Stress, Cognitive Distortions, Engagement In Self-Care, And Burnout In Psychology Graduate Students, Lauren Matturro
Stress, Cognitive Distortions, Engagement In Self-Care, And Burnout In Psychology Graduate Students, Lauren Matturro
PCOM Psychology Dissertations
Psychology graduate students are tasked with finding a balance between academic responsibilities, clinical training, home life, time constraints, and financial concerns. These competing demands lead to stress, which is well documented in medical students with similar workloads, but understudied in psychology graduate students. Previous studies indicate that perceived stress can be linked to prevalence of an individual’s cognitive distortions. Additionally, stress within the human service fields often leads to burnout. Self-care is widely recognized as a preventative effort against developing burnout. However, as students have limited time, they may find engaging in self-care activities to be difficult. The purpose of …
Alternative Infrastructure Finance: Should The United States Adopt Federal Guidelines To P3 Concessions, Dih-Lin Wong
Alternative Infrastructure Finance: Should The United States Adopt Federal Guidelines To P3 Concessions, Dih-Lin Wong
Cardozo International & Comparative Law Review
The article argues that the U.S. struggles with modernizing its infrastructure due to insufficient investment and a lack of standardized legal frameworks for public-private partnerships (P3s). While P3s offer a promising alternative to traditional financing by allocating risks and generating efficiencies, the U.S. faces challenges due to a patchwork of state-level laws and procurement practices. The article suggests that adopting federal guidelines for P3s, drawing lessons from successful models in the UK and Australia, could streamline infrastructure financing, attract private investment, and enhance project efficiency.

Emergency Removals: Does The Statutory Language Of N.Y. Fain. Ct. Act § 1024 Safeguard Vulnerable Families From Foster Care Panic?, Sydney Myones
Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice
The note examines the surge in emergency child removals by the Administration for Children's Services (ACS) in New York City following the high-profile death of Zymere Perkins, arguing that these removals are driven by "foster care panic" rather than a genuine change in family conditions. It critiques the broad discretion granted to ACS under N.Y. Fam. Ct. Act 1024 and advocates for a more balanced approach that prioritizes family preservation and addresses systemic biases.

Food Insecurity And Youth Homelessness: A Qualitative Approach To Understanding Barriers And Strategies Of Food Obtainment, Marina Marmolejo
Public Health Theses
Objectives: The goal of this project is to better understand the intersection between food insecurity and youth homelessness, and more extensively explore how youth develop survival skills while combating barriers to healthy eating.
Methods: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 30 youth (18-25 years old) experiencing homelessness in Los Angeles (LA). Interviews were conducted on site at a drop-in center in LA. An Outreach & Engagement Program Manager assisted the principle interviewer in criterion sampling. Each interview lasted approximately 20-80 minutes and participants were compensated with $20. Data saturation was determined through preliminary analysis, and thematic coding was conducted through Dedoose. …
Gaps In Mental Healthcare Use And Perceived Quality Between Privately Insured Lgb And Heterosexual Individuals In The United States, Yuki Hayashi
Public Health Theses
Previous research has identified significantly heightened levels of mental health issues and psychological distress among lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) individuals in the U.S., as well as greater mental health service utilization among this population. Using a nationally representative sample of privately insured adults in the U.S., we investigate differences in mental healthcare utilization, characteristics of mental healthcare received, and perceived quality of care between LGB and heterosexual individuals. Key results find that privately insured LGB men and women are significantly more likely than their heterosexual counterparts to have used outpatient mental healthcare as well as out-of-network (OON) outpatient mental …

Could The Benefits Of The Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program Be Retroactively Curtailed?, Gregory S. Crespi
Could The Benefits Of The Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program Be Retroactively Curtailed?, Gregory S. Crespi
Faculty Journal Articles and Book Chapters
There is a sharp tension between the expectations that hundreds of thousands to millions of persons have or will have regarding their right to have their federal student loan debts forgiven under the Public Service Loan Forgiveness (“PSLF”) program and the legitimate public concerns regarding the large costs and regressive incidence of the PSLF program’s benefits. In 2017, the Trump Administration proposed abolishing the PSLF program for future federal Direct Loans, but this proposal was not adopted. A similar proposal was made in 2019 as part of the Administration’s fiscal 2020 budget proposal, with little chance of adoption. But given …
Attention To Retention: Implications Of Institutional Practices Of Four-Year Colleges And Universities On Graduation Rates Of Students With Adhd, Paula L. Michael Dass
Attention To Retention: Implications Of Institutional Practices Of Four-Year Colleges And Universities On Graduation Rates Of Students With Adhd, Paula L. Michael Dass
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Advances in medication and support services in high schools have influenced the growing number of students with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) enrolling in colleges and universities. Unfortunately, their lower graduation rates and extended time to graduation creates multiple challenges to themselves, their institution’s, and their communities. Limited information is available regarding how disability services impact graduation rates for students with ADHD in higher education. More information is needed about how the practices instituted by disability support center leaders in post-secondary institution’s impact the graduation rates of students with ADHD. Retention, a financial and ethical concern for universities, is pushed …

