of male spiritual leadership is substantial. This dependence accomplishes two ideas: neutralizes the feminine experience and obviates the anthropological implications of religion in the perpetuation of oppression and subjugation. When considering racism and sexism in religion, specifically as they relate to the Black Christian church, a dismissal of accusations and assertions occurs by yielding to the context of the social era. This paper seeks to further clarify the position of women, who pushed against the grain of the gendered and racialized spaces of their churches and communities, as they sought to establish human rights …

Grassroots Globalism: Human Rights Cities And Local Human Rights Implementation, Jackie Smith
Biennial Conference: The Social Practice of Human Rights
This presentation reports on how local human rights activists are mobilizing around the United States's 2019-2020 Universal Periodic Review process in the UN Human Rights Council. Organizers with the US Human Rights Cities Alliance have been promoting "UPR Cities" to engage local activists in work to document local human rights conditions and develop recommendations for a national civil society stakeholder report that will be submitted to the UN Human Rights Council. The UPR Cities serves three key purposes: First, it helps inform and inspire local and trans-local mobilization and alliance building around a human rights framework, advancing analyses of the …

The Comparative Study Of Civilizations And Its Relation To China, David Wilkinson
The Comparative Study Of Civilizations And Its Relation To China, David Wilkinson
Comparative Civilizations Review
Chinese scholars have recently expressed much interest in the comparative study of civilizations, lately carried on mostly in the West, but long open to, and increasingly of interest to, diverse perspectives. This essay is intended to suggest a road toward the development of comparative-civilizational studies centered on some questions of both historical and contemporary significance, with particular attention to one question concerning which the initial presuppositions of Western and Chinese scholars, in particular, may be at variance, but where there may be room for the development of agreed empirical-theoretical conclusions.

Does “Hurt” Help? A Review Of Miriam Boeri’S Hurt: Chronicles Of The Drug War Generation, George K. Danns Dr.
The Journal of Public and Professional Sociology
ABSTRACT
This article is a review of the book “HURT: Chronicles of the Drug War Generation” by Miriam Boeri. Through ethnographic research the author provides interpretative explorations of the personal lives and moral careers of 100 Baby Boomers addicted to illicit drugs, ensnared in the criminal justice system, buffeted by other agencies of social control and continuously marginalized by mainstream society. This review questions whether the author adhered to the norm of “value neutrality” in conducting the study and whether the study design and conclusions are characterized by bias? The book presented a contest between agency and social …
The Element-Based Method Of Civilization Study, Andrew Targowski
The Element-Based Method Of Civilization Study, Andrew Targowski
Comparative Civilizations Review
The purpose: to define the element-based method of studying civilization with a meaningful contribution to contemporary life. The methodology: the transdisciplinary, big-picture view of human development on Earth based on graphic modeling of civilizational elements, their relations, and dynamics. The findings: about 200+ civilizational elements have been recognized within about 500 possible elements of society, culture, and infrastructure. Practical implications: today, civilization infrastructure challenges society and culture, which can lead to the fall of the Homo sapiens race and the rise of a human-machine race. Moreover, one of the options will be the rise of designer babies and the dichotomy …
