Assessment Of Deaf And Hard-Of-Hearing Persons: A Strengths Based Transactional Deafness Paradigm, Martha Sheridan Oct 2019

Assessment Of Deaf And Hard-Of-Hearing Persons: A Strengths Based Transactional Deafness Paradigm, Martha Sheridan

JADARA

This article discusses the existence of a cultural and professional obsession with pathology which has jaded mental health assessments of consumers. The importance of incorporating ecological and strengths perspectives into the assessment process is discussed. It is suggested that individual and environmental strengths need to be taken into consideration for a more positive, respectful and empowering shift in assessment paradigms to occur. Deaf knowledgeable mental health professionals have an ethical obligation to consider the strengths and meanings of various d/Deaf, hard-of-hearing and late deafened realities as well as the individual's ancestral, cultural, spiritual and gender realities. A strengths based transactional …

Work Experience Of People Who Are Deaf Or Hard Of Hearing In Hong Kong, Petrus Ng Oct 2019

Work Experience Of People Who Are Deaf Or Hard Of Hearing In Hong Kong, Petrus Ng

JADARA

Helping members of the deaf culture to engage in gainful work is an important means of their integration into the community. However, members of the deaf culture are often received simply as those with impaired hearing, and they experience difficulties in obtaining and keeping work. Cross-cultural and communication conflict is a major factor affecting their employment opportunities. Audism, the social prejudgement of the capacities of members of the deaf culture, is part of this conflict. These factors restrict their social and vocational opportunities. The aim of this study is to assess the employment situation of members of the deaf community …

Essays By Deaf Youth: Implications For Counselors And Teachers, David S. Martin, William P. Mccrone, Patricia Martin

JADARA

For several years, Gallaudet University's School of Education and Human Services and Pre-College National Mission Programs (now Clerc Center) have co-sponsored an annual national essay contest for deaf and hard of hearing students in schools across the United States. In 1998, an unusually high number of essays -235- were received for review. During the process of serving as members of the judges’ panel for this national contest, the co-authors noted potentially important trends and patterns across the corpus of essays.

Bourdieu In Plain Anabaptist Studies? A Symposium Review Of Good Gingrich, Luann. 2016. Out Of Place: Social Exclusion And Mennonite Migrants In Canada. Toronto, On: University Of Toronto Press., Jeffrey Longhofer, Steven Reschly, Luann Good Gingrich

Journal of Amish and Plain Anabaptist Studies

Editor’s introduction—This symposium offers the reviews of two authors who, without sparing whatever criticism can be mustered, hold her work up as archetypal for rigorous methods and theory in plain Anabaptist studies. I have little more to say about Luann Good Gingrich’s work than that it is has been long, long in waiting. But let me add just a bit more and say why.

Now here is a study where a researcher has brought thick theory to interpret meticulously collected and presented interview data about a plain Anabaptist group (Old Colony Mennonites) in the context of broader forces. Yet, with …

Paradigmatic Paradigm Problems: Theory Issues In Amish Studies, Steven Reschly Oct 2019

Paradigmatic Paradigm Problems: Theory Issues In Amish Studies, Steven Reschly

Journal of Amish and Plain Anabaptist Studies

Scholars of Amish history and culture, and scholars of Anabaptist and Anabaptist-descent groups more generally, have not engaged consistently or productively with mainstream theoretical developments in social and cultural studies. The phrase used most often in Amish Studies, “negotiating with modernity,” has limited usefulness because of its abstractions and time restrictions. A viable alternative rises from the research and writings of French sociologist Pierre Bourdieu, who formulated Habitus and Field as terms to theorize about the interaction of internal and external in human experience, perhaps the oldest and thorniest issue in the social sciences. Reformulated for more general use as …

Writing Life, Writing Back, And Writing Through: Saloma Furlong's Why I Left The Amish: A Memoir And Bonnet Strings: An Amish Woman's Ties To Two Worlds, Sabrina Voelz

Journal of Amish and Plain Anabaptist Studies

In recent years, the memoir boom has left publishers searching far and wide for new material. As part of this trend and the immense demand for anything Amish, non-professional writers have seized the opportunity make their voices heard. While there is a wealth of scholarship on the Amish, the often trauma-filled narratives of the ex-Amish have neither been widely accessible to the public, nor the subject of much academic scrutiny until recently. This article explores the memoir, its genre conventions, and current debates. Furlong’s debut memoir, Why I Left the Amish (2011), is a powerful narrative about a desperate struggle …

Issues Associated With Late Onset Deafness, Margery A. Rothschild, Charlene M. Kampfe

JADARA

Late deafened adults are individuals who have acquired a severe or profound hearing loss in adulthood. They comprise the largest proportion of the deaf population, yet little information is available about their condition and its influence on them. The current article will discuss problems experienced by late deafened adults, psychosocial aspects associated with late hearing loss, and suggestions that might assist professionals in working with these individuals. In addition to a literature review, personal accounts of the first author will be provided.

