Living To Survive: Causes And Solutions To Poverty Among Low Income, White, Single Mothers, Sabrina Mikes Jan 2019

Living To Survive: Causes And Solutions To Poverty Among Low Income, White, Single Mothers, Sabrina Mikes

Theses & ETDs

The purpose of this study is to understand the causes and solutions to poverty among, low-income, white, single mothers from their perspective. I conducted five in-depth interviews with mothers about their experiences, struggles, needs and perspectives regarding poverty and ultimately the solutions they envision to alleviate it. Building from previous research about the causes of poverty, I use the framework of an individual, cultural, and structural lens to examine these causes and solutions. Through analysis on the five, qualitative interviews with the mothers, I found that bad partners and divorce, the responsibilities and roles of single motherhood, low quality jobs, …

Attention And Autonomic Function: The Relationship Between Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome And Adhd, Margaret Joan Owens Jan 2019

Attention And Autonomic Function: The Relationship Between Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome And Adhd, Margaret Joan Owens

Theses & ETDs

Cognitive impairment is one of the most common symptoms of Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS), and frequently one of the more disabling ones as well. The symptoms of cognitive dysfunction found in POTS patients tends to be remarkably similar to those found in Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Little to no research has investigated the role of attentional difficulties in POTS patients, let alone rates of ADHD diagnosis. This study investigates ADHD diagnosis prevalence in adult POTS patients, as well as prevalence of Inattentive, Hyperactive, and Sensory Processing symptoms. A survey was conducted of 146 POTS patients via SurveyMonkey. The results …

Menstruating And Doing Masc: Trans Experiences Of Menstruation, Emily Via Jan 2019

Menstruating And Doing Masc: Trans Experiences Of Menstruation, Emily Via

Theses & ETDs

This thesis explores menstruation as a gendered, embodied act looking specifically at transgender people who menstruate. Though scholars have studied women’s experiences of menstruation as gendered, little has been written on the experiences of transgender people who menstruate and the attitudes they have toward menstruation. In this project, I asked how trans people navigate menstruation, which is socially coded as feminine, alongside their non-female gender identities. I conducted loosely-structured, in-depth interviews with seven assigned-female-at-birth trans people asking about their lifelong experience with and narratives of menstruation. I found that my participants expressed discomfort with narratives of womanhood associated with menarche, …

Fill The Earth And Subdue It: Evangelicals, Environmentalism, And Religious Divides, James Spencer Powell Jan 2019

Fill The Earth And Subdue It: Evangelicals, Environmentalism, And Religious Divides, James Spencer Powell

Theses & ETDs

Christianity contains numerous ecotheologies that present humans as the epitome of creation, but also instruct them to care for the Earth. While Christian environmental organizations have flourished over the past few decades, studies have consistently linked belief in Christianity and Evangelicalism in particular to negative environmental ethics and lack of support for environmental regulation. Numerous explanations for Evangelical’s aversion to environmentalism have been explored and tested such as biblical literalism, religiosity, morality, eschatology, and political conservatism with different explanations ultimately resulting. This led me to explore what aspects of Christianity are responsible for these environmental ethics by studying the social …

Taiwan Is Giving Buddhism Back To The Living: A Study Of The Four Great Mountains Of Buddhism In Taiwan With A Focus On Fo Guang Shan, Lorelei Domke

Theses & ETDs

The Buddhist reform movement navigated through the muddy past of political and social upheaval in China and Taiwan; ultimately leading to a beautiful lotus blossoming: Buddhist modernism. Buddhist modernism, as described by David McMahan, has established strong influential roots in Taiwan through Humanistic Buddhism and socially engaged Buddhism. Fo Guang Shan (FGS), Tzu Chi, Dharma Drum Mountain (DDM), and Chung Tai Shan are the “Four Great Mountains” that are at the forefront of modern Buddhism in Taiwan. Each has ties to the core mission of Humanistic and socially engaged Buddhism. FGS is a Humanistic Buddhist organization that will be the …

Maternal Health Interventions In Rural, Resource-Limited Countries, Katherine Tilton Jan 2019

Maternal Health Interventions In Rural, Resource-Limited Countries, Katherine Tilton

Theses and Graduate Projects

Pregnant women are continuing to die at unacceptable rates around the globe. According to the World Health Organization, complications during pregnancy and childbirth are the leading cause of death and disability among reproductive age women in developing countries. Maternal mortality is often a reflection of a combination of causes: medical conditions while giving birth (ie. hemorrhage, eclampsia, and sepsis); other pre-existing medical conditions (ie. malaria, diabetes, HIV/AIDS); and socio-economic factors (ie. access to contraception, religious beliefs, and political agendas) that when combined, largely compromise health care, most often in the poor, rural and marginalized communities. Nearly all maternal deaths (99%) …

