In this paper, I compare two francophone novels, Calixthe Beyala’s Comment cuisiner son mari à l’africaine and Maryse Condé’s Victoire, les saveurs et les mots: récit, to explore how, in engaging one another, they offer a cookbook for self-empowerment to francophone societies still struggling with the internalized cultural norms of their former colonizer. Such lingering norms are impossible to satisfy, especially for the novels’ black female protagonists who, inherently, can never become the colonizer’s ideal of beauty (white, thin, attractive by western convention). Thus, these characters are cast away into a cultural in-between: although literally visible within their countries, …

Gene Lifestyle Interactions With Relation To Obesity, Cardiometabolic, And Cardiovascular Traits Among South Asians, Shafqat Ahmad, Syeda Sadia Fatima, Gull Rukh, Caren E. Smith
Department of Biological & Biomedical Sciences
The rapid rise of obesity, type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and cardiovascular disease (CVD) during the last few decades among South Asians has been largely attributed to a major shift in lifestyles including physical inactivity, unhealthy dietary patterns, and an overall pattern of sedentary lifestyle. Genetic predisposition to these cardiometabolic risk factors may have interacted with these obesogenic environments in determining the higher cardiometabolic disease prevalence. Based on the premise that gene-environment interactions cause obesity and cardiometabolic diseases, we systematically searched the literature and considered the knowledge gaps that future studies might fulfill. We identified only seven published studies that …

As we mark the 25th anniversary of the Dietary Supplement Health & Education Act (DSHEA) it’s good to take a step back and look at some of the trends that are shaping the industry today.
Lines are blurring between the food and nutrition industries, while overlaps are growing between nutrition and cosmetics, and nutrition and pharma. Meteoric growth is being accompanied by increased scrutiny from the media and regulators into the supply chain, and greater demands from consumers for transparency around the safety and efficacy of these products.
With over a decade of reporting on the food and nutrition industries …

Oxford ICSB
The Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act (DSHEA) of 1994 amended the U.S. Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act. The DSHEA also amended the U.S. Public Health Service Act in order to establish the Office of Dietary Supplements (ODS) and place it within the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Passage of the DSHEA assured consumer access to supplements, defined dietary supplements as a special category of foods, laid out a regulatory framework enforced by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and provided a basis for creating and disseminating research to strengthen knowledge and understanding of dietary supplements.

“New China, Great Olympics”: A Historical Study Of The 2008 Beijing Olympic Games As A Spectacle That Promoted Chinese National Strength On An International Stage, Thomas F. Garrity
Proceedings of GREAT Day
The Chinese treated the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games as a spectacle that reestablished China’s strength on the international stage. In order to relieve the historical shame of the Century of Humiliation from Chinese historical memory, the Chinese felt the need to both win and host international sporting events. To showcase a “New China,” the Chinese modernized Beijing’s transportation infrastructure, attempted to reform the manners of its citizens, and sought to dominate the medal count of the sporting events in order to broadcast the image of a newly strengthened, modern nation to the international community. The political motivations of the CCP …

The snowballing demands for cleaner fuel from the transport and industrial sectors has made many believe that biofuel production is the panacea. Is E85 (a laboratory made ethanol based fuel) the cure for the world’s dependence on fossil fuels? A keen look exposes a more critical conundrum; the production of E85 destroys human food. With 1 in 8 people suffering from chronic undernourishment in 2010- 2012, this production is not justifiable. Biofuels are produced through the break down of plants’ cellulosic components (lignocellulose LC) into glucose and then into ethanol. However, two main challenges remain: 1) finding a cheap, reliable …

Defined By The Home: Housing And Class Connections In George Orwell’S Keep The Aspidistra Flying, Sarah Graham
Proceedings of GREAT Day
Focusing on the relationship between social class and living arrangements, George Orwell’s Keep the Aspidistra Flying portrays textually 1930s class differences in London, England. That a character’s class defines how he or she lives is made noticeably clear by Orwell, but his portrayal centers on the most central marker of class stratification: where each character lives. After World War I, there was a shortage of housing in London because little funding was available to build new houses. Slum clearing and updating was also put on the back burner and allowed to grow worse, thus allowing lower-class housing fall into greater …

- Savanna tree cover is dynamic due to disturbances such as fire and herbivory. Frequent fires can limit a key demographic transition from sapling to adult height classes in savanna trees. Saplings may be caught in a ‘fire trap’, wherein individuals repeatedly resprout following fire top-kill events. Saplings only rarely escape the cycle by attaining a fire-resistant height (e.g. taller than the minimum scorch height) during fire-free intervals.
- Large mammalian herbivores also may trap trees in shorter size classes. Browsing herbivores directly limit sapling height, while grazing herbivores such as cattle facilitate sapling growth indirectly via grass removal. Experimental studies investigating …

The purpose of the quasi-experimental study was to examine the effect of a community educational offering on attendees’ knowledge of osteoporosis as measured by the Osteoporosis Knowledge Test. A statistical significant difference was noted between the pretest and post-test means (p = .000). The findings demonstrate that a brief educational session can increase knowledge regarding osteoporosis. Development of partnerships with community populations to provide opportunities for health education can be valuable in promoting healthy behaviors.

Sch47554 and Sch47555 are two angucyclines with antifungal activities against various yeasts and dermatophytes from Streptomyces sp. SCC‐2136. The schgene cluster contains several putative regulatory genes. Both schA4 and schA21were predicted as the TetR family transcriptional regulators, whereas schA16shared significant similarity to the AraC family transcriptional regulators. Although Sch47554 is the major product of Streptomyces sp. SCC‐2136, its titer is only 6.72 mg/L. This work aimed to increase the production of this promising antifungal compound by investigating and manipulating the regulatory genes in the Sch47554 biosynthetic pathway. Disruption of schA4and schA16 led to a significant increase …

Better Together: A Pilot Study On Cooking Matters For Adults With Developmental Disabilities And Direct Support Professionals, Wesley R Barnhart, Susan M Havercamp, Allison Lorenz, Emily A Yang
Ambulatory and Primary Care Articles
Adults with developmental disabilities face barriers to making healthy lifestyle choices that mirror the barriers faced by the direct support professionals who serve them. These two populations, direct support professionals and adults with developmental disabilities, are likely to lead inactive lifestyles, eat unhealthy diets, and be obese. Moreover, direct support professionals influence the nutrition knowledge, attitudes, and health behaviors of the adults with developmental disabilities whom they serve. We piloted a cooking-based nutrition education program, Cooking Matters for Adults, to dyads of adults with developmental disabilities (n = 8) and direct support professionals (n = 7). Team-taught by a …
