Political Attitudes Of The Young Electorate In The 2016 Presidential Election And Parental Influences On Political Identity Formation., Mary C. Meyer, Svetlana Chesser, Sally B. Swanson, Sean Forbes Nov 2019

Political Attitudes Of The Young Electorate In The 2016 Presidential Election And Parental Influences On Political Identity Formation., Mary C. Meyer, Svetlana Chesser, Sally B. Swanson, Sean Forbes

Modern Psychological Studies

We examined the political attitudes of college-aged students and the political identities of their parents to better understand the role that both parent-child political socialization and the liberal university environment play in political identity formation. We compared students explicit and implicit political attitudes and examined the relationships of these attitudes to the political identities of their parents. We also explored the uniqueness of two candidates, Bernie Sanders and Donald Trump in the 2016 Presidential election. Our results supported the existing notion of parental influences on political identity formation and revealed that the university environment may not play as large of …

Sexual Victimization Experience Predicting Empathy With An Unspecified Or Date Rape Victim, Gina Santoriello, Suzanne L. Osman Nov 2019

Sexual Victimization Experience Predicting Empathy With An Unspecified Or Date Rape Victim, Gina Santoriello, Suzanne L. Osman

Modern Psychological Studies

The purpose of this study was to examine empathy with a rape victim in two experimental conditions (date rape; unspecified rape) based on personal sexual victimization experience (nonvictim; date victim; nondate victim). Undergraduate women (n = 212) completed the Sexual Experiences Survey (Koss, Gidycz, & Wisniewski, 1987), and one of two versions of the Rape Victim Empathy Scale (Smith & Frieze, 2003). Results showed that all victims reported greater empathy than nonvictims, and a potential interaction (p < .10); date victims tended to report greater empathy with a date rape victim than an unspecified rape victim, but nondate victims tended to report greater empathy with an unspecified rape victim than a date rape victim. Similarity in experience may influence empathy.

Child Outcomes Of Having A Parent With An Aud, Faith A. Shank, Kirsten Petrarca, Carolyn Barry Nov 2019

Child Outcomes Of Having A Parent With An Aud, Faith A. Shank, Kirsten Petrarca, Carolyn Barry

Modern Psychological Studies

Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD) affects not only the diagnosed individuals, but also those around them. This review explores how an AUD can affect parenting styles and, in turn, children’s development in four main areas of development (physical health, academic abilities, social development, and mental health). Generally, parents with an AUD negatively impact the child’s development (weight issues, poor academic skills, and aggressiveness). Existing limitations of the literature and future research directions are discussed, such as the use of cross-sectional studies and need for more clinical and longitudinal studies. Also, research on this topic extensively covers the situations of children within …

The Impact Of A Goal-Setting Intervention With Custodial Grandmothers: A Demonstration Project, Julian Montoro-Rodriguez, Bert Hayslip Nov 2019

The Impact Of A Goal-Setting Intervention With Custodial Grandmothers: A Demonstration Project, Julian Montoro-Rodriguez, Bert Hayslip

GrandFamilies: The Contemporary Journal of Research, Practice and Policy

The increasing number of grandparents raising grandchildren underscores the need to provide assistance to grandparent caregivers in terms of training them not only to refresh intergenerational skills, but also developing appropriate and effective strategies associated with the setting of personally meaningful goals for themselves. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the effectiveness of a socio-cognitive pilot demonstration program to improve the health and social psychological outcomes for grandmothers raising grandchildren using the theory of Selection, Optimization and Compensation (Freund & Baltes, 1998).

Sixteen grandmothers raising a grandchild under the age of 18 without the assistance of that child’s …

Asian American Grandparents Caring For Grandchildren: Findings From The Census 2010-2012 American Community Survey, Fengyan Tang, Heejung Jang, Elizabeth Mulvaney

GrandFamilies: The Contemporary Journal of Research, Practice and Policy

Research on grandparent caregivers has received growing attention, yet information about Asian American grandparents is limited. Using 2010-2012 American Community Survey (ACS) data, this study provides a national profile of Asian American grandparent caregivers across ethnic groups by region (East, Southeast, and South Asians), and examines socioeconomic and cultural factors related to grandparent caregiving. Of the over half a million Asian Americans who lived with grandchildren during 2010-2012, about 16 percent reported as primary caregivers, and over 31 percent lived in grandparent-headed households. Compared with East Asians, South Asian grandparents were less likely to be primary caregivers for their grandchildren, …

Robust Adhd Testing By Applying Clustering Techniques To Survey Responses Or Speech Data, Lingyi Zhang, Cliff Chin Ngai Sze Nov 2019

Robust Adhd Testing By Applying Clustering Techniques To Survey Responses Or Speech Data, Lingyi Zhang, Cliff Chin Ngai Sze

Defensive Publications Series

Existing tests for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) may exhibit some bias. Also, these tests require filling in a survey with subjective responses, which can lead to misdiagnosis. The techniques described herein reduce bias in ADHD tests by seeking clusters in test-parameter space conditioned on certain characteristics of a person. Clustering is performed using machine learning techniques. With user permission, speech data is obtained via one or more devices such as a phone, smart speaker, etc. an is used to make objective diagnoses of ADHD.

