Caregiver Companion: A Service-Learning Initiative In Tippecanoe County, Danielle Auckley, Jack Harber
Caregiver Companion: A Service-Learning Initiative In Tippecanoe County, Danielle Auckley, Jack Harber
Purdue Journal of Service-Learning and International Engagement
In this paper, we share our reflection of our semester-long service learning and community engagement project in partnership with a local organization in Lafayette called Caregiver Companion. Caregiver Companion is a non-profit organization serving the elderly and disabled community in Tippecanoe County by providing companionship and respite breaks for overwhelmed caregivers. Our English 420 Business Writing class assisted Caregiver Companion on publicizing the organization to Purdue students as well as community members with digital communication materials. With a close partnership with the Caregiver Companion staff, we created materials such as newsletters, brochures, advertisements, and videos to bring their mission to …

Cafe Erc Nasis Survey Questions 2019 Winter Report, Julia Mcquillan
Cafe Erc Nasis Survey Questions 2019 Winter Report, Julia Mcquillan
Nebraska Annual Social Indicators Survey (NASIS)
Using NSF ERC Planning Grant funds ($7,500), we added X number of survey items to the 2019 Winter Nebraska Annual Social Indicators Survey (NASIS) conducted by the Bureau of Sociological Research (BOSR). In 2019 NASIS was conducted by mail. BOSR mailed surveys to a random sample of Nebraska households using Address Based Sampling. The CAFE ERC planning team added questions to NASIS along with other researchers at the University of Nebraska who shared the cost of the “core” questions (e.g. level of education, age, race/ethnicity, depression, religion, political orientation, quality-of-life topics, etc). Overall NASIS is a cost-effective way to collect …

Growing The Revolutionary Intellectual, Creating The Counterpublic Sphere, Peter Mclaren, Lilia D. Monzó
Growing The Revolutionary Intellectual, Creating The Counterpublic Sphere, Peter Mclaren, Lilia D. Monzó
Education Faculty Books and Book Chapters
"Here we seek to illuminate some important nuances and articulations surrounding the challenges that face us as dissident intellectuals at this particular historical conjuncture and to explore ways in which the public· intellectual can be reconceptualized and revitalized in revolutionary terms. This fits well with our goal for this essay-which intends to serve as a countervailing riposte to the role of the free-market intellectual and to insist on a materialist and indigenist recentering of the role of the intellectual in today's social order."

Hypertension And Hiv In An Urban Slum Setting, Port-Au-Prince, Haiti, Olga Tymejczyk
Hypertension And Hiv In An Urban Slum Setting, Port-Au-Prince, Haiti, Olga Tymejczyk
Dissertations and Theses
Background: Rapidly growing urban slum settings increasingly face co-occurring communicable and non-communicable health crises, against the backdrop of extreme poverty, and social and environmental vulnerability. In Haiti, sparse data suggest a growing burden of hypertension and cardiovascular disease (CVD), along with substantial prevalence of HIV, increasingly recognized as a major CVD risk factor. As life-saving antiretroviral treatment (ART) is extended to more people living with HIV (PLWH), their risk of CVD increases with longer life expectancy and possibly cumulative ART exposure. Pregnant HIV-positive women may face additional cardiovascular vulnerability, due to the risk of gestational hypertension and pre-eclampsia. Integration of …

