Personality Disruption As Mental Torture: The Cia, Interrogational Abuse, And The U.S. Torture Act, David Luban, Katherine S. Newell
Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works
This Article is a contribution to the torture debate. It argues that the abusive interrogation tactics used by the United States in what was then called the “global war on terrorism” are, unequivocally, torture under U.S. law. To some readers, this might sound like déjà vu all over again. Hasn’t this issue been picked over for nearly fifteen years? It has, but we think the legal analysis we offer has been mostly overlooked. We argue that the basic character of the CIA’s interrogation of so-called “high-value detainees” has been misunderstood: both lawyers and commentators have placed far too much emphasis …

Al-Arabi: Journal of Teaching Arabic as a Foreign Language
Teacher is the most important element in education. The renewed teacher in the teaching of Arabic to non-native speakers is the conscious teacher of the era of globalization. He is a mayor and a key element in teaching Arabic. If the teacher reconciles all educational processes. It must be renewed its competencies and capabilities because the teacher must think in the future mentality of the future or the mentality of the past. This qualitative descriptive research aims to discover the competencies of the renewed teacher and its characteristics in teaching Arabic to non-native speakers, and to know its challenges today …
The Role Of Career And Wage Incentives In Labor Productivity: Evidence From A Two-Stage Field Experiment In Malawi, Hyuncheol Kim, Seonghoon Kim, Thomas Kim
The Role Of Career And Wage Incentives In Labor Productivity: Evidence From A Two-Stage Field Experiment In Malawi, Hyuncheol Kim, Seonghoon Kim, Thomas Kim
Research Collection School Of Economics
We study how career and wage incentives affect labor productivity through self-selection and incentive effect channels using a two-stage field experiment in Malawi. First, recent secondary school graduates were hired with either career or wage incentives. After employment, a half of workers with career incentives randomly received wage incentives, and a half of workers with wage incentives randomly received career incentives. Career incentives attract higher-performing workers than wage incentives, but do not increase productivity conditional on selection. Wage incentives increase productivity for those recruited through career incentives. Observable characteristics are limited in explaining selection effects of entry-level workers.

Physical Activity Prevalence Among Migrants In United Arab Emirate, Rowaa Elhidia Elobaid Abd-Allatif
Dissertations
Insufficient physical activity is a leading risk for non-communicable diseases (NCDs). Few data were available on the physical activity levels of migrants in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). This study aimed to determine leisure time physical activity levels and their associated socio-demographic determinants and NCD risk factors among migrants in Al Ain, UAE. A random sample of male South Asian migrants (n=1375) (76.4% response rate) and female South Asian, Arab, and Philippines migrants (n=555) (75% participation rate) was recruited from the government Visa Screening Center in Al Ain, UAE. An adapted version of the WHO STEPS Survey with a short …
Helping Academic Struggling Elementary School Students Succeed, Dulce M. Carmona
Helping Academic Struggling Elementary School Students Succeed, Dulce M. Carmona
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
There is a push to focus on academics for struggling elementary school students to be successful. Research has shown that teachers and tutors who use various teaching methods have helped students to be successful in their academic performance. This senior capstone project explores how struggling students can achieve success in school and at the same time can catch up with their classmates. Through a literature review, interviews and surveys conducted with two elementary school teachers, a coordinator and students in Monterey County, the results reveal how beneficial it is for students to have extra help from teachers and tutors. In …

Reading Rainbow: Give Hope To Struggling Readers, Celia Higer
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
For this Senior Capstone Project, the researcher investigated what stakeholders had to say about reading difficulties, the Irlen Method, and how to increase awareness and access to the Irlen Method in schools. Based on analysis of the data and the relevant research literature, the researcher used what she learned to formulate an action that responded to the focus issue. This is important to students and other stakeholders that have reading difficulties.
Finding Identity Through Literature, Darren Bartholomew
Finding Identity Through Literature, Darren Bartholomew
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
The focus of this Capstone Project is on how upper-grade elementary students view children’s literature and its connection to self identity. The stakeholder perspectives that were obtained include students in upper and lower elementary grades and their teachers. According to the data analysis, younger elementary students desired to read more stories about anthropomorphized characters that are going through similar life situations. Older elementary students exhibited an overall desire to read books about fantastical stories and characters. However, when dealing with pressing issues both groups desired to read stories about characters who were similar to them in gender, age, ethnicity, or …

