Supporting Success For Children From Single-Parent Homes, Casey Scheuerell
Supporting Success For Children From Single-Parent Homes, Casey Scheuerell
Counselor Education Capstones
One out of every three children live in single-parent households either from birth or throughout their childhood. Evidence shows that students from single-parent homes struggle academically, socially, and behavioral due to income difficulties, time parents are spent away from the children, and lack of connection to the schools. While these issues exist, Staying in an unhealthy relationship for the child can actually be worse than terminating the relationship. Though there are difficulties, single parents find financial sustainability when they get child support or when they cohabitate with family, friends, or significant others. Counselors can assist students and families with individual …

Adolescents In Alternative Education Settings, Carly Houlihan
Counselor Education Capstones
Alternate Education Settings (AES) are public school setting that meet the needs of highly at-risk youth. Adolescents who are enrolled in an alternative education setting often also have a mental health diagnosis; this group is often under-researched. Thus, this paper focuses on adolescents in different types of alternative education settings like Montessori, behavior-focused, and credit recovery programs. This review of the research discusses the qualifications to be in an alternative education setting, interventions to use with adolescents' in these schools who also might have a mental health diagnosis and finally the separate roles a counselor plays in the clients' life. …

Developing a Creative Learning Format for Street Children
As the number of street children grow globally, governments and UN agencies are looking at solutions to cater to their needs of shelter, health and safety. Efforts to provide formal education to street children are not always successful. This project hypothesizes that equipping these children with essential knowledge in an informal but creative learning environment will allow them to live safe and productive lives. The prototype of the creative learning format is based on approaches and tools that have worked with children in other settings and has been modified for street children. …

Exploring The Experiences Of Older Chinese Immigrants And Adult Children Caregivers With Utilization Of Formal Social Services And Support, Joy Rong
2019 Spring Honors Capstone Projects - Archive
Current research has addressed the underutilization of healthcare services for chronically ill, older Chinese immigrants; yet one area of research that needs to be explored thoroughly is the experiences of both older Chinese immigrants and their adult children caregivers in a dyad. This study aimed to explore the experiences of older Chinese immigrants and their adult children caregivers with formal social services and support. Conventional content analysis was used to examine secondary data of dyad interview transcripts. The results were that four major negative aspects of service usage (language, transportation, immigration status, and inaccessibility) and two major positive aspects of …

Underutiliztion Of Hospice Amongst African Americans And Latinx, Joanna Glover
2019 Spring Honors Capstone Projects - Archive
Some older Americans, especially minorities, will either choose not to receive hospice care or will choose to receive hospice when all other treatment options have been eliminated. Some key points that are possible reasons for underutilization include: late referrals, negative associations of hospice, and cultural or religious beliefs. Qualitative interviews were conducted with 8 primary caregivers who have a loved one receiving hospice care who were either African American or Latinx. Guiding questions were asked to confirm suspected reasons or determine possible additional reasons for underutilization. The common pattern that each primary caregiver presented as a problem is the lack …

Transportation, Social Support, Family Visitation, And Depression Of Residents In Nursing Homes: A Mixed-Methods Study, Vivian J. Miller
Social Work Dissertations - Archive
The purpose of this study was to explore transportation between family members in the community to visit their loved ones residing in long-term care nursing homes. This study is presented across three articles. First, a systematic review of the literature investigating barriers to family members visiting their loved ones in nursing homes identified seven barriers to visitation, including transportation access and travel time. These findings laid the foundation for articles two and three, which report results from a larger two-phase mixed-methodological study. The second article, guided by the Social Determinants of Mental Health, is an analysis examining the effect of …

Progressive City In The Progressive Era : Child Welfare Reform In Louisville Kentucky., Mary K. Marlatt
Progressive City In The Progressive Era : Child Welfare Reform In Louisville Kentucky., Mary K. Marlatt
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Louisville, Kentucky has a unique character, never more apparent than during the period between 1890 and 1920, as the city attempted to balance traditional southern cultural ideals with northern progress. During this period, social reformers attempted to alleviate social ills exacerbated by the industrial revolution and urban crowding by advocating for social reform. This study concentrates on specific social reforms – settlement houses and missions, free kindergartens, child labor, juvenile justice, and pure milk depots – benefiting children in Louisville, and explores how those endeavors differed from those of their counterparts in the north and south. Child welfare reformers in …
The Role Of Social Supports On The Financial Toxicity Of Cancer., Lisa C. Smith
The Role Of Social Supports On The Financial Toxicity Of Cancer., Lisa C. Smith
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Although literature exists on the impact of cancer-related financial burden and its effects on quality of life, we do not have a full understanding of the nature of the financial burden on individuals and their families. Likewise, research on social support has concentrated on social, emotional, functional, and physical well-being but not on the financial well-being of individuals with cancer. The purpose of this study is to understand the role of social support in the relationship between financial toxicity and quality of life of individuals living with cancer. This research used a multiple method approach composed of two studies. Study …

"Model And Patriarch" Of Southern Settlements : Neighborhood House In Louisville, Kentucky, 1896-1939., Kalie Ann Gipson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis explores the workings of Neighborhood House, a social settlement in Louisville, Kentucky, from 1896 to 1939. It argues that Neighborhood House represented a typical settlement house that operated during the Progressive Era in the United States. From its beginnings under its founder, Archibald A. Hill, through the tenure of Frances Ingram, Neighborhood House served as an Americanizing institution for urban, European immigrants in Louisville by offering clubs and classes to both immigrant children and adults. Neighborhood House residents also mitigated between immigrant children and parents, pushed for child labor reform, and battled vice in the area. Furthermore, this …