Enhancing Scholarly Productivity Among Physical Therapy Faculty Through Professional Networks, Betsy J. Becker, Gilbert Willett, Victoria Kennel
Enhancing Scholarly Productivity Among Physical Therapy Faculty Through Professional Networks, Betsy J. Becker, Gilbert Willett, Victoria Kennel
Posters and Presentations: Physical Therapy
Purpose
Let's build a talented workforce of physical therapy educators with diverse ideas who collaborate on projects and discover new knowledge! Faculty are the educational leaders in physical therapy. With growing demands on workload and time, it is essential to attract talent to academia and provide a supportive team to navigate the path toward a successful career. Scholarly productivity accreditation requirements are challenging, especially for new faculty with primary teaching responsibilities or those without an academic doctoral degree. Evidence suggests that network connections can improve faculty performance, innovation and retention. This study arose from concerns in recent years related to …
Using Emphasis-Purposeful Sampling-Phenomenon Of Interest–Context (Eppic) Framework To Reflect On Two Qualitative Research Designs And Questions: A Reflective Process, Michael E. Kalu
The Qualitative Report
A satisfactory research question often signifies the beginning point for many researchers. While this can be true for quantitative studies because of pre-defined research questions, qualitative research questions undergo series of revisions through a reflective process. This reflective process provides the framework for the subjectivity associated with qualitative inquiry. The continuous iterative reflective process is an essential component for developing qualitative research questions that correspond with the various qualitative study designs. Although qualitative inquiry is term exclusively subjective, there is a need to use a framework in developing qualitative research questions. The Emphasis- Purposeful sampling- Phenomenon of interest – Context …
La Aproximación Dialógica Al Abuso Sexual Infantil Y Sus ‘Efectos’ Sexuales: La Experiencia De Un Hombre Con Identidad Gay, Alma V. Guzmán-Díaz, Patricia Trujano Ruiz
La Aproximación Dialógica Al Abuso Sexual Infantil Y Sus ‘Efectos’ Sexuales: La Experiencia De Un Hombre Con Identidad Gay, Alma V. Guzmán-Díaz, Patricia Trujano Ruiz
The Qualitative Report
When Deaf Parents Adopt Deaf Children: An Investigation Of The Concept Of Adoptive Parent Entitlement In Deaf Adopted Families, Barbara J. White
When Deaf Parents Adopt Deaf Children: An Investigation Of The Concept Of Adoptive Parent Entitlement In Deaf Adopted Families, Barbara J. White
JADARA
The literature on Deaf people as parents in the past two decades is presented from both a culturally affirmative and a medical/pathological perspective (Jones, 1995; Lane, 1992, 1993; Meadow-Orlans, 1997; Spencer, Bodner-Johnson & Gutfreund, 1992), with the latter being more prevalent. It is rare to find an article that portrays Deaf people as highly competent and successful parents. It is even rarer to find an article that shows positive outcomes when Deaf parents adopt children (Shettle, 1997; White, 1997). The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the experiences of adoptive parenthood from the viewpoint of seven Deaf mothers …
Social Identity In Deaf Culture: A Comparison Of Ideologies, Deborah L. Maxwell-Mccaw, Irene W. Leigh, Alan L. Marcus
Social Identity In Deaf Culture: A Comparison Of Ideologies, Deborah L. Maxwell-Mccaw, Irene W. Leigh, Alan L. Marcus
JADARA
The emergence of Deaf culture and recent developments in identity research fueled by cultural diversity has ignited exploration of identity development in deaf people. The issue of how individuals go through the process of developing identities related to being deaf is now receiving much attention. Two major theoretical models in the literature, specifically racial identity development models and bicultural/acculturation models are presented and then discussed in terms of how they might apply to deaf people. Subsequently, we describe two separate measures that have been developed to empirically test the application of these models to deaf populations. While research on both …

Journal of Amish and Plain Anabaptist Studies
Plain Meetinghouses is a coffee table-style book that explores the artistic angle of Lancaster County, PA’s, Old Order Mennonite meetinghouse architecture, the history of these places, and the religious practices occurring therein. The accompanying text breaks no new ground in scholarship on Old Order Mennonite history and ritual but is an attractive packaging of familiar information. In addition to photos, the book contains helpful, to-the-point narrations providing socio-religious descriptions of these places, helpful because the photos contain no people at what are overtly social places. The book’s contribution, then, is the attractive organization of information, both in photograph and in …
Between Alpine Identity And Civic Duty: Encounters With Swiss Brethren In Rudolf Von Tavel’S Historical Novel Der Frondeur (1929), Berit Jany
Journal of Amish and Plain Anabaptist Studies
The history of seventeenth-century Swiss Brethren in the State of Bern has been one of growth, persecution, and support from sympathetic neighbors. Their struggles and persistence have inspired a number of authors to produce fictional narratives dealing with the brethren in their Bernese homeland. This article examines Rudolf von Tavel’s historical novel Der Frondeur (1929), in which he depicts the persecuted brotherhood in Bern. The following analysis exposes the way in which the author has fictionalized the Anabaptist group, its commitment to theological and ethical aspects, and the experience of persecution. In particular, the study investigates which characteristics drawn from …
Occupation Patterns Of Amish Settlements In Wisconsin, John Cross
Occupation Patterns Of Amish Settlements In Wisconsin, John Cross
Journal of Amish and Plain Anabaptist Studies
This article explores occupation patterns of Amish households and settlements in Wisconsin. Wisconsin has seen dramatic growth in Amish settlements over the past 50 years. Using household occupation data reported in Amish directories, dairy producer license listings, and surveys of Amish leaders in 2012 and 2015, this article describes primary household economic activities. Key findings include (1) a rate of 58 percent of Wisconsin’s Amish households are employed in some type of farming, (2) 37.4 percent of all Wisconsin Amish households have dairy herds, and (3) in 32 percent of Amish settlements, woodworking jobs dominated. Maps visualize the proportion of …
