Suffering And Climate Change Narratives, Simon C. Estok
Suffering And Climate Change Narratives, Simon C. Estok
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In his article "Suffering and Climate Change Narratives" Simon C. Estok begins with a brief survey of definitional issues involved with the term “suffering” and argues that there has been a relative lack of theoretical attention to suffering in climate change narratives, whether literary or within mainstream media. Estok shows that suffering, far from being singular, is a multivalent concept that is gendered, classed, raced, and, perhaps above all, pliable. It has social functions. One of the primary reasons for the failure of climate change narratives to effect real changes, Estok argues, is that they often carry the functions of …

Teaching and Supervision in Counseling
The present study evaluates the impact of an evidence-based suicide intervention model and how pedagogical practices of counselor education programs may prepare counselors-in-training (CIT) to respond to clients who are considering suicide. Using content analysis to explore pre and post-training data, the researchers examined the impact of the 14-hour evidence-based Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) on 54 CITs (76% female, 24% male; 58% White, 20% African American, 11% Latinx/Hispanic, 11% Other), with a mean age of 30 years (SD =8.6). Further data were collected 6 months later, after CITs had the opportunity to utilize suicide intervention skills during their …
Intersectionality Pedagogy In The Classroom: Experiences Of Counselor Educators, Jenae D. Thompson, Corinne W. Bridges
Intersectionality Pedagogy In The Classroom: Experiences Of Counselor Educators, Jenae D. Thompson, Corinne W. Bridges
Teaching and Supervision in Counseling
The role of intersectionality in counselor education and supervision has not been formally addressed by researchers in the preparation of counselors in training. Traditional ways of teaching multicultural and diversity issues in counseling include compartmentalized discussions about social identities, but do not incorporate intersectionality despite its significance in describing how individuals move through the world. The method of inquiry used to collect and analyze data was heuristic in nature due to the focus on contextual experiences of the participants as well as the researcher. The results showed how seven CES faculty members’ personal and professional experiences influenced their incorporation of …

Teaching and Supervision in Counseling
As a core curricular standard that applies to all Council for the Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP, 2015) accredited programs, human growth and development can present unique challenges for the teaching professional. In this article, we present an in-class activity grounded in problem-based learning that uniquely lends itself to the task of supporting medium-to-large classrooms in learning about human growth and development.

Teaching and Supervision in Counseling
This qualitative study investigated the training experiences of 12 students of color in CACREP-accredited master’s level counseling programs using semi-structured phenomenological interviews. The 12 participants identified as Asian American (n = 2), Japanese American (n = 1), Chinese (n = 1), Black (n = 1), African American (n = 1), Latino and/or Hispanic (n = 3), and multiracial (n = 3). We used interpretive phenomenological analysis and identified three main themes: cultural marginalization; biculturalism; and safe or counter-hegemonic relationships. Training implications for counselor education programs are provided.
Caring Masculinities And Affective Equality: The Role Of Caring In Gender Justice And Transforming Masculinities, Niall Hanlon
Caring Masculinities And Affective Equality: The Role Of Caring In Gender Justice And Transforming Masculinities, Niall Hanlon
Conference papers
The unequal distribution caring, emotional and relational work has long been recognised by feminists as an impediment to gender equality in social, cultural, economic and political life. Gender equality requires affective equality; the equal sharing of both the burdens and benefits of love, care and solidarity. Studies of men and masculinities, while also interested in caring, having a traditional emphasis on issues such as fathering, the socialisation of boys, male role models, and men’s wellbeing, have now also begun to address caring and equality more broadly and specifically within sociology, social policy and welfare state studies. Critical studies of men …

Improving Patient Flow By Increasing Early Discharges On A Mother & Baby Unit, Faye Weir, Joy Moody, Kathleen Cyr, Cathy Palleschi, Stephen Tyzik, Joseph East, Heidi Morin, Suneela Nayak, Ruth Hanselman, Amy Sparks
Operations Transformation
Discharging patients early in the day has many advantages amongst which is increased bed availability. However, the experience in a large academic tertiary medical center demonstrated that most discharges occurred early to mid afternoon. A care team on a mother /baby unit established a quality improvement project to increase the number of discharges by 11AM and streamline key discharge planning activities.
A root cause analysis identified multiple barriers to attaining he established goals. To address these barriers, a multi prong approach was instituted to include a discharge education KPI for all unit staff.
Data collection post countermeasure implementation demonstrated some …

Treating Substance Use Disorders: Enhancing Attendance At The Weekly Inpatient Medication Assisted Treatment Group, Devon Gillis, Jayne Weisberg, Dena Whitesell, Amy Mcauliffe, Amy Sparks, Suneela Nayak, Ruth Hanselman, Stephen Tyzik
Operations Transformation
At a large academic tertiary medical center, an Integrated Medication Assisted Treatment (IMAT) program has been established for those medically stable inpatients with an addiction diagnosis. Over a four month period, this program had experienced a decline in attendance and a quality improvement project was initiated is to better understand the barriers to attendance and institute a process that would reverse the decline.
A goal was established to improve attendance by medically stable patients that have consented to participate to a minimum of 50%.
A root cause analysis outlined numerous causes for low attendance and several countermeasures were established to …

Faculty Perceptions Of Service User Empowerment And Consumerism, A Quantitative Study, Nafees Alam
Social Work Faculty Publications
Background: The purpose of this exploratory study was to establish the state of US social work faculty perceptions on service user empowerment and consumerism. Despite the trademark of the profession being service user-oriented, United States’ social work curricula lacks service user inclusion in the education of social workers. Methods: This was a cross-sectional exploratory study involving 404 social work faculty across the United States. In addition to demographic variables, the instrument used consisted of a questionnaire informed by existing literature. Results: The maximum possible composite score for this study was 50. The mean composite score was 41.977 (SD = 3.647), …

The Difference That Women Make: Government Performance And Women-Led Agencies, Maria J. D'Agostino
Publications and Research
Empirical research on the difference that gender makes is sparse. This study is the first step toward providing evidence that agencies led by women perform better than those led by men. Using the Federal Employee Viewpoint Survey (FEVS) data, this study examines the research question: Are women improving federal government agency performance? Preliminary results indicate that they do. The broader goal of social justice frames the discussion of findings.

