Lessons And Policy Implications From The Flint Water Crisis, Amy Krings, Dana Kornberg, Shawna Lee Oct 2019

Lessons And Policy Implications From The Flint Water Crisis, Amy Krings, Dana Kornberg, Shawna Lee

Center for Social Development Research

The results of the Flint water crisis were disastrous. Permanent damage has been done to Flint’s most vulnerable residents, the city’s water system, and residents’ trust in government institutions.

This policy brief describes the shortcomings of Michigan’s emergency management (EM) system and informs policymakers on potential improvements for its eventual replacement. It frames the EM system within the logic and practice of urban austerity politics and demonstrates how emergency manager policies are not race-neutral approaches to solving urban financial crises. It considers what the Flint water crisis suggests about policy mechanisms that might prevent future environmental health crises, outlining the …

Causes Of English Major Student-Teachers' Classroom Participation Reluctance At Kuwait University, Wafaa S. Al-Yaseen

Journal of Educational and Psychological Studies

Classroom participation plays an important role in developing students' oral fluency, and general understanding of the subject content. However, there is a noticeable participation reluctance among English major student-teachers in the College of Ed-ucation at Kuwait University. The present study investigates the causes of such a reluc-tance. The study adopted the descriptive analytical methodology applying a 4-Likert scale to respond to a thirty questionnaire items. Two domains were covered: the English language professor, and the English major student-teachers. The sample covered a total of 150 English major student-teachers 30 males and 120 females. The study revealed significant differences α=0.05 in …

The Effects Of Erosion Structures On Triplett Creek From The Fall Of 2016, 2017, And 2018, Haylee Winters Oct 2019

The Effects Of Erosion Structures On Triplett Creek From The Fall Of 2016, 2017, And 2018, Haylee Winters

Posters-at-the-Capitol

Triplett Creek is a tributary of the Licking River. It runs through Morehead, KY, where we are conducting our research.

The creek was modified in the 1970s but construction was halted before the project was complete. Unfortunately, the result was an increase in overflow and subsequent riverbank erosion. The city installed sediment trap rocks in hopes of slowing down the water and decreasing erosion. We are using drones and photogrammetric software to map the area and compare images of the river to determine erosion rates. The new images will be compared to ones taken in previous years to visualize the …

A Socio-Religious Introduction To The Apostolic Churches In North America, Cory Anderson Oct 2019

A Socio-Religious Introduction To The Apostolic Churches In North America, Cory Anderson

Journal of Amish and Plain Anabaptist Studies

The Apostolic Christian Churches descend from the religious revivals instigated under the leadership of Samuel Fröhlich in 1830s Switzerland. Fusing Anabaptist thought into his revival through contact with Mennonites, Fröhlich’s movement constitutes a distinct religious tradition within the larger Anabaptist movement. Research about this Anabaptist tradition has remained sparse. This article helps introduce the Apostolics to a scholarly audience. It reviews the movement’s recent history in North America, tracing the history of both the largest body—the Apostolic Christian Church of America—and several smaller, generally more conservative, factions. In addition to establishing links between the Apostolics and other Anabaptist branches, this …

Helping Parents Navigate The Child Welfare System: Partnering With Casa To Create Self-Advocacy Resource Kits, Amanda Warnock

Purdue Journal of Service-Learning and International Engagement

There are 442,995 children in contact with child welfare systems in the U.S. today (HHS, 2018). While some children represented in this statistic were victims of abuse, such as physical (12%) or sexual abuse (4%), many of these children and their families come to the attention of child protection authorities because of neglect (62%), meaning that their parents/caregivers lack adequate resources to properly provide and care for their dependent children (HHS, 2018). For some families, involvement with child protection authorities means being separated–with children placed in foster care and parents working through the court-mandated requirements in order to be reunified …

La Aproximación Dialógica Al Abuso Sexual Infantil Y Sus ‘Efectos’ Sexuales: La Experiencia De Un Hombre Con Identidad Gay, Alma V. Guzmán-Díaz, Patricia Trujano Ruiz Oct 2019