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
This essay will explore the musical culture and customs that come from the Caribbean islands of Trinidad and Tobago. Some of the traditions examined include the usage of the steel pan as a percussive instrument, the evolution of Carnival music in Trinidad, and the various types of poetic styles used in calypso songs. In an effort to understand the development and importance of musical practices in Trinidad and Tobago, it will be vital to take an anthropological and historical look at the two islands. This means learning about how the various cultures of people came to exist in Trinidad and …

Teaching College Foster Youth How To Use Mindfulness To Cope With Stress, Jiovana Xasel Vallejan Lugo
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
Research has found that all foster youth face some sort of trauma at least once in their life, leading them to experience mental stress, emotion dysregulation, and depression during the transition to adulthood (Valdez, Bailey, Santuzzi, & Lilly, 2014). Many of the youth are not aware of the effects of stress on mental and physical well-being and how to cope with the stress they are feeling. Also, many of them are not aware of their mental state or how to cope with the stress they are feeling. College youth are not only affected mentally by stress, but also physically. They …

Implementing Homeless Youth Professional Development Workshops In Salinas, Mikayla Spooner
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
The homeless population in Salinas has risen dramatically over the past few years, and child care workers consistently do not know how to serve homeless youth. My capstone project created a professional development workshop on homelessness in Salinas. This workshop was given at the Salinas YMCA for all child care staff. The point of this project was to inform child care professionals about how widespread homelessness is in Salinas. These professionals were able to identify how homelessness adversely affects the stages of development in children and families and how to better support them in child care settings. For child care …
Teaching Early Prevention Of Substance Abuse, Maria G. Camacho
Teaching Early Prevention Of Substance Abuse, Maria G. Camacho
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
There has been an increase in youth substance abuse in the US. Research shows that substance abuse leads to consequences such as lower education, lower opportunities to succeed, and overdoses (Freeman et al., 2018). Use of alcohol, marijuana and prescription drugs can also lead to use of heavier drugs like heroin, cocaine, and methenamine that have higher addiction rates (Freeman et al., 2018). One solution is to create early prevention programs that target children before they are heavily exposed to alcohol and drugs. For my capstone project, I presented a workshop to parents in South Monterey County on how they …

#Queer: Community, Communication, And Identity In The Digital Age, Margaret Allen-Young
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
The creation and facilitation of community among LGBTQ+ people has always been necessary as a means of support, protection, and affirmation in a discriminatory society. The common perception of this community imagines the migration of people from rural areas to urban meccas like San Francisco and New York in search of likeminded people. However, the advent of new technology has allowed for community building and organizing to occur more easily without face-to-face contact. In this paper I utilize existing literature, including a large study on queer rural populations, and real-world examples such as the platform Tumblr to explore the evolution …
Increasing Awareness Of Homework Assistance Resources Among Elementary School Aged Children, Leslie Castillo
Increasing Awareness Of Homework Assistance Resources Among Elementary School Aged Children, Leslie Castillo
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
Schools have the expectation that parents are to provide homework assistance at home in order for their children to be academically successful (Green, Walker, Hoover-Demsey & Sandler, 2017). However, not all parents are able to do this. For example, some parents may be immigrant families who work very long hours for minimum wage, as is the case for my of the parents at Mary Chapa Academy, an elementary school in the town of Greenfield, California. Also, many of these immigrant parents do not speak English, making it difficult for them to help their children with homework. Therefore, I conducted a …

Entrepreneurship can be an indicator of the development of a country. Unfortunately, in Indonesia the number of entrepreneurs is still low. So, it needs to be efforts to optimize various fields that are integrated with entrepreneurship. One of the aspect is education that closely related to scientific research. The existence of indexing portal for scientific publications such as the Garuda portal, which optimizes the progress of information technology can help researchers not only in the academic world, the general public can obtain various data that can be used as a basis for developing programs as a solutive form of problems …

Study Group Travel Behaviour Patterns From Large-Scale Smart Card Data, Xiancai Tian, Baihua Zheng
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
In this paper, we aim at studying the group travel behaviour (GTB) patterns from large-scale auto fare collection (AFC) data. GTB is defined as two or more commuters intentionally and regularly traveling together from an origin to a destination. We propose a method to identify GTB accurately and efficiently and apply our method to the Singapore AFC dataset to reveal the GTB patterns of Singapore commuters. The case study proves that our method is able to identify GTB patterns more accurately and efficiently than the state-of-the-art.

