Makȟóčhe Wašté, The Beautiful Country: An Indigenous Landscape Perspective, Dakota Wind Goodhouse

History, Philosophy, and Religious Studies

The Očhéthi Šakówiŋ (Seven Council Fires; “Great Sioux Nation”) occupied an area from the woodlands to the Great Plains. The landscape and the wind influenced their language and culture in a way that suggests a long occupation. Major landmarks like Ȟesápa (Black Hills), Matȟó Thípila (Bear Lodge; “Devils Tower”), Pahá Makȟáska (White Earth Butte; White Butte, ND), and Oǧúǧa Owápi (Images Burned Into The Stone; Jeffers Petroglyphs, MN) were woven into the cultural identity of the Očhéthi Šakówiŋ. The pictographic record, traditional song, and oral tradition recall events like first contact with the horse at the Čhaŋsáŋsaŋ Ožáte (White Birch …

Genomic Analysis Of Septoria Nodorum Blotch Susceptibility Genes Snn1 And Snn2 In Wheat, Wsjm Sudeshi Lakmali Seneviratne Jan 2019

Genomic Analysis Of Septoria Nodorum Blotch Susceptibility Genes Snn1 And Snn2 In Wheat, Wsjm Sudeshi Lakmali Seneviratne

Genomics and Bioinformatics

Septoria nodorum blotch is a disease of wheat caused by the necrotrophic fungus Parastagonospora nodorum. In the wheat-P. nodorum pathosystem, recognition of pathogen-produced necrotrophic effectors (NEs) by dominant host genes leads to host cell death, which allows the pathogen to gain nutrients and proliferate. To date, nine host gene-NE interactions have been reported in this pathosystem. Among them, the Snn2-SnTox2 interaction has shown to be important in both seedling and adult plant susceptibility. A saturated genetic linkage map was developed using a segregating population of recombinant inbred lines and a high-resolution map was then developed using F2 plants derived from …

Burnout: Moving Beyond The Status Quo, Renzo Bianchi, Irvin Sam Schonfeld, Éric Laurent Jan 2019

Burnout: Moving Beyond The Status Quo, Renzo Bianchi, Irvin Sam Schonfeld, Éric Laurent

Publications and Research

Burnout has been defined as a job-induced syndrome combining emotional exhaustion, depersonalization/cynicism, and a sense of reduced personal accomplishment. In this article, we expand on past analyses of burnout by reviewing key, yet overlooked, problems affecting the construct. We concomitantly examine the implications of these problems for the overall validity of burnout research. Our work shows that burnout research is undermined by 4 main problems. First, what constitutes a case of burnout is unclear. Second, the basic conceptualization and operationalization of burnout are ill aligned. Third, burnout is unlikely to be the specifically job-induced syndrome it has been posited to …

New Perspectives On The Schrödinger-Pauli Theory Of Electrons: Part Ii: Application To The Triplet State Of A Quantum Dot In A Magnetic Field, Marlina Slamet, Viraht Sahni Jan 2019

New Perspectives On The Schrödinger-Pauli Theory Of Electrons: Part Ii: Application To The Triplet State Of A Quantum Dot In A Magnetic Field, Marlina Slamet, Viraht Sahni

Publications and Research

The Schrödinger-Pauli (SP) theory of electrons in the presence of a static electromagnetic field can be described from the perspective of the individual electron via its equation of motion or 'Quantal Newtonian' first law. The law is in terms of 'classical' fields whose sources are quantum-mechanical expectation values of Hermitian operators taken with respect to the wave function. The law states that the sum of the external and internal fields experienced by each electron vanishes. The external field is the sum of the binding electrostatic and Lorentz fields. The internal field is the sum of fields representative of properties of …

New Perspectives On The Schrödinger-Pauli Theory Of Electrons: Part I, Viraht Sahni

Publications and Research

Schrödinger-Pauli (SP) theory is a description of electrons in the presence of a static electromagnetic field in which the interaction of the magnetic field with both the orbital and spin moments is explicitly considered. The theory is described from the new perspective of the individual electron via its equation of motion or ‘Quantal Newtonian’ first law. The law is in terms of ‘classical’ fields whose sources are quantum mechanical expectation values of Hermitian operators taken with respect to the system wave function. The law states that each electron experiences an external and an internal field, the sum of which vanish. …

Inquiry Into The Correlation Between Burnout And Depression, Irvin Sam Schonfeld, Jay Verkuilen, Renzo Bianchi Jan 2019

