The Growth Of Amish And Plain Anabaptist Communities In Kentucky, Joseph Donnermeyer, Cory Anderson
The Growth Of Amish And Plain Anabaptist Communities In Kentucky, Joseph Donnermeyer, Cory Anderson
Journal of Amish and Plain Anabaptist Studies
This article examines the growth of Amish and plain Anabaptist communities and population in Kentucky, one of the few southern states with a sizeable plain Anabaptist presence across much of its rural areas. Within the Amish religious tradition, this study focuses on both the broadly defined Old Order Amish, namely, those who prohibit ownership of motor vehicles for transportation, and the Amish-Mennonites, those who allow ownership. We provide an overview of their community formation and present a county-based estimate of their population. There are now 53 Amish communities in Kentucky, and a population of nearly 10,000. Over half (27) of …
Horse And Buggy Crash Study Ii: Overstretching The Slow-Moving Vehicle Emblem's Abilities: Lessons From The Swartzentruber Amish, Cory Anderson
Horse And Buggy Crash Study Ii: Overstretching The Slow-Moving Vehicle Emblem's Abilities: Lessons From The Swartzentruber Amish, Cory Anderson
Journal of Amish and Plain Anabaptist Studies
For decades, the Swartzentruber sect of Amish have, for religious reasons, rejected state-level mandates for horse-drawn buggies to display the S.M.V. (slow-moving vehicle) emblem. Court cases in several states have suggested (1) confusion over what the emblem is supposed to accomplish, and (2) questions about the emblem's superiority to alternatives. Synthesizing evidence presented in several court cases involving the S.M.V. emblem and the Swartzentruber Amish, this study clarifies what the S.M.V. emblem can be expected to accomplish and in which domains it reaches its limits. The evidence is organized categorically and presented as a series of cues presented to the …
Horse And Buggy Crash Study I: Common Crash Scenarios Between A Motor Vehicle And The Amish / Old Order Mennonite Horse And Buggy, Cory Anderson
Horse And Buggy Crash Study I: Common Crash Scenarios Between A Motor Vehicle And The Amish / Old Order Mennonite Horse And Buggy, Cory Anderson
Journal of Amish and Plain Anabaptist Studies
Horse and buggy transportation is spreading as rapidly as its Amish and Old Order Mennonite users are, as are buggy crashes with motor vehicles. This study examines the primary causes of 76 reported horse and buggy crashes in Pennsylvania in 2006. The main crash types identified include a motorist rear-ending a forward-moving buggy, a motorist striking the buggy while attempting to pass, buggy struck while crossing an intersection, and buggy struck while making a left turn. While causative factors varied, major factors include the motorist or buggy driver incorrectly comprehending speed differentials, the motorist acting carelessly around the buggy, and …

Marijuana’S Continuing Illegality And Investors’ Securities Fraud Problem: The Doctrines Of Unclean Hands And In Pari Delicto, Casey W. Baker
The Journal of Business, Entrepreneurship & the Law
Marijuana-related businesses have blossomed into an industry with an estimated total market value of $7.2 billion in 2016, with annual growth projected at 17%. Industry surveys report that 62% of marijuana-related businesses have offered equity stakes to investors and approximately one-half of marijuana-related businesses planned to actively seek investment funding in 2017. Along with the investment opportunity comes heightened fraud risk, with regulators cautioning investors against investment due to the lack of accurate and publicly-available information. Also, despite state-level decriminalization, marijuana possession, sale, and distribution continues to be a crime under federal law. The criminal nature of the marijuana industry …

Environmental & Global Health Faculty Research
Background Opioid overdose deaths have increased exponentially in the United States. Bystander response to opioid overdose ideally involves administering naloxone, providing rescue breathing, and calling 911 to summon emergency medical assistance. Recently in the US, public health and public safety agencies have begun seeking to use 911 calls as a method to identify and deliver post-overdose interventions to opioid overdose patients. Little is known about the opinions of PWUDs about the barriers, benefits, or potential harms of post-overdose interventions linked to the 911 system. We sought to understand the perspectives of PWUDs about a method for using 911 data to …

Amici are professors of administrative law with particular expertise in government transparency, including issues such as the incorporation by reference of private standards into over 9,000 federal regulations. Amici have a strong interest in the development of administrative and copyright law in a manner that enables simple and universal access without charge to regulatory law. As scholars of federal incorporation by reference of private standards, amici write separately to urge the Court to reaffirm the application of the government edicts doctrine to all text that a government has adopted as the law. In particular, the government edicts doctrine applies to …

Dam Removal In New Jersey: Ecological Uplift, Public Safety, And Building Ecosystem Resilience In Advance Of Climate Change, Beth Styler Barry
Dam Removal In New Jersey: Ecological Uplift, Public Safety, And Building Ecosystem Resilience In Advance Of Climate Change, Beth Styler Barry
Sustainability Seminar Series
Dam removals are often the subject of controversy. We’ll explore dam removals from planning to (de)construction and see examples of ecosystem changes that follow. New Jersey has over 1700 dams, the average age of these dams is over 50 years. Many dams have a public use, they may provide a potable water supply or create economically important recreational lakes. However, many dams have outlived their intended use, have fallen into serious disrepair and negatively impact ecosystems.

The Art Of Occupation : Crime And Governance In American-Controlled Germany, 1944–1949, Thomas J. Kehoe
The Art Of Occupation : Crime And Governance In American-Controlled Germany, 1944–1949, Thomas J. Kehoe
Ohio University Press Open Access Books
The literature describing social conditions during the post–World War II Allied occupation of Germany has been divided between seemingly irreconcilable assertions of prolonged criminal chaos and narratives of strict martial rule that precluded crime. In The Art of Occupation, Thomas J. Kehoe takes a different view on this history, addressing this divergence through an extensive, interdisciplinary analysis of the interaction between military government and social order.
Focusing on the American Zone and using previously unexamined American and German military reports, court records, and case files, Kehoe assesses crime rates and the psychology surrounding criminality. He thereby offers the first comprehensive …
