Interpreting Average Effect Sizes: Never A Center Without A Spread, Thomas R. Guskey
Interpreting Average Effect Sizes: Never A Center Without A Spread, Thomas R. Guskey
Educational, School, and Counseling Psychology Faculty Publications
School leaders today are making important decisions regarding education innovations based on published average effect sizes, even though few understand exactly how effect sizes are calculated or what they mean. This article explains how average effect sizes are determined in meta-analyses and the importance of including measures of variability with any average effect size. By considering the variation in effect sizes among studies of the same innovation, education leaders can make better decisions about innovations and greatly increase the likelihood of achieving optimal results from implementation.

Background: According to the September 2015 Institute of Medicine report, Improving Diagnosis in Health Care, each of us is likely to experience one diagnostic error in our lifetime, often with devastating consequences. Traditionally, diagnostic decision making has been the sole responsibility of an individual clinician. However, diagnosis involves an interaction among interprofessional team members with different training, skills, cultures, knowledge, and backgrounds. Moreover, diagnostic error is prevalent in the interruption-prone environment, such as the emergency department, where the loss of information may hinder a correct diagnosis.
Objective: The overall purpose of this protocol is to improve team-based diagnostic …
Early Childhood Intervention Teachers' Beliefs And Use Of Peer Social Interaction Interventions, Elizabeth Howe
Early Childhood Intervention Teachers' Beliefs And Use Of Peer Social Interaction Interventions, Elizabeth Howe
Doctoral Dissertations
Teachers’ ability to facilitate social interactions between children in the early childhood classroom is necessary for the development of social competence in all children, including those with disabilities. Peer social interaction interventions are a group of interventions to promote social engagement by focusing on the reciprocal social exchanges between children with and without disabilities. However, the literature base around teachers’ use of peer social interaction interventions indicates teachers use these practices infrequently and their use is related to their beliefs about the acceptability and feasibility of the interventions. This study validates prior research related to teachers’ beliefs and use of …
Influence Of Alumni Affinity Groups On Alumni Engagement And Alumni Giving, Gary R. Johnson
Influence Of Alumni Affinity Groups On Alumni Engagement And Alumni Giving, Gary R. Johnson
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
A student’s college experience lasts only a finite amount of time, but their role as alumni lasts for a lifetime. Alumni play an important role in higher education. The future financial success of a college or university is largely based on involvement and financial support by the school’s alumni. The purpose of this research was to learn about the role alumni affinity groups play in engaging alumni with the school and if they have the ability to impact alumni giving.
The dissertation data was collected using a qualitative methods research approach. Alumni data was gathered from two public universities from …

Science and engineering rest on the concept of reproducibility. An important question for any study is: are the results reproducible? Can the results be recreated independently by other researchers or professionals? Research results need to be independently reproduced and validated before they are accepted as fact or theory. Across numerous fields like psychology, computer systems, and water resources there are problems to reproduce research results (Aarts et al. 2015; Collberg et al. 2014; Hutton et al. 2016; Stagge et al. 2019; Stodden et al. 2018). This editorial examines the challenges to reproduce research results and suggests community practices to overcome …

Copyright, Fair Use, Scholarly Communication, etc.
Over the last thirty years, digitally-networked technologies have disrupted traditional media, turning business models on their head and changing the conditions for the creation, packaging and distribution of content. Yet, scholarly communication still looks remarkably as it did in the pre-digital age. The primary unit of dissemination remains the research article (or book in some disciplines), and today’s articles still bear a remarkable resemblance to those that populated the pages of Oldenburg’s Philosophical Transactions 350 years ago. In an age of such disruptive innovation, it is striking how little digital technologies have impacted scholarly publishing; and this is also somewhat …

Social And Political Factors Influencing Green Energy Transition, Rachel Schwom
Social And Political Factors Influencing Green Energy Transition, Rachel Schwom
Sustainability Seminar Series
Society’s dependence on fossil fuels is harming humans and the environment and we must transition our energy system to be more economically, socially and environmentally sustainable. While the economics driving energy transitions are important, sociologists and political scientists have highlighted that these transitions are social and political processes. This talk will provide examples of research that has highlight the social and political factors that influence how people and institutions interact with the market and our energy systems. Those factors include public opinion and social movement pressure, industry resistance or support, political opportunity structure, and windows of opportunity. Cases will include …

