Effects Of Interviewer Familiarity And Supportiveness On Children's Recall Across Repeated Interviews, Sonja P. Brubacher, Debra A. Poole, Jason J. Dickinson, David La Rooy, Zsófia A. Szojka, Martine B. Powell

Department of Psychology Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Objectives: Child witnesses often describe their experiences across multiple interviews. It is unknown whether talking with a familiar interviewer increases disclosures, however, or whether any benefits of a familiar interviewer could be achieved by ensuring that interviewers (regardless of familiarity) behave in socially supportive ways. This study tested the effects of interviewer familiarity and social support on children's reports of an adult's transgressions. Hypotheses: We predicted that familiarity and supportiveness would increase transgression reports at a second interview and that children who spoke with familiar, supportive interviewers would disclose the most transgressions. Method: Children (N = 160, 5 to 9 …

Political Polarization And Long-Term Change In Public Support For Environmental Spending, Eric W. Johnson, Philip Schwadel Dec 2019

Political Polarization And Long-Term Change In Public Support For Environmental Spending, Eric W. Johnson, Philip Schwadel

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

Public support for environmental protection has evinced declines in recent years that are widely attributed to growing antipathy among self-identified Republicans. Fractures in what was long considered broad and enduring support for the environment in the United States have called attention to the broader sociopolitical context in which individual opinion on the environment is formed, and especially the role of political parties and their leaders in shaping opinion. Empirical analyses of environmental support, however, remain strongly focused on individual-level correlates of support. We apply recent methodological advances in age-period-cohort models to scrutinize changes in Americans’ willingness to pay more for …

Doing Family: The Reproduction Of Heterosexuality In Accounts Of Parenthood, Emily Kazyak, Nicholas K. Park

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

The cultural and legal landscape in the United States has shifted towards increased recognition of LGBQ-parent families. This shift raises questions about the everyday experiences of LGBQ parents and whether the cultural and legal changes also manifest in diminished experiences of discrimination. Drawing on data from 74 interviews with LGBQ parents, we analyze their accounts of whether they are read as a parent by others in their daily interactions. Our findings reveal the ways in which heterosexuality is a key component of how membership to the category of ‘parent’ is produced in social interactions. Our findings also illustrate how assumptions …

Reading Scripture: Developing Intimacy With God, The Church, And Community, Tammy Janiece Jacko

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

By addressing the biblical literacy that results from not reading Scripture, and lack of discipline, Christians will experience spiritual growth, maturity, and a Christian worldview as a result of applying proper exegesis and hermeneutics of Scripture. The purpose of this Doctor of Ministry thesis project is to help Christians read the Bible by engaging in proper biblical interpretation. According to Fee and Stuart, “a text cannot mean what it could never have meant for its original readers/hearers. The interpretation of the biblical text is what the original writer had first spoken or written,” directly from God; therefore, developing the skills …

The Innocent Game, Kibaek Sung Dec 2019

The Innocent Game, Kibaek Sung

Theses

Everyone has an innocent childhood. People often reminisce about the old days, pursuing happiness today rather than tomorrow's worries and anxieties. Innocence is an expression of the good value inherent in man, which breaks down the walls and loosens tensions between people. However, childhood innocence is weakened and fainted after continual exposure to the world. The world we live in is not simple or tolerant enough to let people live as an innocent child. Just like games, the situations of today and tomorrow can be completely different depending on how we play on the gameboard of life. The current society …

Tracing The History Of Racial Injustice In Policing And Working Towards Justice Through Data Analysis, Emily Gollub Dec 2019

Tracing The History Of Racial Injustice In Policing And Working Towards Justice Through Data Analysis, Emily Gollub

Theses

There is an extensive history of racial disparity in the criminal justice system that has influenced the issue of racial bias in policing which continues to be a prominent issue even up to this day. The Sentencing Project (2008) explains that racial disparity “exists when the proportion of a racial or ethnic group within the control of the system is greater than the proportion of such groups in the general population” (1). It is important to note that there is a difference between the modern use of “disparity” and the historic subjugation and control. Back in the 1600s to the …

A Descriptive Study Of Religious Engagement And The Internalization Of Religious Beliefs Of 12th-Grade High-School Students Who Attended Kairos Retreats And Fourth-Day Follow-Up Activities As Juniors In Five U.S. Jesuit All-Male High Schools, Chris Miller

Doctoral Dissertations

The Kairos retreat is popular among upperclassmen at Jesuit high schools across the nation. Kairos, or “God’s Time,” is a religious retreat grounded in Christian incarnational theology and the overall theology of the retreat is love in action, and its participants are challenged to “live the fourth” day, which becomes the never-ending day. Even though there has been a trend across the nation in the first decade of the 21st century within Jesuit high schools to move the retreat to the junior level, there is no empirical research examining the spiritual effects on the individual student of moving the Kairos …

Exploring The State-Of-Receptivity For Mhealth Interventions, Florian Künzler, Varun Mishra, Jan-Niklas Kramer, David Kotz, Elgar Fleisch, Tobias Kowatsch

