Development Of An Outpatient Palliative Care Protocol To Monitor Fidelity In The Emergency Medicine Palliative Care Access Trial., Corita R. Grudzen, Abigail M. Schmucker, Deborah J. Shim, Aminat Ibikunle, Jeanne Cho, Frank R. Chung, Susan E. Cohen

Student Papers, Posters & Projects

Introduction: Palliative care is recommended for patients with life-limiting illnesses; however, there are few standardized protocols for outpatient palliative care visits. To address the paucity of data, this article aims to: (1) describe the elements of outpatient palliative care that are generalizable across clinical sites; (2) achieve consensus about standardized instruments used to assess domains within outpatient palliative care; and (3) develop a protocol and intervention checklist for palliative care clinicians to document outpatient visit elements that might not normally be recorded in the electronic heath record.

Methods: As part of a randomized control trial of nurse-led telephonic case management …

The Impact Of Client's Gender And Culture On Service Providers Strategies In Diversion Programs, Stephany Betances Aug 2019

The Impact Of Client's Gender And Culture On Service Providers Strategies In Diversion Programs, Stephany Betances

Student Theses

Despite the growing rate of adolescent girls in the criminal justice system, there has been little institutional support for empirically supported programs tailored for girls (Matthews & Hubbard, 2008). There is a similar substantial lack of culturally specific programming. Problematically, both constructs have been found to impact treatment (Bright & Jonson-Reid, 2010; Matthews & Hubbard, 2008). This qualitative study utilized grounded theory principals to investigate the impact of gender and culture on the therapeutic relationship for justice-involved youth in seven alternative-to-incarceration agencies in New York City. Elicited themes focused on both recommended strategies and continued challenges. Results indicated that while …

Faith Leaders Developing Digital Literacies: Demands And Resources Across Career Stages According To Theological Educators, Kyle M. Oliver, Stacy Williams-Duncan Aug 2019

Faith Leaders Developing Digital Literacies: Demands And Resources Across Career Stages According To Theological Educators, Kyle M. Oliver, Stacy Williams-Duncan

Journal of Media Literacy Education

Despite popular framings about skills for 21st-century jobs, there are few studies of how new media literacies unfold in workplaces, nor of how professional education programs can build on adult learners’ previous experiences to foster effective digital communication practices. We argue that seminaries and divinity schools are a particularly rich context in which to explore these questions. Not only do theological education students represent an unusually wide spectrum of ages compared to graduate programs across professional education, but ministry leadership also lends itself to a sociocultural understanding of digital literacy in which past work-related interpersonal skills are likely to be …

Story Sharing In A Digital Space To Counter Othering And Foster Belonging And Curiosity Among College Students, Gina Baleria Aug 2019

Story Sharing In A Digital Space To Counter Othering And Foster Belonging And Curiosity Among College Students, Gina Baleria

Journal of Media Literacy Education

The purpose of this exploratory qualitative study was to discover how a single, relational intervention in a digital space focused on civil, respectful conversation across difference might influence digital media literacy (DML) among college students, with the goal of increasing college students’ sense of belonging and level of curiosity. The researcher used a phenomenological approach, exploring and describing the lived experiences of students who participated in a micro-engagement with an other through interviews (Creswell, 2014). This study investigated the main question: (a) How does a semi-structured, relational micro-intervention focused on civil, respectful conversation across difference influence college students’ sense of …

‘Aboriginal Community Understandings Of Dementia’, Terry Cox

Talking Heads Seminar Series

Aboriginal people and Torres Strait Islanders are impacted by dementia at higher rates and at a younger age of onset than the broader Australia population. Public health strategies to support this population require a thorough understanding of how Aboriginal people perceive dementia and dementia care support needs. Terry will explain how he has investigated Aboriginal community understandings of dementia and their responses to dementia care. He will share his collaborative research methodology, results and positive outcomes from his rural Tasmanian study.

