Inside The Bread Basket: A Look At Growing Grains In Kansas, Cambre Morrow Jul 2019

Inside The Bread Basket: A Look At Growing Grains In Kansas, Cambre Morrow

JCCC Honors Journal

Kansas has always produced large wheat harvests but over the last few years Kansas has experienced smaller and smaller wheat harvests, and these smaller harvests could be due to weather, food allergies, or issues with sustainability. One grain that also has a history of growing in Kansas is sorghum and the use of sorghum in human consumption is growing because the grain is naturally gluten-free and the crop is able to grow in harsh climates. Also, the non-profit research organization The Land Institute is looking to create a perennial sorghum crop that would be a sustainable option opposed to traditional …

Tomasz Dangel Oral History.

Pediatric Palliative Care Oral History Project

Dr. Dangel begins the interview describing his experiences as a pediatric anesthesiologist witnessing children dying while receiving unnecessary aggressive treatment during the end-of-life. He also describes several pivotal experiences learning about and seeing other countries develop pediatric hospices. When he brought back his experiences to his home institution, he was not well received and consequently left to seek an environment to nurture his vision for pediatric palliative and hospice care. Dr. Dangel comments that this was not his first time bringing new ideas into Polish medicine since he "introduced the modern techniques of regional anesthesia and analgesia in children," in …

Is Animal Suffering Really All That Matters? The Move From Suffering To Vegetarianism, Carlo Alvaro Jul 2019

Is Animal Suffering Really All That Matters? The Move From Suffering To Vegetarianism, Carlo Alvaro

Publications and Research

The animal liberation movement, among other goals, seeks an end to the use of animals for food. Philosophers who write against animal exploitation agree on the goal but differ in their approaches: Deontologists argue that rearing animals for food infringes animals’ inherent right to life. Utilitarians claim that discontinuing the use of animals for food will result in the maximization of utility. Virtue-oriented theorists argue that using animals for food is an unvirtuous practice. Despite their different approaches, arguments for vegetarianism or veganism have a common step. They move from the notion of suffering to the conclusion of vegetarianism or …

Optimizing Lighting Regimes For Rearing Orbicella Faveolata And Acropora Cervicornis Recruits, Paul D. Kreh Jul 2019

Optimizing Lighting Regimes For Rearing Orbicella Faveolata And Acropora Cervicornis Recruits, Paul D. Kreh

HCNSO Student Theses and Dissertations

Coral reef decline worldwide has led to the need for coral reef restoration. The use of sexual reproduction in restoration efforts is required to increase genetic diversity; however, the procedures for rearing newly-settled coral recruits ex situ still need to be optimized. Recruits initially require low light irradiance, but it is unclear when higher irradiances are required to enhance growth and survival. Here we determined the optimal light regime for Orbicella faveolata and Acropora cervicornis recruits. Newly settled recruits were reared under treatments with varied rates of increasing irradiance (after reaching 5 weeks of age), and their survival, growth, and …

The Kids Are Not Alright: Leveraging Existing Health Law To Attack The Opioid Crisis Upstream, Yael Cannon

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

The opioid crisis is now a nationwide epidemic, ravaging both rural and urban communities. The public health and economic consequences are staggering; recent estimates suggest the epidemic has contracted the U.S. labor market by over one million jobs and cost the nation billions of dollars. To tackle the crisis, scholars and health policy initiatives have focused primarily on downstream solutions designed to help those who are already in the throes of addiction. For example, the major initiative announced by the U.S. Surgeon General promotes the dissemination of naloxone, which helps save lives during opioid overdoses.

This Article argues that the …

Developmental Symbiosis Facilitates The Multiple Origins Of Herbivory, Scott F. Gilbert Jul 2019

Developmental Symbiosis Facilitates The Multiple Origins Of Herbivory, Scott F. Gilbert

Biology Faculty Works

Developmental bias toward particular evolutionary trajectories can be facilitated through symbiosis. Organisms are holobionts, consisting of zygote‐derived cells and a consortia of microbes, and the development, physiology, and immunity of animals are properties of complex interactions between the zygote‐derived cells and microbial symbionts. Such symbionts can be agents of developmental plasticity, allowing an organism to develop in particular directions. This plasticity can lead to genetic assimilation either through the incorporation of microbial genes into host genomes or through the direct maternal transmission of the microbes. Such plasticity can lead to niche construction, enabling the microbes to remodel host anatomy and/or …

Tree Peony Species As An Efficient Source For Α-Linolenic Acid Production, Lihang H. Xie, Qingyu Zhang, Aruna Kilaru, Yanlong Zhang

ETSU Faculty Works

The increasing need for healthy edible oil has driven us to identify α-linolenic acid (ALA)-rich species and identify key biochemical steps in ALA synthesis. Seeds of tree peony species are rich in unsaturated fatty acid content with > 40% ALA in the total fatty acid. However, fatty acid content and composition is variable among the tree peony germplasm. To this extent, a comparative study was carried out to identify the key genes responsible for differential oil accumulation among nine wild tree peony species. Subsequent to analyzing fatty acid content and composition of the seeds from nine tree peony species, a high- …

Conceptions Of Potency, Purity, And Synergy-By-Design: Toward Developing A Sowa Rigpa Medical Theory-Based Approach To Pharmaceutical Research, Tawni L. Tidwell, James H. Nettles

HIMALAYA, the Journal of the Association for Nepal and Himalayan Studies

Sowa Rigpa institutions and practitioners have growing interest in examining and legitimizing Sowa Rigpa formulas vis-à-vis pharmacological research methods, seeking scientific validation of what they view as ‘potency’ and ‘purity’ for their formulas. Likewise, the pharmacology researchers have demonstrated renewed interest in herbal medical traditions in mining for new drugs to address resistance, toxicity, and optimize what they view as ‘potency’ and ‘purity.’ However, differing conceptualizations emerge when the pharmacological drug discovery process is examined to determine what is being analyzed, how it is doing so, and what assumptions underlie such methods. Whether a formula is ‘active,’ ‘toxic’ or ‘effective’ …
