Evaluating The Success Of Female Selected Sex-Sorted Semen At Western Kentucky University's Dairy Farm, Briley Loggan
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the use of female selected sex-sorted semen and to determine the association of variables on the success of Western Kentucky University’s Dairy Farm. Official breeding and calving records (n=144) were used to determine the relation of lactation number, breeding season, breeding number, breeding year and semen type on pregnancy results, sex of offspring, and the mortality of the offspring. Previous research has shown pregnancy results can be influenced by lactation number, breeding season, number of breedings and semen type. Results from this study show that pregnancy results were not associated with lactation …

Sensitivity Analyses For Tumor Growth Models, Ruchini Dilinika Mendis
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
This study consists of the sensitivity analysis for two previously developed tumor growth models: Gompertz model and quotient model. The two models are considered in both continuous and discrete time. In continuous time, model parameters are estimated using least-square method, while in discrete time, the partial-sum method is used. Moreover, frequentist and Bayesian methods are used to construct confidence intervals and credible intervals for the model parameters. We apply the Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) techniques with the Random Walk Metropolis algorithm with Non-informative Prior and the Delayed Rejection Adoptive Metropolis (DRAM) algorithm to construct parameters' posterior distributions and then …

Changes In Mitochondrial Protein Expression In Human Cd4 + T Cells During The Initiation And Progression Of Diabetes, Alanna Keady
Changes In Mitochondrial Protein Expression In Human Cd4 + T Cells During The Initiation And Progression Of Diabetes, Alanna Keady
Health Sciences Student Work
Introduction: Chronic sterile inflammation that underlies obesity can promote unhealthy cellular changes eventually leading to a decline in metabolic health and type-2 diabetes. Dysregulation of cellular processes during the initiation and progression of obesity can impair inflammatory homeostasis leading to a proinflammatory Th17 cytokine profile by CD4 + Tcells. Our ongoing research efforts are to understand the mechanistic link between the changes in a cellular housekeeping process known as autophagy and the regulation of Th17 cytokines in obese non diabetic and diabetic subjects. Methods: We assessed cellular protein expression and colocalization using immunoblotting, immunofluorescence, flow cytometry and ELISA assays. Results: …

The American criminal justice system holds almost 2.3 million people in 1,719 state prisons, 102 federal prisons, 1,852 juvenile correctional facilities, 3,163 local jails, and 80 Indian Country jails as well as in military prisons, immigration detention facilities, civil commitment centers, state psychiatric hospitals, and prisons in the U.S. territories. The United States has the highest incarceration rate in the world. Ex-convicts express that transitioning back into society, as well as finding employers willing to hire former inmates, is a difficult task. In this capstone, we will look at prison reform from the 1800s-to-today, we will determine which roles retributive …
Novel Roles Of Mechanistic Target Of Rapamycin Signaling In Regulating Fetal Growth, Madhulika B. Gupta, Thomas Jansson
Novel Roles Of Mechanistic Target Of Rapamycin Signaling In Regulating Fetal Growth, Madhulika B. Gupta, Thomas Jansson
Paediatrics Publications
Mechanistic target of rapamycin (mTOR) signaling functions as a central regulator of cellular metabolism, growth, and survival in response to hormones, growth factors, nutrients, energy, and stress signals. Mechanistic TOR is therefore critical for the growth of most fetal organs, and global mTOR deletion is embryonic lethal. This review discusses emerging evidence suggesting that mTOR signaling also has a role as a critical hub in the overall homeostatic control of fetal growth, adjusting the fetal growth trajectory according to the ability of the maternal supply line to support fetal growth. In the fetus, liver mTOR governs the secretion and phosphorylation …

Intuitive Eating Promotes A Healthy Lifestyle, Krista Oezer
Intuitive Eating Promotes A Healthy Lifestyle, Krista Oezer
Classical Conversations
“Intuitive eating is a dynamic process integrating attunement of the mind, body, and food.” (Tribole and Resch 23). Essentially, intuitive eating is a way of life. By listening to inner, natural signals, intuitive eating integrates mind, body, and food for optimal health. Speaking from my own personal experience, intuitive eating truly does promote a healthy lifestyle. I don’t just know about intuitive eating; I live it. I want to share my knowledge and my experience with intuitive eating to those who have never heard of it. Although intuitive eating has gained popularity, especially among dieticians and nutritionists, it still remains …

(Video) Latino Immigration And Chronic Disease: A Critical Analysis Of Socioeconomic And Psychological Mediators, Frances Anne Fernando
(Video) Latino Immigration And Chronic Disease: A Critical Analysis Of Socioeconomic And Psychological Mediators, Frances Anne Fernando
GW Research Days 2016 - 2020
A critical analysis of chronic disease among Latino immigrants demonstrates the interplay between the individual, socioeconomic, and pathophysiological mediators of disease. To identify the major factors involved, a conceptual framework was developed to explain the relationship between Latino immigration to the US and the manifestation of diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Mediating factors include: self-efficacy, stress, social support, access to healthcare, pathophysiological risk factors and the familial and cultural environment. As the Latino population is the fastest growing and largest minority group in America, increased support among the identified factors will target interventions with broad health and economic implications for the …

The goal was to determine differences within the subject pool for insulin insensitivity and pre-diabetes based on demographics. We further modeled both pancreatic beta cell function and insulin sensitivity using the homeostatic model assessment for insulin resistance (HOMA-IR).
Does Food Insecurity Predict Obesity And Educational Achievement: A Systematic Literature Review, Emily Youner, Ami Zota
Does Food Insecurity Predict Obesity And Educational Achievement: A Systematic Literature Review, Emily Youner, Ami Zota
GW Research Days 2016 - 2020
The objective of this study was to determine whether food availability predicts health outcomes among children in the U.S., such as obesity rates and academic performance. Though there was some inconsistency in the findings, based on the Navigation Guide methodology, we concluded that there is inadequate evidence of correlation between food insecurity and obesity rates, yet limited evidence of correlation between food insecurity and educational achievement. Given these findings, further research is warranted to inform policy action to mitigate the effects food insecurity.

Social-Emotional Intelligence (Ei), Graduates And The Workplace – A Study Of A Tailored Approach To Ei Competency Development For Final Year Engineering Students, Ailish Jameson
Dissertations
Previous research has demonstrated that higher social and emotional competence (EI) results in increased life and career success. To date, EI coaching programmes have been delivered in higher education and in the workplace and have demonstrated success in terms of increased EI competence, post intervention. However, to date no attempt has been made in an Irish context to design and deliver a tailored EI coaching programme, based on the stated needs of employers. This study aimed to address this gap in EI research. It was exploratory in nature with a mixed method design being employed. In Phase One, a survey …