The Importance Of Macro Practice Emphasis In Social Work Education, Nafees Alam Aug 2019

The Importance Of Macro Practice Emphasis In Social Work Education, Nafees Alam

Social Work Faculty Publications

Social work education programs across the United States continue to contend with the economic pressures of developing curricula that are financially viable in a highly competitive academic market. Fund allocation to create and develop macro programs depends on funders and donors having a close and consistent association with the institution’s environment, processes and practices. Marketing is at the forefront of organizational and institutional success. Thus, recruiting and graduating students specifically for and from the macro concentration would make for mutually beneficial relationships between students looking to maximize their career potential and programs looking to maximize their enrollment and outreach.

Staying Out: Reentry Protective Factors Among Rural Women Offenders, Michele Staton, Megan F. Dickson, Martha Tillson, J. Matthew Webster, Carl G. Leukefeld

Behavioral Science Faculty Publications

The current study examines protective factors for women who transition from county jails to rural Appalachian communities, areas with limited health and behavioral health services. The study included drug-using women recruited from three jails in rural Appalachia and followed-up at 12-months post-release. Analyses focused on differences between women who remained in the community and those who returned to custody, as well as a multivariate model to determine protective factors for reentry success. At the bivariate level, staying out of jail was associated with being older, having a job, not using drugs, stable housing, receiving health treatment, and having prosocial peers. …

The Value Of Outdoor Behavioral Healthcare For Adolescent Substance Users With Comorbid Conditions, Michael A. Gass, Thomas Wilson, Brett Talbot, Anita Reithoffer Tucker, Melissa Ugianskis, Nicholas Brennan

Faculty Publications

The damage inflicted on our society by mental health and substance use issues is reaching epidemic proportions with few signs of abating. One new and innovative strategy for addressing these comorbid issues has been the development of outdoor behavioral healthcare (OBH). This study compared the effectiveness of three post-acute adolescent substance use situations: OBH, treatment as usual (TAU), and no structured treatment (NST). The simulated target population was 13-17 years old with comorbid substance use and mental health issues. When costs were adjusted for actual completion rates of 94% in OBH, 37% in TAU, and $0 for NST, the actual …

Life Satisfaction And Healthcare Utilization Among Immigrants To The United States, Merritt Christian Rachel Harrelson Aug 2019

Life Satisfaction And Healthcare Utilization Among Immigrants To The United States, Merritt Christian Rachel Harrelson

LSU Master's Theses

Previous research suggests a relationship between life satisfaction and healthcare utilization or HCU (Habibov & Afandi, 2016; Kim, Park, Sun, Smith, & Peterson, 2014). However, no study was found that examined this relationship among elderly American immigrants. The purpose of this study was to determine whether life satisfaction is linked to HCU for this population. The researcher of the current study applied binary logistic regression to data taken from the Health and Retirement Survey to determine whether changes in life satisfaction could be linked to variance in HCU across seven domains, including hospitalization, overnight nursing home stays, doctors visits, dentist …

Do Corporate Owned Adaptive Learning Platforms Perpetuate Banking Style Learning? Integrating Technology For Activism Into Transformational Sustainability Education, Tina M. Garner Aug 2019

Do Corporate Owned Adaptive Learning Platforms Perpetuate Banking Style Learning? Integrating Technology For Activism Into Transformational Sustainability Education, Tina M. Garner

Leadership for Sustainability Education Comprehensive Papers

We live in a world that tends to be controlled by corporations. The public school system should be wary of the problems that corporate control has on education. Even though public schools should not have corporate influence, the fact remains that they do, and this perpetuates Freire's banking style learning. Through time, the corporate influence in education was through educational materials such as book sales. Since the decline of the use of books and the growth of the use of technologies, corporations have followed suit through the sales of Adaptive Learning Platforms. Through leveraging the technology which students enjoy using, …

Professional Interaction In Mental Health Courts: Processing Defendants With Mental Illness, Monte D. Staton Aug 2019

Professional Interaction In Mental Health Courts: Processing Defendants With Mental Illness, Monte D. Staton

The Qualitative Report

In this paper, the author presents ethnographic research and analysis of how criminal justice and mental health professionals interact with each other and with criminal defendants with mental illness in running a mental health court (MHC) program. Ethnographic field research included observations of court programs, interviews of professionals, and gathering of textual documents, at nine MHCs in a Midwestern state. In MHC criminal defendants with mental illness participate in a program of regular court appearances, probation supervision, and mandated treatment, rather than being incarcerated in jail or prison. The author utilized the symbolic interaction perspective and examined how the professionals …

