The Rapid Advancement Of Dubai's Transportation System In The 21st Century, Jaclyn Welch Dec 2019

The Rapid Advancement Of Dubai's Transportation System In The 21st Century, Jaclyn Welch

Student Research Symposium (SRS)

The advancement of Dubai’s transportation system over the last two decades is regarded as being at the forefront of technological advancements, focusing mainly on the driver-less train system, efficient traffic flow, strict, safety-focused taxi regulations and promises of drone taxis. Such swift developments provide an opportunity for research into how these developments were made possible and how accessible and user friendly this system is for tourists. Answering this question could provide a blueprint for developing cities focusing on tourism to maximize efficiency when planning their transportation systems “from scratch” in the same manner as Dubai.

This research utilized field observations, …

Winning Public Hearts And Minds: Security And Development Aid In The 21st Century, Mohammad Ashraf Dec 2019

Winning Public Hearts And Minds: Security And Development Aid In The 21st Century, Mohammad Ashraf

Dissertations

In the aftermath of the September 11, 2001 attacks against the United States, foreign aid has focused on winning public hearts and minds in the aid recipient states as a hedge against insecurity and means to achieve progress in the “war on terror.” Western donors, especially the United States, argue foreign aid is an effective tool to expand government capacity and control over territory, win public hearts and minds, and ultimately mitigate the need and significant military costs of deployment to counter insecurity, extremism, and terrorism in weak, fragile and failing states.

This dissertation uses case studies to explore the …

In the face of a global climate emergency, community parks & recreation and land management agencies are beginning to adopt a critical role in the fight against climate change. This study gathered information on efforts around the world and created a case study guide to examine the climate change mitigation and adaptation strategies of East Bay Regional Park District in the San Francisco Bay Area of California in the United States. The study was conducted in hopes of shedding light on how small agencies can be proactive and contribute to larger efforts, creating greater regional impacts.

Brownfields Area-Wide Plan: Lower North Delaware Industrial District, Philadelphia, Mahbubur Meenar, Lynn Mandarano, Andrew Goodman, Sally Harrison Dec 2019

Brownfields Area-Wide Plan: Lower North Delaware Industrial District, Philadelphia, Mahbubur Meenar, Lynn Mandarano, Andrew Goodman, Sally Harrison

School of Earth & Environment Departmental Research

A Brownfields Area-Wide Plan is created for a key portion of Philadelphia’s Lower North Delaware Industrial District. The brownfields challenges in the project are representative of both location-specific factors and issues typical of brownfield redevelopment. One hundred and fifty years of industrial history, from coal to textile or food distribution, cannot help but leave a trace. Locational factors including high vacancy rates, weak market forces, and former industrial uses highlight the classic brownfields challenges of financial barriers, liability issues, and cleanup considerations. The coalescence of these types of difficulties significantly impacts the economic, social, public health, and environmental justice concerns …

Glorious Revolution To American Revolution: The English Origin Of The Right To Keep And Bear Arms, Diarmuid F. O'Scannlain Dec 2019

Glorious Revolution To American Revolution: The English Origin Of The Right To Keep And Bear Arms, Diarmuid F. O'Scannlain

Notre Dame Law Review

It is definitively not my intention to wade into such debates about the wisdom of the Second Amendment or to deal with pending or recent court interpretations. Rather, I want to explore how it came to be and what role British history had in its genesis. For Americans like myself, such history helps us to understand the meaning of our own Constitution. For the Britons, it is a powerful example of how your own constitutional principles shaped the legal landscape of far-flung countries once within the British Empire. And for those simply interested in law as a discipline, irrespective of …

Evaluation Of The Structural Performance Of Bridge Mse Retaining Walls, Zaid Sm Momani Dec 2019

Evaluation Of The Structural Performance Of Bridge Mse Retaining Walls, Zaid Sm Momani

Civil Engineering Dissertations - Archive

Mechanically Stabilized Earth (MSE) walls have been used extensively since the first MSE wall constructed in California in the early 70’s. MSE walls proved that they are reliable, cost-effective, aesthetically pleasing, and easily constructible. However, the design criteria of an MSE wall does not always incorporate the comprehensive behavior. A reasonable number of MSE walls do not perform as expected; a few experienced catastrophic failure. The current study was inspired by multiple MSE walls showing excessive movement of the precast panels in Fort Worth and Hurst, Texas. Three most critical MSE walls were selected for this study. The main focus …

Addiction-Informed Immigration Reform, Rebecca Sharpless Dec 2019

Addiction-Informed Immigration Reform, Rebecca Sharpless

Washington Law Review

Immigration law fails to align with the contemporary understanding of substance addiction as a medical condition. The Immigration and Nationality Act regards noncitizens who suffer from drug or alcohol substance use disorder as immoral and undesirable. Addiction is a ground of exclusion and deportation and can prevent the finding of “good moral character” needed for certain immigration applications. Substance use disorder can lead to criminal behavior that lands noncitizens, including lawful permanent residents, in removal proceedings with no defense. The time has come for immigration law to catch up to today’s understanding of addiction. The damage done by failing to …

Mansfield Integration Incident: A Mini Unit On School Desegregation And Social Justice & Resources, David Mabry

K-12 Teacher African American History Research Grant Program 2019

This mini-unit contains lesson plans that were designed to give a local connection to students studying the desegregation of schools following the historic Brown v Board of Education decision on 1955. The incident in Mansfield was significant in the fact that the governor of the state used state law enforcement officers to ensure African-American students did not register for the new school year at Mansfield High School. These plans included a variety of activities to understand the struggle for equality of education and its importance in overcoming Jim Crow legislation throughout the South. the construction of a timeline for desegregation …

Promoting Youth Competence Through Balanced And Restorative Justice: A Community-Based Pyd Approach, Rebecca Dillard, Tarkington Newman, Melissa Kim Dec 2019

Promoting Youth Competence Through Balanced And Restorative Justice: A Community-Based Pyd Approach, Rebecca Dillard, Tarkington Newman, Melissa Kim

Journal of Youth Development

As responses to first-time, nonviolent juvenile offenders move towards community-based restorative justice, approaches such as the Balanced and Restorative Justice (BARJ) Model are prominent. The BARJ Model engages the youth offender, offense victim(s), and community in which the offense occurred with three associated goals: accountability, community safety, and competency development. However, while the goals of accountability and community safety are often prioritized, many community-based restorative justice programs neglect the goal of competency development, which is ultimately a disservice not only to the youth offender, but to the community. To interrupt the cyclical nature of juvenile offending and support the long-term …

Midblock Crash Analysis Using Short Segments And Precisely Geocoded Crashes, Adika Iqbal Dec 2019

Midblock Crash Analysis Using Short Segments And Precisely Geocoded Crashes, Adika Iqbal

All Dissertations

This research focused on evaluating how crash geocoding has improved over the years and how this enhanced spatial accuracy of crashes can potentially lead to a new paradigm for midblock crash safety analysis. Robust midblock safety analysis exhibits special challenges because methods of locating crashes have historically not been very accurate. One objective of this research was to assess how the accuracy of crashes has improved over time and what the current state of the art is.

The second objective focused on using segment lengths less than the Highway Safety Manual (HSM) recommended minimum of 0.1 miles for statewide screening …
