Mind Over Matter : Stimulant Adhd Medication Use And Bone Mineral Density In College-Aged Subjects ; Is There A Trade-Off?, Sims Kirkland Lawson
Theses
Literature review showed lowered bone mineral density (BMD) among methamphetamine users and in mice that were given methylphenidate. No human clinical studies have been carried out, to date, to investigate whether there is a correlation between use of psychostimulants prescribed for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) (in this case methylphenidate and amphetamines) and lowered BMD in young adult aged humans. This study observed 53 human subjects, age 19-27 years (average age 21 years); 25 experimental, psychostimulant-prescribed ADHD patients, and 28 healthy control subjects. Each subject was given dual x-ray absorptiometer (DXA) scans of femur, hip area, lumbar spine, and whole-body …
Development Of An Environmental Dna Assay For Detection And Monitoring Of The Troglobitic Crayfishes Cambarus Speleocoopi And Cambarus Laconensis, Spencer Boyd
Theses
Cave-dwelling species live in habitats that are hard to access and study. They often are small, elusive to capture, and possess morphological characters that make them difficult to identify without collection and dissection. Environmental DNA (eDNA) offers a nondestructive, noninvasive, and potentially cost-effective way to monitor and detect these species. I investigated the use of eDNA to detect two troglobitic crayfishes Cambarus speleocoopi in Marshall County and Cambarus laconensis in Morgan County, Alabama. I developed and tested in silico and in vivo primer-probe quantitative PCR assays for both species, then screened water samples collected from caves and springs in northern …

The utility of the heart rate derived variable TRaining IMPulse (TRIMP) for assessing internal training load in ice hockey players is not clear. Having a reliable measure of internal training load during on-ice training sessions would help coaches program exercise training. This study determined the reliability of TRIMP during on-ice training sessions in ice hockey players. Twelve Division I collegiate male ice hockey players (aged 18–23 years) had their heart rate (HR) data recorded during two on-ice practice sessions separated by two weeks. TRIMP and other descriptive HR variables were compared between sessions. TRIMP demonstrated moderate reliability during on-ice sessions. …

Methods For Analyzing High Dimensional Data With Applications To The Wearable And Microbiome Data Analysis, Quy Xuan Cao
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Modern studies in medicine, epidemiology, pharmacy and other fields generate high dimensional data. We developed statistical analysis methods for two types of such data: activity and microbiome data. Specifically, reliable measures of the frequency, duration and intensity of physical activity provided by wearable technology were used in the analysis of activity data. Accelerometry-derived measures of physical activity were compared with established predictors of 5-year all-cause mortality in older adults, aged between 50 and 85 years from the 2003- 2006 National Health and Nutritional Examination Survey, in terms of individual, relative, and combined predictive performance. A total of 33 predictors of …
Environmental Variation And Sexual Selection In The Mountain Bluebird (Sialia Currucoides), Sara A. Berk
Environmental Variation And Sexual Selection In The Mountain Bluebird (Sialia Currucoides), Sara A. Berk
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Sexual selection acts on traits that increase mating success, either through mating preferences or intrasexual competition for access to mates. For traits to be honest, we expect sexually selected traits to reflect individual condition at the time of trait development. Furthermore, when sexual selection operates through mating preferences, we also expect traits to indicate benefits (direct or indirect) that females receive for exercising their preference. If sexual selection acts through differential success in intrasexual contests over mates, we expect traits to indicate resource holding potential, or fighting ability. These links between individual condition, trait quality, and performance maintain honesty, because …
Human Vs. Non-Human Bone: A Non-Destructive Histological Method, Haley N. O'Brien
Human Vs. Non-Human Bone: A Non-Destructive Histological Method, Haley N. O'Brien
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Species identification is one of the first steps in the analysis of bone fragments in both forensic and archaeological contexts. Current methods for human vs. non-human taxa identification include morphoscopic, histological, and DNA analyses in order to determine forensic significance and assess what is present in an assemblage. This study will use an MA1000 AmScope camera microscope to examine the longitudinally fractured surface of cortical bone fragments to gauge if non-destructive taxa identification is possible from fragmentary remains without morphologically identifying features. This method is testing for a notable difference in human vs. bovid vs. cervid endosteal cortical bone without …