Alliance on Aging is a nonprofit agency in Salinas, California. It was established in 1970, and they help serve the needs of the senior citizen community by offering multiple services. Working professionals experience high levels of stress in the workplace. Although there are many contributing factors for high stress in the workplace, the main factors at play are the lack of self-care and lack of support Zastrow (pg. 332, 2015). Because working professionally in the human services field experience high stress the consequences they may face are burnout, high turnover rates, and poor overall health. The capstone project will assess …

Neuroticism And Stressful Life Events: Probing Mechanisms Underlying Vulnerability To Stress-Related Depression, Erin Bondy
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Elevated neuroticism (N) potentiates the depressogenic effects of stressful life events (SLEs). We first replicate this association using longitudinal data (N=971 older adults) from the St. Louis Personality and Aging Network (SPAN) study. Here, SLEs prospectively predicted future depressive symptoms, especially among those reporting elevated N, even after accounting for prior depressive symptoms and previous SLE exposure (NxSLE interaction: p=0.016, ΔR2=0.003). These findings were further replicated in cross-sectional analyses of the Duke Neurogenetics Study (DNS), a young adult college sample with neuroimaging data (n=1,343: NxSLE interaction: p=0.019, ΔR2=0.003). Because evidence suggests that stress may promote depression …
The Unique Effects Of Relatively Recent Conflict On Cognitive Control, Jackson Colvett
The Unique Effects Of Relatively Recent Conflict On Cognitive Control, Jackson Colvett
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
In tasks such as Stroop, our past experiences with conflict influence our ability to attend to goal-relevant information and ignore irrelevant information. There exists evidence that conflict experiences on at least two timescales affect cognitive control. The “immediate” timescale is evidenced by congruency sequence effects while the “long” timescale is evidenced by list-wide proportion congruence effects. What remains underspecified is whether relatively recent experiences with conflict may also uniquely influence cognitive control and how experiences on different timescales are weighted. The present, pre-registered experiments aimed to assess the role of relatively recent conflict by examining the potential effects of an …
Double Trouble: How Children And Adults Decide When To Use Double Consonants, Ruth Caputo
Double Trouble: How Children And Adults Decide When To Use Double Consonants, Ruth Caputo
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Consonant doubling is a difficult pattern in the English writing system to master because it is inconsistent. In English two-syllable words, consonants are typically doubled after short vowels, a phonological context, but not after any vowel spelled with more than one letter, a graphotactic context. Knowledge about these contexts may help children learn when to use a single or double consonant. Previous theories on spelling development argue that children learn to spell in stages, without learning about phonological or orthographic context until late in the learning process. This study builds on previous research suggesting that children learn spelling patterns through …
Functional Dissociations Revealed By Representational Similarity Analysis Of Color-Word Stroop, Michael Freund
Functional Dissociations Revealed By Representational Similarity Analysis Of Color-Word Stroop, Michael Freund
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
The color-word Stroop task is often used in cognitive neuroscience as a common platform for both theoretical and experimental approaches to cognitive control. Yet traditionally, there has been tension between these two approaches. Theoretical models of Stroop have focused on representation: for example, how distributed and overlapping representations of the two stimulus dimensions (color, word) are prioritized, and how conflict between these dimen- sions is represented and used to regulate control. In contrast, neuroimaging experiments have primarily focused on ‘univariately’ (uniformly) mapping the effects of conflict to par- ticular brain regions. This focus on univariate changes in brain activity limits …
Associations Between Prenatal Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor Exposure, Depression And Brain Morphology In Middle Childhood, Allison Moreau
Associations Between Prenatal Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor Exposure, Depression And Brain Morphology In Middle Childhood, Allison Moreau
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Objective: Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs) are one of the most widely used prescribed medicine by pregnant women. A mixed literature suggests that prenatal SSRI exposure may increase depression risk among offspring. Method: Using data from children (n=11,076) who completed the baseline session of the Adolescent Brain and Cognitive Development (ABCD) study, we examined whether prenatal exposure to SSRIs is associated with child depression and variability in depression-related brain structures (i.e., hippocampus, amygdala, nucleus accumbens, caudate, putamen; rostral anterior cingulate; rostral and caudal middle frontal, superior frontal, and lateral and medical orbitofrontal cortices). Analyses were cross-sectional and included the following …
