The Diagnosis Of Asymptomatic Disease Is Associated With Fewer Healthy Days: A Cross Sectional Analysis From The National Health And Nutrition Examination Survey, Janel Hanmer, Lan Yu, Jie Li, Dio Kavalieratos, Laurel M. Peterson, Rachel Hess
Psychology Faculty Research and Scholarship
Objective
To examine the effect of the diagnosis of asymptomatic disease on health‐related quality of life (HRQoL).
Design
Secondary analysis of a national data set.
Method
We analysed adult participants in the 2011–2012 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) of the civilian non‐institutionalized US general population. Across three asymptomatic diseases (glucose intolerance, hyperlipidaemia, and hypertension), we examined four groups (without disease; with disease but no diagnosis; with disease and diagnosis but no treatment; and with disease, diagnosis, and treatment). For each asymptomatic disease, we examined group differences in self‐rated health (ordinal logistic regression) and Healthy Days outcomes (number of …

Christ-Focused Service-Learning: Learning To Receive Ministry In Humility, Stephanie Matthew, Elizabeth Roark, Eloise Hockett
Faculty Publications - College of Nursing
Service-learning is an experiential process of action and reflection that allows students to expand their knowledge through real-world activities that benefit others. Service-learning opportunities for baccalaureate nursing students in Kenya have provided many ongoing examples of learning from our Kenyan collaborators. Receiving ministry from those we came to serve, allows allows us, in turn, to demonstrate Christ’s humility. In this article, we share specific stories of how various community partners ministered in unexpected ways to our teams of students and faculty, as we served in Kenya through healthcare and education.

Evaluability Assessment Of “Growing Healthy Communities,” A Mini-Grant Program To Improve Access To Healthy Foods And Places For Physical Activity, Christiaan G. Abildso, Angela Dyer, Shay M. Daily, Thomas K. Bias
Evaluability Assessment Of “Growing Healthy Communities,” A Mini-Grant Program To Improve Access To Healthy Foods And Places For Physical Activity, Christiaan G. Abildso, Angela Dyer, Shay M. Daily, Thomas K. Bias
Faculty & Staff Scholarship
Mini-grants have been used to stimulate multisector collaboration in support of public health initiatives by funding non-traditional partners, such as economic development organizations. Such mini-grants have the potential to increase access to healthy foods and places for physical activity through built environment change, especially in small and rural towns in the United States. Although a promising practice, few mini-grant evaluations have been done. Therefore, our purpose was to conduct an Evaluability Assessment (EA), which is a process that can help promising programs that lack evidence advance toward full-scale evaluation. Specifically, we conducted an Evaluability Assessment of a statewide mini-grant program, …
Defusing A Ticking Time Bomb: The Complicated Considerations Underlying Compulsory Human Genetic Editing, Grant Hayes Frazier
Defusing A Ticking Time Bomb: The Complicated Considerations Underlying Compulsory Human Genetic Editing, Grant Hayes Frazier
UC Law Science and Technology Journal
Gene editing is a type of genetic engineering that enables scientists to change an organism’s DNA by adding, removing, or altering genetic material at particular locations in the human genome. While these editing technologies are in their infancy, they hold great promise for future applications. They also raise many moral, ethical, and legal questions.
Fast forward 10 years. In utero gene editing is effective, safe, and inexpensive (or covered by insurance). A couple with strong religious views against gene editing decides to procreate despite knowing, via family history, they are both homozygous dominant for the allele that causes Huntington’s disease …
Preparing Social Workers For Interprofessional Practice: A Conceptual Interprofessional Education (Ipe) Competency-Based Model, Carlos Devonte Graham
Preparing Social Workers For Interprofessional Practice: A Conceptual Interprofessional Education (Ipe) Competency-Based Model, Carlos Devonte Graham
MUSC Theses and Dissertations
Interprofessional education (IPE) continues to advance as the best method to prepare health care professionals for interprofessional collaborative practice (IPCP). Large numbers of US social workers enter the workforce unprepared for interprofessional collaborative practice (Taylor & Coffey, 2014; Jones & Phillips, 2016; Stanhope et al., 2015). Without a clear understanding of the redundancies between social work educational standards and IPE competencies it is difficult to design IPE based courses for social work students with adequate content. The study purpose was to (1) identify were there was redundancy between the IPEC core competencies and CSWE 2015 EPAS competencies, (2) identify gaps …
Tackling Specialty Drug Access And Cost Of Care In Our Modern Age: Using Pediatric Crohn’S Disease Care As A Model, J. Antonio Quiros
Tackling Specialty Drug Access And Cost Of Care In Our Modern Age: Using Pediatric Crohn’S Disease Care As A Model, J. Antonio Quiros
MUSC Theses and Dissertations
Background: Biologic agents that block tumor necrosis factor-α (anti-TNF) have been FDA approved for treatment of Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Crohn’s disease and Ulcerative Colitis, in both adults and children, they have better efficacy when started early in disease course but access can be limited due to cost. The objective of this study is to address whether the current differential drug coverage methods between privately and publicly insured children is associated with timely access to biologics and differences in healthcare utilization using pediatric Crohn’s disease as a model. Methods: Children with a diagnosis of Crohn’s disease were identified from Truven Health …

