Mass Evacuation Effects On Transportation: A Comparative Analysis, Emily M. Jannace Jul 2019

Mass Evacuation Effects On Transportation: A Comparative Analysis, Emily M. Jannace

Beyond: Undergraduate Research Journal

Mass evacuations have changed greatly in the past two decades. Evacuations such as Louisiana during Hurricane Katrina, Florida during Hurricane Irma, and New York during the 9/11 Terrorist Attacks, Hurricane Sandy, and Hurricane Irene have had significant impacts on future mass evacuations in terms of transportation. This paper takes these methods and analyzes the best approach in given situations based on volume capacity, impact, and cost to make recommendations that can be used by the three previously mention municipalities. With so many different techniques available, it is important to choose the one that moves the most people out of harm’s …

Taking Flight: Developing Leaders for the Common Good

With unprecedented levels of distress (anxiety, stress, depression, etc.) negatively impacting students’ academic performance, their ability to carry out daily activities, and their capacity to engage in meaningful relationships, the University of Dayton developed the UD Step Care Model, a visual tool to empower all members of the community to shift the culture of resiliency. The comprehensive approach to destigmatizing mental health challenges, promoting the dignity of all members of our communities, and educating students on self-help strategies reflects a holistic approach to mental health and empowers faculty and staff to guide students through conversation to broaden the perspective of …

Designing A Curriculum In Active Shooter Behavioral Indicators For Students In Institutions Of Higher Education In The State Of New Jersey, David J. Sierotowicz Jul 2019

Designing A Curriculum In Active Shooter Behavioral Indicators For Students In Institutions Of Higher Education In The State Of New Jersey, David J. Sierotowicz

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

The research in this study was conducted to explore proactive preventative measures to address the increasingly violent problem of active shooter scenarios for institutions of higher education within the State of New Jersey. Colleges and universities pose a unique threat when assessing risk factors, as these venues are open and, as a result, do not afford substantial protection against a violent assailant. The State of New Jersey has traditionally embraced a reactionary model of response, learning from past incidents and adjusting necessitated tactics accordingly. Active shooter training has become commonplace on college campuses in the State of New Jersey, and …

Devil Take The Hindmost: Reform Considerations For States With A Constitutional Right To Bail, Jordan Gross Jul 2019

Devil Take The Hindmost: Reform Considerations For States With A Constitutional Right To Bail, Jordan Gross

Akron Law Review

There is no federal constitutional right to bail. This means the question of who is bailable in state court is left entirely to state law. Most original state constitutions guaranteed that “all persons shall be bailable by sufficient sureties,” except those charged with a narrow category of serious offenses (typically capital crimes). This traditional right to bail is categorical – if an accused is charged with a bailable offense, the trial court must set bail, and it must release the accused if he, or someone on his behalf, posts bail. The trial court can impose conditions of release, including requiring …

Nonprofit Governance: The Basics, Lawrence J. Trautman, Janet Ford

Akron Law Review

Nonprofit organizations are prevalent in today’s economy, and many are governed by individuals who have been chosen on the basis of their advocacy of or contributions to various nonprofit causes rather than on the basis of business experience or acumen. Yet effective nonprofit governance, while presenting concerns unique to nonprofits, also presents many of the same concerns as does governance of for-profit entities. This article seeks to provide a primer for nonprofit organizations that need to recruit effective governance talent. Kashmir As A Symbol Of Pakistan: Why Violence In Kashmir Never Stop?, Wonjune Hwang Jul 2019

Kashmir As A Symbol Of Pakistan: Why Violence In Kashmir Never Stop?, Wonjune Hwang

Global: Jurnal Politik Internasional

Kashmir has been a 'powder keg' in South Asia. In this region, India and Pakistan waged three all-out wars and numerous skirmishes. Kashmir has been occupied separately since 1947, but still, both sides claim the other’s occupation is illegal. Muslim Kashmiris, who are allegedly supported by Pakistan, continuously commit terrorist acts, and in return, Indian officials in Jammu and Kashmir violently suppress demonstrations and commit human right violations. After 9/11 in 2001, terrorists have become demonized and pardonless. This article focuses on analyzing the sources of violence and Pakistani intervention. The idea of this article is theoretically based on Volkan's …

Meta-Analysis Of Public Acceptance Of Unmanned Aircraft Systems In The United States, Miles M. Legere Jul 2019

Meta-Analysis Of Public Acceptance Of Unmanned Aircraft Systems In The United States, Miles M. Legere

Student Works

Automated and unmanned systems are rapidly revolutionizing every aspect of military, commercial, and public use operations in the United States. While this technology serves effectively in dull, dirty, and dangerous tasks, the rapid introduction of unmanned technologies into society has generated intense debate about their ethical, moral, and legal use. Specifically, the rise in the development and application of unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) has created significant public discord. As public acceptance of UAS plays a major role in the regulatory decisions that allow for expanded use in commercial and public use applications, it is critically important to understand the complexities …

The Public Library As Resistive Space In The Neoliberal City, Sofya Aptekar Jul 2019

The Public Library As Resistive Space In The Neoliberal City, Sofya Aptekar

Publications and Research

With reduced hours, decaying infrastructure, and precariously positioned staff, local public libraries provide much needed services in cities devastated by inequality and slashed safety nets. In this article, I draw on ethnographic research of a small public library in a diverse, mostly working class neighborhood in Queens, New York. I show that in addition to providing an alternative to the capitalist market by distributing resources according to people’s needs, the library serves as a moral underground space, where middle class people bend rules to help struggling city residents. Although the library occasionally replicates hegemonic ideologies about immigrant assimilation, it provides …

Referrals To An Opioid Overdose Program With Ems Involvement: Comparing Treatment Outcomes, Courtney Haas

Dissertations

Problem. The rising rates of opioid overdose deaths continue to be a significant public health concern. Innovative programs utilizing a Recovery Coach in the Emergency Department (ED) have demonstrated initial success. However, there is limited evidence to support their effectiveness for improving treatment or recovery outcomes for people living with opioid use disorder. The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether the method of arrival to the ED for an opioid overdose affects engagement and retention in an opioid overdose project in a midwestern metropolitan area, which utilizes a Recovery Coach in the ED. Methods: Utilizing the Plan-Do-Study-Act framework, …
