Perceptions Of Rural High School Professional School Counselors Regarding The Impact Of Strategies To Help At-Risk Learners Graduate, Beth Duvall Fleming

Dissertations

The purpose of this research was to study the perceptions of school counselors regarding the impact of the school counseling program, interventions, and other strategies to help at-risk learners persist to graduate. A qualitative research design employing an interpretive phenomenological analysis methodology was used. Semi-structured interviews with open-ended questions allowed the respondents to share insights into the thoughts, feelings, and perceptions of their individual experiences as school counselors. The results suggest students with various risk factors choose not to persist to graduate, transferring to homeschool or withdrawing from school as a dropout. Academic deficiency, severe misbehavior, poor attendance, and social …

Immigration And Underbanking: An Analysis Of The Financial Integration Of Immigrant Populations, James Baugh Apr 2019

Immigration And Underbanking: An Analysis Of The Financial Integration Of Immigrant Populations, James Baugh

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Underbanking, or use of alternative financial services such as payday lenders rather than traditional banks, is a practice that has substantial financial and social harm. Given that literature and prior research shows that immigrants face unique cultural barriers to financial assimilation, the current study examines how immigrant status influences one’s odds of being underbanked. Using the June 2015 Underbanking Supplement to the Current Population Survey, immigrants are delineated by first- and second-generation status, as well by the development status of their country of origin, and their relationship to underbanking is examined through a series of logistic regression analyses. Results indicate …

Effects Of A Typical Fast‐Food Meal On Arterial Stiffness In Young Adults, Erik J. Harrington Apr 2019

Effects Of A Typical Fast‐Food Meal On Arterial Stiffness In Young Adults, Erik J. Harrington

Inquiry Journal 2019

Fast food is a quick and easy alternative to preparing a meal and is a growing industry that is popular among all demographics and ages. Many younger individuals think that consuming this type of food frequently has no adverse health effects, because their bodies are able to metabolize the food quickly and without noticeable health‐related consequences. One way of assessing the stress that this type of food places on the body is through measurement of arterial stiffness. I conducted a study during the summer of 2018 in the Robert Kertzer Exercise Physiology Laboratory at the University of New Hampshire to …

Value-Based Change: Accountable Care Organizations As A Method Of Healthcare Reform, Haley Lebel-Stephen

Community Engagement Student Work

In the past, there have been several attempts to overhaul the healthcare system. Despite this, the healthcare system in the United States has been relatively the same for over a hundred years. Consumers are at the forefront of a major push for a better healthcare system that meets all of their needs without emptying their bank accounts, restricting access to services and providers, communicating in unclear and insufficient ways, and requiring consumers to jump through hoops of complex processes. This project analyzes value-based reimbursement by way of accountable care organizations and coordinated healthcare as a front-running alternative healthcare model currently …

Saturated Fatty Acid Activates T Cell Inflammation Through A Nicotinamide Nucleotide Transhydrogenase (Nnt)-Dependent Mechanism, Grace Mccambridge, Madhur Agrawal, Alanna Keady, Philip A. Kern, Hatice Hasturk, Barbara S. Nikolajczyk, Leena P. Bharath

Honors Senior Capstone Projects

Circulating fatty acids (FAs) increase with obesity and can drive mitochondrial damage and inflammation. Nicotinamide nucleotide transhydrogenase (NNT) is a mitochondrial protein that positively regulates nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADPH), a key mediator of energy transduction and redox homeostasis. The role that NNT-regulated bioenergetics play in the inflammatory response of immune cells in obesity is untested. Our objective was to determine how free fatty acids (FFAs) regulate inflammation through impacts on mitochondria and redox homeostasis of peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs). PBMCs from lean subjects were activated with a T cell-specific stimulus in the presence or absence of generally pro-inflammatory …

Modifiable Factors That Influence Infant Motor Development At 4 Months And 12 Months Of Age, Lauren Miller

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

INTRODUCTION: The choices a mother makes during pregnancy (diet and exercise) and postpartum (environmental stimuli, sleeping situation, feeding practices) could influence a child’s motor skills immediately after birth and into childhood. The objective of this experiment is twofold: 1) to determine factors that may influence infant motor development scores at 4 and 12 months of age, and 2) to determine whether infant motor scores at 4 months of age predict infant motor scores at 12 months of age. METHODS: Infant motor development was assessed by a pediatric physical therapist using the Alberta Infant Motor Scale (4 months) and the Peabody …

Natural Mummies Of Northern Europe: An Exploration Into The Biocultural Importance Of Bog Bodies, Reilly Boone Apr 2019

Natural Mummies Of Northern Europe: An Exploration Into The Biocultural Importance Of Bog Bodies, Reilly Boone

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

For several centuries, peat harvesters in Northern Europe have been finding the mummified remains of late Bronze Age (1100 – 800 B.C.E.) and Iron Age (800 B.C.E.- 400 C.E.) people. Within the last century, scientists have begun to study these remains in depth. These bodies pique much curiosity due to the apparent violence associated with their deaths. Because of this, these remains have proven to be significant parts of the societies in which they died and that in which they were discovered. It is inferred from archaeological evidence that these individuals may have held religious importance in Bronze-Iron Age societies. …

Approaches To Parenting And Information Processing, Alyssa Berry Apr 2019

Approaches To Parenting And Information Processing, Alyssa Berry

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

Corporal punishment can be defined as using physical force with intent to cause pain when punishing a child (Straus, 2000). A substantial amount of research supports that corporal punishment has a negative effect on a child’s social and emotional development, specifically empathy and moral development. Studies also support that those who received corporal punishment as children are more likely to use corporal punishment with their own children (Gagné, Tourigny, & Pouliot-Lapointe, 2007). This current study elaborates on both these aspects of previous research. Three hypotheses frame this study: 1) Receiving corporal punishment as a child predicts lower empathy and moral …