Dartmouth Scholarship

Recent advancements in sensing techniques for mHealth applications have led to successful development and deployments of several mHealth intervention designs, including Just-In-Time Adaptive Interventions (JITAI). JITAIs show great potential because they aim to provide the right type and amount of support, at the right time. Timing the delivery of a JITAI such as the user is receptive and available to engage with the intervention is crucial for a JITAI to succeed. Although previous research has extensively explored the role of context in users’ responsiveness towards generic phone notiications, it has not been thoroughly explored for actual mHealth interventions. In this …

Testing The Retrospective Pretest With High School Youth In Out-Of-School Time Programs, Jill Young, Leanne Kallemeyn Dec 2019

Testing The Retrospective Pretest With High School Youth In Out-Of-School Time Programs, Jill Young, Leanne Kallemeyn

Journal of Youth Development

Practitioners and evaluators face several constraints in conducting rigorous evaluations to determine program effect. Researchers have offered the retrospective pretest/posttest design as a remedy to curb response-shift bias and better estimate program effects. This article presents an example of how After School Matters (ASM) tested the use of retrospective pretest/posttest design for evaluating out-of-school time (OST) programs for high school youth participants. Differences between traditional pretest and retrospective pretest scores were statistically significant, but effect sizes were negligible, indicating that both pretests yielded similar results. Interviews with youth led to 3 key findings that have implications for ASM using retrospective …

Using Experience Industry Strategies To Increase Quality Of Youth Program Experiences, Allen Taggart, Gary Ellis, Jingxian Jiang, Andrew Lacanienta

Journal of Youth Development

We evaluated 4 “experience industry” strategies for enhancing the quality of immediate experiences for 4-H youth: theming, adding multisensory experiences, personalizing interactions, and providing memorabilia. These strategies are commonly used by theme parks, restaurants, resorts, attractions, and other experience industry organizations, but their application to youth services is sporadic. 4-H youth (n = 30) participated in a series of 8 outdoor recreation activity sessions. Each activity session, 1 per week for 8 consecutive weeks, was structured using a unique combination of the 4 strategies. Participants completed questionnaires measuring 5 dimensions of experience quality after each activity session. Theme and personalization …

Youth Leadership Development In The Start2finish Running & Reading Club, Majidullah Shaikh, Corliss Bean, Tanya Forneris

Journal of Youth Development

Researchers have asserted that offering intentional leadership roles to youth can help them to develop life skills (e.g., communication, decision-making); however, few physical-activity-based positive youth development programs provide youth these intentional leadership roles, and little research has explored the impact of these opportunities on youth who take them up. The purpose of this study was to understand the developmental experiences of youth leaders in a physical-activity-based positive youth development program. Sixteen youth leaders (M age= 13.37, SD = 1.36) from 4 sites of the Start2Finish Running & Reading Club participated in semi-structured interviews to discuss their experiences as junior coaches. …

Lesson Study Model Of 4-H Professional Development: Data-Driven Improvements To Educator Practice, Lynn Schmitt-Mcquitty, Steven Worker, Martin Smith

Journal of Youth Development

Educator professional development in the 4-H Youth Development Program needs improvement. Lesson study, an iterative and educator-centered approach to professional development, has proven to be effective in school-based settings; however, research on the model in youth development programs is limited. The present study investigated the use of lesson study with professional Cooperative Extension staff, adult 4-H volunteers, and teenage 4-H volunteers in different 4-H contexts in 3 state programs. Findings revealed improvements in educators’ data-driven decision-making, content knowledge, lesson planning and implementation, and social connections across all contexts. To work effectively within the 4-H context, however, some adaptations to the …

Learning From The Past To Educate The Future: An Analysis Of The Modern Classical School, Miranda Boljat Dec 2019

Learning From The Past To Educate The Future: An Analysis Of The Modern Classical School, Miranda Boljat

Senior Honors Theses

Classical schooling combines the wisdom of thousands of years of learning with the knowledge necessary to succeed in today’s world. Despite the antiquity of some of these ideas, the movement has continued to grow in both number of schools and also number of students attending, measuring almost 100 new schools each decade since 1993. One of the motives for this growth is how Classical schools utilize a curriculum which includes the trivium, Latin, and the Great Books of Western Civilization. Together, these elements of the curriculum lead to improved test scores and general college readiness.

Exploration Of Human Nature In The Federalist Papers, Jenna Ashley Salzman Dec 2019

Exploration Of Human Nature In The Federalist Papers, Jenna Ashley Salzman

Honors College

The Federalist Papers are the canon of American political thought. Scholars have been dissecting their meaning for 250 years. Much of the analysis has focused on the structure of government and the aim for liberty and freedom. A smaller amount focused on the presentation of human nature found within the writings. To understand human nature is to understand how a government should be established and administered. This paper seeks to examine how the Federalist writers Alexander Hamilton and James Madison understood human nature by comparing their writings to John Locke, Thomas Hobbes, and David Hume. I argue that the writers …

Culturally, in America, tattoos are associated with a lower socioeconomic status and education level. Additionally, women with tattoos tend to be judged more harshly, with more perceptions of deviant behavior compared to …