Ethical Patient Care Overview For Doctoral Nursing Students, Courtney Reinisch Jan 2019

Ethical Patient Care Overview For Doctoral Nursing Students, Courtney Reinisch

School of Nursing Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Clinical care is guided by knowledge, competency, and the maintenance of ethical standards. Maintenance of ethical standards is necessary by all care providers across disciplines. Attention should be paid to the following ethical tenets: autonomy, beneficence, non-malfeasance, justice, veracity, and confidentiality. Avoiding paternalism is a goal for providers to optimize outcomes for individuals and families. Providers who demonstrate a thorough understanding of ethical principles best serve individuals, communities, and populations by strengthening trust with adherence to ethical standards.

The American Dream And The Filipino College Student, Angelo Gabriel G. Baldado Jan 2019

The American Dream And The Filipino College Student, Angelo Gabriel G. Baldado

Honors Undergraduate Theses

The American Dream Ideology is defined by Sociologist, Jennifer Hochschild as, "All persons in the United States can achieve the American Dream, which is defined as the achievement of success however that is defined to oneself, through hard work and one's own efforts." Filipino Americans have a unique history with the United States and much of Filipino culture has roots within its history of colonization by Spain and the United States. Previous research has shown a high consistent rate of immigration into the United States, and high rates of social mobility among second-generation Asian immigrants compared to first-generation Asian immigrants. …

Honors Undergraduate Theses

With the vast and continued growth of international students in the U.S., it is important to focus on this expanding group and identify factors that aid or hinder academic performance, achievement, expectations, and competence. Factors known to affect academics among international students, such as language barriers, acculturation to American society, university support and structure, social integration at the university, family support, and motivating factors to study in the U.S were examined. It was hypothesized that these known factors would negatively correlate with the academic outcomes of international students examined in the current study. It was also hypothesized that these factors …

The Effect Of Family And Social Support On Suicidal Ideation In Jails, Megan L. Small Jan 2019

The Effect Of Family And Social Support On Suicidal Ideation In Jails, Megan L. Small

Honors Undergraduate Theses

Suicidal ideation and associated behaviors are up to four times more common among jail inmates than the general community (Jenkins et al., 2005; Hayes, 1986). Research finds a variety of social, biological, and psychological factors interact to influence suicidal thoughts of incarcerated individuals (Bonner, 1992; Borrill et al., 2005). Particularly, psychological distress such as, depression and feelings of hopelessness, along with loss of social support and decreased feelings of connectedness have been linked to suicidal ideation and behaviors (Moscicki, 1997; Hawton & van Heeringen, 2009). Recently, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (2017) has emphasized the importance of connectedness …

Exploring The Loss And Disenfranchised Grief Of Animal Care Workers., Benjamin Marton, Teresa Kilbane, Holly Nelson-Becker

Social Work: School of Social Work Faculty Publications and Other Works

This article explores the psychological distress of Animal Care Workers (ACWs), and the disenfranchisement of this distress through mixed methods study conducted as an online survey. In all, 139 participants responded about their experiences as an ACW, related psychological distress, and the systemic disenfranchisement of distress. Findings indicate that nearly half of ACWs experienced symptoms of depression in the previous month. Over 66% indicated it was difficult to cope. Limited support often resulted in a disenfranchized loss. Implications suggest ACW distress and disenfranchisement related to animals they serve is similar to that of individuals who lose animal companions.

Setting Research Priorities Within Allied Health: What Do Clinicians Think?, Annette Davis, Den-Ching Angel Lee, Lisa-Anabell Wenzel, Terry Haines

Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice

Background: Research activity among allied health clinicians working in publicly funded health care organisations is growing, yet little attention has been paid to how these activities are prioritised. Without a specific framework to guide research direction, it is likely that research will be conducted in areas that are prioritised by individual clinicians. However, it is presently unknown what areas are prioritised by clinicians and the reasoning behind their prioritisation. Purpose: The aims of this study were to identify what clinicians identify to be the highest priority research across personal, department, and health service levels, and the reasons why. It also …

Love And Servant-Leadership, Tom Buck Jan 2019

Love And Servant-Leadership, Tom Buck

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

Parker Palmer (2000) described the world as a mixture of both shadow and light. On a grand scale, the interplay of shadow and light can be witnessed both in wars and the giving of humanitarian aid across the globe. This exchange of shadow and light can also be experienced in local communities through the existence of poverty and depression, as well as volunteerism and charitable giving. While there are examples of famous leaders who inspired large movements towards great change, these leaders are famous and notable precisely because they are the exception, rather than the rule. Most leaders will not …