Veterans' Path To Reintegration, Anthony D. Terry
McNair Scholars Research Journal
Military service members transitioning to civilian life in general, and college specifically, may experience significant difficulty losing their individual identity as a service member. Past research has shown that there are a number of challenges in transitioning, including finding a home, reintegrating with family, and dealing with new disabilities (Brunger, Serrato, & Ogden, 2013). This project reviewed how veterans’ sense of identity can change throughout the process of reintegration into civilian life and the problems that surround this change, both for veterans and their families. Specific attention was directed to a successful veteran transition to college and strategies for facilitating …
The Impact Of Mentoring School-Aged Youth Facing Challenges In School, Brianna M. Jones
The Impact Of Mentoring School-Aged Youth Facing Challenges In School, Brianna M. Jones
McNair Scholars Research Journal
According to Owings (1988), the term “at-risk” refers to a student who is more likely to fail in school based on factors such as low academic achievement, attendance, or behavioral issues, however other factors place students at-risk, such as substance abuse, violence, trauma, and involvement with the criminal justice system. This literature review examines the impact of mentoring as an intervention to support students who are facing academic, social, or emotional challenges in school. These students may be at greater risk of entering the school-to-prison pipeline (STPP). There is a gap in the literature on how mentoring programs can promote …

Exploring The Impact Of Interventions In K-12 Schools, Desiree A. Drake
McNair Scholars Research Journal
This research will examine how recent disciplinary, mentoring, and testing-based interventions may impact the educational outcomes of youth facing challenges in K-12 schools. In the United States, failing educational systems may unintentionally channel poor and minority youth toward a trajectory that makes them vulnerable to involvement in the juvenile justice system, due to punitive disciplinary policies and practices that push students out of school. This exclusion from school can put students at greater risk of entering the “school-to-prison pipeline,” which has garnered nationwide attention and is an issue facing schools across the country (Witt, 2007).
The impact of exclusion and …
The Association Of Breastfeeding Practices And Postpartum Depression Risk, Christine Toledo
The Association Of Breastfeeding Practices And Postpartum Depression Risk, Christine Toledo
Open Access Dissertations
Postpartum depression (PPD) is a significant maternal health problem afflicting nearly 800,000 new mothers in the United States every year. Mothers suffering from PPD endure feelings of sadness, anxiety, extreme fatigue that makes it difficult to care for one’s self or for others, feeling worthless, and even thoughts of harming oneself or child. Mothers who are not treated for PPD may have negative health outcomes, including difficulty bonding with and caring for their children, chronic anxiety, and are at an increased risk for substance abuse. PPD is considered the single greatest risk factor for maternal suicide and infanticide. The important …
The Anatomy Of Violent Crime: How Judicial Analysis For “Crimes Of Violence” Impacts Juveniles When Applied To The Federal Juvenile Delinquency And Transfer Statute, Anna Derkacz
Seventh Circuit Review
In 1984, the Comprehensive Crime Control Act revolutionized sentencing in the federal system by imposing mandatory minimum sentences for offenders who committed criminal offenses, increasing penalties for repeat offenses considered to be violent crimes. Since then, courts across the country have labored over defining what constitutes a “violent crime.” In the federal court system, juveniles can be transferred to adult proceedings under The Juvenile Transfer Statute. This statutes gives the government authority to transfer minors to adult court if he or she meets three conditions, one of which is whether the juvenile has a prior conviction of a “violent crime.” …
Moderate Likability And Popularity: Understand Peer Status Through Casual Relationships, Ziyue Cui
Moderate Likability And Popularity: Understand Peer Status Through Casual Relationships, Ziyue Cui
College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations
Peer status has been extensively studied in the past few decades. Popularity and likability are recognized as two distinct dimensions of peer status. However, the operationalization of likability has overlooked moderate liking resulting from casual and friendly relationships. The present study assessed moderate liking through peer ratings and examined its relation with popularity. In Study 1, the correlation between popularity and moderate liking and the correlation between popularity and likability derived from the traditional sociometric method were compared. Two Greek chapters were recruited. Thirty one participants nominated chapter members whom they liked the most and least and whom they thought …