How Southwest Florida Prepares For Its 2050 Health Care Workforce By Identifying And Creating Educational Programs: Needs, Demand, And Strategy, Lynda M. Waterhouse
MUSC Theses and Dissertations
There is a concern about having enough healthcare providers in the next 30 years due to changing demographics and rapid population growth in Southwest Florida. The study objective is to determine the health care needs of Southwest Florida and the type of health care providers required, and then how to best provide educational programs to ensure there are the professionals in future years to meet the needs. The research will explore how the educational system as a critical component in the preparation of the region's workforce can proactively address the anticipated programmatic gaps in achieving the projected needs of the …
Effect Of Rural Residence On Primary Care Access For Adolescents With Chronic Conditions, Jessica Michelle Winkler
Effect Of Rural Residence On Primary Care Access For Adolescents With Chronic Conditions, Jessica Michelle Winkler
MUSC Theses and Dissertations
It is essential for adolescents with chronic conditions to have appropriate access to primary care. If the adolescents with chronic conditions do not have adequate primary care access, they will likely have a poorer quality of life and more preventable hospitalizations. This can make an already difficult situation on the family even more burdensome. Additionally, this will also become burdensome to the healthcare community. This study is important because the medical community can begin to look at the disparities in health care services. This retrospective cohort study used 2014 state hospitalization data from Georgia (GA), Kentucky (KY), and South Carolina …
Enhancing Aldehyde Detoxification As A Novel Therapy For Liver Fibrosis And Acetaminophen-Induced Liver Injury, Hereward John Wimborne
Enhancing Aldehyde Detoxification As A Novel Therapy For Liver Fibrosis And Acetaminophen-Induced Liver Injury, Hereward John Wimborne
MUSC Theses and Dissertations
Oxidative stress is a common component and important mediator in the pathogenesis of many liver injuries and of liver fibrosis. Although reactive oxygen species (ROS) are known to have effects on many important biological macromolecules and cell organelles, such as mitochondria, how oxidative stress causes liver injury/fibrosis has not been fully elucidated. ROS oxidize membrane lipids to form lipid radicals which undergo ß-scission to form aldehydes, such as malondialdehyde (MDA) and 4-hydroxynonenal (4-HNE). These aldehydes are highly reactive and readily form adducts with proteins and nucleic acids. Relatively little is known about the role of aldehydes in the pathogenesis of …

Progress At What Price?: Defenses Of Indigenous Peoples In Argentine Writing About Patagonia (1894-1904), Ashley Kerr
Decimonónica
Official history boasts that by the mid-1880s, the Argentine government had definitively brought Patagonia under national control, neutralizing the savagery associated with both the land and the indigenous people who lived there. The 1881 Tratado de Límites between Argentina and Chile and the 1884 Ley Orgánica de los Territorios Nacionales demarcated the limits of national sovereignty and organized the newly-formed provinces of Neuquén, Río Negro, Chubut, Santa Cruz, and Tierra del Fuego. General Lorenzo Vittner declared the successful end of the Conquista del desierto in 1885, ending military efforts to subdue indigenous populations in the south (Mases 59). At the …
