Duty Of Care And Risk Management For Institutions Of Higher Education, Jorge De La Torre Nov 2019

Duty Of Care And Risk Management For Institutions Of Higher Education, Jorge De La Torre

CUP Ed.D. Dissertations

Institutions of Higher Education (IHE) authority has evolved from nearly absolute power in the hands of colleges and universities to an approach more focused on individual students and their rights. Yet, while college authority over campus life and student conduct has diminished, the duty of care required in the form of additional student affairs services has increased. The history of the complicated relationship between students and IHE starts with the concept “in loco parentis,” which is Latin for “in place of parents.” A lack of proper and continued risk assessment and a lack of effective and manageable policies and procedures …

Justice Scalia Got It Right, But For The Wrong Reasons: Scalia’S Recognition Of The Supreme Court’S “Southern Exception” In U.S. Constitutional Jurisprudence And The Connection Of “Southern Exceptionalism” To “American Exceptionalism", James D. Wilets

University of Miami Law Review

The late Justice Scalia has repeatedly and sardonically noted that the Supreme Court has discounted the views of Southern states in determining whether there is a consensus among the states with regards to a Constitutional norm. This Article has termed that Supreme Court position as “Southern Exception” and can be viewed as an effort by some Justices to address the unique social, economic, religious and cultural traditions in the South engendered by its unique" and “exceptional” history. This Article will also explore how this "Southern Exception" affected American jurisprudence to the point of rendering it "exceptional" from much of the …

Evidence’S #Metoo Moment, Aníbal Rosario-Lebrón Nov 2019

Evidence’S #Metoo Moment, Aníbal Rosario-Lebrón

University of Miami Law Review

The #MeToo movement has drawn attention to the prevalence of sexual and gender-based violence. But more importantly, it has exposed how society discounts the testimony of women. This Article unfolds how this credibility discounting is reinforced in our evidentiary system through the use of character for untruthfulness evidence to impeach victims. Specifically, through defense attorneys’ practice of impeaching sexual and gender-based violence victims’ character for truthfulness as a way to introduce functional evidence of credibility biases regarding the trustworthiness of sexual and gender-based violence victims and the plausibility of their testimonies. The Article further shows a correlation between the poor …

Prosocial behaviors are correlated with positive relationships and acceptance by peers while aggression is correlated with negative relationships and rejection by peers. Peer aggression is also negatively correlated with peer liking, though the relationship may differ based on gender and norms. The current study examines the relationship between the different forms of aggression (physical, verbal, relational) and peer liking. The study asked 148 students from five classrooms in Curitiba, Brazil to complete peer nominations of their classmates and nominate students who were aggressive as well as rate how much they liked each peer. Multilevel modeling was used to analyze the …

Attachment In Higher Education And The Workplace: A Literature Review, Emily A. Robey Nov 2019

Attachment In Higher Education And The Workplace: A Literature Review, Emily A. Robey

University Honors Theses

This literature review explores attachment theory in the context of the workplace and higher education. The attachment research in these contexts is lacking, especially for higher education, but the data that does exist shows an important influence of attachment orientation and attachment related behaviors on the success of and interaction between individuals in these environments. Additionally, the influence of context on attachment related behaviors is explored. These discussions culminate in suggestions as to how attachment research can be further expanded upon and limitations in both the current research and this literature review.

Chemical Tools And Treatments For Neurological Disorders And Infectious Diseases, Andrea Lemus Nov 2019

Chemical Tools And Treatments For Neurological Disorders And Infectious Diseases, Andrea Lemus

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Neurological disorders have multiple etiologies such as genetics and age. Stress related disorders are becoming more common and diagnosed more often. Mental health disorders are no longer being treated as purely psychological. Mechanisms into the underlying factors of these disorders continue to bring this area to new frontiers. Chapter 2 of this dissertation focuses on the efforts made to prove the association of the protein FKBP51 to the stress response. We synthesized and used a molecular tool to discover and prove these interactions.

