Examination Of Psychiatric Health Disparities & Selected Laws, Rahn Kennedy Bailey
Examination Of Psychiatric Health Disparities & Selected Laws, Rahn Kennedy Bailey
Southern Illinois University Law Journal
Providing adequate healthcare to individuals in the United States is an ambitious goal. Healthcare is at the confluence of medicine, politics, economics, philosophy, ethics, and the law. Many poignant questions are brought forth when examining this multifaceted issue: Does every individual deserve access to adequate healthcare? How does one quantify, establish, attribute, and enforce a uniform cost to healthcare? Is optimal healthcare only to be enjoyed by those with abundant resources? Some, including Martin Luther King, have contended that healthcare is a human right. Academics and politicians have spent many years attempting to conjure up answers to these fundamental questions. …

A Phenomenological Study Into Niche Marketing In Higher Education, Scott W.H. Barton
A Phenomenological Study Into Niche Marketing In Higher Education, Scott W.H. Barton
All Theses And Dissertations
As higher education continues to face declining enrollment and financial pressures from decreased funding, colleges and universities must find innovative ways to differentiate themselves from competing institutions through niche marketing initiatives. This qualitative, phenomenological study developed existing research and addressed a gap in the literature as it relates to niche marketing in higher education. The research objective of this study was to illustrate the perceived value of niche marketing in light of the shifting trends in marketing, the increased competition colleges and universities face, and the need to isolate the uniqueness of a university. This study further identified individuals who …

Leaders In The Making: Higher Education, Student Activism, And The Black Freedom Struggle In South Carolina, 1925-1975, Ramon M. Jackson
Theses and Dissertations
Leaders in the Making examines the shifting political and social consciousness of African American college students in South Carolina and their reaction to and impact on the Black freedom struggle in the state between 1925 and 1975. Placing young people at the center of the story, this dissertation explains the process by which race leaders were cultivated, an effort that largely occurred in segregated public and private high schools and Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU). Black South Carolinians ingeniously transformed these symbols of racial inferiority into incubators of the post-World War Two generation of youth activists that dismantled Jim …

Climate Change And Dam Owner Liability In Rhode Island, Read Porter, James Philopena Jr., Cory Lee
Sea Grant Law Fellow Publications
Increasing precipitation associated with climate change is affecting dam operation and hazards in Rhode Island. Flooding caused by increased precipitation or extreme weather events can cause dam failure or upstream or downstream flooding, resulting in loss of life and property. These losses can result in liability, which may vary based on the dam owner and its purpose. This study assists dam owners and the public in understanding the potential liabilities that may arise as a result of flooding from extreme weather events. Section one provides a background of dam hazards in Rhode Island in the context of climate change. Section …

Karma And The United States Government: How Mass Incarceration Policies Created An Ailing And Costly Aging Population In The Prison System And How Can Civil Legal Services Assist The Elderly After Release, Korina Rud
Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice
The note argues that mass incarceration policies in the U.S. have led to a growing population of elderly inmates, resulting in significant financial and health burdens. The author emphasizes the critical role of civil legal services in assisting these individuals post-release, particularly in addressing challenges related to employment, housing, and healthcare. The central argument is that tailored legal aid can mitigate the unique struggles faced by elderly ex-offenders, thereby reducing recidivism and improving community integration.

Exploring Ways To Bring Culturally Relevant Pedagogy Into Rehabilitative Programs, Reginold P. Daniels
Doctoral Dissertations
The present study analyzes the effectiveness of a culturally relevant prison rehabilitation program carried out with 41 inmates at a California jail. The aspect of prison rehabilitation has not received enough attention by researchers previously. In this case, the author conducted an in-depth quantitative analysis on a survey with participants that he was teaching. Regression analysis was used to explore the data. The results of the regression indicated that the culturally-relevant instructor significantly enhanced violence prevention (r (37) = .410, p < 0.05). Furthermore, the study also found that cultural relevance significantly impacted communication and relationship skills (r (37) = .423, p < 0.05).

Assessing The Prevalence Of Middle Eastern Extreme Ideologies Among Some Iranians, Yusef Karimi, Alexandra Cimbura, Wagdy Loza
Assessing The Prevalence Of Middle Eastern Extreme Ideologies Among Some Iranians, Yusef Karimi, Alexandra Cimbura, Wagdy Loza
Journal of Strategic Security
This article investigates the prevalence of the extreme Middle Eastern ideologies among Iranians. Using the Assessment and Treatment of Radicalization Scale (ATRS) on a sample of Iranian participants, the authors collected from 138 Iranian Muslims. The authors compared this data with data previously collected from other parts of the world that included Atheists, Christians, and Muslims. The ATRS is a scale for measuring quantitatively Middle Eastern extremist ideologies on risk areas as reported in the literature. Similar, to previous results, the current results indicated that Iranian Muslims scored significantly higher than the sampled Christians and Atheists. However, the score of …

Extension As A Multilevel Bridging Organization: Supporting Networked Environmental Governance, Sally W. Nourani, Daniel J. Decker, Marianne E. Krasny
Journal of Extension
Governmental and nongovernmental actors at different spatial and jurisdictional levels have information that can benefit natural resources management; however, barriers in communication and organizational culture often prevent information sharing and joint endeavors. Bridging entities, such as task forces or working groups, bring together potential stakeholders to pool expertise and stimulate shared learning. Using a network survey, interview data, and meeting minutes, we constructed a case study of task forces convened to stimulate management of the emerald ash borer, an invasive wood-boring beetle. We found that coordinated action among university and county Extension catalyzed bridging through visionary program design and network …
Constitutional Judges As Agents For Development, Maartje De Visser
Constitutional Judges As Agents For Development, Maartje De Visser
Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law
This Article explores how constitutional judges can become agents for development and how they may wish to go about performing this role. Due to the high politico-economic stakes involved and the inevitability of trade-offs between competing interests, judicial review of developmental questions is liable to expose judges to negative fall-outs. At the same time, it is fairly common for Asian constitutions to expressly set out the parameters or objectives for economic development that the State is expected to realize, while simultaneously recognizing a suite of (socio-)economic rights, thereby providing textual ammunition to query the validity of a government’s chosen implementation …
When The Courts Have To Rule On Government Decisions, Tan K. B. Eugene
When The Courts Have To Rule On Government Decisions, Tan K. B. Eugene
Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law
In a commentary, SMU Associate Professor of Law Eugene Tan cited examples in United Kingdom and Singapore as he discussed the legal limits of legal power and the constitutional role of the courts. He pointed out that the message from the courts for both cases is that “judicial deference notwithstanding, the judiciary will not shy away from limiting the boundaries of executive discretion where it is necessary to do so such as when a fundamental constitutional principle or fundamental liberties are at stake”.
When Protest Is The Disaster: Constitutional Implications Of State And Local Emergency Power, Karen Pita Loor
When Protest Is The Disaster: Constitutional Implications Of State And Local Emergency Power, Karen Pita Loor
Faculty Scholarship
The President’s use of emergency authority has recently ignited concern among civil rights groups over national executive emergency power. However, state and local emergency authority can also be dangerous and deserves similar attention. This article demonstrates that, just as we watch over the national executive, we must be wary of and check on state and local executives — and their emergency management law enforcement actors — when they react in crisis mode. This paper exposes and critiques state executives’ use of emergency power and emergency management mechanisms to suppress grassroots political activity and suggests avenues to counter that abuse. I …
