Children As Pawns Of Us Immigration Policy, Sarah Polk M.D., Scm, Mhs, Shamelle Richards, Mary Ann Hernando, Margaret Moon M.D., Joshua Sharfstein M.D.

Journal of Applied Research on Children: Informing Policy for Children at Risk

The highly publicized imposition and retraction of the “family separation” border policy by the current U.S. Administration was not an anomaly in U.S. history. In this manuscript, we place these troubling recent events in the context of decades of U.S. immigration policies and politics. We then describe the consequences of family separation and other current immigration policies on child health. We end with a call to action: Pediatricians and other advocates for child health should demand a new direction in immigration policy that stops the use of children as pawns. Instead, the United States should adopt as a fundamental guiding …

Mental Health Jail Diversion: A Therapeutic Approach To Offending In Twenty-First Century America, Ryan J. Parent Aug 2019

Mental Health Jail Diversion: A Therapeutic Approach To Offending In Twenty-First Century America, Ryan J. Parent

Criminology Student Work

This analysis is concerned with understanding the facets of criminal justice diversion programs that successfully improve the mental wellbeing of participants and, as a subsequent effect, reduce offending amongst the mentally ill populous in the United States. An inquiry of pre-program and post-program data from both adult and juvenile mental health specific programs reveals that participation amongst both groups shows a meaningful reduction in new/repeat offending in comparison to non-participants. The data shows that the expansion of law enforcement Crisis Intervention Team’s (CIT’s) has a compounding effect to the positive results. A review of these programs in Australia indicates that …

Mississippi Nurse Practitioners Utilization Of Prescription Monitoring Program And The Reduction Of Controlled Substances, Michaeline Bailey, Chelsea Lyle, Rhagen Nelson, Kristin Patterson

MSN Research Projects

Controlled substance abuse is a common problem in the United States. While the number of controlled substance deaths or injuries is increasing, the number of controlled substance prescriptions is increasing as well. Many providers acknowledge controlled substance abuse as a problem in the United States, but it is unknown how often these providers are taking measures to prevent abuse of prescribed controlled substances. Although all controlled substances are not acquired by legal prescriptions, many are. The aim of the study was to ascertain whether nurse practitioners in Mississippi are using the prescription monitoring program (PMP) to assist in creating a …

Is It Terrorism?: Public Perceptions, Media, And Labeling The Las Vegas Shooting, Matthew J. Dolliver, Erin M. Kearns

Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty Publications

When a mass casualty event occurs, why do some people label it terrorism while others do not? People are more likely to consider an attack to be terrorism when the perpetrator is Muslim, yet it is unclear what other factors influence perceptions of mass violence. Using data collected from a national sample of U.S. adults shortly after the 2017 Las Vegas shooting, we examine how media consumption and social identity influence views of the attack. Media consumption and individual-level factors—Islamophobia, political ideology, and other participant demographics—influence how people view the attack and how confident people are in their assessments.

Tiny Houses In Metropolitan Areas Of Nebraska: Seasonal Or Permanent Living Environments, Michele L. Hybner

Interior Design Program: Student Creative Activity

This study is designed to determine if tiny houses offer a viable seasonal and/or permanent living environment for Nebraska residents. Two objectives are used to assess the viability of tiny housing in this Midwestern state. The first analyzes the economics (demand, supply, and cost) of tiny housing in metropolitan areas of Nebraska. The second identifies barriers to occupancy of tiny houses in the state.