Exploitation Or Empowerment? Women’S Experiences In The Cam Modeling Industry, Ekaterina Bays
Exploitation Or Empowerment? Women’S Experiences In The Cam Modeling Industry, Ekaterina Bays
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Sex work and the experiences of women within it have been studied in-depth over the past four decades. However, the majority of studies on sex work focus on women who work in prostitution, overlooking rapidly growing cam modeling industry and its female workers. Over the past ten years cam modeling has become an increasingly popular adult entertainment industry, gradually displacing traditional pornography from the online sex market (Senft 2008). In this study, I used theoretical frameworks of radical and liberal feminists as well as polymorphous paradigm to investigate if the cam modeling industry is either an empowering or an exploitative …
Occupational Therapy Students’ Perceptions Of Individuals With Mental Illness Before And After A Service-Learning Experience, Valley Mccurry
Occupational Therapy Students’ Perceptions Of Individuals With Mental Illness Before And After A Service-Learning Experience, Valley Mccurry
All ETDs from UAB
Service-learning is a pedagogical approach that allows occupational therapy students to engage in experiential learning with individuals who have mental illness. Perceptions of individuals with mental illness are influenced by factors such as societal stigma. Stigma is present among allied health professionals and students, including occupational therapy students, which may influence provision of care. In order to assess occupational therapy students’ level of comfort with the mental health population, this study used a convergent mixed methods approach to evaluate how students’ personal beliefs and self-efficacy changed after a service-learning experience at a homeless shelter. The study explored occupational therapy students’ …
A Crisis In Care: Evaluating The Causes And Consequences Of Burnout Among Emergency Physicians, Michael Allyn Wiechart
A Crisis In Care: Evaluating The Causes And Consequences Of Burnout Among Emergency Physicians, Michael Allyn Wiechart
All ETDs from UAB
For many physicians, the growing list of mandates and the unrelenting pace of change in today’s health care have taken a toll, leading to burnout. The consequences of burnout extend well beyond the impact on the individual provider, with physician burnout linked to a decrease in patient satisfaction, an increase in preventable medical errors, and increased levels of staff turnover. Consequently, the high rates of burnout reported among U.S. physicians might be considered not only as a symptom of dysfunction in the health care delivery system but also as a factor contributing to the dysfunction. While burnout exists to a …
Peruvian Medical Students' Attitudes Toward People With Disabilities, Shane Daniel Burns
Peruvian Medical Students' Attitudes Toward People With Disabilities, Shane Daniel Burns
All ETDs from UAB
Patients with disabilities often interpret health care providers’ skills and facilities inadequate, are denied health care services, and report poor treatment in the medical setting. Key stakeholders in reforming this process are medical students, a demographic that currently provides services for patients with disabilities and will shape tomorrow’s health care systems. Past research has demonstrated that medical students often hold negative attitudes toward people with disabilities with much of this research being conducted in the developed world and none in Latin America. As a result, this study pursued to understand Peruvian medical students’ attitudes toward people with disabilities and how …

An Exploration Of The Relationship Between Work Climate, The Utilization Of Support Resources, And Compassion Fatigue Level In Child Protective Investigators, Shannon Holliker
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The impact of child maltreatment is far reaching, affecting the abused child, the family system, and the professionals tasked with providing support during the moments of crisis. As child protective investigators (CPIs) provide care and support to others, they are at high risk of experiencing secondary traumatic stress and/or burnout, both aspects of compassion fatigue. Researchers suggest that work climate, utilization of resources, and worker characteristics can impact CPI compassion-fatigue level. Drawing on extant literature, this study examined three research questions and seven hypotheses aiming to explore the relationship between work climate, resource utilization, CPI characteristics, and CPI compassion-fatigue level. …
The Life Experiences Of Women With An Intellectual Disability Who Were Sexually Assaulted, Jillian Schreffler
The Life Experiences Of Women With An Intellectual Disability Who Were Sexually Assaulted, Jillian Schreffler
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The views of those with an intellectual disability (ID) on sexuality is not a topic many are willing to broach. Many challenges exist for those identified with ID when it comes to sexual education, including a lack of appropriate curricula; a lack of trained school personnel; the inability of school, state, and national stakeholders to agree on policy or curriculum content; and the generalizability of the content. These challenges are heightened by an increase in sexual assault of women with ID. To improve sexual assault prevention skills, the researcher conducted a phenomenological study to identify the current status of sexual …