Addressing The Health Needs Of Patients Diagnosed With A Chronic Disease In A Rural Alberta, Canada Primary Care Setting, Samantha J. Hesterman Aug 2019

Addressing The Health Needs Of Patients Diagnosed With A Chronic Disease In A Rural Alberta, Canada Primary Care Setting, Samantha J. Hesterman

Counseling

This comprehensive literature review presents findings associated with the need for more mental health support in rural Alberta. Integrated care with a behavioral health consultant (BHC) presents as a possible solution. Peer-reviewed literature indicates that rural residents are at a higher risk of suicide, substance abuse, depression, and other serious mental health concerns. They are often at a disadvantage when trying to access mental health support, and over 40% of patients with mental health needs will first seek treatment in a primary care setting. Positive mental health and positive health care outcomes are strongly linked to an individual’s total health, …

Learning To Work And Think For Life, Elizabeth Sprankle Aug 2019

Learning To Work And Think For Life, Elizabeth Sprankle

Justice

This paper explores literature related to the use of restorative discipline and restorative practices in school communities. It draws heavily on the ideas presented in Ron and Roxanne Claassens’ book, Discipline that Restores, in order to illustrate why students, staff, administrators, families and the community connected to a traditional public high school, such as West Valley High School, in Fairbanks, Alaska, would benefit from shifting to a restorative approach to discipline. The paper also examines numerous sources to demonstrate why embedding lessons related to social justice and restorative practices into content areas is logical and beneficial and attainable and that …

The Looking Glass Effect: The Influences Of Clinical Supervision On Student Attitudes Toward Evidence Based Practices, Hugh D. Leonard Aug 2019

The Looking Glass Effect: The Influences Of Clinical Supervision On Student Attitudes Toward Evidence Based Practices, Hugh D. Leonard

Psychology

The current study explored how graduate students' attitudes toward evidence-based practices (EBPs) are influenced through clinical supervision. Despite being widely endorsed by professional entities, such as the American Psychological Association, members of the profession have mixed attitudes toward the EBP approach. Mixed attitudes toward EBPs have potentially detrimental effects, such as resulting in clinicians simply dismissing the notion of evidence-based treatment decision making and instead utilizing interventions that are without scientific support and potentially ineffective and even harmful. Resistance toward EBPs has been studied, but largely unstudied is how negative attitudes toward EBPs are developed and propagated to others. Professional …

Needed Specialists For A Challenging Task: Formerly Incarcerated Leaders’ Essential Role In Postsecondary Programs In Prison, Samuel Arroyo Edd, Jorge Diaz, Lila Mcdowell Phd

Journal of Prison Education and Reentry (2014-2023)

U.S. President Lyndon B. Johnson’s 1967 Commission on Law Enforcement and Administration of Justice called for a massive increase in teachers prepared to assist in the delivery of academic programs for incarcerated people. “Substantial subsidies are needed to recruit needed specialists,” they wrote, “and to provide them with the training required to make them effective in their complex and challenging task.” Half a century later, the persistent educational deficits and need for empowering postsecondary academic programs in prisons across the United States and the world are being addressed by a wide range of responses from specialists in higher education, corrections, …

"People Like Me Don’T Belong In Places Like This." Creating And Developing A Community Of Learners Beyond The Prison Gates, Helena J. Gosling Dr, Lawrence Burke

Journal of Prison Education and Reentry (2014-2023)

It is widely accepted that individuals with criminal convictions experience multiple disadvantage and deprivation, and, as a result, are considered least likely to progress to higher education (Unlock, 2018). The risk-adverse nature of higher education application processes further compound such disadvantage, even though there is no evidence to suggest that screening for criminal convictions increase campus safety (Centre for Community Alternatives, 2010). Drawing upon ethnographic data, the discussion critically reflects upon the development of one situated Learning Together initiative based within a University in the north-west of England. In doing so, the discussion highlights a series of emerging opportunities and …
