How Do Trainers In Empirically Supported Treatments Decide What To Train?: An Investigation Of The Trainer’S Role In The Science-To-Service Pathway, David Pendleton Forman
How Do Trainers In Empirically Supported Treatments Decide What To Train?: An Investigation Of The Trainer’S Role In The Science-To-Service Pathway, David Pendleton Forman
Psychology ETDs
BACKGROUND: Despite significant progress in identifying empirically supported
elements of psychotherapy treatments over the last 20 years, the integration of these findings into clinical practice remains low. Practitioner training has been identified as a core component of successful translation of scientific findings into practice. Yet, little research has been conducted on the role of the trainer in the dissemination of empirically supported treatments (ESTs). This exploratory study investigated the practices and attitudes of trainers of an EST, Motivational Interviewing (MI), to identify potential factors related to successful and/or unsuccessful dissemination efforts. METHOD: A measure of Motivational Interviewing components (MIC) and …

A Black African Teacher’S Experiences In America: Examining The Lived Experiences Of A Black African Teacher Working In A Midwestern Public School, Valentine Malumbila
Dissertations
Using sociocultural theoretical approach, intersectionality of race, Critical Race Theory, and Bakhtin’s authoritative and persuasive discourse as a theoretical framework, this study explores the various diversities that I encountered as a Black African working and living in America. The diversity that I, like many other Black African immigrants in America, suffer results from culture shock due to lack of culture capital to comprehend and make sense of my surroundings. The lack of culture capital left me exposed to me some degrees of ethnic profiling, isolation and loneliness, and grieving due to loss of family and things that mattered the most …
Power In The Counseling Relationship: The Role Of Ignorance, Izaak L. Williams, Peg O'Connor
Power In The Counseling Relationship: The Role Of Ignorance, Izaak L. Williams, Peg O'Connor
Journal of Human Services: Training, Research, and Practice
This article explores the role of therapist self-disclosure in clinical settings. Distinctions are made between the enmeshed concepts of privacy, secrecy, and confidentiality to elucidate the role of ignorance in maintaining the power dynamics in therapeutic relationships. While some measure of privacy is essential to counseling practice, secretive behavior (in which the counselor divulges too little about themselves) can have a negative impact on the therapeutic relationship and the client’s therapeutic outcomes. There is, therefore, an under-appreciated and delicate balancing act between withholding information to protect the client and the counselor and revealing enough personal details to empower the client’s …

The Protective Role Of Friendship: Crossgroup Friendship Mediates The Effect Of Ideological Quest For Significance On Commitment To A Radical Group, Mirra Noor Milla, Joevarian Hudiyana
The Protective Role Of Friendship: Crossgroup Friendship Mediates The Effect Of Ideological Quest For Significance On Commitment To A Radical Group, Mirra Noor Milla, Joevarian Hudiyana
Psychological Research on Urban Society
On the basis of the Quest for Significance theory, a person’s sense of meaning and personal significance may be obtained from ideological narratives. The more a radical ideology gives a person a sense of meaning, the less likely it is that he or she will engage in interpersonal relations and friendships with out-group members. In this study, we hypothesized that ideological quest for significance would predict commitment to a radical group and that this association would be mediated through cross-group friendship. This research was based on interviews with 241 prisoners at 59 Indonesian prisons, who were serving sentences for terrorism …

Differences Between Bilinguals And Monolinguals In False Memory Production? A Look Into The Drm Paradigm Using Contextual Details, Paul Riesthuis, Henry Otgaar, Jianqin Wang
Psychological Research on Urban Society
This study compared false memory production in Spanish monolinguals and Spanish-Catalan bilinguals. We used an adjusted Deese-Roediger-McDermott (DRM) false memory paradigm and presented the participants with eight Spanish DRM lists containing 12 words each, along with figures and colors to manipulate contextual details. Free recall results showed higher true recall levels in bilinguals than in monolinguals. However, we did not find notable false memory differences between the monolinguals and bilinguals. We found no differences in the amount of contextual details added in the true and false recall, indicating that levels of confidence in memories are similar in the two groups. …

Communicative Disorders and Deaf Education Faculty Publications
The accuracy of four machine learning methods in predicting narrative macrostructure scores was compared to scores obtained by human raters utilizing a criterion-referenced progress monitoring rubric. The machine learning methods that were explored covered methods that utilized hand-engineered features, as well as those that learn directly from the raw text. The predictive models were trained on a corpus of 414 narratives from a normative sample of school-aged children (5;0-9;11) who were given a standardized measure of narrative proficiency. Performance was measured using Quadratic Weighted Kappa, a metric of inter-rater reliability. The results indicated that one model, BERT, not only achieved …

The Moderating Role Of Trait Anger In The Relationship Between Masculine Stress And Intimate Partner Violence, Cantyo Atindriyo Dannisworo, Hana Berliani Adiningsih, Mellia Christia
Psychological Research on Urban Society
There is a high rate of intimate partner violence (IPV) in urban settings. Previous research has found that masculine gender role stress (MGRS) and anger predict IPV. This study aimed to examine the moderating role of anger on the relationship between MGRS and IPV. The sample included 366 urban male college students across Java, who completed an online questionnaire. Measures used were the MGRS-A, BPAQ, and CTS2. Using Hayes’ moderation analysis, the model obtained a significant fit (R2 = .1039, F (3,362) = 13.994, p = .000). Both MGRS (p = .0264) and trait anger (p = .000) predicted IPV. …

