Using Machine Learning For Antimicrobial Resistant Dna Identification, Jason I. Lingle, John Santerre
Using Machine Learning For Antimicrobial Resistant Dna Identification, Jason I. Lingle, John Santerre
SMU Data Science Review
In this paper, we present a novel machine learning-based methodology for identifying bacteria DNA sub-sequences that are associated with antimicrobial resistance. The dramatic rise in cases of antibiotic resistant bacteria has been an increasing threat across the globe as the existing treatments are rendered ineffective in treating most of these cases due to mutations of their DNA. Among the most recent bacteria to display antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is Neisseria Gonorrhea with the first global treatment failure taking place in 2016. In 2018, new cases of resistance to multiple, high levels of antibiotics were reported in the United Kingdom and Australia. …

Teacher Retention: Identifying Areas To Improve Teacher Recruitment And Retention In North Carolina Public Schools, Bin Yu, Nuoya Rezsonya, Jacob Drew
SMU Data Science Review
In this paper, we established a regression model to identify factors that significantly influenced both positively and negatively school-level yearly teacher attrition rate within North Carolina public schools using Belk Endowment Educational Attainment Data Repository for North Carolina Public Schools, district-level North Carolina IRS income tax data [2], and county-level North Carolina crime data[3]. Frequent teacher turnover has been negatively affecting teacher retention, student academic achievement, and educational attainment. School administrators are struggling to reduce teacher attrition rate since teacher retention is important to students academic achievements. Our regression model utilized an eXtreme Gradient Boosting(XGBoost) Regression model to predict school-level …

Even President Obama Makes Mistakes: Why Expansion Of The Cascade–Siskiyou National Monument Was Improper, Leila Javanshir
Even President Obama Makes Mistakes: Why Expansion Of The Cascade–Siskiyou National Monument Was Improper, Leila Javanshir
Seattle University Law Review
In 2000, President Clinton created the Cascade–Siskiyou National Monument to protect the Klamath and Siskiyou ecoregions that are home to a variety of rare and endemic plant and animal species. Later, on January 12, 2017, President Obama expanded the Cascade–Siskiyou National Monument, but timber industry representatives and Oregon counties have challenged this expansion because approximately forty thousand of the additional acres were previously reserved for permanent forest production under the Oregon and California Lands Act of 1937. This Note discusses the creation and expansion of this Monument, elaborating on its history and the purposes behind it, and sets forth the …

Staying Out: Reentry Protective Factors Among Rural Women Offenders, Michele Staton, Megan F. Dickson, Martha Tillson, J. Matthew Webster, Carl G. Leukefeld
Behavioral Science Faculty Publications
The current study examines protective factors for women who transition from county jails to rural Appalachian communities, areas with limited health and behavioral health services. The study included drug-using women recruited from three jails in rural Appalachia and followed-up at 12-months post-release. Analyses focused on differences between women who remained in the community and those who returned to custody, as well as a multivariate model to determine protective factors for reentry success. At the bivariate level, staying out of jail was associated with being older, having a job, not using drugs, stable housing, receiving health treatment, and having prosocial peers. …

The Value Of Outdoor Behavioral Healthcare For Adolescent Substance Users With Comorbid Conditions, Michael A. Gass, Thomas Wilson, Brett Talbot, Anita Reithoffer Tucker, Melissa Ugianskis, Nicholas Brennan
Faculty Publications
The damage inflicted on our society by mental health and substance use issues is reaching epidemic proportions with few signs of abating. One new and innovative strategy for addressing these comorbid issues has been the development of outdoor behavioral healthcare (OBH). This study compared the effectiveness of three post-acute adolescent substance use situations: OBH, treatment as usual (TAU), and no structured treatment (NST). The simulated target population was 13-17 years old with comorbid substance use and mental health issues. When costs were adjusted for actual completion rates of 94% in OBH, 37% in TAU, and $0 for NST, the actual …
Hiv, Stigma, And Attribution Of Causal Emotions, Zoe Elizabeth Larson
Hiv, Stigma, And Attribution Of Causal Emotions, Zoe Elizabeth Larson
Dissertations and Theses
Stigmatization of people living with HIV/AIDS is considered a major barrier to the treatment and prevention of HIV/AIDS. Attribution theorists have examined stigmatizing attitudes as a product of causal emotions; to wit, people face greater judgment and stigmatization when their actions are perceived as controllable and less stigmatization when actions are perceived as out of the realms of personal control. The current study examined attribution of causal emotions for three different circumstances of HIV acquisition, which varied in their perceived controllability. The results showed statistically significant differences in participant evaluations of responsibility, blame, and anger. Statistically significant correlations were found …

The Arkansas Highway Police: Arkansas's First State Police, Cody Besett
Theses and Dissertations
The State Road Patrol was formed under the Arkansas Highway Department in 1929 as the first state law enforcement power in Arkansas. The Road Patrol focused enforcement on proper weight and licensing of commercial vehicles. The duties for the State Road Patrol were transferred to other state agencies, including the Revenue Department and State Police (Weights and Standards Division). The Weights and Standards Division returned to the Highway Department in 1963 and was renamed the Arkansas Highway Police in 1979. The Highway Police increased training in the 1970s and 1980s. The Highway Police adopted additional duties that included federal motor …

