Eelgrass Pathogen Labyrinthula Zosterae Synthesizes Essential Fatty Acids, R. M. Yoshioka, Julie B. Schram, Aaron W. Galloway

Faculty, Staff, and Students

Negative consequences of parasites and disease on hosts are usually better understood than their multifaceted ecosystem effects. The pathogen Labyrinthula zosterae (Lz) causes eelgrass wasting disease but has relatives that produce large quantities of nutritionally valuable long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LCPUFA) such as docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). Here we quantify the fatty acids (FA) of Lz cultured on artificial media, eelgrass-based media, and eelgrass segments to investigate whether Lz may similarly produce LCPUFA. We also assess whether fieldcollected lesions show similar FA patterns to laboratory-inoculated eelgrass. We find that Lz produces DHA as its dominant FA along with other essential FA …

A Guide To How Your Child Learns: Understanding The Brain From Infancy To Young Adulthood, By D. P. Sortino, Jessica Platt

LWLC Faculty Research

In the first of three books in his Brain Smart series, David P. Sortino emphasizes the importance of honoring “miraculous differences in abilities and learning styles” (p. xvii). He illustrates his point with an example of a fifth grade science teacher who brought a live bat to school in order to teach a lesson on species. Introducing a live mammal instead of instructing students to group animals based on their similarities on paper, the teacher stimulated students’ limbic system (hippocampus), which resulted in a higher level of cognition for students in her class. This example captures the essence of A …

The Feasibility Of Reducing Storm Water Runoff Using Green Roofs, Rebecca Jack Jul 2019

The Feasibility Of Reducing Storm Water Runoff Using Green Roofs, Rebecca Jack

The Plymouth Student Scientist

Green roofs are where a roof of a building is partially covered with vegetation which acts as a means of providing flow control by attenuation, storage and losses due to evapotranspiration. A green roof consists of several-layered materials to achieve the desired vegetative cover and drainage characteristics. Through using InfoWorks Integrated Catchment Modelling (ICM) and the software’s integrated Sustainable Urban Drainage (SUD) control editor, simulations were run using Time Series Rainfall (TSR) rainfall over a long continuous period of 10 years. The effects green roofs have on reducing the runoff from roofs and the attenuation of the flow to the …

Psychology Faculty Articles and Research

Optimism is associated with better health outcomes with hypothesized effects due in part to optimism's association with restorative health processes. Limited work has examined whether optimism is associated with better quality sleep, a major restorative process. We test the hypothesis that greater optimism is associated with more favorable sleep quality and duration. Main analyses included adults aged 32-51 who participated in the Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults (CARDIA) study (n = 3,548) during the fifth (Year 15: 2000-2001) and sixth (Year 20: 2005-2006) follow-up visits. Optimism was assessed using the revised Life-Orientation Test. Self-report measures of …

Three Essays On Food Policy, Retailer Strategic Behavior, And Consumer Welfare, Giulia Tiboldo

Doctoral Dissertations

The impact of food policy and retailer strategic behavior on consumer welfare has been widely explored by researchers desiring to help policy makers to address the issues of unhealthy diets and excessive market power within the supply chain. This work contributes to the existing body of literature on food policy and social welfare by analyzing the impacts of three different policies that affect food purchases. In the first chapter, we evaluate the effects of different carbon taxes on food acquisitions to reduce greenhouse-gas emissions from the food system in the U.S. Our results show that these policies may significantly reduce …

Latinos are the largest and fastest-growing minority group in the U.S., and Latina women represent the largest portion of minority births, having the highest birth rate in the U.S. for over 20 years. In addition, Latina women are at increased risk of entering pregnancy being overweight or having obesity and gaining excess gestational weight. Excess gestational weight gain (GWG) has short- and long-term adverse health outcomes for the woman and her child. Although culturally tailored interventions show promise toward promoting healthy GWG among Latina women, findings from current interventions have had mixed results, suggesting the need for further tailoring to …

Expression Of A Copper Transporter Adp-Ribosylation Factor-1 (Arf1) In The Blood-Cerebrospinal Fluid Barrier, Sai Dwibhashyam Jul 2019

Expression Of A Copper Transporter Adp-Ribosylation Factor-1 (Arf1) In The Blood-Cerebrospinal Fluid Barrier, Sai Dwibhashyam

Purdue Undergraduate Research Conference

ADP-ribosylation factor 1 (Arf1) is a GTP binding protein that functions as a secondary messenger in cell signaling to maintain the Golgi architecture for vesicular trafficking. Copper (Cu) is an essential element indispensable for a variety of cellular enzymatic reactions, and its homeostasis is tightly regulated by Cu-transporting ATPases (Cu-ATPases), i.e., ATP7A and ATP7B. Evidence from this lab and others has established that elevated intracellular Cu levels prompt the translocation of ATP7A from the trans-Golgi network (TGN) towards the plasma membrane to facilitate the efflux of Cu. Moreover, literature data suggest that Arf1 is involved in Cu intracellular trafficking. The …

The Effects Of Environmental Copper Exposure On Developing Zebrafish, Christina Kaucic

Purdue Undergraduate Research Conference

Copper is an essential metal that is key in many metabolic functions and is a vital cofactor in many enzymes. Copper homeostasis is dually important for optimal health. Excess copper has been associated with minor symptoms such as fatigue, weakness, and memory loss as well as with neurological disorders such as Wilson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease and some cancers in humans. Similarly, excess copper has been shown to damage visceral organs and produce abnormal behaviors in multiple fish species including the zebrafish who has a high degree of genome sequence homology when compared to humans. For this reason, the zebrafish is …

Should Plant-Based Beverages Be Called Milk?, Itandewi Janner

JCCC Honors Journal

Cow’s milk has been consumed around the world for centuries. It is an easily available source of protein and energy. Despite the nutrition advantages of consuming cow’s milk, there are different reasons why some part of the population chooses to drink plant-based beverages. Though they are advertised as healthy and wholesome, little research has been done in understanding the nutritional implications of consuming these products in short and long term. Because there is so little research about the benefits of drinking plant-based beverages they should not be labeled as milk