Using Video Modeling To Teach Trial-Based Functional Analysis, Breana A. Pauline
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The trial-based functional analysis (Trial-based FA) was adapted from the traditional functional analysis (FA) to make FA methodology more feasible to conduct in situations where controlled settings are unavailable. Additionally, teachers and paraprofessionals have been trained to conduct trial-based FAs with high fidelity (Kunnavatana, Bloom, Samaha, & Dayton, 2013). Behavioral analytic procedures such as video modeling are available to teach these skills to behavior analysts that do not have access to these training. This procedure is effective, well-liked, and can be used remotely. Video modeling may be used to train behavior analysts to conduct trial-based functional analysis remotely, which could …

The Power Of Horror: Abject Art And Terrorism In Don Delillo’S Falling Man, Kelsie Donnelly
The Power Of Horror: Abject Art And Terrorism In Don Delillo’S Falling Man, Kelsie Donnelly
Contemporary Aesthetics (Journal Archive)
This paper argues that Don DeLillo’s 2007 novel, Falling Man, engages with abject art to disrupt the pre-existing systems of signification and dualistic rhetoric that characterized state and media responses to the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. The novel engages with one of the most controversial areas of 9/11 discourse: claims that the attacks were an artistic spectacle. Falling Man posits that if art is to continue to grapple with the meanings of 9/11, it must depart from familiar discourses of tragedy and triumph and embrace radical artistic responses. The novel fulfills this through its engagement with abject …

Ethically Questionable Consumer Behaviors: Korean And American Perspectives, Jungki Lee, Sam Fullerton
Asia Marketing Journal
This study compares the ethical inclination regarding consumer misbehaviors from two countries with contrasting cultural characteristics. National samples of South Korean and American adults provided their perceptions of the appropriateness of 12 ethically questionable consumer actions. The scenarios ranged from illegal actions, such as fraudulently inflating one’s losses when filing an insurance claim to legal, yet questionable, actions such as purchasing an item that the buyer recognizes as having been mispriced. The 12 scenarios exhibited a wide range of mean responses in both countries, thereby supporting the oft-stated premise that consumer ethics is a situational phenomenon. Findings indicate not only …

A Study On The Influence Of Instructional Mentors On Novice Teachers In High-Needs Schools, Dodi Palkovic Davenport
A Study On The Influence Of Instructional Mentors On Novice Teachers In High-Needs Schools, Dodi Palkovic Davenport
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Within the first five years of new teachers’ employment, between 30 and 50 percent leave the profession (Smith &Ingersoll, 2004). High levels of teacher attrition are associated with negative effects on student achievement (Strong, 2005). In an effort to retain teachers and improve the quality of the teaching workforce, many states and local school districts require new teachers to enroll in induction and mentoring programs. This study is part of a larger program evaluation of one public school district’s new teacher induction program. The purpose of this investigation was to determine how a novice teacher perceives the influence of a …
Evaluating The Evidence Base For Evidence-Based Instructional Practices In Chemistry Through Meta-Analysis, Md Tawabur Rahman
Evaluating The Evidence Base For Evidence-Based Instructional Practices In Chemistry Through Meta-Analysis, Md Tawabur Rahman
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Investigating the effectiveness of instructional practices provides an evidence base to inform instructional decisions. Synthesizing research studies on instructional effectiveness provides an estimate of the generalizability of effectiveness across settings, along with an exploration of factors that may moderate the impact, which cannot be achieved within individual studies. This study sought to provide a synthesis of evidence- based instructional practices (EBIPs) particular to chemistry through meta-analysis. 99 studies were analyzed comprising a broader view of chemistry specific studies than past meta-analyses. The results showed that EBIPs feature a demonstrably positive impact on students’ academic performance in chemistry, although assessment topic …
Digital Corpus Use In Learning L2 Prepositional Collocations: A Pilot Study, Matthew A. Siegel
Digital Corpus Use In Learning L2 Prepositional Collocations: A Pilot Study, Matthew A. Siegel
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Because of their prevalence in both spoken and written English, collocations—words that go together—are important for the English language learner. Collocations that contain prepositions have been shown to pose particular difficulty (Hong, Rahim, Hua, & Salehuddin, 2011). Collocational errors are common, even among advanced learners (Laufer & Waldman, 2011). The purpose of this pilot study was three-fold: (1) to determine whether the use of a digital corpus by English language learners is effective in learning prepositional collocations, (2) to determine if proficiency level exerts any influence on effectiveness of using a digital corpus to learn prepositional collocations, and (3) to …

A Quiet Valley At Roztoky: Testimony Of Singularity In The Landscape Imagery Of Zdenka Braunerová, Zdislava Ungrova
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Although Czech artist Zdenka Braunerova (1858-1934) has been recognized by scholars for her contributions to the Czech cultural scene, thorough visual analyses of her artworks are rare. By investigating a single landscape painting, A Quiet Valley at Roztoky, and placing it into the visual and contextual frame of its creation, this thesis thus approaches Braunerova’s artistic oeuvre in an uncommon way. I argue that if understood within its social, cultural and historical context, the painting transcends the purely optic qualities of a landscape genre and acquires instead the self-referencing character of a self-representation.
By subjecting the chosen painting to a …