Inquiry Into The Correlation Between Burnout And Depression, Irvin Sam Schonfeld, Jay Verkuilen, Renzo Bianchi

Publications and Research

The extent to which burnout refers to anything other than a depressive condition remains an object of controversy among occupational health specialists. In three studies conducted in two different countries and two different languages, we investigated the discriminant validity of burnout scales by evaluating the magnitude of the correlation between (latent) burnout and (latent) depression. In Study 1 (N = 911), burnout was assessed with the Maslach Burnout Inventory–General Survey’s Exhaustion subscale and depression with the depression module of the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ). In Study 2 (N = 1,386), the Shirom–Melamed Burnout Measure was used to assess burnout and …

The Mediating Effects Of Intimacy Between Sibling Negative Body Talk And Body Dissatisfaction In Female Adolescents: The Forgotten Sibling Relationship, Emma Lynn Johnson Jan 2019

The Mediating Effects Of Intimacy Between Sibling Negative Body Talk And Body Dissatisfaction In Female Adolescents: The Forgotten Sibling Relationship, Emma Lynn Johnson

Human Development and Family Science

Body dissatisfaction has become so common that most girls and women will experience it at some point in their lives. Teasing and pressure from family members have been shown to be potent influences in the development of body dissatisfaction. However, most research conducted so far focuses on teasing and pressure from mothers, and neglects siblings altogether. I examined how appearance related teasing and pressure from siblings predicted body dissatisfaction and whether sibling intimacy mediated these relationships. Using survey data from 139 female adolescents, I found that appearance related teasing and pressure from siblings significantly predicted higher levels of body dissatisfaction. …

Retraining The Brain To Prevent Disordered Eating: Approach Versus Avoidance, Maegan Elizabeth Jones Jan 2019

Retraining The Brain To Prevent Disordered Eating: Approach Versus Avoidance, Maegan Elizabeth Jones

Human Development and Family Science

Emerging adult college women are at particular risk for developing unhealthy eating habits. Despite this, methods of intervention in this population are understudied. This study sought to test whether an implicit, cognitive retraining program could alter how women approach foods. Specifically, the researcher wanted to determine if the Behavioral Activation System (BAS), which encourages individuals to approach positive goals, and the Behavioral Inhibition System (BIS), which helps individuals avoid negative outcomes, could be manipulated. Thus, this study examined whether a dot-probe retraining program could significantly alter women’s approaches to healthy foods. Dot-probe programs present two pictures side-by-side; when the pictures …

In addition to the above, this paper addresses the effects of using antimicrobial interventions on the ground beef products. Despite using innovative antimicrobial …

Velocity-Based Training: Monitoring, Implementation And Effects On Strength And Power, Henry G. Banyard Jan 2019

Velocity-Based Training: Monitoring, Implementation And Effects On Strength And Power, Henry G. Banyard

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Traditionally, resistance training has been prescribed using percent-based training (PBT) methods that use the loads relative to a maximal load lifted for one repetition (1RM). However, PBT does not take into account possible day-to-day fluctuations in performance that may occur from physical or psychological stressors. One approach to address this limitation is to monitor velocity changes during resistance training, based on research showing that declines in velocity are highly correlated with fatigue. Therefore, velocity-based training (VBT) methods are proposed to provide a more objective method to modify resistance training sessions based on individual differences in day-to-day performance and the rate …

The Law Against Family Separation, Carrie F. Cordero, Heidi Li Feldman, Chimene Keitner Jan 2019

The Law Against Family Separation, Carrie F. Cordero, Heidi Li Feldman, Chimene Keitner

Faculty Scholarship

Most commentators assume that, except for the few restrictions expressly mentioned in the U.S. Constitution, the President's pardon power is unlimited. This Paper suggests that this common view is mistaken in at least one unexpected way. Presidential pardons must satisfy a modest procedural rule: they must list the specific crimes covered by the pardon. The "specificity requirement" means that vague and broadly worded pardons are invalid. This claim bears a significant burden of persuasion, since it runs so counter to accepted opinion. Nonetheless, that burden can be met. This Paper's argument rests on an originalist understanding of the constitutional text, …

The aim of this project is to assess the correlation between microstructure and small-scale characteristics of an additive manufactured AlSi10Mg alloy in the as-printed and heat treated conditions. Post heat treatment cycle …

Digital Image Processing And Metabolic Parameter Linearity To Noninvasively Detect Analyte Concentration, Joseph Allen Jr Jan 2019