The study of neurodegenerative diseases is of continued importance as the world reaches record numbers of an …

Cortical Thickness Comparison Of Asd And Td Subjects, Jonathan Rigoberto Uriarte-Lopez Nov 2019

Cortical Thickness Comparison Of Asd And Td Subjects, Jonathan Rigoberto Uriarte-Lopez

University Honors Theses

With 1 out of every 59 adolescents diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), more research interest has been dedicated to studying why ASD individuals experience their symptoms of restricted and/or repetitive behaviors, and deficits in social interaction and communication. ASD can only be diagnosed by psychiatric evaluation of behavior, and there is a lack of reliable biomarkers for ASD to verify the diagnosis. To potentially find a reliable biomarker, we compared cortical thickness in 911 ASD subjects and 999 controls from the Autism Brain Imaging Data Exchange (ABIDE) dataset. The dataset was processed using the Developmental Cognition and Neuroimaging (DCAN) …

How Urban Land Use Contributes To Inequitable Health Outcomes: An Interdisciplinary Review & Analysis, Bliss Storm Croton

University Honors Theses

Using existing literature as a basis for initial review, this paper seeks to explore the relationship between urban land use and socioeconomic status as both pertain to the prevalence of psychological health diagnoses among neighborhood residents. The purpose of this analysis is to investigate the combined literature from multiple areas of research in order to gain a more holistic, up-to-date scope of knowledge regarding how discriminatory neighborhood land use may result in poorer psychological health outcomes for urban populations. By utilizing an interdisciplinary approach, some of the locally relevant, long-term impacts of uneven development and environmental injustice are examined based …

Art Therapy And Dialectical Behavioral Therapy: A Workbook, Jasmine S. Griswold Nov 2019

Art Therapy And Dialectical Behavioral Therapy: A Workbook, Jasmine S. Griswold

University Honors Theses

Looking into the ways in which we treat anxiety and depression in both clinical and casual settings it seemed apparent that there are similar tools being utilized to alleviate the effects, but there didn’t seem to be a cohesion of these tools. With Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) a mindfulness based approach to therapy and the use of art as a tool to create dialogue in Art Therapy (AT) it seemed appropriate to combine the modalities to create a workbook that could be used on one's own or in conjunction with a therapist.

Caring About Aftercare: Thesis Presentation Of Initial Findings, Sage B. Fuentes

University Honors Theses

While previous research has studied the impact of stigma and non-normative play within the BDSM and kink community, previous psychological research involving BDSM practitioners has not investigated the cultural practice of aftercare that tends to follow the highly sensationalized acts within the culture. The current study examines this cultural practice by giving a series of semi-structured interviews to assess the importance of aftercare and how it impacts negotiations and play. BDSM practitioners (n = 11) participated in audio recorded interviews regarding questions on identity, kink, aftercare, consent, and negotiation. 72.73% of individuals rated aftercare as mostly to largely important in …

An Aggregation Of Survey Questionnaires In A Fuzzy Environment And Its Application, Dae Young Choi Nov 2019

An Aggregation Of Survey Questionnaires In A Fuzzy Environment And Its Application, Dae Young Choi

Malaysian Journal of Computing (MJoC)

In the response process of survey questionnaires, respondents generally express their opinions (assessment) in a fuzzy environment, i.e., assessment with a degree of membership, and in many cases, an aggregation of survey questionnaires is generally computed mathematically. In this paper, we propose a new aggregation method using the FEV (Fuzzy Expected Value) in summarizing survey questionnaires. As an application of proposed aggregation method, to quantify accurately the current state of opinions and the reasons for national IT investment increasing the rate of economic growth, we decided to circulate a survey questionnaire on national IT investment to interested parties throughout the …

Nebraska Center for Research on Children, Youth, Families, and Schools: Faculty Publications

The transition to kindergarten is foundational for children’s future school performance and families’ relationships with the educational system. Despite its well-documented benefits, few studies have explored family engagement across the pre- Kindergarten (pre-K) to kindergarten transition nor considered the role of geographic context during this period. This study examined trajectories of family engagement across the pre-K to kindergarten transition, and identified whether engagement differs for families in rural versus urban settings. Participants were 248 parents of children who participated in publicly funded pre-K programs and transitioned 1 year later into kindergarten. Home-based involvement increased from pre-K through kindergarten. School-based involvement …

Behavioral Challenges Of Gamification In Higher Education: Balancing The Thinking Head And The Need To Think Ahead, Harika Rao

Faculty and Staff Publications & Presentations

Introduction and scope of the paper

Though in nascent stage, gamification in higher education is gradually gaining traction as a modern tool for both teachers and students to enhance both learning outcomes and learning scenarios. In simple terms, a game in educational context puts ‘play’ at its center in a themed approach to propel students to achieve desired academic goals. More formally, we can also define a gamification as one consisting of activities and processes by one or more students, following a specific set of rules and competing with one another to achieve a preset achievement goal or to solve …