Performance Profile For Tabata Intermittent Training On Treadmill, Nathan Tamayo
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
This study investigated the effect of supramaximal intensities on number of Tabata bouts performed by recreationally trained males. Eleven relatively trained men (mean age = 22.27 ± 1.74 years, height = 1.72 ± 0.07m, mass = 78.74 ± 15.77kg) were assigned the four intensities in a counterbalanced order. Subjects completed a warm up which was then followed by consecutive 20-second bouts of treadmill running with 10 second bouts of rest until fatigue given each intensity (110%,130%,150%,170% of VO2max). Given that ideal number of Tabata bouts is ~8 with an intensity of 170% VO2max, results suggested that …

Evidence For A New Search Behavior: Porcupines “Scout” For Winter Habitat During Summer In A Coastal Dune System, Pairsa N. Belamaric
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
Species are often challenged by periodic changes in food availability and habitat quality. These environmental conditions may provide strong selective pressure for animals to strategically "scout" for important resources during periods of abundance, when exploratory movements are less costly. North American porcupines experience a drastic shift in forage quality from summer - a time of abundant, high quality forage - to winter, a nutritional bottleneck. I evaluated potential scouting behaviors of porcupines in Tolowa Dunes State Park, California using movement and habitat-use data. I compared summer and winter space use of porcupines using GPS data and monitored seasonal use of …
Trajectories In The Evolution Of Mormon Studies On Faith And Science, Steven L. Peck
Trajectories In The Evolution Of Mormon Studies On Faith And Science, Steven L. Peck
Mormon Studies Review
The relationship between science and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has been and continues to be a complicated story. Concerns and differing perspectives about science provided the underlying context for a number of formal and informal institutional directions taken by the church in the late nineteenth- and early twentieth-centuries. Often, these were influenced by differences in opinion about science among various leaders of the church. Areas in which science played a role include: the relationship between secular and church education, a battleground in framing doctrinal questions about creation—including syncretic influence from the rise of Christian fundamentalism and …

Although inbreeding depression in life-history traits has been well characterized, inbreeding effects on mating behaviour and sexually selected traits have been less well studied. Here, we assess levels of inbreeding depression in a number of fitness-related reproductive parameters of female decorated crickets, Gryllodes sigillatus. We predicted that due to direct negative effects of inbreeding and a potential trade-off between reproduction and current survival, as suggested by effects of inbreeding on immunity, inbred females would show significantly reduced reproductive output compared with outbred females. We also examined sex-specific effects of inbreeding on mating competency, focusing specifically on the female's decision …

Metabolism Reprogramming In Hexavalent Chromium-Induced Human Lung Carcinogenesis, James Tate Fortin Wise
Metabolism Reprogramming In Hexavalent Chromium-Induced Human Lung Carcinogenesis, James Tate Fortin Wise
Theses and Dissertations--Pharmacology and Nutritional Sciences
Hexavalent chromium, Cr(VI), is an established human carcinogen that is a worldwide environmental health concern. It is well understood that reactive oxygen species, genomic instability, and DNA damage repair deficiency are important contributors to Cr(VI)-induced carcinogenesis. After decades of research some cancer hallmarks remain understudied for the mechanism of Cr(VI) carcinogenesis. Dysregulated cellular energetics have been established as a hallmark of cancer. Energy pathways that become dysregulated in cancer include mitochondrial respiration, lipogenesis, pentose phosphate pathway, one carbon metabolism, and increased anaerobic glycolysis in the presence of oxygen or ‘Warburg effect’.
To investigate metabolism changes in Cr(VI) carcinogenesis, we exposed …

2018 Federal Legislative Review, Anna Fugate
Animal Law Review
2018 was a slow year for federal animal law legislation. Congress only signed the Endangered Salmon Predation Prevention Act into law, and that law permits the killing of sea lions to protect endangered salmon and steelhead populations. While Congress considered other animal legislation, none of this proposed legislation made it out of Congressional Committees and Subcommittees.

Prevalence Of Chronic Disease, Associated Factors, And Health Related Quality Of Life Among Wesleyan Clergy, Angi May Mook
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Clergy believe they have been called to be healthy and role models of good health. However, epidemiological evidence supports that clergy are currently exhibiting higher rates of chronic diseases and associated factors such as obesity, diabetes, and hypertension compared to the general population. Prior studies of clergys health are limited because the few available studies are denomination specific, limiting generalizability to the other denominations who have differing theology and beliefs. The Wesleyan denomination has not been formally studied. The gap in literature, therefore, creates a need for baseline information specific to the Wesleyan clergy. This cross-sectional study assessed the prevalence …
