A Needs-Based Partial Theory Of Human Injustice: Oppression, Dehumanization, Exploitation, And Systematic Inequality In Opportunities To Address Human Needs, Michael A. Dover Jan 2019

A Needs-Based Partial Theory Of Human Injustice: Oppression, Dehumanization, Exploitation, And Systematic Inequality In Opportunities To Address Human Needs, Michael A. Dover

Social Work Faculty Publications

The article presents an original needs-based partial theory of human injustice and shows its relationship to existing theories of human need and human liberation. The theory is based on an original typology of three social structural sources of human injustice, a partial theorization of the mechanisms of human injustice, and a needs-based theorization of the nature of human injustice, as experienced by individuals. The article makes a sociological contribution to normative social theory by clarifying the relationship of human injustice to human needs, human rights, and human liberation. The theory contends that human injustice is produced when oppression, mechanistic dehumanization, …

Reducing Test Anxiety In Pre-Licensure Nursing Students With Pet Therapy, Amy M. Richards

Creating Healthy Work Environments (CHWE)

Fingers tapping, hearts pounding, sweat on the brow, and heads bowed in prayer are common manifestations of students waiting to take an exam. The fear of failure is the basis of test anxiety (Anxiety and Depression Association, 2015). Pet therapy may reduce test anxiety in pre-licensure nursing students.

Problematic Sexual Behavior And Religion Among Adult Jewish Males: An Initial Study, David H. Rosmarin, Steven Pirutinsky Jan 2019

Problematic Sexual Behavior And Religion Among Adult Jewish Males: An Initial Study, David H. Rosmarin, Steven Pirutinsky

Graduate School of Social Work Publications and Research

A growing body of research has tied religion to problematic sexual behavior in both positive and negative ways. On the one hand, religious belief and engagement buffer against incidence and severity of problematic sexual behavior, but on the other hand religiously affiliated individuals who engage in such behavior tend to experience spiritual struggles (negative religious coping) and poor psychosocial outcomes. No published empirical studies have examined these variables among adult Jewish males. In the present study, 94 adult Jewish males completed measures of religious belief/ practice, positive religious coping, spiritual struggles, and problematic sexual behavior. General and positive aspects of …

Sociology, Social Work and Anthropology Faculty Publications

The salmonid fisheries of the Columbia River Basin (CRB) have enormous socioeconomic, cultural, and ecological importance to numerous diverse stakeholders (eg state, federal, tribal, nonprofit), and there are a wide array of opinions and perspectives on how these fisheries should be managed. Although we appreciate Duda et al.'s commentary, it offers only one perspective of many in this context. The objective of our paper (Hand et al. 2018) was to provide justification for “the importance of social–ecological perspectives when communicating conservation values and goals, and the role of independent science in guiding management policy and practice for …

Socio-Economic Status And Social Capital: A Multicausal Analysis Of Bullying Among Highschool Students In Karawang, West Jawa, Hendri Wicaksono

Masyarakat: Jurnal Sosiologi

The high number of bullying cases among students is one of the problems of education in Indonesia. Previous studies stated that socio economic status (SES), social capital, ethnicity and parenting were the factors leading to the practice of bullying in schools. Students with low SES levels more often fall victim to bullying compared to students who have high SES levels. Likewise, with social capital, students who have a low level of popularity and weak social networks are more vulnerable of bullying from their friends. In addition, victims of bullying are often students from ethnic minorities. Students who become victims of bullying …

How Radical Are The Implications Of Properzi’S Christ-Centered Perspective On Emotion For Psychology And Psychotherapy?, Jeffrey S. Reber Jan 2019

How Radical Are The Implications Of Properzi’S Christ-Centered Perspective On Emotion For Psychology And Psychotherapy?, Jeffrey S. Reber

Issues in Religion and Psychotherapy

Properzi offers a perspective on emotion that is radically different from traditional secular theories of emotion and the psychotherapy approaches associated with those theories, but perhaps his Christ- centered perspective is even more radical than he perceives it. If it is strongly theistic and strongly relational, as it appears to be, then its implications would significantly alter the psychology of emotion and psychotherapy. These implications need to be explicated so it is clear what a Christ-centered per- spective on emotion would mean to the discipline. I have fleshed out three radical implications regarding scope, relational ontology, and mastery discourse to …

Community-Engaged Teaching: Lessons From A Participatory History Project, Amie Thurber, Sarah V. Suiter Jan 2019

Community-Engaged Teaching: Lessons From A Participatory History Project, Amie Thurber, Sarah V. Suiter

School of Social Work Faculty Publications and Presentations

How can we create opportunities for students to gain experience in community-engaged scholarship that truly benefits the community given the constraints of the academic calendar, students’ varied capacity to develop reciprocal and responsive community relationships, and the tendency for community-engaged research to instrumentalize community partners in service to academic deliverables? This paper explores one attempt to meet this challenge: an experimental graduate course in community development that linked course content to a participatory history project. Designed as a Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) study, instructors studied the instructional process as well as outcomes for students and community partners. We …

The Principles Of Organizational Inaction, Roger A. Lohmann Jan 2019

The Principles Of Organizational Inaction, Roger A. Lohmann

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Organization inaction and the absence of change are seriously understudied topics. This article (a spoof) reports on a research problem that identifies and studies four principles of organizational inaction: The time, subject matter, group size and controversy theorems together and separately explain a great deal of committee and organizational inaction. The article also introduces innovative techniques of invariant statistics and mystery sampling. The article is an extensive rewrite of a 'research report' that originally appeared in a peer-reviewed administrative humor journal, The Bureaucrat, in 1979.

2019 Program & Posters

Welcome to the 2019 Walden University Research Symposium. We are glad you can join us for our first symposium in conjunction with Winter Graduation in seven years. The Research Symposium is an annual event that showcases research projects from our academic community, especially work by our recent graduates. The poster presentations provide an opportunity for researchers to engage with all individuals attending the symposium and potentially to network with other interested researchers. If there is a theme this year, beyond the shared focus on social change, it would be research aimed at understanding how to respond to the challenges that …

Adolescent Engagement In Home-Based Treatment: An Action Research Study, Krystal Finch

This study explored the clinical practice approaches, roles, and experiences used in home-based treatment to adolescents residing in a large city in the northeastern United States. Social work clinicians (N = 5) participated in a focus group to address the clinical roles, characteristics, and skills essential for reducing barriers related to adolescent engagement in home-based treatment, including the areas of competence, respect, empathy, and passion. Findings from this study included opportunities for clinicians to increase understanding of characteristics, skills, and experiences in home-based treatment, which may enhance the adolescent’s autonomy, decrease risk factors, and reduce the revolving door of treatment …