La Aproximación Dialógica Al Abuso Sexual Infantil Y Sus ‘Efectos’ Sexuales: La Experiencia De Un Hombre Con Identidad Gay, Alma V. Guzmán-Díaz, Patricia Trujano Ruiz

The Qualitative Report

Using The Deaf Community As An Alternative Treatment Strategy: Developing Deaf Treatment Foster Homes, Stephen H. Hamerdinger, Daniel Murphy Oct 2019

Using The Deaf Community As An Alternative Treatment Strategy: Developing Deaf Treatment Foster Homes, Stephen H. Hamerdinger, Daniel Murphy

JADARA

There are few treatment programs for deaf children who have severe emotional or behavioral disturbances. Most programs are residential in nature. While these programs provide a much needed service, they are not available to every child that needs treatment. Further, many children do better in smaller, family oriented environments than they do in residential treatment programs. Therapeutic foster care approaches are increasingly being used in many places as an alternative to residential treatment for hearing children.

Until recently, such programs have not been greatly utilized as an alternative to treatment for deaf children. When deaf children are placed in such …

When Deaf Parents Adopt Deaf Children: An Investigation Of The Concept Of Adoptive Parent Entitlement In Deaf Adopted Families, Barbara J. White Oct 2019

When Deaf Parents Adopt Deaf Children: An Investigation Of The Concept Of Adoptive Parent Entitlement In Deaf Adopted Families, Barbara J. White

JADARA

The literature on Deaf people as parents in the past two decades is presented from both a culturally affirmative and a medical/pathological perspective (Jones, 1995; Lane, 1992, 1993; Meadow-Orlans, 1997; Spencer, Bodner-Johnson & Gutfreund, 1992), with the latter being more prevalent. It is rare to find an article that portrays Deaf people as highly competent and successful parents. It is even rarer to find an article that shows positive outcomes when Deaf parents adopt children (Shettle, 1997; White, 1997). The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the experiences of adoptive parenthood from the viewpoint of seven Deaf mothers …

The term "Black Deaf Persons" can be referred to as African American Deaf persons or Black Deaf persons originally from America, Africa, Caribbean countries, or other countries. The learning objectives are to scrutinize and explicate both the ecological and systems framework for understanding the relationships that occur within Black families with Deaf members and among other social systems that are involved with Black Deaf persons, and planning and implementing creative interventions to adjust Black Deaf …

One Client: Many Provider Roles- Dual Relationships In Counseling Setting, Debra Guthmann, Wendy Heines, Marcia Kolvitz Oct 2019

One Client: Many Provider Roles- Dual Relationships In Counseling Setting, Debra Guthmann, Wendy Heines, Marcia Kolvitz

JADARA

Unlike professionals who work with hearing consumers, those of us working with deaf and hard of hearing individuals invariably will encounter our consumers outside of the work environment. Should professionals who work with deaf and hard of hearing clients in vocational rehabilitation, social work, mental health, post-secondary settings or other human service agencies socialize with their clients? How should professionals deal with the number of dual relationship issues that arise on a regular basis? Is the significance of dual relationships different for hearing and Deaf professionals? Whenever we as professionals are operating in more than one role, and when there …

Mixed Gendered Group Psychotherapy Of Sexually Abused Deaf College Students, Diane D. Morton, Alan L. Marcus

JADARA

The prevalence of childhood sexual abuse among deaf people has not been widely reported. Moreover, documented effective treatment approaches with this population is very limited to traditional forms of individual psychotherapy treatment. The purpose of this study was to explore the feasibility and challenges of implementing a mixed gender group psychotherapy program with deaf survivors of sexual abuse in childhood. Two, year long mixed-gender groups provide the case material to discuss issues related to the setting up of such a group as well as the effectiveness of treatment. Anecdotal findings from the two groups are reported.