Establishing And Testing Detection Methods For Anti-Icing And Deicing Chemicals Using Spectral Data, Gabriel Fulton
Establishing And Testing Detection Methods For Anti-Icing And Deicing Chemicals Using Spectral Data, Gabriel Fulton
Engineering
Snow and ice accumulation on pavement reduce roadway surface friction and consequently result in diminished vehicle maneuverability, slower travel speeds, reduced roadway capacity, and increased crash risk. Though the use of chlorides and other freeze-inhibiting substances have been shown to reduce these negative factors, methods to quantify and analyze snow and ice remediation methods as well as the imposed loss of material are needed to allow state and municipal agencies to better allocate winter maintenance resources and funding. The use and application of chlorides, sand, and their related mixtures have proven to be highly effective for controlling or removing the …
Pedestrian Travel-Time Maps For Perryville, Alaska: An Anisotropic Model To Support Tsunami Evacuation Planning, Lea Gardine, Dmitry Nicolsky
Pedestrian Travel-Time Maps For Perryville, Alaska: An Anisotropic Model To Support Tsunami Evacuation Planning, Lea Gardine, Dmitry Nicolsky
Alaska Earthquake Center Reports
Tsunami-induced pedestrian evacuation for the community of Perryville is evaluated using an anisotropic modeling approach developed by the U.S. Geological Survey. The method is based on path-distance algorithms and accounts for variations in land cover and directionality in the slope of terrain. We model evacuation of pedestrians to exit points located at the tsunami hazard zone boundary. Pedestrian travel-time maps are computed for two cases: i) travel to an existing evacuating shelter and ii) travel to either the evacuation or an alternative shelter. Results presented here are intended to provide guidance to local emergency management agencies for tsunami inundation assessment, …
Community Policing: Implementing Community Policing In Our Communities, Devin R. Johnson
Community Policing: Implementing Community Policing In Our Communities, Devin R. Johnson
Justice
Community policing is a philosophy that is geared towards achieving more effective and efficient crime control, reducing the fear of crime, improving police legitimacy, and services that improve the quality of life in the community. A philosophy such as this is believed to hold law enforcement officers to a higher standard of accountability, allows the public to be involved in the decision-making process, and put a greater emphasis on civil rights and liberties. Law enforcement officers in many communities network in order to build a rapport between the law enforcement agencies and the community. Community-Oriented policing addresses the root of …
Eliminating 3-Strikes Policies: A Secondary Research Analysis That Evaluates 3-Strikes Policies And Proposes A Strategy For Weaning States Off Of A Policy That Does Not Work, Austyn Ava Grubb
Justice
The 3-strike policy was adopted by some states in the 1990s. Crime rates were becoming an increasing issue and the general public was starting to notice. The policy was supposed to decrease the crime rates to make people safe. The drastic sentencing on the last strike was supposed to decrease crime rates and create a safe environment for the public. This policy has done the opposite as what was intended and now states are facing multiple issues. Reversal of the 3-strikes policies could: reverse the increased crime rates, cause less financial issues, and offenders have the opportunity to get an …

Program Evaluation Of Greek Showcase Events At Rowan University, Xochil R. Ramirez
Theses and Dissertations
The primary focus of this study was to investigate the current practices used to meet the needs of the National Pan Hellenic Council (NPHC) and Greek Cultural Organizations Council (GCOC) within the Office of Greek Affairs (OGA) at Rowan University. The study further explored the autonomy (if any) within these councils when it comes to the planning and coordination of their significant showcase events and programming. The data analysis suggested that the organizations operate independently from one another and have a sense of autonomy which could be nourished by the practices of the Office of Greek Affairs.
Drones On The Rise: Societal Misperceptions Of Small Unmanned Aircraft Systems, Renee Keilman
Drones On The Rise: Societal Misperceptions Of Small Unmanned Aircraft Systems, Renee Keilman
The Journal of Purdue Undergraduate Research
Throughout the past decade, small unmanned aircraft systems (sUAS) have been on the rise in both the civilian and military sectors. It is forecasted that in the near future they will create thousands of jobs and billions in tax revenue due to their ability to execute difficult and hazardous tasks safely, efficiently, and cost-effectively. However, one current issue with the proliferation of the technology is a shortage of skilled employees due to a lack of education and common negative public misperceptions associated with them.
To investigate this, responses from a mixed-methods survey will be analyzed. Within the survey, questions such …

Black Women’S Bodies As The Site Of Malignity: Interrogating (Mis)Representations Of Black Women In 16th And 17th Century British Literature, Tonika Reed
English (MA) Theses
This thesis examines the often overlooked and consistently maligned African/black female figure in 16th and 17th Century literature. Drawing from historical contexts and feminist literary criticism, this thesis accentuates a culturally nuanced and intersectional feminist examination of specific texts from the period in question and the extent to which they inform or draw from racist rhetoric. The texts examined will include William Dunbar’s Ane Blak Moir, Ben Jonson’s Masque of Blackness and Masque of Beauty, and Shakespeare’s Othello.
