Aqueous Microdroplet Generation In Oil-Free Environments, Mohammad Mastiani

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Droplet microfluidics generates and manipulates microdroplets in microfluidic devices at high manufacturing efficiency and controllability. Microdroplets have proven effective in biomedical applications such as single-cell analysis, DNA sequencing, protein partitioning and drug delivery. Conventionally, a series of aqueous microdroplets containing biosamples is generated and controlled in an oil environment. One of the critical challenges in this system is that recovery of the aqueous samples from the oil phase is very difficult and often requires expensive and cumbersome post-processing. Also, the low Reynolds (Re) number characteristic of this system results in low throughput of droplet generation. To circumvent challenges and fully …

Animate Things And Their Empowered Women In Kate Chopin’S “A Pair Of Silk Stockings,” “A Very Fine Fiddle” And “Azelie”, Susan Moldow

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Kate Chopin’s stories including “A Pair of Silk Stockings,” “A Very Fine Fiddle” and “Azelie” are rich in subject-object relationships. Close text analysis helps explicate the power of these objects or things. A thing is animate and an object is not. The stockings, fiddle, and store objects are part of a transaction between things and people; what is an object to one character is a thing to another. Exploration of Victorian women and department stores illuminates how stockings overpower Mrs. Sommers. Research on share tenant life, violins’ value, and Louisiana mixed ancestry reveals how the fiddle enables Fifine and Cleophas …

This thesis considers the feasibility of using a Blockchain to facilitate secured information sharing between parties, where a lack of trust and absence of central control are common characteristics. Implementation of a Blockchain Information Sharing system will be …

Anti-Dna Antibodies In Systemic Lupus, Michelle Fay Cavallo Jan 2019

Anti-Dna Antibodies In Systemic Lupus, Michelle Fay Cavallo

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Two novel methodologies were developed for purification and functional (DNA hydrolytic) assessment of anti-DNA antibodies of IgG isotype from patients with Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE). Earlier protocols for purification and analysis of antibody hydrolytic abilities were lengthy, laborious, and potentially disruptive to antibody function. Purification protocols failed to capture all four IgG subclasses and produced multiple bands outside the range of IgG on electrophoretic separation. Hydrolysis assays were discontinuous increasing the likelihood of introducing error and making them better suited to analysis of endpoint kinetics rather than reaction kinetics. A two-step, affinity-based purification protocol was developed which utilized magnetic Dynabeads …

Carbon Mountains And Silicon Valleys: Reality Imagined In The Age Of Technological Reproducibility, Raven Doyle

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Realism, defined by its most influential theorist André Bazin has been, and continues to be, a dominant and defining cinematic discourse. However, the lack of regard for animation is in need of retrospection. No genre of film adheres more to the original principles of cinema’s intention than animation, yet it is discredited because of its derivative form. The purpose of this paper is to propose a redefinition of the impression of reality in cinema to create inclusion and space for animation and new, emerging technologies. This reality, redefined, is divided into two categories: the carbon and the constructed. Analyzed through …

Children’S Moral Sensitivity: An Examination Of The Suspected Link Between Altruistic Punishment And Moral Judgments, Charles Dukes Jan 2019

Children’S Moral Sensitivity: An Examination Of The Suspected Link Between Altruistic Punishment And Moral Judgments, Charles Dukes

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Developmental research on moral psychology has long been driven by the classic studies of Lawrence Kohlberg with an almost exclusive focus on reasoning. The adoption of an evolutionary perspective has opened moral psychology to investigations into the deep roots of morality. From this perspective, it is thought that group living (cooperation), evolved psychological mechanisms, disgust, emotion, and punishment make for the complex building blocks that is morality. Based on this notion, it is quite possible that morality is present early in life and driven by the forces of natural selection. Thus, moral development may be understood by taking a different …