Digital Image Processing And Metabolic Parameter Linearity To Noninvasively Detect Analyte Concentration, Joseph Allen Jr

Theses and Dissertations

Spectroscopy is the scientific technique of quantifying and measuring electromagnetic, or light, reflectance or absorption. Atoms emit and/or absorb light when light passes through. The excitations provide specific energy signatures that relate to the element that is emitting or absorbing the light. Non-invasive biosensors monitor physical health properties such as heart rate, oxygen saturation, and tissue blood flow as a result of spectroscopy. Several attempts have been made to non-invasively detect metabolic chemical, or analyte, concentration with various spectroscopic techniques. The primary limitation is due to signal-to-noise ratio. This research focuses on a unique method that combines emission spectroscopy and …

Effect Of In-Hospital Stroke Alert On Thrombolytic Therapy In Women, Renee Colsch

Theses and Dissertations

Background/Purpose. Stroke is the leading cause of disability in the United States. Women who have experienced a stroke have greater disability than men. Thrombolytic agents decrease adverse side effects of stroke by dissolving blood clots. Yet, women have 8% higher odds against being treated with a thrombolytic agent. Also, about 17% of stroke cases occur in-hospital. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate the effects and associated variables of having an in-hospital stroke alert activation on outcomes in women admitted to the hospital for a separate condition.

Methods. Guided by the Model for Nursing Effectiveness Research, a retrospective …

Determination Of Maximum Scour Depth For Spur Dikes Based On A Validated Two-Dimensional Hec-Ras Model, Mathew Lee Cox Jan 2019

Determination Of Maximum Scour Depth For Spur Dikes Based On A Validated Two-Dimensional Hec-Ras Model, Mathew Lee Cox

Theses and Dissertations

The introduction of spur dikes into a river flow field can have many far-reaching positive effects on the stability of a river channel. While the flow velocity directly at the spur dike tip or crest may increase, a large embayment area downstream of the spur dike will form with reduced flow velocities. Due to the increase in flow velocity at the spur dike, a scour hole will form. Scour is the leading cause of failure of hydraulic structures. In the past many hydraulic structures were tested by building scale prototype models, this method is very costly and hard to model …

A Neoclassical Realist’S Analysis Of Sino-U.S. Space Policy, Christopher David Fabian Jan 2019

A Neoclassical Realist’S Analysis Of Sino-U.S. Space Policy, Christopher David Fabian

Theses and Dissertations

During the Cold War, the United States focused its collective policy acumen on forming a competitive, actor-specific strategy to gain advantage over the Soviet Union. The fragmentation of the Soviet Union resulted in a multi-polar geopolitical environment lacking a near-peer rival for the United States. Overwhelming soft and hard power advantages allowed American policy makers to peruse a general, non-actor specific strategy to maintain its hegemonic position. However, the meteoric rise of China as a near-peer competitor in East Asia has challenged this paradigm. In order to maintain its competitive advantage, or at the very least ensure the safety of …

Writing The Body: Embodied Forms And Animal Spirits, Andrew Harnish Jan 2019

Writing The Body: Embodied Forms And Animal Spirits, Andrew Harnish

Theses and Dissertations

“Writing the Body: Embodied Forms and Animals Spirits” is comprised of a critical introduction and a novel. The critical introduction, “Embodied Forms: One Writer’s Journey from an Ableist Aesthetic to Disability Consciousness” is a literacy narrative that traces my longstanding internalization of ableist norms and their expression in my fiction, and my gradual embrace of the value of disability as an identity and aesthetic sensibility. In so doing, the introduction argues that dominant notions of “normalcy,” “perfection,” and “beauty” are deeply damaging to the disabled writers who internalize them because they encourage the creation of art that erases disability, both …

Thermomechanical Processing Of Mg-Li-Al Ultralight Alloys, Rezawana Islam Jan 2019

Thermomechanical Processing Of Mg-Li-Al Ultralight Alloys, Rezawana Islam

Theses and Dissertations

Globally, magnesium (Mg), as the lightest metallic material, imparts a significant long term impact on the stipulation of lightweight structures in aerospace and automotive industries. However, the deformation behavior of magnesium at ambient (room) temperature is not acceptable for most of the structural applications because of its hexagonal closed pack (hcp) structure and limited active slip systems which result in an unacceptable level of brittleness (literally no formability at ambient temperature). Having said this, alloying Mg with an element with more active slip system in its crystalline structure (i.e. lithium with body center cubic crystalline structure) might be a solution …