Techno-Optimism & Access To The Legal System, Tanina Rostain
Techno-Optimism & Access To The Legal System, Tanina Rostain
Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works
For legal technologists, apps raise the prospect of putting the law in the hands of disadvantaged people who feel powerless to deal with their legal problems. These aspirations are heartening, but they rest on unrealistic assumptions about how people living in poverty deal with legal problems. People who are poor very rarely resort to the law to solve their problems. In the situations when they do seek solutions, they confront educational and material impediments to finding, understanding, and using online legal tools effectively. Literacy is a significant barrier. More than 15 percent of all adults living in the United States …

Using an online survey of academics at 55 randomly selected institutions across the US and Canada, we explore priorities for publishing decisions and their perceived importance within review, promotion, and tenure (RPT). We find that respondents most value journal readership, while they believe their peers most value prestige and related metrics such as impact factor when submitting their work for publication. Respondents indicated that total number of publications, number of publications per year, and journal name recognition were the most valued factors in RPT. Older and tenured respondents (most likely to serve on RPT committees) were less likely to value …
Attitudes Towards Commercial Sexual Exploitation: An Ecological Systems Approach, Rachel Small
Attitudes Towards Commercial Sexual Exploitation: An Ecological Systems Approach, Rachel Small
Open Access Dissertations
Sex trafficking is one of the largest and fastest-growing criminal enterprises in the world (Cecchet & Thoburn, 2014), and represents a systematic form of violence against women (Curva, 2012; Ekberg, 2004). Despite growing social awareness and scholarly interest in commercial sexual exploitation (CSE), it remains an underdeveloped research area, and little research has been conducted from a social-psychological standpoint. A comprehensive review of qualitative research was conducted utilizing ecological systems theory (Bronfenbrenner, 1992) as a framework for identifying major themes in the described experiences of survivors of CSE. In Study 1, emergent themes served as the basis for the development …
Impacts Of Gender-Based Violence And Harassment On Graduate Student Academic Functioning, Jennifer W. Underwood
Impacts Of Gender-Based Violence And Harassment On Graduate Student Academic Functioning, Jennifer W. Underwood
Theses and Dissertations
Researchers and practitioners have increasingly focused on institutional responses to campus gender-based violence/harassment, yet they have paid far less attention to graduate student experiences than to undergraduate student experiences. Graduate students operate in a different context from undergraduates, and therefore specific knowledge of gender-based violence/harassment in the lives of graduate students is needed. The purpose of this exploratory, nonexperimental study was to better understand the prevalence of adult gender-based violence/harassment and adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) among graduate students, as well as to understand the relationship between those experiences and participants’ mental health and academic functioning. The study’s theoretical framework combined …
Assessment Of “Meaning Made”: An Empirical Examination Of Factorial Structure And Measure Validity, Andrea M. Despotes
Assessment Of “Meaning Made”: An Empirical Examination Of Factorial Structure And Measure Validity, Andrea M. Despotes
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
Meaning-making theory posits that appraisal of a stressful event leads to distress if it is discrepant with one’s sense of “global meaning,” and such distress stimulates meaning-making processes aimed at eliminating the discrepancy. If meaning making leads to new meaning (i.e., “meaning made”), the stress-induced discrepancy is reduced, which generally is expected to result in positive adjustment. This study investigated the factorial structure of the meaning made construct using a sample (N = 372) of Amazon Mechanical Turk workers in the United States having “Masters” status and a minimum approval rating of 95%. Participants reported an average age of about …
Examining Political Discourse On A Crafting Website, Laura Steibel O'Brien
Examining Political Discourse On A Crafting Website, Laura Steibel O'Brien
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
Websites dedicated to leisure pursuits are often used to connect with others over a shared interest. Some allow and encourage participants to engage in discussion. This project examined the ways that one crafting website, Ravelry, attempts to maintain civil discourse among its users, as opposed to the sometimes hostile and aggressive interactions found on other sites. The study looked at its discussion moderation practices as its users discussed politics and then analyzed how this related to community norms and practices of civil public discourse. Discourse analysis of words, phrases, and interactions within representative discussion threads suggest that while Ravelry’s guidelines …
A Child Shall Lead Them: Exploring Discourses Of Efficacy And Climate Change As They Appear In Children's Animated Film, Jason Derry
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Recent climate change discourse has tended to presume scientific knowledge and rational argumentation as the principle factor in convincing peoples and publics toward climate action. However, scholarship across numerous fields reveals myriad other contributing factors in how people think about and respond to this environmental crisis, which leans predominately toward silence and apathy. Alongside this, children are often centered as inheriting a calamity, yet find themselves largely disempowered. From out of this rhetorical milieu I interject by way of a multidisciplinary grounding to examine the predominate framings of efficacy in the context of children, climate change, and environmental discourse. To …