Assessing The Need For A Job Coaching Curriculum In The Baltimore-Washington Area, Peggy Muth Oct 2019

Assessing The Need For A Job Coaching Curriculum In The Baltimore-Washington Area, Peggy Muth

JADARA

The trend to move consumers from sheltered workshop settings into community employment has created new career paths for rehabilitation professionals. One of these career paths is that of a Job Coach. Currently, in the Baltimore-Washington area, there are no formal programs preparing college students to enter this emerging profession. A survey was conducted in the Baltimore-Washington area, and a subsequent review of the literature was performed to determine if there was a need for a college level curriculum to prepare individuals to become Job Coaches to work with consumers who are deaf. The results of the survey and review of …

Using Technology To Reduce The Burden Of Paperwork: Preliminary Lessons Learned From The Qic -Wd Virginia Site, Quality Improvement Center For Workforce Development

Other QIC-WD Products

The Quality Improvement Center for Workforce Development (QIC-WD) partnered with the Virginia Department of Social Services (VDSS) in 2017 to conduct research examining the efficacy of technology interventions aimed at reducing child welfare staff turnover and improving child welfare outcomes. Virginia is a state-supervised, countyadministered child welfare system. The state elected to study the implementation of and outcomes from job modernization technology interventions in 18 localities. These 18 localities represent a workforce of approximately 450 of the state’s 2,200 frontline staff. The intervention is occurring in multiple phases: (1) transcription services; (2) a mobility technology application; and (3) a Comprehensive …

Considering "Atmosphere" When Facilitating Information Seeking By People With Invisible Disabilities In Public Libraries, Rebecca Muir, Kim M. Thompson, Asim Qayyum Oct 2019

Considering "Atmosphere" When Facilitating Information Seeking By People With Invisible Disabilities In Public Libraries, Rebecca Muir, Kim M. Thompson, Asim Qayyum

Faculty Publications

Twenty percent of Australians reported having a disability in 2015. Disability may occur at any time during the lifespan, however most disabilities are invisible. When a disability is invisible, or not immediately apparent to an outsider, individuals may need to self-identify to access inclusive services, or accommodation may never be offered at all.

When the perceived number of information seekers with a disability is low, information organisations may deem services unnecessary. Considering information access is a human right, information service providers and researchers need to seek low cost and low effort ways to facilitate information access and information seeking behaviors. …

Deafened Adults: Adjusting To A New World, Stephen J. Larew Oct 2019

Deafened Adults: Adjusting To A New World, Stephen J. Larew

JADARA

The task of assisting deafened adults in adapting to the loss of receptive communication, as well as the resulting social, psychological, and employment changes presents many challenges to professionals in the field of deafness. People who became deaf after the age of 18 years have to make adjustments to offset their loss of receptive communication skills. The process of learning to accept and cope with hearing loss involves many adjustments by the deafened individuals and significant people in their lives. Rehabilitation professionals need to have an understanding of the adjustments being faced by deafened individuals and be prepared to provide …

Counseling With Deaf Clients: The Need For Culturally And Linguistically Sensitive Interventions, Paul Freedman Oct 2019

Counseling With Deaf Clients: The Need For Culturally And Linguistically Sensitive Interventions, Paul Freedman

JADARA

Many counselors and therapists who work with culturally Deaf clients have had the unfortunate experience of trying to use what they consider to be an appropriate intervention, only to see it elicit a response of silence and puzzlement from the client. At other times the clinician may become creative and use an intervention that seems to propel the session forward. Why is it that certain types of interventions tend to work better with Deaf clients? Why is it that some interventions seem inappropriate? Are there certain types of interventions that are best suited for use within a visual/gestural mode of …

His House, Our House And Her House: A Filmic Place For Women, I Troiani Oct 2019

His House, Our House And Her House: A Filmic Place For Women, I Troiani

School of Art, Design and Architecture

The most famous architects in the world are, and have always been, men, although a growing number of women architects are beginning to gain international and public recognition. Architecture, more than some other types of professions, has moved slowly to accommodate its own increasing number of women practitioners (Fowler and Wilson 2004). This is in part because of its link to ‘a specific historical and cultural construction of masculinity and a masculinist vision of professional work’ (Davies 1996: 661) within what remains to be a maledominated construction industry. A UK report documenting women’s membership into the Chartered Institute of Building …

I Want To Know Why, Virginia Casper, Rebecca J. Newman Oct 2019

I Want To Know Why, Virginia Casper, Rebecca J. Newman

Occasional Paper Series

In this article, an early childhood coach and her mentor coach tell one story of their year of joint reflective work together. They follow the topic of outdoor play in birth-to-three and early childhood family-based care programs as it surfaced at the beginning of the year. This inquiry expanded into the coach’s burgeoning understanding of the meaning of experience for very young children, which became a parallel process in the coach’s work with practitioners. Together, the coach and mentor coach describe the ways in which they created a more authentic and meaningful way to think about outdoor time and environments …