By Proxy: A Radiocarbon Perspective On Prehistoric Mobility Using Summed Probability Distributions And Paleoenvironmental Reconstructions In Wyoming And Montana, Anastasia M. Lugo Mendez
By Proxy: A Radiocarbon Perspective On Prehistoric Mobility Using Summed Probability Distributions And Paleoenvironmental Reconstructions In Wyoming And Montana, Anastasia M. Lugo Mendez
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Stone circles are among the most common and understudied archaeological features in the Rocky Mountains and High Plains. Their widespread availability coupled with increased archaeological research accompanying oil and natural gas exploration in the region has expanded the availability and size of the region’s radiocarbon database. The dates as data approach uses radiocarbon ages as variables from a larger sample. This thesis compiles radiocarbon ages associated with tipi ring sites in Wyoming and Montana and creates a summed probability distribution from these ages to serve as a proxy for prehistoric mobility. The distribution is corrected for taphonomic bias, or data …
Optimal Foraging And Population Dynamics: An Archaeological Investigation At The Birch Creek Rockshelters, Idaho, Samuel H. M. Yeates
Optimal Foraging And Population Dynamics: An Archaeological Investigation At The Birch Creek Rockshelters, Idaho, Samuel H. M. Yeates
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
This thesis aims to integrate the study of population change with the expectations of foraging models, and to test whether expectations resulting from integrating these two bodies of theory have greater predictive power than foraging models alone. To compare these models, I monitored prey age, butchery practice, and prey desirability in five prehistoric occupations of the Birch Creek rockshelters of Idaho. I modeled hunting pressure with a human population density estimate based on radiocarbon dates from Idaho archaeological sites, and modeled prey abundance with a model of historic effective moisture. Both models predicted younger prey, lower average prey desirability, and …
Assessing Paleoenvironmental And Geomorphic Variability In Relationship To Paleoindian Site Burial; Centennial Valley, Montana, Hillary A. Jones
Assessing Paleoenvironmental And Geomorphic Variability In Relationship To Paleoindian Site Burial; Centennial Valley, Montana, Hillary A. Jones
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Wave action along the shores of Lima Reservoir in Centennial Valley, Montana is actively eroding the southern margins of three neighboring Paleoindian sites. Despite ostensible similarity among the sites, major site formation differences are apparent in exposed sediments. Shoreline cutbank exposures one-to-five meters high connect the sites and reveal a complicated geomorphic history. Although each site contains artifact evidence of terminal Pleistocene-early Holocene occupations, Paleoindian components at these three localities occur in very different contexts: one is buried, while the other two are apparent surface scatters. This raise the question of why sites of the same age are in both …

Vital Data : Writing And Circulating Data In Non-Profits., Patrick Danner
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation presents the results of an ethnographically-informed workplace observation study of a single non-profit referred to throughout as “the Metro Data Coalition” (MDC). It begins with an overview of the organization, its institutional history, the technical and technological scenes of composing, and the demands placed on the writing process by each of these variables. It considers usability studies, activity theory, and rhetorical ecologies in coming to terms with how MDC writers shape the numerical data they work with daily. The latter half of the dissertation considers how MDC writers approach their work as “storytellers,” a self-concept that is threaded …

Trauma Narratives In Mental Health Interpreting : A Qualitative Study., Miranda Hale
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Interpreting Studies has seen an increase in research in mental health, but many questions have yet to be explored. This study seeks to contribute to the literature by considering how interpreters render trauma narratives that clients share in counseling sessions. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with two interpreters who have experience in the mental health setting and one counselor who has worked extensively with interpreters. A thematic analysis of these interviews contributes to a better understanding of the interpreted interactions in this setting, with key points highlighting aspects of the setting itself, the work environment, and interpreters’ trauma awareness. It also …
Wounds And Writing : Building Trauma-Informed Approaches To Writing Pedagogy., Michelle L. Day
Wounds And Writing : Building Trauma-Informed Approaches To Writing Pedagogy., Michelle L. Day
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation builds a trauma-informed approach to writing pedagogy informed by writing studies scholarship about trauma and inclusive pedagogy, clinical social work literature on trauma-informed care, and interviews with nine current University of Louisville writing faculty about their experiences academically supporting distressed students. I identify three central touchstones—“students are coddled,” “teacher’s aren’t therapists,” and “institutions don’t support trauma-informed teaching”—in scholarly and public debates regarding what to do about student trauma/distress in higher education. After exploring the valid concerns and misconceptions underpinning these touchstones, I illustrate how clinical research offers a way forward to help writing instructors develop more complex understandings …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Mental health is an all-encompassing term that focuses on a person’s ability to achieve work-life balance inclusive of positive mental health and mental ill-health. Current trends suggest an overall increase in mental ill-health for undergraduate and graduate students. McMillan and Chavis’ sense of community theory provided the theoretical framework for this study. This study aimed to examine whether speech-language pathology graduate students’ sense of classroom community and perceived learning predict anxiety levels while controlling for demographic variables. Three-hundred-sixteen master’s level speech-language pathology students completed an online survey containing the Generalized Anxiety Disorder Questionnaire, Perceived Learning Scale, and Classroom Community Scale. …