Transverse Chromatic Aberrations In Virtual Reality Devices, Ryan Beams, Wei-Chung Cheng, Andrea S. Kim, Aldo Badano Nov 2019

Transverse Chromatic Aberrations In Virtual Reality Devices, Ryan Beams, Wei-Chung Cheng, Andrea S. Kim, Aldo Badano

Frameless

We demonstrate a method for measuring the transverse chromatic aberration (TCA) in a virtual reality head-mounted display (VR HMD). This procedure was used to characterize the optical performance of the Oculus Go VR HMD. Results show a measurable TCA for angles larger than approximately 6◦ from the center of the field of view. TCA can be thought of as a wavelength dependent magnification, and as a result, the relative size of objects vary based on the rendering color. In addition, this leads to color changes in the image due to mixing with neighboring pixels, which impacts image quality. The test …

Gender Differences In Rates Of Anhedonia And The Effect Of Menstrual Cycles In University Students, Arianna Rueda Nov 2019

Gender Differences In Rates Of Anhedonia And The Effect Of Menstrual Cycles In University Students, Arianna Rueda

Content presented at the Roesch Social Sciences Symposium

Anhedonia is the lack of experiencing pleasure from pleasurable experiences (D'haenen, 1996) and is associated with the reward pathway in the brain (Langvik et al., 2016). Anhedonia can be further broken down into physical or social (Martino et al., 2018).

  • Physical anhedonia is the absence of pleasure from eating, drinking, or physical touch.
  • Social anhedonia is a lack of pleasure derived from social experiences.

Previous research has looked at gender differences in anhedonia with conflicting results.

  • One measure of anhedonic subtype of depression found a relation with positive affect and gender differences more than other measures of anhedonia (Langvik et …

Body Language "Says" More About Whether A Person Is Lying, Emily Scheiwiller, Shelbie Weightman

Content presented at the Roesch Social Sciences Symposium

The wording of a question can bias someone's perception of another person (Questionnaire design; Ulatwski, 2013).

  • Direct Questions
  • Indirect Questions
  • Social Awareness

Social Awareness Inventory (SAI) assesses individual differences in social awareness of emotion demonstrated by others (Sheldon, 1996).

Hypothesis 1:Indirect questioning as compared to direct questioning when evaluating an interviewee's dishonest responses will produce more accurate determinations of dishonesty that correspond with research-supported correlates of dishonesty.

Hypothesis 2: Questions designed to detect observer bias related to dishonest behaviors, compared to those related to interviewee verbal and nonverbal characteristics, as well as the observer’s expectations of interviewee behaviors will …

The growing global health threat of vaccine hesitancy is believed to be fueled by anti-vaccine movements around the world. Overall, the strong presence of anti-vaccination groups on the Internet, particularly social media, are important for bringing attention and attracting people to the cause. Such platforms are an ideal medium for the dissemination of anti-vaccination ideas, which often entail the spread of false or “fake” news and information questioning vaccine efficacy and safety. As this epidemic of online fake news is causing major disruptions in vaccine programs around the world, the current study employed the Heuristic Systematic model (HSM) to elucidate …

The Effect Of Therapy Dogs And Meditation On Student Stress, Nicole L. Beasley Nov 2019

The Effect Of Therapy Dogs And Meditation On Student Stress, Nicole L. Beasley

Content presented at the Roesch Social Sciences Symposium

Students experience many stressors throughout the semester. Student stress may arise from various facets of academic life (e.g. academics, financial, and relationship) (Dusselier et al., 2005). Most students report chronic stress (Pierceall & Keim, 2007).

Therapy dogs may lessen student stress. However, research on how therapy dogs reduce stress is mixed. Some research suggests therapy dogs only reduce psychological perception of stress while other research suggests physiological stress reduction.

Barker et al. (2016) measured stress with both psychological tests and physiological markers in students. Interacting with therapy dogs reduced the perceived stress but did not change the physiological markers of …

We want to see if there is a positive association with Conscious Discipline, or Social-Emotional Learning, and improved EF skills in children.

Composure: The adult provides children with techniques, such as active calming, to regulate their emotions. (Brain Smart Start and Safe Place)

Adult Assertiveness: The adult is assertive, which provides the structure a child needs to be successful. We would argue that if an adult is assertive and give5 concrete instructions to the children, it can help them better understand self-control and how to effectively achieve a goal. (Visual Routines, Visual Daily Schedule, and Time Machine)

Choices: When a …