Siblings shape each other's attitudes and behaviors during childhood and adolescence; however, it is less clear if siblings continue to influence each other in emerging adulthood. This study investigated the extent to which emerging adults modeled their siblings in domains of adulthood attainment. Participants included 1,750 emerging adults from the United States between the ages of 18 and 29 years. Data were collected via Amazon Mechanical Turk. Findings showed that perceptions of siblings' adulthood attainment were positively related to emerging adults' development in those same domains. Moreover, the extent to which emerging adults modeled their siblings enhanced these associations; neither …
Juvenile Life Without Parole: How The Supreme Court Of Ohio Should Interpret Montgomery V. Louisiana, Grace O. Hurley
Juvenile Life Without Parole: How The Supreme Court Of Ohio Should Interpret Montgomery V. Louisiana, Grace O. Hurley
Cleveland State Law Review
Regardless of the numerous differences between juveniles and adults, some states, including the State of Ohio, continue to impose upon juvenile homicide offenders one of the harshest forms of punishment: life without parole. In 2016, the United States Supreme Court decided Montgomery v. Louisiana, and in doing so, the Court reiterated its previous contention that a sentence of juvenile life without parole should only be imposed upon juvenile homicide offenders whose crimes reflect "irreparable corruption." The Supreme Court of Ohio has yet to apply the Court’s Montgomery decision, but this Note suggests that if it does, the court should …

Burnout, a state of vital exhaustion, has frequently been related to work-related stress and job dissatisfaction. Given the emotionally and physically challenging nature of their work, high rates of burnout have been reported among health care professionals. This may put them at a higher risk for of suffering from adverse mental health outcomes, including depression, anxiety and stress. In our study, we aim to assess the prevalence i of and associations among burnout and job dissatisfaction and adverse mental health outcomes in a developing country, where the challenges faced by the health care system are unique. Facilities are over-burdened and …

The Influence Of Teacher Technology Self-Efficacy On Computer-Assisted Instruction In Urban Elementary Schools, Randall L. Johnson
The Influence Of Teacher Technology Self-Efficacy On Computer-Assisted Instruction In Urban Elementary Schools, Randall L. Johnson
CUP Ed.D. Dissertations
Teachers are facing the challenge of implementing division and school-level technology integration practices while meeting the needs of all students. This qualitative research study sought to discover how teacher technology self-efficacy influences computer-assisted instruction in urban elementary schools in Virginia. The Technology Proficiency Self-Assessment (TPSA) questionnaire was administered to certified core-content teachers at sixteen urban elementary school sites in Virginia in order to gauge teachers’ current level of technology self-efficacy. Three self-efficacy groups were formed based on data collected from the questionnaire: low-to-medium, medium-to-high, and very high. From that population, purposive sampling was used to determine the participants for the …

Behavioral Agent-Based Framework For Interacting Financial Markets, Heba M. Ezzat Dr.
Business Administration
Purpose – This paper aims at developing a behavioral agent-based model for interacting financial markets. Additionally, the effect of imposing Tobin taxes on market dynamics is explored. Design/methodology/approach – The agent-based approach is followed to capture the highly complex, dynamic nature of financial markets. The model represents the interaction between two different financial markets located in two countries. The artificial markets are populated with heterogeneous, boundedly rational agents. There are two types of agents populating the markets; market makers and traders. Each time step, traders decide on which market to participate in and which trading strategy to follow. Traders can …
Intellectual Property For Breakfast: Market Power And Informative Symbols In The Marketplace, P. Sean Morris
Intellectual Property For Breakfast: Market Power And Informative Symbols In The Marketplace, P. Sean Morris
Cleveland State Law Review
This Article continues to examine an important question: are trademarks a source of market power, or, put differently, when are trademarks an antitrust problem? This fundamental question is a cause of division among antitrust and intellectual property law scholars. However, by raising the question and presenting some scenarios that can provide answers, my hope is that contemporary antitrust and intellectual property scholars can explore some of its implications. As part of my own quest to address this question, I explore the proposition that creative deception and the wealth-generating capacity of trademarks are unorthodox elements that actually contribute to allegations of …