A Conceptual Content Analysis Of 75 Years Of Diversity Research In Public Administration, Maria J. D'Agostino
Publications and Research
Abstract Diversity is an important facet of public administration, thus it is important to take stock and examine how the discipline has evolved in response to questions of representative democracy, social equity, and diversity. This article assesses the state-of-the-field by addressing the following question: How has research on diversity in the field of public administration progressed over time? Specifically, we seek to examine how the focus of diversity has transformed over time and the way the field has responded to half a century of legislation and policies aimed at both promoting equality and embracing difference. We utilize a conceptual content …

Understanding Equitable Assessment: How Preservice Teachers Make Meaning Of Disability, Melissa K. Driver
Understanding Equitable Assessment: How Preservice Teachers Make Meaning Of Disability, Melissa K. Driver
Journal of Multicultural Affairs
Disproportionality of historically marginalized populations in special education continues to be a critical concern. The identification of students with disabilities is reliant on valid and reliable assessment that is free of bias. The extent to which this is possible given measurement constraints and an increasingly diverse student population is unclear. How teachers are trained to design, select, administer, score, and interpret assessment data related to the identification of students with disabilities is vastly under-researched considering the significant implications of assessment practices. In this study, six special education preservice teachers engaged in an assessment methods course during their second semester of …
Community Planning: A Perceptual Approach To Tourism Development, David L. Groves
Community Planning: A Perceptual Approach To Tourism Development, David L. Groves
Visions in Leisure and Business Monographs
Tourism development requires professional planning and cooperation between political leaders and the community. Barriers to good tourism planning may be perceptual. Differences in perspectives from individuals and groups involved may impede the planning process. Conflict resolution involves understanding the perceptual issues of those involved in the planning process. The purpose of this study was to develop a perceptual mapping procedure, which could serve as a basis of conflict resolution. The individuals sampled were convention and visitors bureau (CVB) directors in Northwest Ohio in an area known as the Great Black Swamp. Data collection was conducted in three phases which determined …

Symposium Panel: Ensuring Access Tojustice In Maine’S Rural Communities, Kevin Stitham, Sarah Gilbert, Toby Jandreau, Adam Swanson
Maine Law Review
The dichotomy between the greater Portland area and Route One corridor, and Maine’s rural inland and Down East communities, is stark in many ways—economic, cultural, political, and spatial. These differences converge when it comes to the availability and accessibility of process and justice, and find particularly vivid expression in Maine’s well documented rural lawyer shortage. How is the rural lawyer shortage affecting Maine’s rural communities, what steps are being taken to address those problems, and what more can be done? In short, what can be done to ensure Maine’s rural communities are not denied an effective justice system?
Ross Hays Oral History.
Pediatric Palliative Care Oral History Project
Dr. Ross Hays begins the interview by describing how he continued to pursue training after his pediatrics residency, transitioning to study birth defects, training in rehabilitation medicine, and finally training in bioethics. Dr. Hays was then recruited to become the principal investigator for a demonstration project by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation titled Promoting Excellence in End-of-Life which finally allowed him to tie all his training experiences together. Dr. Hays then describes his observations that pain in pediatrics was recognized, but there was a lack of urgency in clinical need to treat pain -- maybe in part due to that …

Fathers’ And Mothers’ Attachment Styles, Couple Conflict, Parenting Quality, And Children’S Behavior Problems: An Intervention Test Of Mediation, Philip A. Cowan, Carolyn Pape Cowan, Marsha Kline Pruett, Kyle Pruett
School for Social Work: Faculty Publications
A diverse sample of 239 primarily low-income couples participated in a random controlled trial of the Supporting Father Involvement couples group intervention. In this report, we examined the value of adding measures of fathers’ attachment style and parenting to mothers’ measures in order to explain variations in children’s behavior problems. We also tested the hypothesis that the link between intervention-induced reductions in couple conflict and reductions in anxious/harsh parenting can be explained by intervention effects on parents’ attachment insecurity or on anxiety and depression. Fathers’ attachment security and parenting behavior added significantly to mothers’ in accounting for children’s internalizing and …

Designing Rigorous Tests Of Workforce Interventions In Complex Environments, Quality Improvement Center For Workforce Development
Other QIC-WD Products
Public child welfare agencies continually struggle with how to address issues of staff recruitment and retention. Furthermore, very little evidence exists regarding what works to attract, select, and retain talented staff. Much of what agencies do to address workforce issues is never formally evaluated and successes are not published widely. Thus, agencies confronted with urgent retention needs have little to go on to identify an intervention that is likely to succeed. The Quality Improvement Center for Workforce Development (QIC-WD) was funded by the Children’s Bureau to begin to address this issue, in part through carefully selected, and rigorously evaluated interventions …
