Hebert, Marcelo Medeiros Pinheiro

Faculty Publications

Introduction: Adequate nutrition, including intake of dietary calcium and vitamin D, is important to maintain bone health. Evidence suggests that a deficiency in micronutrients may contribute to bone loss during aging and exert generalized effects on chronic inflammation. Recently, the Dietary Inflammatory Index (DII) was developed to assess the inflammatory potential of individual diets. Our aim was to evaluate the DII in a representative sample and verify its association with low-impact fractures.

Methods: Individuals from The Brazilian Osteoporosis Study (BRAZOS) database had their DII calculated. BRAZOS is an important cross-sectional epidemiological study carried out with a representative sample of men …

The Importance Of Education And Community Engagement Towards Sea Turtle Conservation, Elias Miller, George Meindl Apr 2019

The Importance Of Education And Community Engagement Towards Sea Turtle Conservation, Elias Miller, George Meindl

Binghamton University Undergraduate Journal

In order to cope with the historic unsustainable use of resources and lack of concern that humans have for the environment, scientists and educators have “elected” species they believe can help to conserve natural resources. As a beloved and charismatic species, sea turtles are often chosen as ambassadors to encourage a change in public perception of the importance of healthy ecosystems. Sea turtles are some of the most vulnerable species in marine ecosystems, yet the roles they play as habitat engineers, predators, prey, and facilitators of nutrient cycling are becoming more apparent as human activities have reduced their numbers worldwide. …

Impact Of The Introduction Of Black Raspberries In A Standard Western-Style Diet On Colitis And Colorectal Cancer Risk In Mice, Daphne Rodriguez, Korry Hintze

Student Research Symposium

Approximately 1.4 million people suffer from inflammatory bowel disease, which is major risk factor for developing colitis associated colorectal cancer (CAC). Dietary interventions with the goal to reduce colon inflammation and encourage gut microbiome homeostasis may be a strategy to reduce the risk of CAC. The antioxidants and antiinflammatory compounds present in black raspberries (BRB) have demonstrated protective effects in the colon epithelium and may alter the composition of the gut microbiome. Previously, we showed that dietary supplementation with black raspberries significantly suppressed coliti and colon tumorigenesis promoted by the consumption of a Western type diet in mice. The goal …

Effects Of Zinc Oxide Nanoparticles On Drought Tolerance In Winter Wheat, Justin Deakin Apr 2019

Effects Of Zinc Oxide Nanoparticles On Drought Tolerance In Winter Wheat, Justin Deakin

Student Research Symposium

Drought commonly reduces crop yields in agricultural production systems located in semi-arid regions around the world. Commonly, wheat (Triticum aestivum) is grown in these regions. The goal of this study was to determine if zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles (NPs) applied as a soil amendment reduces drought stress in wheat seedlings grown in the presence of Pseudomonas chloraphis isolate O6 (PcO6), a beneficial root colonizer. To show a nanoparticle-specific benefit, ZnO NP treatments were compared with bulk zinc sulfate (ZnSO4) and ZnO, the most commonly applied Zn amendments. Wheat was grown in a controlled environment, using sand amended with 5 mg/kg …

The Effect Of Two Tube-Feeding Protocols On Bacterial Contamination And Diarrhea In Icu Patients, Lynda J. Davidson Apr 2019

The Effect Of Two Tube-Feeding Protocols On Bacterial Contamination And Diarrhea In Icu Patients, Lynda J. Davidson

Dissertations

Diarrhea, a serious outcome for patients, commonly occurs following institution of enteral feeding. One suggested etiology for the problem is bacterial contamination of the enteral feeding solution. The purpose of this study was to extend previous pilot research on the occurrence of bacterial contamination and diarrhea in tube-fed ICU patients by comparing two enteral feeding protocols. The protocols compared were the routine hospital protocol vs an aseptic protocol for the preparation and maintenance of enteral nutrition. A convenience sample of 63 ICU patients, who met the inclusion criteria, were followed from the first day of enteral feeding to the fourth …

King Of The Hill? How Biotic Interactions Affect Biogeographical Pattern And Species Responses To Climate Change, Joshua Scott Lynn, Jennifer A. Rudgers, Tom E. X. Miller, Stephanie N. Kivlin, Melanie R. Kazenel

Biology ETDs

As climate has warmed, many species have moved up mountains as physiological limits to their distributions have ameliorated. These distribution shifts are creating novel communities, begging the question: What happens to species at the tops of mountains as potential antagonists encroach upwards? Theory predicts that upward migrations will cause range contractions for high-elevation species because of novel interactions with encroaching antagonists. My dissertation work is one of the most comprehensive tests of this question to date, using a combination of ecological niche modeling (ENM), experiments, and demographic and trait-based modeling approaches. I created novel ENMs that suggest context-dependency of biotic …

How Chevron Deference Is Inappropriate In U.S. Fishery Management And Conservation, Charles T. Jordan

Seattle Journal of Environmental Law

Well managed fisheries represent an excellent source of sustainable food making the management of which incredibly important. The management of fisheries in the United States is governed by The Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act (MSFCMA). While the Act creates strong goals and mandates to ensure the best management of fisheries as an important natural resource, there are issues of delegation within the act. The MSFCMA ultimately delegates authority to eight regional councils which are made up of unelected and un-appointed members. The membership of these councils is at risk of industry influence with little legal protections. Critical in how …
