How Adolescents Use Text Messaging Through Their High School Years, Samuel E. Ehrenreich, Kurt J. Beron, Kaitlyn Burnell, Diana J. Meter, Marion K. Underwood

Human Development and Family Studies Faculty Publications

Co‐construction theory suggests adolescents use digital communication to address developmental challenges. For a sample of 214 ethnically diverse adolescents, this research used direct observation to investigate the frequency, content, and timing of texting with parents, peers, and romantic partners through grades 9–12. Analyses showed that texting frequency follows a curvilinear trajectory, peaking in eleventh grade. Adolescents discussed a range of topics, predominantly with peers. Communication with parents was less frequent, but consistent over time. Approximately 45‐65% of adolescents communicated with romantic partners, texting heavily and about topics similar to those discussed with peers. Texting may help adolescents navigate key developmental …

China-Eu Bit And Fta: Building A Bridge On The Silk Road Not Detoured By Labor Standard Provisions, Ronald C. Brown Dec 2019

China-Eu Bit And Fta: Building A Bridge On The Silk Road Not Detoured By Labor Standard Provisions, Ronald C. Brown

Washington International Law Journal

It is time for European Union and Chinese leaders to build on the existing EU-China 2020 Strategic Agenda for Cooperation, quickly conclude on-going negotiations on their EU-China Bilateral Investment Treaty, and begin substantive negotiations on an EU-China Free Trade Agreement? China is now the European Union's second-biggest trading partner behind the United States, and the European Union is China's biggest trading partner. China is reaching to become the leader in globalism and is investing heavily to make it happen. One of the world’s largest projects, the Belt and Road Initiative is a primary driver of China's larger development strategy. A …

Foreword, Casey Yamasaki

Washington International Law Journal

This issue begins with Paul B. Larsen's analysis on the international interests in space law and the need for a legal order to regulate the "final frontier." Following, Ronald C. Brown compares the different approaches in free trade agreements, particularly regarding labor standards, that may optimize the benefits of the Belt and Road Initiative ("BRI"). Weixia Gu also analyzes best practices in lieu of the BRI and offers insight on different approaches to arb-med-arb dispute resolution policies. Next, Satya T. Mouland examines how adjuciative jurisdiction may be utilized as a means of enforcement in international law. Finally, the issue orbits …

Rethinking Adjudicative Jurisdiction In International Law, Satya T. Mouland Dec 2019

Rethinking Adjudicative Jurisdiction In International Law, Satya T. Mouland

Washington International Law Journal

The contribution of national courts to international law has long been doubted in the international law literature. As an aspect of the state’s power to prescribe, courts have been conceived as organs that merely apply the state’s laws, which may give effect to an international law norm. According to this conception, national courts merely apply and operate within the state’s national legal system and rarely have a direct contribution to international law. However, in enforcement proceedings for international arbitral awards, arising at the intersection between the law of state immunity and the law governing the enforcement of arbitral awards, a …

Potentially Electric: An E-Textiles Project As A Model For Teaching Electric Potential, Doug Ball, Colby Tofel-Grehl

Teacher Education and Leadership Faculty Publications

Electric potential is one of the most challenging concepts taught in high school physics classes due to the abstract nature of the concept.1 When taught, electric potential is often taught using a poorly triangulated set of instructional analogies, each possessing different strengths and limitations. Within this paper we share our learning from a two-week electronic textiles (e-textiles) unit designed to help students in an AP high school physics course improve their understanding of electric potential through the construction of a project entitled “The Slouching T-shirt” (STS) (Fig. 1). The STS project was part of a larger instructional unit on …

Maxwell H. Gluck Equine Research Center Faculty Publications

Background: Aminorex, (RS)-5- Phenyl-4,5-dihydro-1,3-oxazol-2-amine, is an amphetamine-like anorectic and in the United States a Drug Enforcement Administration [DEA] Schedule 1 controlled substance. Aminorex in horse urine is usually present as a metabolite of Levamisole, an equine anthelmintic and immune stimulant. Recently, Aminorex identifications have been reported in horse urine with no history or evidence of Levamisole administration. Analysis of the urine samples suggested a botanical source, directing attention to the Brassicaceae plant family, with their contained GlucoBarbarin and Barbarin as possible sources of Aminorex. Since horsepersons face up to a 1 year suspension and a $10,000.00 fine for an Aminorex …

Past, Present, And Future Of Intellectual Property In Space: Old Answers To New Questions, Rosario Avveduto

Washington International Law Journal

This comment critically analyzes international space law in the context of intellectual property. The issues explored, current and future, are at the crossroads of the international space legal framework and U.S. intellectual property law. The first stage of the analysis includes a brief history of space law, introducing the U.N. treaties on space activities and taking a hard look at the founding principles they enshrine. An analytical overview of the International Space Station Agreement follows, introducing the present application of space law to issues of intellectual property. This overview further considers the fundamental principles of U.S. intellectual property, especially patent …

