County Probation: A Service-Learning And Community Engagement Project For Criminology, Abby Byrnes, Chelsea Scuderi, Lindsay Smalec, Vince Filippini, Sarah Mooney
The International Undergraduate Journal For Service-Learning, Leadership, and Social Change
Our group focused on understanding the role of the probation office in the criminal justice system and in society. We were fortunate enough to work with the Union County Probation Office where we focused on adult probation, juvenile probation, and treatment court. We focused specifically on how it works, the effects of probation on society, and the differences between juvenile and adult probation. Much of what we learned through our participation at the Union County Probation Office relates to topics we covered in class discussions, debates, and in the textbook readings, making this a very worthwhile experience for our learning. …

Pathways To Retention: Job Satisfaction, Burnout, & Organizational Commitment Among Social Workers, Aaron R. Brown, Jayme E. Walters, Aubrey E. Jones
Sociology, Social Work and Anthropology Faculty Publications
Purpose: Job satisfaction, burnout, and organizational commitment remain concerns for human service organizations. Few studies have utilized a large sample of social workers to investigate these factors while also considering practice setting. In the present study, work-related burnout, satisfaction with workload, and satisfaction with organizational environment are examined as factors contributing to organizational commitment while comparing the measurement and predictive strength of these factors based on practice setting. Method: Confirmatory factor analyses and structural equation modeling were used to estimate and compare factors related to organizational commitment with a sample of 1,786 social workers practicing in the United States. Results: …

Abstract
Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) has been classified as the most common form of dementia. Primary health care providers are usually the first clinicians to whom individuals present with symptoms of dementia. By 2050, it is expected that as many as 13.8 million Americans will be living with AD, and millions more will be placed in the challenging role of providing care for these individuals. However, studies continue to show that dementia is often underdiagnosed and under detected. The purpose of the study was to systematically inquire about the impact of AD education on level of knowledge about AD among primary …

Book-Sharing As A Context For Fathers And Mothers To Enhance Language Development Of Their Preschool Children, Yagmur Seven
Book-Sharing As A Context For Fathers And Mothers To Enhance Language Development Of Their Preschool Children, Yagmur Seven
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Poor reading levels is a pervasive problem in the US. For example, two of every three eigth grade students in the US are estimated to demonstrate insufficient reading comprehension skills. Early use of decontextualized language, in which the language expressed is removed from the here and now, serves as a precursor of academic language proficiency. Starting as early as the third year of life, decontextualized language is less likely to be practiced in lower socio-economic status (SES) households. Although storybooks offer a rich context for practicing the language with young children, reading storybooks alone is not adequate to promote conversational …
Suicide: From Sin To Sickness, Kylie Candela, Arcadia University
Suicide: From Sin To Sickness, Kylie Candela, Arcadia University
The Compass
From Judas to Kurt Cobain, suicide has not been a stranger to both ancient and modern cultures. However, Western cultures have come to view suicide differently. Since Christianity became Western society’s largest practiced religion, suicide has been considered to be a mortal sin. However, as more research has been done on mental illness, Westerners have begun to view suicide sympathetically as a sign of severe mental suffering.

Through collaboration with the not-for-profit organization Midnight Basketball Australia, I created a life skills workshop which focuses on assisting individuals with creating daily schedules. Midnight Basketball Australia is a national organization that trains and supports communities to build life skills and foster confidence in teenagers. Other goals of this organization include initiatives to create and support positive mentorships and opportunities within rural and disadvantaged communities. Through their programs, Midnight Basketball Australia aims to reduce the stereotype of degenerate teenagers by reducing deviant behavior.
This paper demonstrates my collaboration with this company by outlining the basis for the positive social change …

Using Critical Race Theory To Examine Race And Racism In Social Work Education, Ebony Nicole Perez
Using Critical Race Theory To Examine Race And Racism In Social Work Education, Ebony Nicole Perez
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Race and racism have proven to be a core concept of U.S. society that impacts People of Color through a set of challenges which have created and maintained enduring racial disparities and inequities. The social work profession has a time-honored commitment to working with and advocating historically marginalized populations. Social workers work with individuals, groups, and communities to help assess needs, strengths, support networks, respond to crisis situations, and advocate for social justice. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to investigate the experiences of undergraduate social work educators (BSWEs) who teach to encourage the development of students’ knowledge, …

Journal of Health Disparities Research and Practice
Purpose/Background: The United Nation outlines a blueprint for addressing social determinants of health (SDOH), reconciling disparities between and within countries. Indigenous people living in Small Island Developing States like the U.S. territories experience health disparities. In American Samoa (AS), SDOH involving political, social, and data limitations provide challenges to in-country research and health services delivery capacity including cancer prevention and treatment. For example, in AS less than 7% of age-eligible adults participated in colorectal cancer (CRC) screening, while the Healthy People 2020 target is 70% screened. In 2004 a cancer awareness and service needs assessment in AS funded by the …

urpose/Background: “Weaving” Indigenous and Western knowledges are understood to advance health equity for the Indigenous community whose own knowledge and values are often subsumed. Partnerships that support Indigenous leadership and bring Indigenous knowledge to greater parity with Western knowledge are imperative. Indigenous people living in Small Island Developing States like the U.S. territories experience health disparities. The WHO has declared non- communicable diseases as a global health epidemic, including cancer disparities. In American Samoa (AS) less than 7% of age-eligible adults participated in colorectal cancer (CRC) screening, while the Healthy People 2020 target is 70% screened. CRC may be prevented …

Human Papillomavirus (Hpv) Vaccination Status Among University Freshmen In Hawai‘I, May Rose I. Dela Cruz, Myron B. Thompson, John J. Chen, Carolyn Ma
Journal of Health Disparities Research and Practice
Purpose/Background: The HPV vaccine provides immunity against nine HPV strains that cause cancer and genital warts. It is recommended for 11 to 12 year olds, and "catch-up" immunization is recommended for females 13 to 26 years old and males 13 to 21 years old. College students represent an important population for HPV vaccination due to their increased risk for HPV infection. Despite the benefits of the HPV vaccine, its coverage rates are low in Hawaii. Hawai‘i is the home of two large universities on two islands that are representative of Hawai‘i’s populations, including Native Hawaiians, Filipinos, and Pacific Islanders. The …

The objective of this research was to examine the pathway from public stigma, to perceived stigma, to depression in adolescents via internalized stigma. Adolescents in grade 7 through 9 from a junior high school in Changhua County in Taiwan completed self-administered surveys from March to July in 2018. Adolescents were asked questions regarding depressive symptoms, obesity-related perceived stigma, and internalized stigma. Structural equation modeling was used to fit the pathway model. The pathway was first analyzed with the full sample and then stratified by actual and perceived weight status. Our final analytic sample consisted of 464 adolescents. The pathway model …
