Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
“Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever” is the topic selected for the Scientometric study to assess the responsibilities of the global scientists through the measurement of the impact of their research publications. “Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever” affects the health of the society and particularly the young generation are suffering a lot and many of them destined to “Early Death”. The Scientometric study in this research reveals that only 646 publications were published from 2009 to 2018, which means the research contribution on “Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever” is very low. The country wise publications show that “India” leads the table with more number of publications than …

Instructional Strategies To Prepare Students For Success In Informal Learning Environments: Leveraging Metacognition And Critical Thinking To Develop Self-Regulated Learning Skills, Carolyn P. Commiso
Instructional Design Capstones Collection
This paper looks at how learning is evolving in the 21st century and what skills learners need to be successful in that environment. Based on existing research into the topic, this paper focuses on how learning is increasingly taking place in informal settings, through the lens of the Social Cognitive Learning and Cognitive Constructivism theories. The hypothesis is that students can be successful in these settings by mastering self-regulated learning strategies which can be developed through critical thinking and meta-cognitive skills. It assesses what instructional strategies can be used to develop these skills and enable continued learner success. In addition, …

Songbird Use Of Problem-Solving Feeders In Urban And Rural Areas, Kayce Miller
Songbird Use Of Problem-Solving Feeders In Urban And Rural Areas, Kayce Miller
College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations
Behavioral flexibility is important for animals to adapt to novel situations in their environment. It has been suggested that birds living in complex environments (e.g., urban areas) should be more flexible than conspecifics in less complex environments. Birds are a particularly well studied group, where novel foraging problems are used to assess flexibility and problem-solving performance of urban and rural animals of the same species; however, this is most frequently done in a lab setting with wild-caught birds originating from different habitats. Using a field-based method to test problem-solving performance should give additional insight into other factors influencing birds’ flexibility. …

Vaccine education for pediatric and family medicine residents is inadequate. Implementation of evidence-based instructional design methods for medical education is understudied. We conducted four focus groups with residents who had completed a novel immunization curriculum to explore their satisfaction with design, content and impact on confidence. Data were analyzed using thematic content analysis. Overall satisfaction with the curriculum was high. Residents valued the interactive design and content, reported improvement in confidence in discussing vaccines with parents, and shared recommendations for future iterations of the modules. Technical challenges were reported with the learning management system. Medical education modules developed using best …
Keep The Faith Not The Guilt: Demonization Of Sex Workers, Jessica Hodges
Keep The Faith Not The Guilt: Demonization Of Sex Workers, Jessica Hodges
Steeplechase: An ORCA Student Journal
Previous research shows that religiosity and attitudes about sexual topics are strongly correlated and typically negative. That is, as religiosity increases, views toward sexual topics tend to become more conservative or generally more negative in valence. However, current research also suggests that one’s sexual guilt may be the mediating influence in the relationship between religiosity and negative sexual attitudes. The present study seeks to replicate and extend research that examined the extent to which an individual's religiosity and sexual guilt influence their perspective of pornography and sex workers (Study 1). To replicate this (Study 2), a survey containing relevant measures …
Value-Laden Free Will, Lixing Miao
Value-Laden Free Will, Lixing Miao
Acta Cogitata: An Undergraduate Journal in Philosophy
In this paper, I deliver a value-laden concept of free will. This concept of free will depends on an insight into agential psychology: we generally act in light of the desire of the good and the conception of a good life. Since our actions are performed in relation to the motivational final end—a good human life, the value-laden concept of free will defines that an agent has free will in x-ing only if the agent is motivated in such a way that x-ing is genuinely conducive to a good life. The value-laden concept of free will does not aim at …
Political Obligation And Lockean Contract Theory, Samantha Fritz
Political Obligation And Lockean Contract Theory, Samantha Fritz
Acta Cogitata: An Undergraduate Journal in Philosophy
In John Locke’s Second Treatise of Government, he presents his notion of social contract theory: individuals come together, leave the state of perfect freedom, and consent to give up certain rights to the State so the State can protect its members. He grounds duties and obligations to the government on the basis of consent. Because one consents to the State, either tacitly or expressly, one has consented to taking on political obligations owed to the State. Locke also notes that individuals can withdraw consent and leave the State. This paper challenges the view that political obligation can exist under …

The Effects Of Seasonal Variations, El Niño-Southern Oscillation, And Climate Change On The Tuna-Dolphin Association, Caitlynn Birch, Michael D. Scott, Zhi-Yong Yin, Lisa T. Ballance
Theses
Tuna and dolphins swim together in the waters of the eastern tropical Pacific, and this association has long benefitted tuna fishermen and intrigued scientists. Although the tuna-dolphin association is often referred to as a “mystery,” much is known about the association. Yellowfin tuna are primarily caught with spotted dolphins and, to a lesser extent, spinner dolphins; historically the spotted dolphin has borne the brunt of the bycatch mortality. The tuna-dolphin association is thought to be a product of the distinct oceanography of the ETP: a shallow mixed layer, a thick oxygen minimum zone, and warm surface waters. As the mixed …

Testing A Decision Making Model For Nursing, Daniel Bruce Coble
Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to test a decision making model for nursing developed in a previous qualitative study. Concepts in the decision making model were creativity, experience, leadership, education, risk taking, and informatics. The Chinese philosophy of Cosmogony and chaos theory provided the theoretical framework for the model. Analysis of Decision Making in Nursing (ADMN), a tool developed for this study, incorporated a bipolar scale of 81 items. Pilot testing indicated adequate reliability and validity of the ADMN.
Academic Achievement In Children With New-Onset Seizures Or Asthma, Angela Marie Mcnelis
Academic Achievement In Children With New-Onset Seizures Or Asthma, Angela Marie Mcnelis
Dissertations
It has long been recognized that children with epilepsy have more learning difficulties in school than either children without seizures or children with other chronic disorders, such as asthma. Problems such as repeating a grade, receiving special services, and scoring poorly on standardized achievement tests are over-represented in children with epilepsy. Factors that lead to problems with academic underachievement are not well understood. Primary purposes of the study were to examine change in academic achievement over a 12-month period and to identify factors related to achievement in children with new-onset seizures. A secondary purpose was to examine differences in academic …

Individuals who are in recovery from addiction can find spiritual development to be helpful in their pursuit of sobriety. Some individuals have developed spirituality through a transition from negative religious coping (NRC) to positive religious coping (PRC). Prior to this study, no other researchers had focused on the factors that contribute to this transition from NRC to PRC. A qualitative methodology and explanatory case study research design was used to identify the factors that contributed to a transition from NRC to PRC during addiction recovery. Participants included five individuals who were in recovery from addiction and had experienced a transition …
Quality Or Quantity: Completion Rewards And Formative Assessments In Flipped Instruction Classes, Kurt Schmitz
Quality Or Quantity: Completion Rewards And Formative Assessments In Flipped Instruction Classes, Kurt Schmitz
International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning
Flipped instruction shifts the burden for engaging course content to the students. Moving these activities outside the classroom creates motivational challenges. This study investigates the role of formative assessments and completion rewards. Definitions are provided for flipped instruction and formative assessments. A classification of reward scores is offered to guide data collection in two field experiments. The study seeks to provide an empirical basis to guide use of completion rewards for flipped instruction classes. This study finds that completion rewards can increase quantity of formative assessment engagement. However, this change in quantity does not improve exam scores. The data suggests …