Snowpack Properties Vary In Response To Burn Severity Gradients In Montane Forests, Jordan Maxwell, Samuel B. St. Clair Dec 2019

Snowpack Properties Vary In Response To Burn Severity Gradients In Montane Forests, Jordan Maxwell, Samuel B. St. Clair

Aspen Bibliography

Wildfires are altering ecosystems globally as they change in frequency, size, and severity. As wildfires change vegetation structure, they also alter moisture inputs and energy fluxes which influence snowpack and hydrology. In unburned forests, snow has been shown to accumulate more in small clearings or in stands with low to moderate forest densities. Here we investigate whether peak snowpack varies with burn severity or percent overstory tree mortality post-fire in a mid-latitude, subalpine forest. We found that peak snowpack across the burn severity gradients increased 15% in snow-water equivalence (SWE) and 17% in depth for every 20% increase in overstory …

Hybrid Dispute Resolution Beyond The Belt And Road: Toward A New Design Of Chinese Arb-Med(-Arb) And Its Global Implications, Weixia Gu Dec 2019

Hybrid Dispute Resolution Beyond The Belt And Road: Toward A New Design Of Chinese Arb-Med(-Arb) And Its Global Implications, Weixia Gu

Washington International Law Journal

Arb-med is a form of hybrid dispute resolution that combines an adjudicative approach (arbitration) with a non-adjudicative approach (mediation). Dispute resolution clauses requiring arb-med will assume a popular role in resolving disputes that arise under China’s Belt and Road Initiative. This article argues that China should regulate arb-med in a way to reconcile local practices (mediation) with international expectations (arbitration) in context of the BRI. As an economic bloc proposed by China, the BRI development has the potential to promote dispute resolution means with Chinese characteristics such as arb-med. Global comparative study of leading arbitration jurisdictions in the East and …

The First Primary: Why New Hampshire?, David W. Moore, Andrew Smith

Carsey Publications

In this brief, authors David Moore and Andrew Smith describe the origin of the New Hampshire presidential primary and the Iowa presidential caucuses. The developments by which these two small states came to hold the first nominating contests every four years were accidental, generated by a variety of events not at all intended to educate future leaders and certainly not adopted with any expectation that these states would emerge with the enormous influence that comes with being first. But once Iowa and New Hampshire were first, and once they realized the extensive benefits the position brought to them, their leaders …

Outer Space: How Shall The World's Governments Establish Order Among Competing Interests?, Paul B. Larsen

Washington International Law Journal

We are in a period of transition in outer space; it is becoming increasingly congested. As one example, small satellites are beginning to interfer with astronomical observations. The objective of this article is to examine and evaluate how the various outer space interests interact, coordinate or conflict with each other. This article examines legal order options and the consequences of choosing among those options.

A Compendium Of Core Lexicon Checklists, Sarah Grace Dalton, Hana Kim, Jessica D. Richardson, Heather Harris Wright

Speech Pathology and Audiology Faculty Research and Publications

Core Lexicon (CoreLex) is a relatively new approach assessing lexical use in discourse. CoreLex examines the specific lexical items used to tell a story, or how typical lexical items are compared with a normative sample. This method has great potential for clinical utilization because CoreLex measures are fast, easy to administer, and correlate with microlinguistic and macrolinguistic discourse measures. The purpose of this article is to provide clinicians with a centralized resource for currently available CoreLex checklists, including information regarding development, norms, and guidelines for use.

Moving Toward Non-Transcription Based Discourse Analysis In Stable And Progressive Aphasia, Sarah Grace Dalton, H. Isabel Hubbard, Jessica D. Richardson

Speech Pathology and Audiology Faculty Research and Publications

Measurement of communication ability at the discourse level holds promise for predicting how well persons with stable (e.g., stroke-induced), or progressive aphasia navigate everyday communicative interactions. However, barriers to the clinical utilization of discourse measures have persisted. Recent advancements in the standardization of elicitation protocols and the existence of large databases for development of normative references have begun to address some of these barriers. Still, time remains a consistently reported barrier by clinicians. Non-transcription based discourse measurement would reduce the time required for discourse analysis, making clinical utilization a reality. The purpose of this article is to present evidence regarding …

Antimicrobial Peptide Identification Using Multi-Scale Convolutional Network, Xin Su, Jing Xu, Yanbin Yin, Xiongwen Quan, Han Zhang

Department of Food Science and Technology: Faculty Publications

Background: Antibiotic resistance has become an increasingly serious problem in the past decades. As an alternative choice, antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) have attracted lots of attention. To identify new AMPs, machine learning methods have been commonly used. More recently, some deep learning methods have also been applied to this problem.

Results: In this paper, we designed a deep learning model to identify AMP sequences. We employed the embedding layer and the multi-scale convolutional network in our model. The multi-scale convolutional network, which contains multiple convolutional layers of varying filter lengths, could utilize all latent features captured by the multiple convolutional layers. …