Effects Of Synchronous And Asynchronous Music During High Intensity Training On Obesity And Metabolic Health In Singapore Women, Dd Salle, Ms Aman, Mn Hashim, Fy Loo, T Tran

International Journal of Exercise Science

International Journal of Exercise Science 12(5): 1254-1264, 2019. Evidence suggests that high intensity exercise aided by musicrenders positive results in health related fitness components. However, less is known about the influence synchronous and asynchronous music may have on outcomes in overweight and obese women.A twelve-week, randomized-controlled trial was conducted using premenopausal overweight/obese (BMI > 24.9 kg/m2) adult Singapore women (n = 92) divided into three groups (exercise with synchronous, asynchronous, and no music, respectively). Pre-post clinical examinations, anthropometric, and fitness evaluations were conducted. Statistical analyses revealed that physical activity was effective in all groups with music or non-music. Body …

Huit, Grant Shulman, Jane L. Meza, Jolene Smyth, Nathan Woodruff, Richard Mocarski, Jae Puckett, Debra A. Hope

Trans Collaborations Academic Papers

One key aspect of evidence-based psychological services is monitoring progress to inform treatment decision making, often using a brief self-report measure. However, no such measure exists to support measurement based care given the distinct needs of transgender and gender diverse people (TGD), a group facing large documented health disparities and marginalization in healthcare. The purpose of the present study was to develop and provide initial psychometric validation of a short, behavioral health progress monitoring self-report measure, the Trans Collaborations Clinical Check-in (TC3). TGD communities, providers identified as TGD-affirmative, and relevant academic experts contributed to item and scale development. The final …

Safety Health & Industrial Hygiene

The objective of this study was to examine costs associated with workers’ compensation claims from firefighters in Montana. Workers’ compensation claims data were obtained from the Montana Department of Labor and Industry. The highest proportion of total benefit amount dollars was paid to male firefighters (93.7%), public employees (84.8%), and those who were 45-54 years of age at time of injury (23.9%). Part-time employees represented the employment category receiving the highest total benefit amount ($766,354). July represented the month with the highest average total benefit amount cost ($52,084). Strains and sprains, back injuries, and lifting activities all represented the highest …

Experimental Investigation Examining The Effects Of Acute Exercise On Implicit Memory Function, Paul D. Loprinzi, Morgan Gilbert, Gina Robinson, Briahna Dickerson

Faculty and Student Publications

© 2019, PsychOpen. All rights reserved. Emerging work suggests that acute exercise can enhance explicit memory function. Minimal research, however, has examined whether acute exercise is associated with implicit memory, which was the purpose of this study. Three separate experimental studies were computed (N = 120; Mean age = 21). In Experiment 1, participants were randomly assigned to either a moderate-intensity bout of acute exercise (15-minute) or engaged in a seated control task (15-minute), followed by the completion of a word-fragmentation implicit memory task. Experiment 2 replicated Experiment 1, but instead employed a higher-intensity exercise protocol. For Experiment 3, participants …

© 2019 by the authors. Licensee MDPI, Basel, Switzerland. Purpose: Previous research has evaluated the effects of acute hypoxia exposure on cognitive function, notably executive function. No studies, to date, have evaluated the effects of acute hypoxia exposure on memory interference, which was the purpose of this experiment. Methods: A within-subjects, counterbalanced experimental design was employed, with condition (hypoxia vs. normoxia) and time (immediate vs. delayed) being the independent variables. Participants (N = 21; Mage = 21.0 years) completed two laboratory visits, involving 30 min of exposure to either hypoxia (FIO2 = 0.12) or normoxia (FIO2 = 0.21). Following this, …

Bridging The Gap Between Immigration Detainment And Parental Rights: A Constitutional Consideration Of Migrant Children Separation, Kelsey Burge Nov 2019

Bridging The Gap Between Immigration Detainment And Parental Rights: A Constitutional Consideration Of Migrant Children Separation, Kelsey Burge

Northern Illinois Law Review Supplement

Federal immigration law does not completely comport with state family law because some federal legislation, such as the Adoption and Safe Families Act (ASFA), requires states to initiate parental custody proceedings due to children being separated from their parents for a statutorily defined period, even when parents are detained in immigration centers with very uncertain timelines. Parental custody proceedings involve factors that each state has authority to enact evaluating parental fitness; however, the factors may be implicitly or explicitly biased toward migrant parents, resulting in migrant parental custody being terminated unfairly. While Trump's zero-tolerance policy enacted in 2018 sparked outrage …

Data Scams, Roger Allan Ford Nov 2019

Data Scams, Roger Allan Ford

Law Faculty Scholarship

Targeting platforms like Google and Facebook are usually seen as presenting tradeoffs between utility and privacy. This Article identifies and describes a different, non-privacy cost of targeting platforms: they make it easier for malicious actors to scam others. They do this by making it easier for scammers to reach the most promising victims, hide from law-enforcement authorities and others, and develop better scams. Technology offers potential solutions, since the same data and targeting tools that enable scams could help detect and prevent them, though neither platforms nor law-enforcement officials have both the incentives and expertise needed to develop and deploy …
