Evaluating The Use Of Stopcocks For Lab Collections From Central Venous Access Devices Related To Central Line Associated Blood Stream Infections, Heather Hollingsworth Jan 2019

Evaluating The Use Of Stopcocks For Lab Collections From Central Venous Access Devices Related To Central Line Associated Blood Stream Infections, Heather Hollingsworth

DNP Projects

PURPOSE: Central line associated blood stream infections pose a threat to patient safety and are costly to healthcare systems. Heath care professional frequently access central venous access device (CVAD) to obtain blood samples for laboratory analysis. A commonly accepted procedure practice involves exchanging 3-4 syringes during the collection process. Each time a syringe is exchanged during the lab collection process the opportunity for bacteria to be introduced into the bloodstream exists. Decreasing the number of times a CVAD is accessed removes opportunities for bacteria to be introduced to the line thus decreasing the risk of infection. Due to the occurrence …

Burnout And Self-Stigma Of Seeking Psychological Help In Military Healthcare Providers, Odelia N. Mcfadden Jan 2019

Burnout And Self-Stigma Of Seeking Psychological Help In Military Healthcare Providers, Odelia N. Mcfadden

PCOM Psychology Dissertations

Military healthcare providers (HCPs) are tasked with maintaining the military’s mission readiness while balancing the roles of being providers and military members themselves. As such, military HCPs serve in various settings, including hospitals, clinics, ships, and austere environments. Military HCPs may experience a host of occupational stressors, such as long deployments, being in the line of fire, seeing dead or injured comrades, responding to mass casualty events, having excessive caseloads, and working prolonged hours. These factors make military HCPs susceptible to burnout. Unfortunately, stigma of seeking psychological help is prevalent in the military and may deter individuals from seeking the …

Breeding For Tomato Resistance To Spider Mite Tetranychus Urticae Koch (Acari: Tetranychidae), Ammar Sami Al-Bayati

Theses and Dissertations--Plant and Soil Sciences

Cultivated tomato plants are extremely susceptible to the two-spotted spider mite Tetranychus urticae Koch. Selection for pest resistance is usually a crucial step required to achieve successful genetic resistance transfer from wild into cultivated tomato genotypes. S. habrochaites LA2329, a wild relative of tomato, is highly resistant to arthropods. Its resistance has been attributed to the presence of a high density of type IV and type VI trichomes and abundant production of 7-epi-zingiberene, a sesquiterpene hydrocarbon. The interspecific backcross hybrids used in this research were derived from the cross between the wild relative tomato, S. habrochaites LA2329, and the cultivated …

Stress, Cognitive Distortions, Engagement In Self-Care, And Burnout In Psychology Graduate Students, Lauren Matturro

PCOM Psychology Dissertations

Psychology graduate students are tasked with finding a balance between academic responsibilities, clinical training, home life, time constraints, and financial concerns. These competing demands lead to stress, which is well documented in medical students with similar workloads, but understudied in psychology graduate students. Previous studies indicate that perceived stress can be linked to prevalence of an individual’s cognitive distortions. Additionally, stress within the human service fields often leads to burnout. Self-care is widely recognized as a preventative effort against developing burnout. However, as students have limited time, they may find engaging in self-care activities to be difficult. The purpose of …

Emergency Removals: Does The Statutory Language Of N.Y. Fain. Ct. Act § 1024 Safeguard Vulnerable Families From Foster Care Panic?, Sydney Myones

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice

The note examines the surge in emergency child removals by the Administration for Children's Services (ACS) in New York City following the high-profile death of Zymere Perkins, arguing that these removals are driven by "foster care panic" rather than a genuine change in family conditions. It critiques the broad discretion granted to ACS under N.Y. Fam. Ct. Act 1024 and advocates for a more balanced approach that prioritizes family preservation and addresses systemic biases.

The Relation Between Disordered Eating, Stress, And Anxiety In First-Year College Women, Jenna K. Anderson

Honors Program Theses

Eating disorders are serious mental illnesses which can impact any individual. Although they can negatively affect anyone, they disproportionately affect young women. The same is true for individuals with disordered eating. Disordered eating is more common than clinical eating disorders. The term disordered eating refers to subclinical eating disturbances. Past research has demonstrated a relation between disordered eating, stress, and anxiety. The current study expands upon this by examining these variables in first-year college-enrolled women. Participants were n=99 first-year college women who filled out the DASS-21, the EDE-Q, and a demographics questionnaire. Based on previous results, it was hypothesized that …

Time Series Analysis For Effect Of Vaccines On Pneumonia Or Gastrointestinal Disorders In Brazil, Kang Shen

Public Health Theses

It is important for public health professionals to understand the effects of vaccine introduction and compare different types of vaccinations. This study will focus on understanding the pre and post vaccination effects of two different infectious diseases: pneumonia and gastrointestinal disorders. One of approaches of getting the accurate estimate of vaccine impact is by comparing rates or trends of the targeted disease in the years after introduction with rates of trend in the year before introduction using a time-series analysis. Specifically, in this study, the synthetic controls method implements an approach to estimating the causal effect of a designed intervention …

Impacts Of Ambient Temperature On Foodborne Salmonella Infection, Victoria E. Shirriff Jan 2019

Impacts Of Ambient Temperature On Foodborne Salmonella Infection, Victoria E. Shirriff

Public Health Theses

Foodborne Disease (FBD) impacts individuals through the ingestion of foods contaminated with microbes and can lead to an array of adverse health consequences ranging from mild symptoms such as nausea to those that evolve to become life-threatening (World Health Organization, 2015a). The incidence of FBD is expected to increase in the presence of climate change due to an increase in ambient temperature creating an environment where microbes can rapidly multiply and thrive (Gregory, Johnson, Newton, & Ingram, 2009; Kovats et al., 2004). Foodborne cases of Salmonella make up the second largest cause of gastrointestinal infection in the United States (Scallan …

So You Think You Can Exercise: The Gap Between Exercise Confidence And Physical Activity Among Samoan Adults, Diksha Brahmbhatt Jan 2019

So You Think You Can Exercise: The Gap Between Exercise Confidence And Physical Activity Among Samoan Adults, Diksha Brahmbhatt

Public Health Theses

Samoa is experiencing one of the highest prevalence of overweight and obesity in the world, placing its population at increased risk of developing several noncommunicable diseases including type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. The role of physical activity in reducing the burden of these diseases and overweight is well-established. Exercise self-efficacy or confidence is a predictor, if not determinant, of recreational physical activity. The purpose of this study, therefore, is to assess the relationship between exercise confidence and levels of recreational physical activity among Samoan adults. We confirm that exercise confidence is correlated with time spent exercising. However, despite considerable …

Postpartum Weight Trajectories In A Cohort Of 127 Samoan Women: Does Breastfeeding Protect Against Postpartum Weight Retention?, Grace Castillo

Public Health Theses

Rising global obesity rates impact every aspect of health, including maternal-fetal health. Samoa has a disproportionate burden of obesity, with more than half of Samoan women entering pregnancy obese. Given Samoan women’s high parity (4), postpartum weight retention (PPWR) may be a significant source of weight gain over women’s lifetimes. Little is currently known about PPWR among Samoan women, so this analysis sought to document PPWR trajectories, assess factors – like breastfeeding -- associated with PPWR. Data of 127 mother-infant dyads from the 2017 Foafoaga O le Ola cohort were used in analysis. Researchers collected demographic and lifestyle data, as …
